Former Georgia QB Aaron Murray says of current UGA QB D’Wan Mathis – ‘extremely impressive’

Former Georgia quarterbacK Aaron Murray says current UGA QB D’Wan Mathis ‘extremely impressive.’ Details and analysis here.

Georgia football’s quarterback competition will be interesting to watch after projected starter Jamie Newman’s decision to opt-out of the 2020 CFB season.

Intersting, yet nerve racking.

The Bulldogs are left with USC transfer J.T. Daniels, redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis, fourth-year junior Stetson Bennett and freshman Carson Beck.

Daniels is by far the most tenured quarterback on the list.

Before a knee injury derailed his 2019 season – ultimately leading to him signing with the Bulldogs in July – Daniels threw for 2,672 yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on a 59.5 % completion rate at USC in 2018.

Daniels will be the favorite to start for Georgia against Arkansas week one, but don’t count out the other guys in the room just yet.

Take Mathis for example. He came to Georgia in 2019 rated as the No. 11 pro style quarterback and showed flashes of brilliance in scrimmages until surgery to remove a brain cyst sidelined him for the rest of 2019.

He is now fully cleared and competing for the starting spot.

In a Tweet Wednesday afternoon, after reports of Newman’s decision to transfer, former Georgi quarterback Aaron Murray gave his thoughts on Mathis’ abilities.

Any input from the SEC’s all-time leading passer is welcome here. If Mathis can impress Murray, maybe we are too quick to crown Daniels as the starter just yet.

Twitter reacts to Georgia quarterback Jamie Newman’s decision to opt-out of the 2020 CFB season

Here is how UGA Twitter reacted to the recent news of Georgia quarterback Jamie Newman’s decision to opt-out of the 2020 CFB season.

Wow, that stings. Georgia’s new heralded gunslinger Jamie Newman has decided to opt-out of the 2020 college football season and will be preparing for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Can’t say I don’t blame him for doing so, but that doesn’t make it any easier to swollow.

We were excited to say the least when Newman chose to finish his collegiate career at Georgia. And all we’ve heard this summer is about how Newman was one of the top returning quarterbacks in college football, so losing him just weeks before the opening is disheartening.

Here is how UGA Twitter reacted to the recent news:

Georgia football play of the day – Georgia vs Auburn (2017)

Watch the Georgia football play of the day here!

It’s Tuesday, September 1, just 25 days until Georgia football is scheduled to kick off versus Arkansas.

Today’s play of the day comes from the 2017 SEC Championship game which featured No. 6 Georgia and No. 2 Auburn.

Auburn had thrashed the Bulldogs in their annual regular season matchup 40-17, so Georgia was looking for some redemption this time around.

We pick up early in the second quarter with the Tigers up 7-0. Auburn has controlled the pace of the game so far and faces a third and six from the Georgia 14 yard line.

Watch what happened next here:

A turning point for Georgia who would go on to score 28 unanswered points and secure its first SEC title since 2005. Truly an outstanding defensive performance by the Bulldogs in this one.

Auburn star quarterback Jarret Stidham was held to 145 yards passing and the Tigers offense tallied just 259 total yards.

Watch: Georgia freshman TE Darnell Washington’s insane high school tape

Watch the former 5-star recruit’s highlight tape here!

5-star Dessert Pines recruit Darnell Washington signed with Georgia as the No. 2 athlete, the No. 1 player in Nevada and the No. 23 overall recruit in the Bulldogs’ No. 1 class of 2020.

At 6-foot-7 260 pounds, Washington is already a miss match for opposing defenders.

The Under Armor All-American will wear No. 0 for the Bulldogs, which should make for a great target for Georgia quarterbacks when the Bulldogs kick off versus Arkansas on Sept 26.

Watch Washington’s dominant high school tape here:

Washington could be an absolute monster for Georgia, and with the departure of tight ends Eli Wolfe and Charlie Woerner, the Bulldogs will need to find production in the middle of the field.

UGA Twitter reacts to Justin Fields’ visit to Athens

Here is what Twitter had to say when Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields showed up to UGA’s preseason scrimmage Saturday.

Ohio State quaterback Justin Fields’ made the news Saturday, when the former Georgia signal caller visited the Bulldogs in Athens for their first preseason scrimmage.

According to Dawgnation, the Kennesaw, Georgia native was in the stands, not on the sideline.

Here are some Georgia football Twitter reactions to Fields visit:

Texas Tech limits home games to 25% capacity, will require face coverings. Will Georgia follow?

Texas Tech becomes the 4th school to reportedly plan to limit stadium capacity. Could UGA eventually release a similar plan for Sanford?

Per college football insider Brett McMurphy, Texas Tech University will limit its football stadium’s capacity to maximum of 25%, as well as institute a face covering requirement to both fans and staff at all home football games.

Texas, Ohio State and LSU have all reportedly planned to limit the capacity of their iconic football stadiums due to the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, now Texas Tech follows suit.

Sad thoughts, of course, to Ohio State with the Big Ten’s plan to postpone until spring.

But the real question is, with four major Power Five school’s already releasing a plan to limit stadium capacity – how long before more SEC schools, or specifically the University of Georgia follows with a similar plan?

UGA plans to have face-to-face classes starting Aug 20 – until late November when classes move online – and in early July, UGA listed a limited capacity ‘option‘ in a plan release by a UGA athletics group: Plans for a Phased Return to Full Operations.

Things said, I could definitely see Georgia doing something with Stanford Stadium this year that is similar to the schools who have college towns similar to Athens.

Athens is definitely one of those historic places at risk with so many small business in one place and, without students or fans, I suspect it wouldn’t be the city DawgNation knows and loves before long.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on college football: “I want to see it played”

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp took to Twitter to give his statement on the current college football situation. Read his quotes here

With the Big Ten and Pac-12 electing to postpone their respective seasons to the spring of 2021, the SEC, ACC and Big 12 conferences are still scrambling to find a way to play football this fall.

A day after President Donald Trump said it would be a “tragic mistake” not to play football this fall, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp took to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon to give his statement on the prospect of college football in Georgia.

Kemp wrote:

ā€œAcross the South, college football is a sacred tradition, and I want to see it played this year if we can ensure the safety of players, coaches and staff.”

Kemp retweeted SEC commissioner Greg Sankey’s Tuesday tweet that came after the Big 10 and Pac-12’s postponement decision. Sankey said he “remains comfortable”, with the SEC’s approach to playing football duringĀ  the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although the league continues to deliberate how the season can go on, SEC practices are scheduled to begin Monday and, as of now, kickoff is slated for Sept. 26.

Watch the Georgia football play of the day here!

It’s Thursday, August 13 and today’s play of the day comes from the 2018 match up between the No. 2 Bulldogs and unranked Tennessee at Sanford Stadium.

The Bulldogs marched right down the field on their first possession of the game, that is until they faced a third and long from Tennessee’s 31 yard line.

Watch what happened next here:

Plays don’t always work how they’re supposed to but as long as it ends with a Georgia touchdown, that’s all that matters!

The Bulldogs would go on to win 38-12, behind two-touchdown performances by both quarterback Justin Fields and running back D’Andre Swift.
