Five reasons to be optimistic about Texas football in 2022

2022 provides new hope that Texas can get the program heading back in the right direction.

A 5-7 record will never go over well at the University of Texas. The poor performance in 2021 led to massive program changes this offseason.

Texas landed the No. 5 recruiting class in the nation for the 2022 cycle. The class put an emphasis on adding talent to the offensive line and the defensive front. Expect to see at least a few members of the 2022 class earn early playing time next season.

The transfer portal was a tool Steve Sarkisian used to bring in and upgrade the roster, specifically on offense. Quinn Ewers headlines the group along with high-upside pass catchers Isaiah Neyor, Agiye Hall and tight end Jahleel Billingsley.

Texas hired a few exciting new coaches to the staff. Wide receivers coach Brennan Marion and running backs coach Tashard Choice have gotten off to a strong start in Austin. Former TCU coach Gary Patterson is one of the top defensive minds in the sport and will contribute in an analyst role.

The upcoming season provides new hope that Texas can get the program heading back in the right direction. Here are five reasons to be optimistic about the 2022 season.

Top five reasons why Texas Longhorns fired Tom Herman

During his four years, Tom Herman was 32-18, never losing less than three games. Here are five reasons Herman was let go as the UT coach:

Texas and Chris Del Conte finally decided it was time to let go of Tom Herman. Rumblings of him being fired began when the Longhorns lost back to back games against TCU and Oklahoma in October. The late-season loss to Iowa State was the icing on the cake.

After the Alamo Bowl against Colorado, you could tell Herman was emotional about his players and his time in Austin. It turned out to be his final game in burnt orange.

During his four years, Herman was 32-18, never losing less than three games in a season. He had the opportunity to fire assistant coaches and hire offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich and defensive coordinator Chris Ash. Even those two were not able to fully elevate Texas to the next level.

Texas Christian vs Texas: Five Reasons the Longhorns Win

Texas looks to win their third-straight game to open the season. Five reasons why the Longhorns stay perfect on Saturday.

The Texas Longhorns and Texas Christian Horned Frogs are all set for the early kickoff at 11 a.m. CDT. For TCU, they are looking for their first win of the year. After postponing their lone nonconference game against SMU, The Frogs fell to Iowa State 37-34 in Fort Worth. This will be their first road trip on the young season as they travel down to Austin. It is still unclear who will take the snaps for TCU.

Matthew Downing didn’t look great in his first start after leading only one scoring drive. Max Duggan seemed to move the offense at will once he got into the game. Will they have more of the former or latter when they take the field against the Texas Longhorns defense? Texas fans are hoping for an improved defense on Saturday.

For the Longhorns, this is their second game at home and third game of the year. After escaping Lubbock with a win, the team needs a better showing against TCU. The Longhorns have some issues they need to clean up against TCU before they get ready for Oklahoma in Dallas, Texas next Saturday at the Cotton Bowl.
