Every NFL draft pick coached by James Franklin

Zac Stacy, Jordan Matthews, Saquon Barkley, Micah Parsons, and every other NFL draft pick who played for James Franklin.

[autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] got his first head coaching opportunity with Vanderbilt after the 2010 season despite previously being the head coach-in-waiting at Maryland. The Commodores are not necessarily known for producing a tremendous amount of NFL talent, but Vanderbilt managed to send a few players off to the next level by way of the NFL draft under the guidance of Franklin, who has experience as an assistant coach in the NFL.

In the years Franklin was the head coach at Vanderbilt, from 2011 through 2013, Vanderbilt had seven players drafted. And a few more who would go on to be drafted later on out of Vanderbilt were brought into the program initially by Franklin and his staff. The seven players drafted from Vanderbilt from Franklin’s three seasons with the program is the most draft picks from Vanderbilt in a three-year span in school history since 1957-1969 saw 11 players selected by NFL teams, in the days of a draft lasting at least 20 rounds.

Since arriving at Penn State in 2014, Franklin has seen a growing number of his players go on to be drafted by NFL franchises, including an offensive rookie of the year in running back [autotag]Saquon Barkley[/autotag] in 2018 and a defensive rookie of the year in linebacker [autotag]Micah Parsons[/autotag] in 2021.

Here is a look at every player drafted by an NFL team that had James Franklin as a head coach in their last game before being drafted, beginning with Franklin’s time at Vanderbilt.

And once you are done checking out this list, here is a list of every Penn State player drafted in the first round of the NFL draft since Penn State joined the Big Ten.

No 49ers left on COVID-19 list after roster moves

The #49ers don’t have any players on the COVID-19 list after Friday’s roster moves. Plus, a DL in as another retires.

The 49ers on Friday announced four roster moves, including the removal of two players from the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

With that San Francisco no longer has any player on that list. Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley came off the list first, leaving the two that came off Friday.

Here’s a quick rundown of the roster moves:

Former Penn State DE Anthony Zettel retires from professional football

Former Penn State defensive lineman Anthony Zettel has announced his retirement from the NFL

A former Penn State defensive lineman has called it a career in the NFL. Anthony Zettel announced his retirement from the NFL on Thursday, bringing a close to his four-year career as NFL camps have opened up around the league.

Zettel announced his retirement from professional football with a statement shared on his Instagram account.

“I believe passion and energy is an essential part of being a leader and elite athlete,” Zettel said in his statement. “I have always said that when you lose those components, it is time to find something different that motivates and inspires you. Today I share bittersweet news that after much deliberation and reflection, I have decided to walk away from the sport that has given me so much over the years.”

Zettel went on to say the San Francisco 49ers recently asked him to return to the team for camp, which he did. But after a week in camp, Zettel realized he no longer wanted to go through the grind that life in the NFL requires.

Zettel was a first-team All-Big Ten player for Penn State in 2014 when he recorded 17 tackles for a loss with eight sacks. He went on to be a sixth-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions in the NFL draft in 2016. After three seasons with the Lions, Zettel was released by the Lions and he skipped to multiple stops around the league the following three-plus years with the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints and the 49ers (twice).

We will watch to see what comes next for Zettel and hope he enjoyed his retirement from playing football.

Ex-Lions DE Anthony Zettel has retired from the NFL

Zettel retired from the 49ers but his 2017 season will always be remembered in Detroit

Anthony Zettel was once the feel-good story of the Detroit Lions defense. The high-energy defensive end has decided to hang up his cleats and retired from the NFL.

Zettel was a sixth-round pick by the Lions out of Penn State in the 2016 NFL draft. He quickly proved he belonged in Detroit. After a capable rookie season, Zettel exploded in his second year with the Lions. Zettel started all 16 games for Detroit in 2017 and bagged 6.5 sacks and 11 total tackles-for-loss.

