With JT Daniels battling injury, Carson Beck might get the start: Who is he?

JT Daniels is reportedly battling an upper-body injury. If he misses Saturday’s game, expect Carson Beck to get the start. Here’s some info on the redshirt freshman passer.

Georgia quarterback JT Daniels is reportedly dealing with an upper body injury that has escalated his status to “questionable” for Saturday’s home-opener against UAB.

Daniels may end up playing. He played the entire Clemson game with the injury apparently — DawgNation is reporting that Daniels suffered the injury in the preseason during Georgia’s second scrimmage.

Daniels’ status is questionable for this Saturday’s game. He could very well end up starting and playing, as DawgNation’s Mike Griffith reports that Daniels first picked up the injury during Georgia’s second scrimmage.

But it’s UAB. Is it worth the risk?

I don’t think it is and I have a feeling the Georgia coaches would agree. No matter who UGA puts at quarterback, the Dawgs should have no issue winning this game. The smart thing to do would be to sit your superstar quarterback. It’s a long season.

If Daniels is to sit this one out, expect Carson Beck to get the start at quarterback. If you follow recruiting closely you are already familiar with Beck. But for those who are just now learning of the backup quarterback, here’s some information to get you up to speed.

Dec 12, 2020; Georgia QB Carson Beck (15) takes a snap against Missouri: Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

Carson Beck, Quarterback (No. 15):

Class: Redshirt Freshman

Height: 6-4

Weight: 215 pounds

Hometown: Jacksonville, Florida

High School: Mandarin High School

As a recruit:

Beck enrolled early at the University of Georgia. He was a four-star recruit in the class of 2020 out of Mandarin High School in Jacksonville, Florida.

Beck ranked as the nation’s No. 234 overall player and the No. 5 ranked pro-style passer.

Additionally, before coming to Athens, Beck competed at the prestigious 2019 Elite 11 camp.

Freshman season:

Beck picked up a redshirt as a freshman. He played late against the Missouri Tigers in 2020, but did not have a chance to throw a pass. We expect to see him more often this year, even if he does not make the start against UAB.

Played well at G-Day:

Redshirt freshman quarterback Beck got the majority of the reps for the Black team in the spring game. Beck gained valuable experience and played pretty well, finishing the contest with 236 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He went 22 of 31 on his passing attempts.

“I’m pleased with his progress. I think he got better,” Smart said following G-Day. “Carson didn’t always have the focus he needed last year as a freshman in terms of preparation, academics, on the field, off the field, in the meeting room.

“Now since we started this spring, he’s taken notes, he’s got command of it better. He’s doing better academically in the classroom. He’s trying to take a step forward and do some good things.”

Reports: Georgia QB JT Daniels dealing with injury

According to Dean Legge of DawgPost, Georgia quarterback JT Daniels is dealing with “an upper-body injury.”

It does not appear to be too serious, as DawgPost reports the quarterback has still been practicing with the team.

Daniels has missed some reps with the No. 1 unit this week that he typically would have taken. However, Dawg Post can confirm that Daniels has taken part in practices this week.

247Sports is reporting that Daniels is considered “questionable” for this Saturday’s game against UAB.

247Sports wrote that Daniels’ injury is to his core, and added that it’s likely his ribs or oblique.

When Daniels suffered the injury is unknown, but if it were prior to the Clemson game that would justify the lack of downfield shots Georgia took.

Per 247Sports, former 4-star Carson Beck received a majority of the first team snaps on Tuesday. If Daniels is unable to play against UAB, expect Beck to get the start.

Head coach Kirby Smart has not yet commented on this.

Georgia football’s offense is absolutely loaded headed into the 2021 season. The Bulldogs have their top rushers and receivers returning along with  gunslinger quarterback J.T. Daniels for a chance at a title.

Daniels made his first start against Mississippi State in game 7 last season and had about the best first game DawgNation could have asked for.

