6 Colts on the roster bubble who need strong preseason finale

These six Colts need a strong showing in the preseason finale.

The Indianapolis Colts are set to host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday night for the preseason finale.

While the starters will see the field for roughly the entire first half of the game, this is the final chance for the fringe players on the roster bubble to make their case for a spot on the 53-man roster.

The Colts will have until Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET to cut the roster down to 53 players ahead of the Week 1 opener against the Houston Texans.

Here are six Colts on the roster bubble who need a strong showing in the preseason finale:

7 Colts to watch vs. Lions in preseason Week 2

Here are seven Colts to watch against the Lions in preseason Week 2.

The Indianapolis Colts will host the Detroit Lions on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium as the preseason continues to roll into its second week.

The starting lineups for the Colts aren’t expected to play Saturday with the exception of one or two players, according to head coach Frank Reich. Even with the starters out following two joint practices with the Lions this week, there is plenty to watch.

We already detailed the position battles to keep an eye on during this game.

Now, it’s time to take a look at seven Colts to watch on Saturday:

5 Colts with the most to lose at training camp

These Colts have the most to lose at training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts will begin training camp later this month where the start of a number of position battles with take place in Westfield.

Earlier, we took a look at the players with the most to gain at training camp. Now, it’s time to look at the opposite end of the spectrum. These players with the most to lose are expected to either have a starting role or at least a roster spot.

Losing out during training camp may be different for some. It could simply mean losing a prominent role in the rotation. For others, it could mean getting cut from the roster altogether.

Here’s a quick look at five Colts players with the most to lose at training camp:

Colts re-sign CB Marvell Tell

The Colts re-signed CB Marvell Tell III.

The Indianapolis Colts re-signed cornerback Marvell Tell III, the team announced Monday.

Tell spent the season on the practice squad after failing to make the active roster during training camp and the preseason. The former fifth-round pick was then placed on the practice squad injured reserve list in October, where he remained for the rest of the season.

Tell was a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft by the Colts and while he showed slivers of promise during the final month of his rookie season, he opted out of the 2020 campaign due to COVID-19 concerns.

Tell came back for the 2021 season competing for one of the final spots in the cornerback room but was waived during roster cuts in September.

Considering new defensive coordinator Gus Bradley has a penchant for using cornerbacks with Tell’s traits, this may be a second chance for the former USC Trojan.

The Colts have a solid trio of cornerbacks in Kenny Moore II, Rock Ya-Sin and Isaiah Rodgers while T.J. Carrie and Xavier Rhodes are set to hit free agency.

Colts protect practice squad CB Marvell Tell, S Jordan Lucas in Week 6

The Colts protect practice squad CB Marvell Tell and S Jordan Lucas in Week 6.

The Indianapolis Colts protected practice squad cornerback Marvell Tell and safety Jordan Lucas for the Week 6 matchup against the Houston Texans, per the league’s transaction wire.

The secondary for the Colts has been ravaged by injuries during the course of the early season so it makes sense the team would want to protect some of its assets at cornerback and safety.

Tell, the fifth-round pick from 2019, was released by the Colts during roster cuts following the preseason. He was re-signed to the practice squad before the start of the regular season.

Lucas, a former sixth-round pick with the Miami Dolphins, was signed to the practice squad on Sept. 29 and now could see a role as an elevated player with Ibraheim Campbell landing on the injured reserve with ankle and knee injuries.

Colts sign CB Marvell Tell, TE Tyler Davis to practice squad

Colts sign CB Marvell Tell, TE Tyler Davis to practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed cornerback Marvell Tell III and tight end Tyler Davis to the practice squad and waived linebacker Curtis Bolton and wide receiver Tyler Vaughns as corresponding moves, the team announced Friday.

Tell, a fifth-round pick in 2019 was initially made the 53-man roster but was waived when the Colts made a pair of claims following roster cuts. He cleared waivers, and the team was able to bring him back to the practice squad.

Davis was a sixth-round pick with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2020 NFL draft. He appeared in eight games during his rookie season but didn’t record any stats.