His fan-friendly tenure in Detroit ended in the 2018 preseason when he was unpopularly waived by new head coach Matt Patricia. Zettel never really matched that 2017 level, bouncing between four different teams, most recently the 49ers (for the second time). He recorded just seven tackles and zero sacks in the last three seasons.

He decided that he just didn’t have the love for the game anymore. From Zettel’s Instagram page on Thursday:

Thanks for the memories and enjoy the post-football career, Anthony!

Saints practice squad adds two free agents after tryouts

The New Orleans Saints practice squad added free agents DE Anthony Zettel, DB Grant Haley after tryouts before their Las Vegas Raiders game.

[jwplayer DzituAxG-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints brought a pair of free agents in for tryouts earlier this week, and Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports that they have each been signed to the Saints practice squad. Veteran defensive lineman Anthony Zettel and defensive back Grant Haley were listed on the daily NFL wire as visiting with the Saints on a tryout basis on Sept. 17. Now they’ll be wearing black and gold.

Zettel, 28, is listed at 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds. He’s appeared in 53 games in the NFL with the several different teams, though he hasn’t started since the 2017 season (notching 6.5 sacks and 43 combined tackles in 16 starts with the Detroit Lions). The former Penn State star most recently played in four games with the San Francisco 49ers, including three playoff games and Super Bowl LIV.

Haley, 24, is listed at 5-foot-9 and 190 pounds. Another Penn State alum, he was coached by Saints special teams assistant Phil Galiano in Happy Valley before joining the New York Giants in 2018. Haley appeared in 25 games over the last two years (starting a dozen times), and was credited with 76 combined tackles (65 solo, 7 tackles for loss), but just two passes defensed.

New Orleans had just one spot open on their practice squad (linebacker Anthony Chickillo left for an opportunity with the Denver Broncos), so expect a corresponding move to be reported soon. Underhill added that practice squad cornerback Kemon Hall was not spotted at the team facility on Saturday, so that might be a clue. But we won’t know for certain until the daily transactions wire is updated, so stay tuned.

Minnesota Vikings announce four roster cuts

The Minnesota Vikings announced a wave of cuts Wednesday with the 2020 NFL season around the corner.

Minnesota has to trim its roster down to 53 players by Saturday at 3 p.m C.T. The Vikings announced four cuts on Wednesday which will help them do so.

The team announced that it had cut RB Tony Brooks-James, LB Jordan Fehr, DE Stacy Keely and DE Anthony Zettel.

Brooks-James, in his second year in the NFL, was waived and brought back this offseason only to be cut by the Vikings. Fehr and Keely were both rookies.

Zettel was a depth signing that the Vikings made earlier this offseason. He came over after a stint with the 49ers. With the addition of Yannick Ngakoue recently, and the depth Minnesota already has, that makes it hard for any defensive end to make the team.

These won’t be the last of the Vikings roster cuts. It will be interesting to see who makes the depth chart in the future, who ends up on the practice squad and who ends up looking for an opportunity elsewhere.

The team also placed Kenny Willekes on the Reserve/Injured list.

Who have been the last 10 players drafted No. 202 overall

The players range from never playing a down in the NFL to having four or more seasons in the league.

The Arizona Cardinals’ sixth-round pick is No. 202 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. It is the pick they received in the trade with the New England Patriots for tackle Korey Cunningham.

What type of player historically as the 202nd pick netted a team?

Let’s look at the last 10 years.

2019: OT Isaiah Prince, Dolphins

Prince, despite being a late sixth-round pick, appeared in four games for the Dolphins as a rookie and even started twice. However, he isn’t with the Dolphins anymore. He was waived in December and claimed by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Grading each free agency signing from the Vikings so far

See how each free agency signing for the Vikings grades out!

Minnesota had a limited salary cap heading into the offseason, and the team’s activity in free agency has ended up being pretty limited until this point.

But there are some moves the team has made. The Vikings have signed Michael Pierce, Tajae Sharpe, Anthony Zettel and DeMarquis Gates so far.