Daniels threw for 401 yards and four touchdowns on the way to a home-win and would go on to win his next three starts and ended the year with a win in the Peach Bowl versus a stout Cincinnati defense.

But what exactly makes Daniels such a good quarterback?

Pro Football Focus (PFF) grades each player on every snap throughout each season. In 2020, Daniels was graded as the best quarterback against the blitz in all of college football, boasting a near perfect 141.8 passer rating.

Daniels totaled 1,273 yards on 80 for 119 passing (67%) with 10 touchdowns and two interceptions in four games played.

One can only imagine what a full season will look like after a productive offseason and in-person workouts. The sky is the limit for this offensive unit DawgNation!

Jackson Muschamp, Quarterback (No. 14):

Class: Redshirt freshman

Height: 6-2

Weight: 190 pounds

Hometown: Columbia, South Carolina

High School: Hammond School

Georgia Bulldogs redshirt freshman quarterback Jackson Muschamp originally committed to Colorado State, but decided to commit to the University of Georgia as a preferred walk-on.

He did not play as a freshman and took a redshirt in 2020.

Jackson Muschamp is the son of Georgia defensive analyst and former South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp. Jackson is a big part of the reason why Will Muschamp decided to come to Athens following his dismissal at South Carolina.

Jackson Muschamp is following in the footsteps of his dad, who walked on to the team in Athens. Will Muschamp played at Georgia from 1991-1994. Much like Kirby Smart, Will Muschamp played safety for UGA. The two coach barely missed playing in Athens together as Kirby Smart played with Georgia from 1995-1998.

Georgia’s quarterback room has a lot of depth this season and beyond. JT Daniels is projected to start at quarterback for the Dawgs. Carson Beck, Stetson Bennett, and Brock Vandagriff are considered the top competitors at back-up quarterback.

What Georgia QB JT Daniels said after 10th spring practice

Georgia quarterback JT Daniels spoke to the media following the Bulldogs’ 10th spring practice on Tuesday. Here’s what Daniels had to say.

Georgia football is in its third week of spring practice and just five practices away from G-Day, the annual spring game held in Sanford Stadium.

After Tuesday’s practice, coach Kirby Smart and several players spoke to the media, including quarterback JT Daniels. The former USC transfer took UGA and the SEC by storm when he replaced Stetson Bennett versus Mississippi State and went on to throw for 401 yards and four touchdowns. He finished the season undefeated and with a win over No. 8 Cincinnati in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. Now, the Heisman hopeful leads a loaded Bulldog roster into a potential championship season.

Here’s what the junior signal caller said:

  • On what being a quarterback means to him…

“I think, first and foremost, it starts with how you approach everything you do, especially as a veteran now. This is my fourth season in college football. I remember when I was coming in how I looked up to the older guys in the building, and I can only imagine that other guys look up to the Lewis Cines [and] guys that have been here for a while, and others that have played a lot of ball like myself. The first thing is how it starts with how you approach everything, and I think it’s also really important how I’ve focused on is just my overall body language and my mannerisms. I’ve always been just more of a laid-back kind of guy, especially on the field. I’ve never been a hype man, that’s just never been my thing. But I’ve put more effort into not just words of encouragement but trying to keep everyone focused on task if someone is not doing the right thing. And if I’m not doing the right thing, someone is going to tell me, and I’ve got to do the same thing and dish it out. But there’s just a lot of areas of leadership that I’ve really tried to take a step.”

  • On when he took the role as leader on the team…

“I think that something we talk about a lot as a team is that everybody on the team is a leader, whether you are just joining and you are a walk-on, or if you are a Jamaree Salyer, or a Lewis [Cine], you’re [Ameer] Speed, or anyone of them. I think obviously your role expands the more you play, and you just have a bigger platform in that area. But I think that since I’ve been here, I’ve always tried to take the approach of first leading by example, then once I think you earn a certain level of trust in your teammates, from them seeing how you work and knowing that you’re here for them, then you can start being more vocal and doing more things.”

