Coach Prime on recent absence of linebacker Juwan Mitchell: ‘Ask him what happened’

Coach Prime on the recent absence of linebacker Juwan Mitchell: “Ask him what happened”

Linebacker Juwan Mitchell, who was leading the Buffaloes in total tackles heading into their Oct. 7 game at Arizona State, hasn’t seen the field since for an unspecified reason.

After Colorado’s loss to Stanford on Friday, head coach Deion Sanders confirmed Mitchell was still with the team. But when asked if Mitchell was injured, Coach Prime replied, “Ask him what happened.”

Sanders’ response suggests Mitchell’s absence may be a disciplinary issue. In early August, Mitchell was dismissed from Arizona State’s program following an incident at practice. He joined the Buffs about two weeks later and made his debut on Sept. 9 against Nebraska.

Last Wednesday, Colorado linebackers coach Andre’ Hart said it was a coach’s decision for Brendan Gant to play over Mitchell at ASU.

Mitchell’s college career has also included stops at Butler Community College, Texas and Tennessee.

Former Longhorn, Volunteer and Sun Devil Juwan Mitchell seemingly joins CU Buffs

Colorado has seemingly added another big piece to its linebacking corps

As shown by Well Off Media, the Colorado Buffaloes have a new face in their linebacker room. During practice on Friday, Juwan Mitchell was in uniform rocking a “temporary,” as he put it, No. 90.

CU will be Mitchell’s fourth stop in his college career. After starting things off at Butler Community College, he played at Texas for two seasons and led the Longhorns in tackles in 2020. Mitchell then spent two seasons at Tennessee where he would earn starts for the Volunteers. Mitchell had his 2021 season derailed by injury but came back to help a 2022 Tennessee squad that flirted with the College Football playoff.

The 6-foot-1, 235-pound senior was set to play at Arizona State this season but was dismissed from the Sun Devils earlier this month. CU now has the services of a linebacker who has played in 33 career games with 21 starts.

Former Rutgers football commit Juwan Mitchell is in the transfer portal

Juwan Mitchell is back in the transfer portal.

Juwan Mitchell, a former verbal to the Rutgers football, is no longer a part of the Arizona State football team.

Formerly committed to Rutgers as part of the 2019 recruiting class, the New Jersey linebacker ended up de-committing and joining Texas. He was a three-star recruit and the No. 44 player in New Jersey per the 247Sports Composite.

Mitchell was solid at Texas, accruing 101 total tackles in his two seasons with the program. Then he transferred to Tennessee (48 total tackles and an interception last year), before entering the transfer portal and joining Arizona State this offseason.

According to a report from 247Sports, Mitchell was released from the program over the weekend. On Tuesday, Dillingham was asked about the status of Mitchell.

“Juwan Mitchell is no longer with the team,” Dillingham said.

Dillingham was then asked about the moves to let go of certain players and how that fits into the culture he is trying to establish.

“Culture wins, it is very, very simple. Culture wins,” Dillingham said.

“You’re going to either practice how we practice, love how we live. Be a good person. Compete. Say ‘yes sir,’ say ‘no sir.’ Open doors for people. Be genuinely a good person and do things right or you’re not.”

Juwan Mitchell ‘a model of consistency’ during three fall camp practices

Linebacker Juwan Mitchell ‘a model of consistency’ during three practices in fall camp.

Tennessee practiced for the third time during fall training camp Wednesday.

Following Wednesday’s practice, linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary met with media. Jean-Mary discussed redshirt senior linebacker Juwan Mitchell.

“The first three days have been really good,” Jean-Mary said of Mitchell. “Juwan has been a model of consistency these first three days. It’s really the first time probably in almost a year and a half to two years that he’s felt healthy. He’s gotten all of the surgeries behind him and he’s probably as healthy as he’s been in a long time. You’re starting to see the best parts of him. He’s been really good these first three days.”

Jean-Mary was asked what having Mitchell healthy will do for Tennessee this season.

“Like every team in the country, everybody is trying to build depth,” he said. “If he’s able to come in and be able to contribute at a high level, we’ll feel like that just adds to our numbers. With the way we play and score, we have to have several linebackers ready to play. Especially with the wear and tear that you get in this conference, the more quality linebackers that you have, the better chance you have of being better on defense.”

Tim Banks discusses linebacker Juwan Mitchell during fall camp

Tennessee defensive coordinator Tim Banks discusses linebacker Juwan Mitchell during fall training camp.

Tennessee kicked off fall training camp Monday at Haslam Field.

Ahead of the Vols’ first fall training camp practice, second-year defensive coordinator Tim Banks discussed expectations for redshirt senior linebacker Juwan Mitchell ahead of the season.

“Juwan was a guy who had some really significant reps for us last fall before he got injured,” Banks said. “He started to work his way back a little bit in the spring. The health issue is obviously the first thing, we’ve got to make sure he is feeling healthy, which I think we’ve turned the corner there. Then, we’ve got to see what he does as he competes for the job.

“You’ve got Jeremy Banks and Aaron Beasley coming back, we brought in Elijah Herring and you feel really good about Solon Page III, Pakk (Kwauze Garland) – we feel like we have pretty good depth that we are starting to build at that position. We felt really good about Juwan Mitchell, so it’s really up to him as we continue to see what kind of development he has made over the summer and see if that leads to him being able to contribute again, which we would hope it does.”

How Texas football transfers are performing with their new programs

How are the former Longhorns performing this season?

Ever since the new transfer rules were enacted, players have been moving all over the nation in order to receive new opportunities.

While transfers have certainly helped Texas in the past like running back Tre Watson, or even this year’s defensive transfer Ovie Oghoufo, the Longhorns have also lost their fair share of transfers throughout the past couple years.

In many cases, players transfer to get a bigger role than what they currently have, but there is always other reasons beneath the surface that we will not know. Some teams may be upset that a player leaves, although they are likely doing what they think is best for their career.

Since we are at the halfway mark of the 2021 college football season, it felt like a great time to check in on how the former Longhorns are doing at their new homes.

Here is how the former Longhorns are currently performing after choosing to leave the University of Texas.
