Three things we learned from Texas’ loss to TCU

Tom Herman can take away a lot of things from Saturday’s game against TCU. Here are three things we learned from the Big 12 season opener:

Texas revealed its true colors against TCU on Saturday, falling to the Horned Frogs for the seventh time in nine seasons, 33-31. Tom Herman’s squad struggled in every facet of the game, falling short in what could have been a winnable matchup.

From the offensive perspective, quarterback Sam Ehlinger struggled. The senior admitted “losing bothers [him] the most.” Ehlinger has been the starting quarterback against TCU four times and has lost three of them. Not connecting with his receivers and head-scratching play-calling from Mike Yurcich led to a struggling offense.

Moving to Chris Ash’s side of the ball and the inability to stop Max Duggan ultimately lost Texas the ballgame. Not only having a solid display in the air but the sophomore quarterback led the Horned Frogs in rushing, getting into the end zone three times. With Spencer Rattler on deck, it will only get harder for the Longhorns’ defense.

A lot can be taken away from the TCU loss if Texas wants to get its hat back into the Big 12 championship race. In year four, Tom Herman should be able to identify the problems and adjust quickly.

Here are three things we learned from the TCU loss:

Texas Christian vs Texas: Fourth quarter recap

It was a wild finish in the Texas Christian Horned Frogs and Texas Longhorns game. After taking the lead in the fourth, Texas would fall.

The Texas Longhorns and Texas Christian Horned Frogs were in a pressure packed game on Saturday. The Longhorns finally got back on top in the fourth quarter after a long run for Roschon Johnson. His 40-yard run set up the go ahead score when Sam Ehlinger found Malcolm Epps in the endzone. A Keaontay Ingram run on the two-point conversion put them up by three, 29-26.

The Frogs were able to get a short field after the offense couldn’t get anything going on their next drive. Max Duggan ran it right up the middle untouched for a 26-yard touchdown. The Longhorns would drive right down the field on a catch and run from Keaontay Ingram. He tried to punch it in from the one but fumbles the ball to TCU.

The Longhorns wouldn’t get the ball back. In the wildest finish in the fourth quarter, it ends on what else a penalty. The Horned Frogs took a safety so that they wouldn’t give the ball back to Texas. The game ends with a 33-31 final. Gary Patterson beats Tom Herman for the third time in four tries. Since TCU joined the Big 12, they have beaten the Longhorns in seven of nine opportunities.

Final Stats:

Sam Ehlinger: 17/36 236 yards 4 TDs and 1 INT

Texas Christian vs Texas: Five Reasons the Longhorns Win

Texas looks to win their third-straight game to open the season. Five reasons why the Longhorns stay perfect on Saturday.

The Texas Longhorns and Texas Christian Horned Frogs are all set for the early kickoff at 11 a.m. CDT. For TCU, they are looking for their first win of the year. After postponing their lone nonconference game against SMU, The Frogs fell to Iowa State 37-34 in Fort Worth. This will be their first road trip on the young season as they travel down to Austin. It is still unclear who will take the snaps for TCU.

Matthew Downing didn’t look great in his first start after leading only one scoring drive. Max Duggan seemed to move the offense at will once he got into the game. Will they have more of the former or latter when they take the field against the Texas Longhorns defense? Texas fans are hoping for an improved defense on Saturday.

For the Longhorns, this is their second game at home and third game of the year. After escaping Lubbock with a win, the team needs a better showing against TCU. The Longhorns have some issues they need to clean up against TCU before they get ready for Oklahoma in Dallas, Texas next Saturday at the Cotton Bowl.

Texas Christian vs Texas: Three things the Longhorns need to do

In previewing the Texas Christian vs Texas Longhorns game, we highlight three things the team needs to do better this week.

Less than 24 hours away from kickoff between the Texas Christian Horned Frogs and Texas Longhorns, the home team still has plenty of questions despite a 2-0 start. Texas signal caller Sam Ehlinger said it best when he spoke with Mackenzie Salmon of USA TODAY Sports in regards to their expectation and areas of improvement.

I am really excited for the rest of the year and the development that we are capable of making. Obviously, we started the year off 2-0, but the mistakes and area of improvement is so large. We have such a great opportunity to get better every single day. – Ehlinger on expectations and improvements

The Longhorns were able to leave Lubbock with a win over Texas Tech, but it was far from a clean game. Even in wins, there are always things to clean up. There is always room for improves. Especially when you score 63 points and only win by one score. Ehlinger would even point to the fact that he needs to play better as the season moves on.

Texas Longhorn Football: Breaking down the depth chart for TCU

Texas has released its depth chart before hosting TCU. Jordan Whittington remains the only player out as Jake Smith is expected to return.

Texas has released its depth chart before hosting TCU on Saturday. Jordan Whittington remains the only player out as Jake Smith is expected to return this week.

The Quarterbacks

Sam Ehlinger Sr Casey Thompson So Hudson Card Fr Ja’Quinden Jackson Fr

For the third consecutive game, the quarterback depth chart will remain the same. Sam Ehlinger clearly leads the way with Casey Thompson remaining as the backup. Both true freshman Hudson Card and Ja’Quinden Jackson will continue to fight for reps in practice. If Ehlinger cannot play for whatever reason, Tom Herman will put Thompson in for relief.

The Running Backs

Keaontay Ingram Jr Roschon Johnson So Bijan Robinson Fr

Keaontay Ingram had an impressive day against Texas Tech, averaging 7.4 yards per carry. He will continue to get most of the running back reps with Roschon Johnson closely behind. Bijan Robinson took a scary fall on Saturday and is dealing with a strained back. The freshman should be in practice on Tuesday or Wednesday and will play on Saturday against TCU.

The Wide Receivers

X WR Brennan Eagles Sr Tarik Black Jr
H WR Jake Smith So Kai Money So <or> Brenden Schooler Sr
Z WR Joshua Moore Rs-So Al’Vonte Woodard So

One surprising change from the wide receivers comes from the X-receiver position. Tarik Black earned a start on Saturday after an impressive performance against UTEP. Then, Black only played 29 snaps compared to Brennan Eagles’ 50. This week, Eagles is listed atop the depth chart and will get the start. Even though he was listed on the depth chart last week, Jake Smith did not play. Herman said Smith is expected to play against the Horned Frogs.

Next, we look at the tight ends and offensive line.
