Ohio State defensive back Jaylen Johnson enters transfer portal

The transfer portal is open and Ohio State has lost a former three-star prospect.

The transfer portal recently opened for players who may need a fresh start or just looking for greener pastures. Some have ascertained that upwards of 300 players have already entered the portal looking for a new team.

Ohio State now has its first confirmed portal entry in former 2021 three-star safety, Jaylen Johnson. Johnson is a red-shirt freshman with three years of eligibility remaining for his new team. Coming to the Buckeyes out of Cincinnati La Salle, Johnson was the No. 20 safety prospect in the country and the No. 12 player in the state of Ohio.

Unfortunately, Johnson had to deal with an ACL tear before his freshman season leading to the red-shirt year. Johnson came back healthy this year but did not see any playing time with the Buckeyes.

Johnson was buried behind a plethora of talent at safety in the OSU secondary. Even though you hate to see something of this nature this close to playing in the College Football Playoff, this seems to be a case of a young man just looking for an opportunity to play. With so many names already in the portal, time is of the essence. Good luck in finding the right fit.

Ohio State now prepares to take on No. 1 Georgia in the CFP semi-final on December 31 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Resetting Michigan State football’s RB recruiting board

Check out what Michigan State’s running back board might look like as the early signing period approaches:

Michigan State lost a huge commitment in the form of Kedrick Reescano yesterday. The longtime 4-star commit was a focal point of the class, and now the Spartan coaching staff will be forced to replace him.

There are still a lot of viable options for the Spartans to consider and running backs coach Effrem Reed will look to secure some of those options before the December early signing period.

Michigan State will look to take two running backs in this class, so expect a lot of heat to be turned up on this list:

Tracking Georgia Bulldogs in the 2022 NCAA transfer portal

The Georgia Bulldogs football program has already seen five players leave the school for other programs within the SEC this offseason.

The Georgia Bulldogs football program has already seen five players leave the school for other programs within the SEC this offseason. Georgia won the 2021 national championship, but that does not mean that every player is satisfied with their role.

Georgia has lost a lot of talent to the transfer portal at defensive back and wide receiver. The Bulldogs lost defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae to Miami and wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton to LSU, which contributes to the high amount of transfers at those two position groups.

To date, Georgia has lost seven players to other programs and one player (quarterback JT Daniels) remains in the transfer portal.

Georgia football WR Jaylen Johnson enters transfer portal

Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Jaylen Johnson, a former walk-on, has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Jaylen Johnson has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Johnson fought and clawed his way to playing time after walking-on to the football team. Johnson was an unheralded recruit coming out of Peachtree High School.

Kirby Smart and Georgia put Johnson on scholarship after the 2020 college football season. Johnson will have two years of eligibility at his new home.

Jaylen Johnson is likely seeking more playing time. The junior wide receiver finished the 2021 season with four touches for 35 yards. Johnson had Georgia’s longest play (21 yards) against Clemson and forced a fumble against Vanderbilt. Johnson’s playing time on offense decreased as the season went on.

Johnson played in all 10 games in 2020 as a reserve receiver and special teams player. He recorded no statistics.

The 6-foot-2, 192-pound receiver walked on as a freshman and was a fixture on the scout team in 2018. In 2019, Johnson played in three games and ended the year with two catches for 20 yards.

Jaylen Johnson previously wore No. 81 before changing to No. 23. Johnson joins defensive back Ameer Speed in the transfer portal.

Kirby Smart, UGA award scholarships to pair of walk-ons

Kirby Smart, UGA football awarded scholarships to pair of walk-ons this offseason

The Georgia Bulldogs have awarded scholarships to a key pair of walk-ons this offseason. It is refreshing to see Kirby Smart and Georgia reward one of their own in a day and age where there are so many potential transfers and coaches are signing as many recruits as possible.

Georgia football coach Kirby Smart has shared that he put a couple of deserving Dawgs on scholarship after the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. Here’s who he rewarded for their efforts to the Georgia football program:

Safety Jaylen Johnson reportedly out for year with torn ACL

We’ve got our first major casualty of fall camp when it comes to injuries.

[mm-video type=video id=01fcvcng61nhjb86jpnk playlist_id=01eqbz0qtnjg5x7tc8 player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fcvcng61nhjb86jpnk/01fcvcng61nhjb86jpnk-28fc0e12f76d78e56ed7ac2b19f5af5e.jpg]

It’s almost inevitable. Every year it seems, there is a major injury when fall preseason camp gets underway that is a devasting one and it has hit Ohio State again.

Last year, Kourt Williams was one of the names lost for the year with a torn ACL, and now it appears as though freshman safety Jaylen Johnson is out with the same injury according to news first reported by Lettermen Row’s Austin Ward. There has yet to be any official word from the OSU program.

Johnson came to Ohio State as a 3-star recruit in the class of 2021. He was not expected to be a major contributor this season, but any loss in a secondary that is looking for depth and answers after a season full of unmet expectations could be a big one.

The Cincinnati native just arrived on campus this summer and was beginning to get his feet wet, but it now looks like any game time will have to wait until next season.

UGA football player card: WR Jaylen Johnson

Georgia Bulldogs WR Jaylen Johnson went viral following a small act of kindness.

