Every NFL draft pick coached by James Franklin

Zac Stacy, Jordan Matthews, Saquon Barkley, Micah Parsons, and every other NFL draft pick who played for James Franklin.

[autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] got his first head coaching opportunity with Vanderbilt after the 2010 season despite previously being the head coach-in-waiting at Maryland. The Commodores are not necessarily known for producing a tremendous amount of NFL talent, but Vanderbilt managed to send a few players off to the next level by way of the NFL draft under the guidance of Franklin, who has experience as an assistant coach in the NFL.

In the years Franklin was the head coach at Vanderbilt, from 2011 through 2013, Vanderbilt had seven players drafted. And a few more who would go on to be drafted later on out of Vanderbilt were brought into the program initially by Franklin and his staff. The seven players drafted from Vanderbilt from Franklin’s three seasons with the program is the most draft picks from Vanderbilt in a three-year span in school history since 1957-1969 saw 11 players selected by NFL teams, in the days of a draft lasting at least 20 rounds.

Since arriving at Penn State in 2014, Franklin has seen a growing number of his players go on to be drafted by NFL franchises, including an offensive rookie of the year in running back [autotag]Saquon Barkley[/autotag] in 2018 and a defensive rookie of the year in linebacker [autotag]Micah Parsons[/autotag] in 2021.

Here is a look at every player drafted by an NFL team that had James Franklin as a head coach in their last game before being drafted, beginning with Franklin’s time at Vanderbilt.

And once you are done checking out this list, here is a list of every Penn State player drafted in the first round of the NFL draft since Penn State joined the Big Ten.

2022 NFL draft: Penn State cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields selected by 49ers

Penn State cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields is officially off the board at the 2022 NFL draft

One of the key defensive players for the Penn State defense in 2021 is now officially heading to the NFL. Cornerback [autotag]Tariq Castro-Fields[/autotag] saw his dream become a reality when the San Francisco drafted him in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft on Saturday.

Casto-Fields made the decision to return for his extra year of eligibility in 2021 after seeing his 2020 season cut short due to injury. That allowed Castro-fields to have a steady season on the playing field that ultimately helped lead to receiving an invite to the Senior Bowl.

Castro-Fields is the latest cornerback from Penn State to be drafted by an NFL franchise, joining recent draft picks such as [autotag]John Reid[/autotag] (2020), [autotag]Amani Oruwariye[/autotag] (2019), [autotag]Nick Scott[/autotag] (2019), [autotag]Troy Apke[/autotag] (2018), [autotag]Chris Campbell[/autotag] (2018) and [autotag]Marcus Allen[/autotag] (2018), [autotag]Jordan Lucas[/autotag] (2016), and [autotag]Adrian Amos[/autotag] (2015).

Castro-Fields is the fourth Nittany Lion to be selected in the 2022 NFL draft. Wide receiver [autotag]Jahan Dotson[/autotag] was a first-round pick of the Washington Commanders, [autotag]Arnold Ebiketie[/autotag] went early in the second round to the Atlanta Falcons and [autotag]Jaquan Brisker[/autotag] was selected by the Chicago Bears later in the second round. Linebacker [autotag]Brandon Smith[/autotag] went to the Carolina Panthers in the fourth round, and punter [autotag]Jordan Stout[/autotag] ended up with the Baltimore Ravens later in the fourth round.

Colts cut S Jordan Lucas from practice squad IR

Colts released S Jordan Lucas from the practice squad injured reserve list.

The Indianapolis Colts released safety Jordan Lucas from the practice squad injured reserve list on Tuesday, per the league’s transaction wire.

Lucas suffered a knee injury during the Week 6 win over the Houston Texans when he was called up from the practice squad as a gameday addition. Following the game, he was placed on the practice squad injured reserve list.

Lucas signed with the Colts to their practice squad on Sept. 29 and will now have the chance to sign with another team as a free agent.

Colts’ Jordan Lucas (knee) ruled OUT vs. Texans

Colts S Jordan Lucas suffered a knee injury and won’t return against the Texans.

Indianapolis Colts safety Jordan Lucas suffered a knee injury and won’t return against the Houston Texans on Sunday.

It isn’t clear when Lucas suffered the knee injury. He was signed to the practice squad this week and elevated along with kicker Michael Badgley.

Andrew Sendejo was inactive for the game against the Texans because of a concussion he suffered in Week 5. The safety room will now consist of Khari Willis, Julian Blackmon and George Odum.

Colts activate WR T.Y. Hilton from IR among several roster moves

Colts activated WR T.Y. Hilton from IR, elevated K Michael Badgley & Jordan Lucas and placed K Rodrigo Blankenship on IR.

The Indianapolis Colts activated wide receiver T.Y. Hilton from the injured reserve list among many roster moves, the team announced Saturday.

