Texas Football: Studs and Duds in the loss to TCU

Longhorns Wire chooses the Studs and Duds from the conference matchup between Texas and TCU on Oct. 3.

Nothing went Texas’ way in the 33-31 loss to Texas Christian on Oct. 3.

It was one of the worst officiated games that many have ever witnessed, but there’s no excuses for how Texas performed on each side of the ball. It was an undisciplined mess that resulted in TCU outcoaching Texas in every phase.

As Longhorns Wire recaps each game of the season, we highlight the key players that performed well along with the those who didn’t. Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger surprisingly did not fall into either category against TCU. He was noticeably inaccurate in the air — yet still compiled four touchdowns in the contest.

Unfortunately for this game, there were more negative moments than there were positives. Let’s take a look at the three Studs and Duds from Week 4.

Studs

Joseph Ossai

Joseph Ossai was one of the lone bright spots for Texas on the defensive side of the ball. He had four quarterback pressures, one sack and one forced fumble. On top of that, he tacked on 11 total tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss.

Roschon Johnson

Running back Roschon Johnson averaged an impressive 12.6 yards per carry. He only had one reception on the receiving side, but it resulted in a 7 yard touchdown for the Longhorns.

Jared Wiley

Tight end Jared Wiley led the team with 63 receiving yards from just two receptions. However, they were at critical moments in the game. Texas must find a way to utilize his size and athleticism more.

Duds

Tom Herman

This loss falls on him. To put it plain and simple, Tom Herman was severely outcoached in every phase. Texas had 12 penalties resulting in 92 yards against TCU, including many mental mistakes from his players. The play calling was questionable at times and Texas just simply looked unprepared. Herman must find a way to adapt in order to win these favorable matchups.

Keaontay Ingram

On the ground, running back Keaontay Ingram produced just 40 yards on 11 carries. He averaged 3.6 yards per carry. Ingram did provide a few big gains on the receiving end, but his crucial fumble on the goal line completely ruined Texas’ chances of defeating TCU.

DeMarvion Overshown

The entire linebacker core struggled throughout this game and tackling continues to be an issue for Chris Ash’s defense. On TCU’s game winning touchdown, quarterback Max Duggan easily ran right up the middle. According to PFF, Overshown led the team with five missed tackles.