Jaylen Johnson, Wide Receiver (#81):

Class: Redshirt Sophomore

Height: 6-2

Weight: 192 pounds

Hometown: Duluth, Georgia

High School: Peachtree High School

Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Jaylen Johnson came to Athens as an unheralded recruit. The six-foot-two target walked on to the football team as a freshman in 2018. Throughout the 2018 season he was a fixture on the scout team.

Last season Johnson played in three games against: Georgia Tech, Murray State, and Arkansas State. He’ll look to carve out a larger role with the team in 2020.

Georgia’s offense is replacing Lawrence Cager after he was undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft. George Pickens is the clear cut number one wide receiver in 2020, but beyond him Georgia will have lots of competition at the position.

49ers go out of the box at WR in analytics mock draft

Two Jalens (or Jaylens) go to the 49ers in a 2020 NFL mock draft based on analytics at Pro Football Focus.

Different is intriguing with a glut of mock drafts surfacing in the lead up to the 2020 NFL draft. Most mocks have the same two or three players heading to San Francisco with the No. 13 pick, and perhaps a handful of different projections for the No. 31 slot. Pro Football Focus gave a big shakeup with their Analytics Mock Draft 2.0.

PFF devises the analytics mock based on two criteria: positional value and college-to-pro projections. Here’s how the analytics site explains each of those elements:

1. Positional value – Our goal isn’t to pick the eventual rookie of the year, it’s to win a Super Bowl. Saquon Barkley is awesome at his job, but his job doesn’t contribute to winning nearly as much as that of his quarterback. Players who impact the passing game have the most value, and that is reflected here.

2. Our college-to-pro projections – We take into account how each player grades in different situations in college and train algorithms to project performance into a set of NFL situations. We also take into account the prospect’s athletic profile with respect to each facet of play. Here is a more in-depth look at these projections for stud playmaker Isaiah Simmons from Clemson, for example.

Those two criteria lead to an intriguing mock. Wide receiver Henry Ruggs III, a popular mock choice for San Francisco, is gone to the Giants with the fourth pick. Ruggs’ college teammate Jerry Jeudy, another frequent 49ers mock selection, goes No. 6 to the Chargers, and CeeDee Lamb is off the board to the Jets at No. 11.

With the top three receivers off the board by No. 13, the 49ers threw a curveball in the analytics mock and selected TCU wide receiver Jalen Reagor.

Reagor, 5-11, 206 pounds, is built almost identical to Deebo Samuel, but with a slightly different skill set. He never posted monster production for the Horned Frogs, racking up 148 catches, 2,248 yards and 22 touchdowns across three seasons. His best year was his sophomore campaign when he hauled in 72 balls for 1,061 yards and nine scores. He also rushed 13 times that year for 170 yards and two touchdowns.

While sliding a Samuel-like receiver in next to Samuel isn’t exactly what would most help the 49ers offense, PFF’s Eric Eager noted that Reagor compares analytically to Allen Robinson. That’s the type of player that would fit nicely in San Francisco’s receiving corps. Sprinkle in the versatility he showed during his sophomore season and the Reagor pick starts to track logically.

In reality, if the 49ers are all in on Reagor being their guy, they may be able to move back a few spots from 13 to acquire more draft capital in the middle rounds, and still select Reagor later in the first.

The 49ers’ additional first-round selection checks their need at cornerback. With the 31st pick, PFF sends Utah cornerback Jaylon Johnson to Santa Clara.

Even though corner may not top their list of needs, the value of a deep secondary outweighs the value they may get from another position. That’s why Johnson, a 6-0, 193-pound Fresno, Calif. native, is the selection.

The raw numbers are strong with seven interceptions and 27 pass breakups across three seasons with the Utes, but PFF’s George Chahrouri has the money stat. Johnson allowed a passer rating of just 57.9 on balls thrown his way in college.

Another big, physical corner with strong ball skills would fit seamlessly into the 49ers’ secondary. He’d push for a starting job right away, and would be in line to supplant Richard Sherman if he doesn’t re-sign with San Francisco after this season.

How the 49ers choose to operate in the 2020 draft will set the table for their next five or so years. What positions they pick matter less than those selections actually contributing in the near future. For now, a wide receiver and a corner early in the draft make sense.

Ohio State gets 2021 commitment from 3-star safety

The Ohio State football program got a commitment from 3-star Ohio defensive back Jaylen Johnson for the 2021 class Tuesday.

Ryan Day and the Ohio State football program got its eighth commitment for the class of 2021 today. Three-star safety Jaylen Johnson announced on Twitter today that he will be playing his college football for the Buckeyes.

From La Salle High School in the Cincinnati area, the 6-1, 205 lb. Johnson is the No. 18 rated safety in the class, and the eleventh overall recruit from Ohio according to 247Sports. With the losses to graduation, and the flip and uncertainty of a couple of defensive backs for the 2020 class, Johnson’s commitment could be a big one for the future.

The news bolsters a class that’s already off to some great momentum, and ranks as the top in the country to date.

As a reminder, Ohio State will be watching a commitment decision coming from four-star offensive lineman Donovan Jackson coming tomorrow.
