Giants injury report: 12 players among the walking wounded

The New York Giants listed 12 players on their projected injury report on Wednesday, including RB Saquon Barkley and DB Logan Ryan.

The New York Giants returned to practice on Wednesday but as opposed to their usual two-hour fully-padded session, they instead held a roughly 55-minute walkthrough.

The results were not positive.

Running back Saquon Barkey (knee) and wide receivers Sterling Shepard (hamstring) and Darius Slayton (hamstring) did not participate.

Meanwhile, long snapper Casey Kreiter was limited with a knee injury that might be of concern. The Giants worked out three long snappers on Tuesday which could indicate some pessimism regarding Kreiter’s Week 4 availability.

In total, 12 players were listed.

The Giants’ full Wednesday injury report can be found below (projection due to walkthrough):

Did not participate: OL Ben Bredeson (hand), LB Blake Martinez (knee), WR Sterling Shepard (hamstring), WR Darius Slayton (hamstring)

Limited participant: RB Saquon Barkley (knee), DB Keion Crossen (elbow), DB Nate Ebner (quad), FB Cullen Gillaspia (ankle), WR Kenny Golladay (hip), LS Casey Kreiter (knee), DB Logan Ryan (hamstring), TE Kaden Smith (knee)

Giants’ Cam Brown out, Kenny Golladay questionable vs. Falcons

The New York Giants have ruled Cam Brown out and listed three others, including Kenny Golladay, as questionable vs. the Atlanta Falcons.

The New York Giants took the field for their final practice of Week 3 on Friday and there was good news to be had all around.

Tight end Evan Engram (calf), wide receivers Kenny Golladay (hip) and Kadarius Toney (ankle), safety Logan Ryan (hamstring) and running back Saquon Barkley (knee) all participated in the portion of practice open to the media.

Unsurprisingly, most are expected to play on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons despite their designations. Golladay will be a game-time decision.

Meanwhile, linebacker Cam Brown (hamstring) did not participate. He has been ruled out.

The Giants’ final injury report can be found (in full) below:

Out: LB Cam Brown (hamstring)

Sunday’s Week 3 game kicks off at 1:00 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Giants injury report: Kadarius Toney added with ankle issue

New York Giants WR Kenny Golladay and TE Evan Engram (calf) were again limited on Thursday, joined by WR Kadarius Toney (ankle).

The New York Giants were back on the field Thursday, preparing for a Week 3 battle against the Atlanta Falcons at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

One day after exceeding expectations set by head coach Joe Judge and participating in practice on a limited basis, tight end Evan Engram (calf) was back at it.

If Engram participates again on Friday, he stands a solid chance of making his season debut on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the news was not as good for wide receiver Kenny Golladay (hip) or running back Saquon Barkley (knee). But especially Golladay.

Both Golladay and Barkley were still listed as limited. They were joined by rookie wide receiver Kadarius Toney (ankle).

The Giants’ full Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: LB Cam Brown (hamstring)

Limited participant: RB Saquon Barkley (knee), DB Nate Ebner (quad), TE Evan Engram (calf), WR Kenny Golladay (hip), DL Austin Johnson (illness), DB Logan Ryan (hamstring), TE Kaden Smith (knee), WR Kadarius Toney (ankle), DL Austin Johnson (illness)

Giants injury report: Evan Engram, Kenny Golladay limited

Five New York Giants, including TE Evan Engram and WR Kenny Golladay, were limited on Wednesday. Three others did not practice.

The New York Giants returned to practice ahead of a Week 3 game against the Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday, and all eyes were on tight end Evan Engram (calf).

Although head coach Joe Judge indicated Engram would only work with trainers on the side, the tight end participated during the portion of practice open to the media. And he looked good.

The Giants opted not to place Engram on injured reserve back in August, believing that he would beat the minimum three-week timetable and return as early as this Sunday. That projection still appears to be on track.

Meanwhile, defensive lineman Austin Johnson was not spotted at practice, while linebacker Cam Brown (hamstring) continued his work on the side.

The Giants’ full Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: DL Austin Johnson (illness), LB Cam Brown (hamstring), S Nate Ebner (quad)

Limited participant: TE Evan Engram (calf), RB Saquon Barkley (knee), WR Kenny Golladay (hip), DB Logan Ryan (hamstring) and TE Kaden Smith (knee)

The New York Giants fell in heartbreaking fashion to the Washington Football Team on Thursday night, dropping their record to 0-2 on the season.

As the losing continues, frustration across the organization is beginning to grow. Players are griping with each other and the coaches, fans are calling for heads and somewhere, John Mara is probably throwing chairs.

But there were a few bright spots in Week 2. Namely quarterback Daniel Jones, who earned a team-high grade of 91.3 on Thursday night courtesy of Pro Football Focus.

Just behind Jones on the offensive side of the ball were tight end Kaden Smith (87.9), fullback Eli Penny (70.9) and wide receiver Sterling Shepard (68.6).

