Every NFL draft pick coached by James Franklin

Zac Stacy, Jordan Matthews, Saquon Barkley, Micah Parsons, and every other NFL draft pick who played for James Franklin.

[autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] got his first head coaching opportunity with Vanderbilt after the 2010 season despite previously being the head coach-in-waiting at Maryland. The Commodores are not necessarily known for producing a tremendous amount of NFL talent, but Vanderbilt managed to send a few players off to the next level by way of the NFL draft under the guidance of Franklin, who has experience as an assistant coach in the NFL.

In the years Franklin was the head coach at Vanderbilt, from 2011 through 2013, Vanderbilt had seven players drafted. And a few more who would go on to be drafted later on out of Vanderbilt were brought into the program initially by Franklin and his staff. The seven players drafted from Vanderbilt from Franklin’s three seasons with the program is the most draft picks from Vanderbilt in a three-year span in school history since 1957-1969 saw 11 players selected by NFL teams, in the days of a draft lasting at least 20 rounds.

Since arriving at Penn State in 2014, Franklin has seen a growing number of his players go on to be drafted by NFL franchises, including an offensive rookie of the year in running back [autotag]Saquon Barkley[/autotag] in 2018 and a defensive rookie of the year in linebacker [autotag]Micah Parsons[/autotag] in 2021.

Here is a look at every player drafted by an NFL team that had James Franklin as a head coach in their last game before being drafted, beginning with Franklin’s time at Vanderbilt.

And once you are done checking out this list, here is a list of every Penn State player drafted in the first round of the NFL draft since Penn State joined the Big Ten.

Every Penn State player in the XFL in 2023

Looking for every Penn State player on an XFL roster in 2023? Here they are.

As the curtain closes on the NFL’s 2022 season with the crowning of a Super Bowl champion, the football calendar moves next to the start of the XFL regular season. The XFL is back under new leadership headlined by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and the latest attempt to inject new life into the XFL brand kicks things off on Saturday, February 18.

When the new XFL season begins, there will be some familiar names for Penn State fans to keep track of. When the league kicks off, there will be five former Nittany Lions scattered across the league’s eight teams.

Former wide receiver [autotag]Saeed Blacknall[/autotag] will not be on one of those rosters despite previously being profiled by the league in an effort to showcase some players leading up to the start of the season. Blacknall was on the roster for the Vegas Vipers, but he did not appear on the team’s official roster shared by the league in an Instagram post a week and a half prior to the first games being played. But the Vipers do have a former Nittany Lion on the roster looking to make an impact this spring.

Here is a summary of where each former Penn State player is in the XFL and where they have been since their final days in a Penn State uniform.

NFL Draft: Adrian Amos looking for some Penn State teammates with Packers

Adrian Amos would love if the Green Bay Packers drafted a Penn State player

The NFL draft is upon us and Penn State is expecting to have a good number of players get some life-changing phone calls during the course of the three-day event. And naturally, a number of former Nittany Lions are looking to see if their NFL teams will be plucking some talent out of Happy Valley to be part of the future.

Among those wondering if a Penn State player will be joining him by way of the draft is [autotag]Adrian Amos[/autotag], with the Green Bay Packers. Amos could use a few more members of the Penn State family joining him in Green Bay. As of now, Amos is one of two Penn State players on the roster. Center [autotag]Michael Menet[/autotag] is also on the roster. Menet was signed by the Packers in January but was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals late in the 2021 NFL draft.

Amos was drafted in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears, but he joined the Packers after the 2018 season.

The Packers have drafted 12 Penn State players since 1949. The most recent Penn State player drafted by the Packers was tight end Andrew Quarless with a fifth-round pick in 2010. The last player before that drafted by the Packers out of Penn State was defensive back Bhawoh Jue in 2001 (third round). With that being the case, the odds would seem to suggests the Packers may not be drafting a Penn State player this weekend, but a handful of players would appear to be some good fits on the Packers roster.

Amos, like the rest of us, will just have to watch and find out who will be joining him in Green Bay.

Every Penn State player on an NFL playoff roster in 2022

Here is every former Penn State player on an NFL playoff team’s roster in 2022

The NFL playoffs are just about set and Penn State will once again be well-represented across the league with hopes of seeing another Nittany Lion or two lay claim to a Super Bowl ring at the end of the season. And in case you forgot, a Penn State player has played in every Super Bowl (except for five since 1967)…

As the NFL playoff picture comes into view, here is a look at what Penn State players are gearing up for the postseason with Super Bowl 56 on the horizon.

The only confirmed playoff teams without a Penn State player on the roster are the Kansas City Chiefs, Cincinnati Bengals, and New England Patriots. There are still a couple of spots in the AFC and NFC playoff picture to lock down, so this will be updated once the final playoff teams are confirmed.

Penn State football 2021 NFL draft player signing tracker

How much are former Penn State players making on their rookie contracts in the NFL in 2021?

Penn State managed to send two players through the first round of the 2021 NFL draft, and one more in the second round. When all was said and done, a total of six Penn State players ended up hearing their names announced as NFL draft picks during the course of the 2021 NFL draft. But now that the draft is in the books, these players are already getting to work with their new NFL teams.

So, what now for these former Nittany Lions like linebacker Micah Parsons and tight end Pat Freiermuth? Signing those first NFL contracts! As is typical, the later-round draft picks are easier and quicker to sign their NFL contracts, as the higher draft picks tend to have a little more negotiating power even if rookie contracts can be relatively standard.