Hilton returned to practice this week and even though he only truly had one practice (Wednesday and Thursday were walkthroughs), the team feels confident in his conditioning to see his debut against the Houston Texans on Sunday.

It isn’t clear how many snaps Hilton will get in the game. There is a chance the Colts limit him due to the fact that he hasn’t had much football conditioning while recovering on the injured reserve list throughout the season.

That said, his history against the Texans is always worth a shot to get him on the field.

Among the other moves made, the Colts elevated kicker Michael Badgley and safety Jordan Lucas from the practice squad to the active roster. Badgley was signed this week due to the hip injury keeping Rodrigo Blankenship out.

Blankenship was the other move. The Colts placed him on the injured reserve list, essentially swapping him with Hilton. The hip injury had the potential to cause Blankenship to miss two games so it makes sense to get him off the active roster so he can heal up.

With Badgley and Lucas elevated, the roster is at 55 players for game day.

Colts protect practice squad CB Marvell Tell, S Jordan Lucas in Week 6

The Colts protect practice squad CB Marvell Tell and S Jordan Lucas in Week 6.

The Indianapolis Colts protected practice squad cornerback Marvell Tell and safety Jordan Lucas for the Week 6 matchup against the Houston Texans, per the league’s transaction wire.

The secondary for the Colts has been ravaged by injuries during the course of the early season so it makes sense the team would want to protect some of its assets at cornerback and safety.

Tell, the fifth-round pick from 2019, was released by the Colts during roster cuts following the preseason. He was re-signed to the practice squad before the start of the regular season.

Lucas, a former sixth-round pick with the Miami Dolphins, was signed to the practice squad on Sept. 29 and now could see a role as an elevated player with Ibraheim Campbell landing on the injured reserve with ankle and knee injuries.

6 takeaways from the Bears’ 16th training camp practice

From Jesper Horsted’s big day to the quarterback bucket challenge, here’s what we learned from Wednesday’s Bears practice.

The Chicago Bears returned to practice Wednesday for their 16th practice, which was quite an eventful day. This time, however, they were without their rookie quarterback in tow as Justin Fields was held out due to a sore groin.

With Fields standing off to the side, veterans Andy Dalton and Nick Foles took charge of the offense in a somewhat watered down practice. The offense rebounded after a rough outing on Tuesday and quite a few players stood out.

For me, this was my first day attending camp live so I have my own takeaways from what I saw in Wednesday’s practice.

Bears training camp: 1 player currently on the roster bubble at each position

Heading into the Bears’ first preseason game, here’s a look at one player who’s on the roster bubble at each position.

The Chicago Bears released their first unofficial depth chart ahead of Saturday’s preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins, where there were some surprises, and it gave us a look at how the 53-man roster could ultimately shake out.

There are a handful of players who are on the roster bubble, as indicated by the depth chart and how training camp has unfolded over the first couple of weeks.

Heading into the Bears’ first preseason game, here’s a look at one player who’s on the roster bubble at each position.

Report: Bears sign veteran safety Marqui Christian

Tashaun Gipson and Deon Bush will battle for the starting safety job. But now, there’s another safety in the mix for the Bears.

The Chicago Bears have a vacancy at safety opposite two-time Pro Bowler Eddie Jackson. And they’re going to have some real competition at safety in training camp.

Tashaun Gipson and Deon Bush will battle for the starting job with just training camp reps. But now, there’s another safety in the mix.

The Bears signed veteran safety Marqui Christian, according to reports from Turron Davenport and Chris Emma. Chicago met with Christian on Sunday.

Earlier this offseason, the Bears signed veteran Jordan Lucas to a one-year deal. But following Lucas’ decision to opt out of the 2020 season due to health and safety concerns amid COVID-19, Chicago was down a safety. Which is why they brought in Christian.

Christian, a former fifth-round pick out of Midwestern State, recorded 83 tackles, three pass breakups and one tackle for loss in four seasons with the Los Angeles Rams.

If Christian were to find a home with the Bears, he wouldn’t be available until Week 3. According to Field Yates, Christian was suspended for the first two weeks of the regular season. Earlier this offseason, he agreed to a deal with the New York Jets in free agency that eventually fell through.

The Bears had a visit with former Rams safety Marqui Christian

The Bears did some homework on free-agent safety Marqui Christian, who played four seasons with the Rams.

Following Jordan Lucas’ decision to opt out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns, the Chicago Bears lost a veteran safety they were likely going to carry on their 53-man roster.

While Eddie Jackson, Tashaun Gipson and Deon Bush are locks to make the roster, there are certainly some options for that fourth safety spot, including DeAndre Houston-Carson and Sherrick McManis. But it hasn’t stopped the Bears from exploring other veterans on the free-agent market.

The Bears met with veteran safety Marqui Christian on Sunday, according to Albert Breer.
