Former Georgia wide receiver enters transfer portal again

Former UGA football receiver enters the transfer portal again after spending the past two seasons at Mississippi State

Former Georgia Bulldogs receiver Justin Robinson has reportedly entered the NCAA transfer portal again after spending the past two seasons at Mississippi State.

In 2023, Robinson recorded 21 receptions for 257 receiving yards at Mississippi State. These numbers aren’t extremely impressive, but he actually was Mississippi State’s third-leading receiver. The Bulldogs had a dreadful passing offense last season and finished second-to-last in the SEC with an average of 181.8 passing yards per game.

Mississippi State used to throw the ball more than any other team in the country under head coach Mike Leach, but that changed in 2023. The Bulldogs really struggled offensively a year ago. Robinson has one season of eligibility remaining.

One potential destination for Robinson is the Washington Huskies. He could be reunited with former Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers. Washington lost all of its leading receivers to the NFL draft.

Robinson, who transferred from Georgia following last season’s national championship, earned more snaps at Mississippi State. Robinson finished the 2022 college football season with a career high in receptions, yardage and touchdowns. In 2022, Robinson recorded 30 receptions, 326 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

During the 2022 postseason, Robinson notably earned the MVP award of the ReliaQuest Bowl after a strong performance.  The 6-foot-4, 220-pound wide receiver is a former four-star recruit out of Eagles Landing Christian in McDonough, Georgia.

Mississippi State throws the ball more than any other team in the country. Next year, Robinson is expected to have a larger role for the Bulldogs after star receiver Rara Thomas transferred to Georgia earlier this offseason.

Robinson, during his final year at the University of Georgia, finished the 2021 season with two catches for 18 yards and a touchdown. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound wide receiver is a former four-star recruit out of Eagles Landing Christian in McDonough, Georgia.

Robinson, who wears No. 18 for Mississippi State, was a notable piece of Georgia’s top-ranked class of 2020. Kirby Smart and Georgia football signed five receivers in the class of 2020. Jermaine Burton and Justin Robinson transferred after the national championship. Ladd McConkey, Arian Smith and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint remain with the Georgia football program.

Dawgs to face former Georgia WR against Mississippi State

The Georgia Bulldogs will face former UGA receiver Justin Robinson when they travel to play Mississippi State.

The Georgia Bulldogs will face former Georgia receiver Justin Robinson on Nov. 12. Robinson, a sophomore, is playing more at Mississippi State after transferring to Mike Leach and company following the national championship.

Mississippi State throws the ball more than any other team in the country. The Mississippi State Bulldogs have 448 passing attempts this season. To put that into perspective, Mississippi State already has more passing attempts through nine games this season than Georgia had in 15 games (407 passing attempts) during the 2021 college football season.

Robinson has played a larger role for the Bulldogs in recent weeks. The sophomore receiver has 15 catches for 154 yards and a touchdown this season.

Robinson is one of six Georgia class of 2020 signees to transfer from UGA. Georgia’s top 10 signees from the class of 2020 are still with the program. That’s impressive retention in the current transfer portal era.

Mississippi State coach Mike Leach demands a lot from his receivers. Mississippi State throws the ball a great deal, and he expects his receivers to be on the same page as the quarterback.

Tracking Georgia Bulldogs in the 2022 NCAA transfer portal

The Georgia Bulldogs football program has already seen five players leave the school for other programs within the SEC this offseason.

The Georgia Bulldogs football program has already seen five players leave the school for other programs within the SEC this offseason. Georgia won the 2021 national championship, but that does not mean that every player is satisfied with their role.

Georgia has lost a lot of talent to the transfer portal at defensive back and wide receiver. The Bulldogs lost defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae to Miami and wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton to LSU, which contributes to the high amount of transfers at those two position groups.

To date, Georgia has lost seven players to other programs and one player (quarterback JT Daniels) remains in the transfer portal.

Explaining the NBA’s hardship exception and the free agents who signed as replacement players

Explaining what hardship exceptions and replacement players mean as COVID-19 protocols hit the NBA.

As the omicron variant of COVID-19 continues to spread, the NBA has required a large share of “replacement players” to fill in for the players who are in health and safety protocols. And so far, more than 100 players have reportedly entered the league’s health and safety protocols so far this month, per ESPN’s Baxter Holmes.

But how exactly do the “replacement players” work?

Essentially, the NBA’s hardship exception allows teams to exceed the 15-man roster limit if more than three players on the roster are each going to miss extended time due to illness or injury. Typically, teams weren’t allowed to apply for the hardship exception before Jan. 5.

