DB Sherrick McManis confirms he will not return to the Bears

Sherrick McManis, who has been with the Bears since 2011, confirmed he won’t be returning to the team in 2021.

For the first time since the 2011 season, defensive back and special teams ace Sherrick McManis will not be on the Chicago Bears roster when they open their season in September.

McManis, who is currently a free agent, confirmed his days in Chicago were numbered in a tweet to former Bears guard Kyle Long after Long shared an appreciation post for his former teammate.

“I’ll miss my teammates, fans, staff and most coaches,” McManis wrote to Long. “The ones who valued what I brought to Chicago. It’s been real, Chicago. Love.”

For many years, McManis was best known for being the longest-tenured Bear. He was drafted by the Houston Texans in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL draft and was traded to Chicago just prior to the 2012 season. He spent nine seasons in the navy and orange, contributing primarily on special teams and even becoming a team captain.

He called himself “a utility belt,” as he was thrust into action on defense due to injuries over the years, while mainly playing a key role in punt and kickoff situations.

McManis totaled 136 tackles, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries in his nine years as a Bear. He also played under four head coaches and was the last connection to the Lovie Smith era, coming in during his final year. The 33-year old also played for Marc Trestman, John Fox, and Matt Nagy.

With McManis moving on, punter Pat O’Donnell now holds the title for the team’s most tenured player. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL draft.

Bears injury report: Khalil Mack, Eddie Jackson, Allen Robinson questionable, Cody Whitehair ruled out vs. Saints

The Bears released their final injury report ahead of Sunday’s game against the Saints, which featured designations for some key starters.

The Chicago Bears released their final injury report of the week ahead of Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints, which featured official designations for some key starters.

The Bears have officially ruled out center Cody Whitehair, who suffered a calf injury in Week 7. Undrafted free agent Sam Mustipher will get the nod at center when the Bears welcome the Saints in Week 8.

As for some of the Bears’ other big-name stars, outside linebacker Khalil Mack (ankle), safety Eddie Jackson (knee), receiver Allen Robinson (concussion), receiver Cordarrelle Patterson (quad) and safety Sherrick McManis (hamstring) are all listed as questionable against the Saints.

While the Bears have typically been the beneficiaries of some luck with injuries, they’re the ones that find themselves without and possibly without some of their biggest contributors.

Robinson suffered a concussion in the fourth quarter against the Los Angeles Rams, and he’s been in concussion protocol all week. It’s unknown whether he’ll be good to go on Sunday, but the Bears would turn to youngsters Darnell Mooney and Anthony Miller in his absence.

On defense, the Bears hope to have two of their most important playmakers in Mack and Jackson on the field against a high-powered Saints offense. Jackson was limited for most of the week but limited on Friday, so there’s a good chance he’ll suit up. After not practicing Wednesday and Thursday, Mack returned to practice on Friday in a limited capacity. If Mack is good to go, he’ll be on the field for the Bears on Sunday.

Bears injury report: Khalil Mack, Allen Robinson, Cody Whitehair DNP again Thursday

For the second straight practice, the Bears were without four key starters including Khalil Mack, Allen Robinson and Cody Whitehair.

The Chicago Bears have released their second injury report ahead of Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints, and Thursday’s report reads about the same as Wednesday’s. And that’s not good news for this Bears team.

For the second straight practice, the Bears were without four key starters. Outside linebacker Khalil Mack, receiver Allen Robinson, Center Cody Whitehair and receiver Cordarrelle Patterson all did not practice Thursday.

Mack suffered an ankle injury in Monday night’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams, but he played through it. Now, he appears to be taking it easy on a short week. But his status for Sunday’s game is certainly up in the air, as is true for the others on the injury report.

Robinson remains in the concussion protocol after hitting his head on the turf in the fourth quarter against the Rams, and it’s likely Chicago will be without their best offensive player against a team making a push for the postseason.

Whitehair exited Monday’s game with a calf injury, which head coach Matt Nagy said wasn’t expected to be long-term. But it’s possible the Bears will be down two starting offensive linemen against a Saints pass rush that’s looking to eat, which means it could be a long day for quarterback Nick Foles.

With Patterson not practicing for the second straight day, it’s looking more and more likely that we’ll see running back Lamar Miller promoted to the active roster to back-up David Montgomery.

Rookie tight end Cole Kmet returned to practice on Thursday as he’s dealing with a sore back. Safety Eddie Jackson remained limited in practice after suffering a knee injury that gave everyone quite a scare on Monday night. Safety and special teams ace Sherrick McManis practiced for the second straight day in a limited capacity, which means his status for Sunday is encouraging.