I think Pierce could have the inside track at a starting defensive tackle position, but other than him, most of those players will end up being reserves, with some possibly getting cut.

Here is the breakdown of each move individually:

As mentioned earlier, Pierce is an addition to the Vikings who could very well go on to be a starter. He’s a big-body, run-stopping defensive tackle, who could possibly replace some of the production from Linval Joseph, who left to reportedly sign with the Chargers.

Grade: B+

If Sharpe and Zettel are starters next season, the Vikings are in trouble

It’s as simple as this: Tajae Sharpe and Anthony Zettel on their own aren’t good enough to replace Stefon Diggs and Everson Griffen.

Minnesota has lost some veteran talent in free agency, and finally, the Vikings have been reportedly replacing some of it.

The team is reportedly signing defensive end Anthony Zettel and wide receiver Tajae Sharpe, two players who fill positional needs for Minnesota.

The Vikings reportedly traded wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who was the team’s leading receiver last season. And defensive end Everson Griffen announced on Instagram that he was not coming back to the team.

It makes sense for Minnesota to go out and find replacements for Diggs and Griffen, but if that means Zettel and Sharpe are both going to try and fill the void that Griffen and Diggs left, then the Vikings might as well say they’re rebuilding.

Zettel is coming off a season where he played in five regular season games, tallying six tackles. Griffen had 41 total tackles at defensive end for the Vikings last season. Griffen had eight sacks and an interception, being a nice complement to pass rusher Danielle Hunter on the other side of the defensive line. Hunter had 14.5 sacks in 2019-20.

Zettel isn’t good enough to replace the production of Griffen, and if he’s a starter on the defensive line next season, opposing offensive lines will be able to focus more attention on Hunter than they did in 2019-20.

However, I think if the Vikings are going to draft a starting defensive end, and Zettel is simply a player the team uses in limited situations, Minnesota has a chance to adequately replace Griffen’s production.

And then there’s Diggs’ potential replacement. Sharpe is a solid option as the third or fourth best wide receiver on a team, but if he’s going to be a heavy-usage wideout who’s paired with Adam Thielen, then the passing game will fall off.

Sharpe has totaled 1,167 career receiving yards in his three active seasons with the Titans. Diggs was the Vikings’ leading receiver with 1,130 yards in 2019-20. Expecting Sharpe to come in and replace Diggs is expecting too much. Similar to the team’s situation with Griffen, the Vikings need to find Diggs’ replacement in the draft, when Sharpe can be a reserve and given limited reps in order for the Vikings to succeed.

The draft is right around the corner and the Vikings have 12 picks in total. Hopefully, some of those picks will be used to address the needs at defensive end and wide receiver, despite the team reportedly signing talent in free agency.

49ers lose another defensive lineman to Colts

The 49ers have now lost DeForest Buckner and Sheldon Day to the Indianapolis Colts.

The 49ers on Wednesday lost their second defensive lineman of the offseason to the Indianapolis Colts. Sheldon Day will join former teammate DeForest Buckner there on a one-year deal according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.

Day spent the last 2-plus seasons in San Francisco after they signed him off waivers from the Jaguars in the middle of the 2017 campaign. He went on to play 37 games for the 49ers with five starts including the postseason. Day started all three playoff games for San Francisco during their Super Bowl run with starter DJ Jones sidelined by an ankle injury.

In his 34 regular season games, Day posted 26 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks and seven quarterback hits.

While he did earn the last handful of starts last season, Day played just 32 percent of the defensive snaps. Replacing him won’t be nearly the task replacing Buckner will be, but it is still a blow to the 49ers’ defensive line depth.

He was the second reserve defensive lineman to depart Wednesday. Anthony Zettel, a late-season addition in 2019 who played in the final regular season game and sparingly in the three postseason games, agreed to a one-year deal with the Vikings, the team announced.
