Former Penn State player John Reid waived by Minnesota Vikings

With NFL training camps about to open, this former Penn State star was just waived by his NFL team.

With the start of NFL training camps almost here, NFL teams around the league are making some final roster changes before welcoming players to the summer grind. While most of the focus has been centered on the contract situation of former Penn State running back Saquon Barkley, who failed to reach a contract agreement with the New York Giants earlier this week, there is another former Nittany Lion with a bit of an uncertain future.

John Reid was waived by the Minnesota Vikings this week as the NFC North franchise trimmed its roster.

Reid was picked up by the Vikings earlier this year with the Vikings signing Reid off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons. Since being drafted by the Houston Texans in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft, Reid has been with five different teams (he was actually with the Falcons twice in 2022), and now he could be looking for a sixth.

Reid has 30 career tackles in the NFL and three pass deflections. At Penn State, Reid earned ESPN.com’s Big Ten All-Freshman team honors and was a three-time honorable mention for the All-Big Ten team.

The Minnesota Vikings made a roster move ahead of training camp next by waiving cornerback John Reid on Wednesday. The Vikings claimed the fourth-year cornerback off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons back on May 4th.

Reid was on his fifth team since being a fourth-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2020 out of Penn State. He was traded after the 2020 season to the Seattle Seahawks for a seventh-round pick.

In his career, Reid has played in 27 games with four starts and has 30 tackles and three passes defended.

The move by the Vikings opens up a roster spot ahead of training camp. They currently have 89 players on the roster with

Former Penn State safety John Reid signs with new NFL team

Former Penn State safety John Reid wasn’t unemployed in the NFL for long before signing his latest contract.

Former Penn State safety John Reid didn’t stay on the NFL’s unemployment list for very long. Shortly after Reid was waived by the Atlanta Falcons amid a flurry of post-draft roster moves, Reid was picked up and signed by the Minnesota Vikings.

Reid was cut from the roster of the Falcons last Wednesday and was picked up by the Vikings 24 hours later. Reid has been with a few teams since leaving Penn State. The Vikings will be the fifth different NFL team he has been employed by in his professional career.

Reid was a fourth-round draft pick of the Houston Texans in the 2020 NFL draft, but he lasted just one season with the organization before being traded to the Seattle Seahawks prior to the 2021 season. The Seahawks waived him before the start of the season but signed him to the practice squad before moving him to the 53-man roster for the start of the 2021 NFL season. Seattle released Reid in October 2022.

Reid joined the Falcons the following month on the practice squad and was signed by the Tennessee Titans off the Atlanta practice squad in December 2022. His time with the Titans was short as he was waived by the franchise later that same month. He returned to Atlanta to be on the practice squad roster in January of this year and signed a reserve/future contract with the team.

Vikings claim cornerback John Reid off waivers

The Minnesota Vikings continued to add to their cornerback room by claiming cornerback John Reid from the Atlanta Falcons.

After adding two cornerbacks in the NFL draft last week, the Minnesota Vikings weren’t done adding to the room. According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Vikings claimed former Atlanta Falcons cornerback John Reid off waivers.

All offseason, questions have swirled regarding the Vikings’ cornerback room depth. They signed Byron Murphy Jr and Joejuan Williams in free agency and drafted Mekhi Blackmon and Jay Ward to bolster the cornerback room, pairing them with second-year players Andrew Booth and Akayleb Evans. Now they will add Reid to this room.

Reid has been in the NFL for three years and has had stints with Houston, Seattle, and Tennessee, starting four games during that time period. He had 30 tackles and three passes defended.

The team likely brought in Reid as a training camp body. However, considering what was witnessed with Duke Shelly last season, there is a possibility Reid will play meaningful snaps for the team.

Every NFL draft pick coached by James Franklin

Zac Stacy, Jordan Matthews, Saquon Barkley, Micah Parsons, and every other NFL draft pick who played for James Franklin.

[autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] got his first head coaching opportunity with Vanderbilt after the 2010 season despite previously being the head coach-in-waiting at Maryland. The Commodores are not necessarily known for producing a tremendous amount of NFL talent, but Vanderbilt managed to send a few players off to the next level by way of the NFL draft under the guidance of Franklin, who has experience as an assistant coach in the NFL.

In the years Franklin was the head coach at Vanderbilt, from 2011 through 2013, Vanderbilt had seven players drafted. And a few more who would go on to be drafted later on out of Vanderbilt were brought into the program initially by Franklin and his staff. The seven players drafted from Vanderbilt from Franklin’s three seasons with the program is the most draft picks from Vanderbilt in a three-year span in school history since 1957-1969 saw 11 players selected by NFL teams, in the days of a draft lasting at least 20 rounds.