But starting last season, the league changed the policy to allow earlier exceptions. And as of earlier this week, effective Dec. 19 until Jan. 19, the NBA is allowing teams to sign one replacement player for each player on their roster who tests positive for COVID-19.

While there are some big names (e.g. Isaiah Thomas, Lance Stephenson, CJ Miles) who have signed as replacement players, there are lots of promising young NBA hopefuls who are hoping to use this opportunity as a chance to stick around the league.

Not all of the players below were signed through hardship exceptions and some transactions (e.g. DeMarcus Cousins and Wesley Matthews to the Milwaukee Bucks) may have happened anyway during a normal season.

But below, based on the NBA’s transaction log and reporting from the league’s top insiders, you can find a live tracker of all the players who have signed new deals with NBA teams over the course of the past month.

Thunder sign guard Justin Robinson to second 10-day contract

Justin Robinson signed a second 10-day contract with the OKC Thunder after getting six games in the first round of the deal.

The Oklahoma City Thunder signed guard Justin Robinson to a second 10-day contract, the team announced on Thursday.

Over the span of the first contract Robinson had with OKC, the guard averaged 3.5 points, 1.3 assists and 1.0 rebound in 12.1 minutes over six appearances.

Those stats are slightly lower due to the game against the Philadelphia 76ers (about 5 1/2 minutes of play time) and Utah Jazz (about 2 minutes of play time). Removing those from the equation, Robinson averaged 5.0 points, 2.0 assists and 1.5 rebounds in about 16 minutes per game.

Robinson, 23, is in his second year in the pros. He appeared in nine games for the Washington Wizards last season, where he averaged 1.4 points and 0.8 assists in 5.4 minutes per game.

He was a standout in the G League bubble this season, where he averaged 15.5 points, 5.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game while shooting 40.5% from 3. The 6-foot-1 guard helped the Delaware Blue Coats get to the championship game, where they lost to the Lakeland Magic.

Robinson will have five games with the Thunder under this new 10-day deal. Oklahoma City has 17 games left this season.

The next is scheduled to be against the Detroit Pistons on Friday night beginning at 6 p.m.

3 things to know about new Thunder guard Justin Robinson

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Justin Robinson signed a 10-day contract with OKC. Here is some background on the former Virginia Tech Hokie.

The Oklahoma City Thunder signed guard Justin Robinson to a 10-day contract on Monday and threw him into action immediately. The 6-foot-1 guard played 24 minutes against the Detroit Pistons and scored nine points.

That is already a career-high. After playing for Virginia Tech for four years, he was not drafted to the NBA but later signed a contract with the Washington Wizards. He has spent the majority of the last two seasons in the G League.

In Oklahoma City, Robinson will work to prove he deserves a spot in the league.

Here are some pieces of background about the new Thunder guard.

Thunder suffer another big loss in Mykhailiuk’s return to Detroit

Svi Mykhailiuk faced his former team, while Jaylen Hoard and Justin Robinson debuted for the OKC Thunder against the Detroit Pistons.

If one time is chance, two times is coincidence and three times is a pattern, the Oklahoma City Thunder have reached that final phase: With a 132-108 loss to the Detroit Pistons, they have suffered three bad losses in a row.

Without any active players from the preferred starting lineup, this is starting to become a trend.

The Thunder lost to the Phoenix Suns by 37 points on Friday. The next night, they fell by 48 to the Portland Trail Blazers, two shy of the organization’s worst deficit in team history. They couldn’t recover Monday despite playing against one of the worst teams in the league.

Svi Mykhailiuk faced the Pistons for the first time since they traded him to the Thunder. He had 17 points and a career-best four steals, showcasing some of the skill that Detroit had wanted to see more of from him before trading him, but he couldn’t get revenge.

The Thunder are now 10 games below .500 for the first time this season.

Oklahoma City cut it close in the middle two quarters, but they couldn’t sustain any runs. After falling behind by 24 in the second quarter, they cut the deficit to seven before slipping just prior to halftime. Detroit extended its lead back up to 15 early in the third, but OKC cut it down to nine.

None of it was sustainable. The Pistons shot 52.1% from the field and 46.4% from 3 while Oklahoma City made only 41.2% of its looks and shot a mere 18.5% from behind the arc.

“We didn’t play really good defense,” Mykhailiuk said. “We scored enough, we scored 100 points, I feel like that’s enough to win a game, but on defense we let them score 130.”

That’s the third game in a row the Thunder have given up more than 130 points, and the third game in a row they lost by a huge margin.