Other notable grades on offense include running back Saquon Barkley (63.3), wide receiver Darius Slayton (61.0) and right tackle Nate Solder (49.7).

The lowest-graded player on offense was center Billy Price, who checked out at 28.1, including a pass protection grade of 8.7 (no, that’s not a typo).

On the defensive side of the ball, cornerback Adoree’ Jackson led the way with an 84.3. He was followed by safety Xavier McKinney (75.5), cornerback James Bradberry (74.3) and safety Jabrill Peppers (69.8).

Other noteworthy defensive grades include linebacker Azeez Ojulari (51.6), safety Logan Ryan (51.0) and defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence (45.0).

The lowest-graded Giants defender was defensive end Raymond Johnson (29.7).

Giants’ Saquon Barkley questionable, Evan Engram out vs. Broncos

New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley is questionable but likely to play against the Denver Broncos, while TE Evan Engram is out.

The New York Giants will finally, officially see the return of running back Saquon Barkley (knee) on Sunday against the Denver Broncos.

Nearly a year to the day (Sept. 20, 2020) after suffering a torn ACL versus the Chicago Bears, Barkley will step back onto the field in a live, competitive environment. And a pitch count? That might be off the table, too.

Despite being listed as questionable, expect Saquon to be a full-go after getting through practice without a setback.

Meanwhile, tight end Evan Engram (calf) continued his work on the side, but was still ruled out against the Broncos.

The remainder of the Giants’ injury report, including the status of cornerback Adoree’ Jackson and tight end Kyle Rudolph, can be found below:

Out: TE Evan Engram (calf)

Doubtful: N/A

Questionable: RB Saquon Barkley (knee), CB Adoree’ Jackson (ankle)

No designation: WR Kenny Golladay (hamstring), LB Justin Hilliard (foot), DB Josh Jackson (calf), TE Kyle Rudolph (foot), DT Danny Shelton (neck), TE Kaden Smith (knee), OT Andrew Thomas (ankle), WR Kadarius Toney (hamstring).

Giants injury report: Evan Engram sits again, positive news for others

Several New York Giants trended in the right direction on Thursday, but TE Evan Engram (calf) seems unlikely to play in Week 1.

The New York Giants returned to the field on Thursday afternoon in preparation for a Week 1 game against the Denver Broncos and several injured players continued to trend in the right direction.

Prior to practice, offensive coordinator Jason Garrett announced the news everyone was waiting to hear: running back Saquon Barkley is finally 100 percent.

“[I have] a lot of confidence in him as a player. I think he’s done a great job to get himself back healthy and 100 percent,” Garrett told reporters.

There was also optimism surrounding rookie wide receiver Kadarius Toney (hamstring), who may take on a “significant role” this Sunday.

“Kadarius is earning everyone’s trust. He’s getting out here and he’s working,” special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey said.

News was not nearly as positive for tight end Evan Engram (calf), who was again limited to work with trainers on the side. He is likely out against Denver.

The Giants’ full Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: TE Evan Engram (calf)

Limited participant: RB Saquon Barkley (knee), WR Kenny Golladay (hamstring), LB Justin Hilliard (foot), CB Adoree’ Jackson (ankle), DB Josh Jackson (calf), TE Kyle Rudolph (foot), DT Danny Shelton (neck), TE Kaden Smith (knee), OT Andrew Thomas (ankle) and WR Kadarius Toney (hamstring).

Giants injury report: Saquon Barkley limited, Evan Engram DNP

New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley (knee) was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday, but TE Evan Engram (calf) sat out.

The New York Giants took the field for their first (full) regular-season practice of 2021 on Wednesday and all eyes were on running back Saquon Barkley (knee).

As anticipated, Barkley was geared up and took the field with his teammates. He participated during the portion of practice open to the media, as did wide receivers Kenny Golladay (hamstring) and Kadarius Toney (hamstring).

“Yeah I’m good. Just working every day to get better,” Toney told reporters when asked if he’s healthy and ready. “I’m here to do my job. Whatever they say.”

Head coach Joe Judge said Toney would likely play a “significant role” on Sunday against the Denver Broncos, but he specified production over volume.

Meanwhile, tight end Evan Engram (calf) did not participate in practice and his status for Week 1 remains very much in doubt.

The Giants’ full Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: TE Evan Engram (calf)

Limited participant: RB Saquon Barkley (knee), WR Kenny Golladay (hamstring), LB Justin Hilliard (foot), CB Adoree’ Jackson (ankle), DB Josh Jackson (calf), TE Kyle Rudolph (foot), DT Danny Shelton (neck), TE Kaden Smith (knee), OT Andrew Thomas (ankle) and WR Kadarius Toney (hamstring).

Giants dropped by Patriots, 22-20: Instant analysis

Instant analysis of the New York Giants’ 22-20 Week 3 preseason loss to the New England Patriots at MetLife Stadium.

The New York Giants hosted the New England Patriots in their third and final  preseason game Sunday night at MetLife Stadium.