  • On what it means that Coach Smart named him this season’s starting QB…

“The first thing is that it is a really great honor to be a starting Division I quarterback, especially at a program like Georgia. And to hear from your coach that you do try really hard to show out for, it’s something that is really cool to hear. And it definitely is a confidence booster just to hear that your coach believes in you.”

Georgia QB JT Daniels hints at 2021 return

Georgia quarterback JT Daniels hinted at his return to Athens for the 2021 season in an Instagram post on Monday. Details here.

Georgia football’s 2021 roster will look much different than this year’s squad that finished 8-2 and capped the season off with a 24-21 win over undefeated Cincinnati in the Peach Bowl.

One major question Georgia faces is who will be at quarterback when the Bulldogs travel to Clemson to kickoff the 2021 season on Sept. 4.

As of today, it seems JT Daniels will lead the Bulldogs into Death Valley. The redshirt sophomore USC transfer hinted at his return to Athens in an Instagram post on Monday.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CJomy_nAW4M/?igshid=w9olwotkh9y2

Daniels only played Georgia’s final four games, but along with not losing a game, he was extremely effective, throwing for 1,231 yards and 10 touchdowns with 2 interceptions.

With a full offseason to study the Bulldogs’ offensive scheme led by offensive coordinator Todd Monken, we can only imagine what Daniels can do with all of the offensive weapons that will surround him in the fall.

George Pickens, Kearis Jackson, Jermaine Burton, Darnell ‘Big O’ Washington, Arian Smith and a healthy Dominick Blaylock just to name a few.

Report: JT Daniels to start Saturday vs. Mississippi State

According to a report from Matt Zenitz, USC transfer quarterback J.T. Daniels is set to get his first start for Georgia on Saturday night.

According to a Wednesday night report from Matt Zenitz of Al.com, USC transfer quarterback J.T. Daniels is set to get his first start for Georgia on Saturday night, taking over for junior Stetson Bennett, who has been battling a shoulder injury.

Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart told reporters in his Mississippi State press conference on Wednesday that all quarterbacks have been competing during Georgia’s extra week-off after last week’s game vs. Missouri was postponed due to COVID-19 inside the Tigers’ program.

Either Bennett or redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis have played every snap at signal caller this year, making Saturday not only Daniels’ first start, but also his first ever snaps as a Georgia Bulldog.

As a freshman at USC in 2018, Daniels threw for 2,672 yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He entered the transfer portal in mid-April after his sophomore season was derailed by a knee injury. USC’s Kedon Slovis stepped in while Daniels was down and played well for the Trojans, making the transfer portal one of the only options for Daniels.

Since his arrival in Athens, Daniels has nursed his previously injured knee, taking snaps as scout team quarterback and taking some first team reps, but his mobility has kept him from seeing the field, until now.

“His mobility is getting better,” Smart said in his Wednesday press conference.

It will be fascinating to see what Daniels can do with limited reps, he will be facing a subpar Mississippi State defense rated at No. 35 in the country, so I expect to see his experience and throwing ability shine Saturday night.

Make sure you’re caught up on Georgia Football before the game! I breakdown everything you need to know before the Dawgs take on Mississippi State in this week’s episode of the UGA Football Live with J.C. Shelton podcast, featuring special guest, former UGA All-American punter Drew Butler. Listen here:

ESPN ranks D’Wan Mathis as most important player in 2020 CFP chase

ESPN released their 25 most important players in the College Football Playoff chase, ranking Georgia football QB D’Wan Mathis at No. 1.

ESPN released their list of the 25 most important players in the College Football Playoff chase, ranking Georgia quarterbacks J.T. Daniels and D’Wan Mathis at No. 1.

Mathis was originally committed to Ohio State before he flipped his commitment to Georgia following Justin Fields’ decision to transfer to the Buckeyes in 2018.  Mathis was informed in 2019 that he had a cyst on his brain that required serious surgery.  This medical issue threatened Mathis’ football career, with doctors telling him he might never step on a field and play football again.