Colts waive CBs Marvell Tell, Andre Chachere

Colts waived CBs Marvell Tell, Andre Chachere on Wednesday.

The Indianapolis Colts waived cornerbacks Marvell Tell III and Andre Chachere, the team announced Wednesday.

These moves come in correspondence with the additions from the waiver wire on Wednesday. After the Colts cut their roster down to 53 players on Tuesday, they made a pair of waiver claims by bringing in cornerbacks Thakarius Keyes (from KC) and Chris Wilcox (from TB).

Tell was a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft. He showed flashes late in his rookie season but wound up opting out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns. He struggled during the preseason and with two more cornerbacks coming in, the Colts part ways with a former draft pick. That said, he could be a candidate for the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Chachere initially made the 53-man roster as a versatile piece in the secondary and like rotational safety behind starters Khari Willis and Julian Blackmon. He had a strong preseason and could be a candidate for the practice squad.

Colts’ Marvell Tell (groin) ruled OUT vs. Panthers

Colts rule CB Marvell Tell (groin) OUT for the rest of the preseason game vs. Panthers

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Marvell Tell III suffered a groin injury during the preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium and has been ruled out for the remainder of the game.

It isn’t clear how severe the injury is for Tell, but the Colts are also down another cornerback in T.J. Carrie who left the game during the first quarter with a knee injury.

Tell opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns. During Tell’s absence, the Colts are likely to lean on Isaiah Rodgers, Andre Chachere and Holton Hill.

Colts CB Marvel Tell intends to return after opting out of 2020

Tell to return after opting out of the 2020 season.

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Marvell Tell intends to return to the team after opting out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19, per Jim Ayello of The Indianapolis Star.

This was to be expected after Tell missed a crucial year of development. A fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft, Tell showed signs of intrigue during his rookie campaign down the stretch but decided to opt out of the 2020 season. He was one of three Colts players to opt out of the season along with linebacker Skai Moore and safety Rolan Milligan.

Tell was drafted as a safety but moved to cornerback during his rookie season. In 13 games (one start) in 2019, Tell recorded five passes defended and 26 tackles (23 solo).

The Colts are pretty thin at cornerback. They got solid seasons out of Xavier Rhodes and T.J. Carrie but they seem to be moving on in free agency. That leaves Tell currently as the third cornerback on the depth chart behind Kenny Moore and Rock Ya-Sin. Isaiah Rodgers is also in the mix to compete for snaps.

The Colts could add a veteran cornerback in free agency and/or draft another young prospect to compete with Tell in the room, but it should be a positive to have another body in the room.

Marvell Tell listed as Colts’ breakout player in 2021

PFF believs Tell could have a big season.

The Indianapolis Colts didn’t get to see any developments from cornerback Marvell Tell, who opted out of the 2020 season due to concerns surrounding COVID-19.

Tell was one of three players to opt-out of the season, along with safety Rolan Milligan and linebacker Skai Moore. After a promising rookie season in 2019, there was hope we would see more from the USC product. But those plans were put on hold.

Now, he faces a big year in 2021. Pro Football Focus has the young cornerback listed as a potential breakout player for next season.

Colts defensive back Marvell Tell III didn’t play in 2020, choosing to opt out of the season due to COVID-19 concerns. But that may have just postponed a breakout season for him. A former college safety, Tell converted to cornerback in the NFL and had a solid rookie campaign, albeit one where he saw just 254 snaps. He had five pass breakups from 34 targets and ended the season with a 67.6 overall PFF grade. Given his inexperience at the position and his physical gifts, an improvement was a pretty reasonable expectation. It still is in 2021.

The Colts have some major questions in the secondary so Tell’s return might be nice to get some depth back. It seems the Colts are letting veteran Xavier Rhodes hit free agency to test his value while it remains up in the air if T.Y. Carrie will be returning.

That leaves the Colts with Rock Ya-Sin and Kenny Moore as the only returning starters from the 2020 season.

Tell had his share of flashes during the 2019 season and even though he opted out of a crucial year of development, he faces a big campaign in 2021.