In what was supposed to be the ‘dress rehearsal’ for the regular season, meaning many of the starters would be taking the field for the at least the first  half, the Giants could not fulfill that want.

[listicle id=673642]

The offensive line was missing two potential starters in right tackle Matt Peart (did not start) and left guard Shane Lemieux (injured), replaced by veterans Nate Solder and Ted Larsen respectively.

Also missing from the starting lineup were running back Saquon Barkley, wide receiver Kenny Golladay and tight end Kyle Rudolph. In their place, the Giants started Devontae Booker at running back, Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton at wide receiver and Evan Engram at tight end.

The Giants went three-and-out in their first possession with quarterback Daniel Jones getting sacked by linebacker Josh Uche, who beat left tackle Andrew Thomas.

On defense, rookie Rodarius Williams started in place of the injured Adoree’ Jackson (ankle) and Darnay Holmes started at slot corner. The defense held on third down in their own territory on the Pats’ first drive, holding them to a 41-yard field goal.

Inside linebacker Blake Martinez stripped Pats’ wideout Jacoby Meyers for an interception on the ensuing series. Jones then drove the Giants 45 yards on eight plays down to the New England one. He then threw the ball behind Engram in the end zone which was picked off by D’Angelo Ross.

After another field goal from the Patriots and a trade of punts, Jones led the Giants on a nine-play, 58-yard drive culminating in a pretty 23-yard touchdown strike to tight end Kaden Smith right before the half to give Big Blue a 7-6 lead at the half.

The second half gave way to mostly backups and New England rookie quarterback Mac Jones led the Patriots on two touchdown drives to give the Pats a 19-7 lead. The Giants struck back early in the fourth quarter to narrow the score to 19-14 when quarterback Mike Glennon hit wideout Alex Bachman on a slant for 12-yard touchdown.

After Pats backup kicker Quinn Norden missed a 54-yard field goal, Glennon hit wide receiver Damion Willis on a 43-yard Hail Mary touchdown cutover threw Dante Pettis on the two-point conversion.

The final was Patriots 22, Giants 20.

Notes

  • Engram left the game with a calf injury and didn’t return. Slayton went out with a foot/ankle issue. C.J. Board had his elbow checked out by trainers but returned. Backup offensive lineman Ted Larsen walked off the field late in the game with a knee injury.
  • Jones played the entire first half, completing 17 of 22 passes for 135 yards with one touchdown and one interception for a QB rating of 88.3. He looked unsettled at times but to his credit, he was under pressure more often than not.
  • Thomas had a rough night, giving up multiple pressures and a sack and was also flagged for a hold. Peart was equally inept, getting beat by the Pats’ edge rushers seemly at will.
  • Shepard continued to look sharp, caching five of six targets for 42 yards.
  • Graham Gano uncharacteristically missed a 41-yard field goal in the third quarter.
  • Dexter Lawrence. Lorenzo Carter, Trent Harris and Willy Henry were all credited with at least a half a sack.
  • The Giants finished the preseason with an 0-3 record.
  • The Giants will be making 27 roster decisions by 4:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, which is the NFL deadline for teams to get their rosters down to 53 players.

Brett Heggie, Quincy Wilson were highest-graded Giants vs. Browns

New York Giants OL Brett Heggie and DB Quincy Wilson earned the team’s highest Pro Football Focus grades in Week 2 of the preseason.

The New York Giants rested the majority of their starters on Sunday afternoon against the Cleveland Browns, giving way to reserves and back-end of the depth guys.

The result was a mixed bag — as it usually is — but there were more positives than negatives this week. Several players showed up in big ways and displayed impressively unique versatility.

[listicle id=673233]

Pro Football Focus didn’t necessarily see it that way, however.

PFF gave wide receiver Matt Cole, who got thrust into action at cornerback, a grade of just 54.9 on offense and 47.5 on defense despite not allowing a reception (two targets) and making one stop to force a field goal.

Cole did fare better on special teams, earning the team’s second-highest unit grade at 76.2. Unsurprisingly, linebacker Cam Brown topped that list (82.3).

Offensively, backup center Brett Heggie led the way with a grade of 82.8. He was followed by running back Devontae Booker (77.1) and fullback Eli Penny (75.6).

Other noteworthy offensive grades include offensive lineman Jonotthan Harrison (70.7), wide receiver David Sills (68.6) and tight end Kaden Smith (67.2).

On the defensive side of the ball, safety Quincy Wilson led the way with a grade of 81.7. Just behind him were linebacker Oshane Ximines (80.2) and safety Julian Love (73.1).

Rookie cornerback Rodarius Williams also took a step in the right direction with a 64.4.

The lowest-graded players on the Giants were defensive lineman Willie Henry (27.1), linebacker Trent Harris (35.3) and linebacker Cam Brown (37.3). Wide receiver Alex Bachman earned the team’s lowest offensive grade at 43.8.