Now, the redshirt freshman Mathis will defy the odds, starting under center in his first collegiate game this Saturday against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Graduate transfer quarterback Jamie Newman announced on September 2nd that he was opting out of the 2020 college football season, due to COVID-19 concerns, and will focus on the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft. That decision left Georgia’s quarterback position wide open for the taking.

Many thought USC transfer J.T. Daniels would get the nod, but Daniels is still not fully cleared for contact from his ACL tear he suffered a season ago.  The 6-foot-5, 205 pound Mathis has been listed as Georgia’s starter going into Week One, following some very solid weeks impressing head coach Kirby Smart and offensive coordinator Todd Monken at training camp.

Mathis will have a plethora of weapons at his disposal.  Zamir White and James Cook headline the Georgia backfield, giving Mathis some great options in the run game and short passing game.  Mathis will also have his deep target in sophomore wide receiver George Pickens, who led the team in all receiving categories his freshman year.

From almost having his football career ended to being named the starting quarterback of the Georgia Bulldogs, Mathis is an amazing sports story that the entirety of the college football world will be watching this Saturday.

Here’s what ESPN’s Bill Connelly had to say about Mathis and his impact on this year’s College Football Playoff chase:

A new starting QB who has the potential to wreck his opponents’ title dreams and fulfill his own frustrated program’s ambitions? Sounds like the most important player in college football to me.

1. QB JT Daniels or D’Wan Mathis, Georgia: Daniels was No. 8 on this list last year, when it looked like he was getting tasked with saving Clay Helton’s job at USC. He got hurt in the first game, however, and lost his job to sudden star Kedon Slovis. Now at Georgia, Daniels could be the guy to push the Dawgs out of last year’s “all-world defense, terribly limited offense” imbalance. But first he has to be cleared for competition.

His ongoing recovery from injury has opened the door for Mathis, who spent 2019 on the sideline after having a cyst removed from his brain. Mathis has apparently impressed head coach Kirby Smart and new offensive coordinator Todd Monken.

It doesn’t really matter who ends up starting here; it only matters that whoever it is thrives. Georgia will start 2020 with the most proven defense in college football, and while the offense could use another top skill-corps player, it still has a couple of proven linemen in receiver George Pickens, running backs Zamir White and James Cook and a new batch of blue-chippers. With great quarterback play, the Dawgs go from SEC East co-favorites to, potentially, national title co-favorites. Sounds like the QB of choice is the most important player in the country to me.

Former Georgia QB Aaron Murray says of current UGA QB D’Wan Mathis – ‘extremely impressive’

Former Georgia quarterbacK Aaron Murray says current UGA QB D’Wan Mathis ‘extremely impressive.’ Details and analysis here.

Georgia football’s quarterback competition will be interesting to watch after projected starter Jamie Newman’s decision to opt-out of the 2020 CFB season.

Intersting, yet nerve racking.

The Bulldogs are left with USC transfer J.T. Daniels, redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis, fourth-year junior Stetson Bennett and freshman Carson Beck.

Daniels is by far the most tenured quarterback on the list.

Before a knee injury derailed his 2019 season – ultimately leading to him signing with the Bulldogs in July – Daniels threw for 2,672 yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on a 59.5 % completion rate at USC in 2018.

Daniels will be the favorite to start for Georgia against Arkansas week one, but don’t count out the other guys in the room just yet.

Take Mathis for example. He came to Georgia in 2019 rated as the No. 11 pro style quarterback and showed flashes of brilliance in scrimmages until surgery to remove a brain cyst sidelined him for the rest of 2019.

He is now fully cleared and competing for the starting spot.

In a Tweet Wednesday afternoon, after reports of Newman’s decision to transfer, former Georgi quarterback Aaron Murray gave his thoughts on Mathis’ abilities.

Any input from the SEC’s all-time leading passer is welcome here. If Mathis can impress Murray, maybe we are too quick to crown Daniels as the starter just yet.