We’ll keep tabs on all of the draft pick contracts to be signed this year by Penn State players who have become NFL rookies in 2021, and we will update this information as needed when more information does become available. The Arizona Cardinals have signed three of their seven 2021 draft picks. The team announced that three Day 3 picks — cornerback Marco Wilson, safety James Wiggins and center Michal Menet.

Each signed a four-year contract.

Wiggins and Menet were the Cardinals’ two seventh-round selections. Wilson was selected in the fourth round.

Here are their bios from the team’s press release:

Wilson (6-0, 191) played 36 games (35 starts) during his career at Florida and had three interceptions, 20 passes defensed and 103 tackles. He started nine games last season for the Gators and had 33 tackles, four passes defensed and a fumble recovery while helping Florida to an appearance in the SEC Championship game. Wilson started 11 games as a true freshman in 2017 and had a team-high 10 passes defensed, becoming one of just four players in program history to start at cornerback as a freshman in a season-opener. A Fort Lauderdale, FL native, Wilson set career-highs in 2019 with 36 tackles and three interceptions after missing the 2018 season with a knee injury.

Wiggins (5-11, 209) was a second-team All-American, semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award and a first-team All-AAC selection in 2020 after collecting 32 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and one sack in nine games for Cincinnati. He returned to the field last season after missing all of the 2019 season with a knee injury. A Miami, FL native, Wiggins was a second-team All-AAC selection in 2018 after setting career-highs in tackles (54), interceptions (four) and passes defensed (nine). He finished his collegiate career with 87 tackles (61 solo), five interceptions, two forced fumbles, 16 passes defensed and one sack in 32 games (22 starts) with the Bearcats.

Menet (MEN-et) (6-4, 301) was a three-year starter at center and two-time team captain at Penn State who finished his college career by starting in each of the final 34 games he appeared in. As a senior in 2020, Menet was a third-team All-Big Ten selection after starting nine games at center, helping the Nittany Lions finish second in the Big Ten in total offense (430.3 ypg). A Birdsboro, PA native, Menet received honorable mention all-conference honors in 2019 and won the Dick Maginnis Memorial Award at the team’s most outstanding offensive lineman following that season. He finished his career at Penn State by playing in 46 games (34 starts).

With these three signed, four draft picks remain unsigned — first-round pick Zaven Collins, second-round pick Rondale Moore and sixth-round picks Tay Gowan and Victor Dimukeje.

Penn State offensive linemen Michael Menet and Will Fries go back-to-back in NFL draft

Penn State offensive linemen Will Fries and Michael Menet spent plenty of time side by side on the field, so their draft picks were fitting.

Perhaps it is only fitting that Penn State offensive linemen Michael Menet and Will Fries go back-to-back in the seventh round of the NFL draft. After so many games played together during their time in Happy Valley, Menet and Fries went with consecutive picks late in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL draft.

Menet was chosen with the 20th pick of the seventh round by the Arizona Cardinals, one pick after defensive end Shaka Toney was selected by the Washington Football Team. Immediately after the pick of Menet came through, the Indianapolis Colts made it three consecutive Penn State players with the selection of offensive guard Fries.

Menet and Fries are each heading to good spots, even if they will have to compete for playing time. Menet heads to Arizona with an offense that should be electrifying with the addition of Purdue wide receiver Rondale Moore earlier in the draft. Fries could potentially be an anchor on the Colts offensive line protecting new franchise quarterback Carson Wentz, who was acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason.

The mini-run of Penn State players brought Penn State’s 2021 NFL draft total to six in the blink of an eye.

Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons was drafted with the No. 12 overall pick by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round. Defensive end Jayson Oweh was selected by the Baltimore Ravens toward the end of the first round with pick No. 31. Tight end Pat Freiermuth was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 23rd pick in the second round.

Penn State’s NFL draft history through the years

With plenty of Penn State talent, we take a look at the history of players that get their name called on draft night.

The 2021 NFL Draft is slated to kick off around 8 PM ET on Thursday night. Football fans are getting excited (and nervous) to see how their favorite teams’ front offices decide which players they want to develop into future stars.

This year, Penn State has a handful of players that should get their name called over the next several days. Top draft prospects Micah Parsons will hear his name on Thursday night pending any chaos that unfolds. Jayson Oweh has been mocked in the first round, but he could fall down to the top half of the second round along with tight end Pat Freiermuth.

Shaka Toney, Lamont Wade, Will Fries and Michael Menet fill out the rest of the 2021 draft prospects for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State football has had 361 drafted players over the years, which is tied for third-most in the Big Ten (behind Michigan and Ohio State) and sixth-most all-time.

In the 2020 NFL Draft, Penn State had five players drafted. Yetur Gross-Matos (Panthers), KJ Hamler (Broncos), John Reid (Texans), Cam Brown (Giants), and Robert Windsor (Colts).

The 1987 NFL Draft was the best year for Penn State football. After coming off a National Championship win over the Miami Hurricanes, 13 players were drafted. LB Shane Conlan was drafted 8th overall to the Buffalo Bills and RB D.J. Dozier was selected 14th overall to the Minnesota Vikings.

Since 2006, the Nittany Lions have had at least one player drafted for 15 straight years. 62 players during that 15-year span that sported the blue and white had their name called.

Make sure to tune in to the 2021 NFL Draft to see which Penn State players get to be a part of the rich history of NFL players to come out of Happy Valley.