Since arriving at Penn State in 2014, Franklin has seen a growing number of his players go on to be drafted by NFL franchises, including an offensive rookie of the year in running back [autotag]Saquon Barkley[/autotag] in 2018 and a defensive rookie of the year in linebacker [autotag]Micah Parsons[/autotag] in 2021.

Here is a look at every player drafted by an NFL team that had James Franklin as a head coach in their last game before being drafted, beginning with Franklin’s time at Vanderbilt.

And once you are done checking out this list, here is a list of every Penn State player drafted in the first round of the NFL draft since Penn State joined the Big Ten.

Titans waive Sam Okuayinonu, John Reid from active roster

The Titans parted ways with two defenders on Friday.

The day after their Week 17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, the Tennessee Titans parted with a pair of defenders on their 53-man roster.

The team announced it has waived defensive lineman Sam Okuayinonu and cornerback John Reid from the active roster, but no corresponding moves were announced.

A 2022 UDFA signing of the Titans, Okuayinonu has spent time between the Titans’ practice squad and 53-man roster this season. He’s tallied 0.5 sacks and 11 tackles in six games.

Reid was inked to the 53-man roster in early December. He has since played in three games for Tennessee, but 33 of the 38 defensive snaps he played came in Week 15.

The Titans are hoping that one of those vacant spots on the roster will be filled with linebacker David Long, who is eligible to come off of injured reserve this week.

On Friday, head coach Mike Vrabel said he was hopeful Long could return to practice this week. He would offer a big boost ahead of a do-or-die Week 18 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Penn State photo archive: 2017 Rose Bowl vs. USC

A look back at the best images from the 2017 Rose Bowl between Penn State and USC

Penn State took a thrilling path to a Big Ten championship in 2016 with an iconic field goal block against Ohio State and a wild victory over Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship to earn a third trip to the Rose Bowl since joining the Big Ten. And for the second straight time in the Rose Bowl, Penn State would face a high-powered USC team in Pasadena.

Penn State and USC helped to rewrite the record book in the 2017 Rose Bowl with a new game record for combined points, Penn State scoring on three consecutive offensive snaps, and USC quarterback Sam Darnold setting a Rose Bowl record for most touchdown passes, much to the chagrin of the Nittany Lions. Penn State came up on the wrong end of a 52-49 thriller in the Rose Bowl after seeing the offense stalled in the fourth quarter and allowing the Trojans to keep hopes alive. A late interception thrown by Trace McSorley led to a game-winning field goal for the Trojans as time expired.

Despite the loss, the Rose Bowl served up some terrific moments for Penn State, including one of the best runs by [autotag]Saquon Barkley[/autotag]. Here are some of the best photos from the 2017 Rose Bowl as Penn State battled USC.

Titans place CB Elijah Molden on IR among four roster moves

The Titans have placed CB Elijah Molden on IR for the second time this season.

The Tennessee Titans announced a total of four roster moves on Wednesday, one of which included the placement of cornerback Elijah Molden on injured reserve.

Molden, who has been nagged by a groin injury since before the start of the season, has appeared in just two games this year after playing in 16 of 17 contests in 2021.

Normally, a second stint on injured reserve would end a player’s season, but a new rule for 2022 allows Molden to return again. However, he won’t be eligible until Week 18.

In a corresponding move, the Titans signed cornerback John Reid off the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad, a move that was reported on Tuesday.

Reid was a former fourth-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2020 and has played in 24 games (three starts) over two seasons with the Texans and Seattle Seahawks, tallying 25 tackles and three passes defensed.

Now, a look at all four of the moves the Titans made on Wednesday.

Report: Titans signing John Reid off Falcons’ practice squad

The Titans are reportedly adding CB John Reid to their 53-man roster.

Lost in the sauce of all the madness of the Tennessee Titans’ Tuesday afternoon was the reported signing of cornerback John Reid off the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad.

The news comes from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, and the move was one of the first the Titans made in the wake of firing now-former general manager Jon Robinson.

A former fourth-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2020, Reid has played in 24 games (three starts) over two seasons, one with the Texans and one with the Seattle Seahawks. He has not played any snaps during the 2022 campaign, though.

The team has not made the move official, but the Titans did announce that they waived fullback Tory Carter and outside linebacker Sam Okuayinonu, opening up two roster spots.

Along with those moves, the Titans signed kicker Caleb Shudak to the practice squad after waiving him recently, and cut outside linebacker Wyatt Ray and offensive lineman Eric Smith.

The Titans will return to action after an eventful week when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at Nissan Stadium.
