Six Boston Celtics alumni ink new deals with G League teams

No longer seen as the land of outcasts it once was but as more of a viable path into — or back into — the NBA, players are also much better compensated for their play.

A number of former Boston Celtics training camp invitees and other alumni officially found new homes for the season in the NBA’s G League on various different ball clubs within it, per HoopsHype’s Alberto De Roa.

No longer seen as the land of outcasts it once was but as more of a viable path into — or back into — the NBA, players are also much better compensated for their play at the G League level than they once were, adding to the attraction while putting themselves in the developmental pipelines of Association ball clubs in ways playing overseas in Europe, China, or Australia can’t match.

Let’s take a look at who went where.

FULL 2022 Boston Celtics Las Vegas Summer League roster announced

On Tuesday, the Celtics announced their full Las Vegas Summer League roster.

As has been the annual tradition (save of course for the height of the pandemic), the Boston Celtics are assembling a Las Vegas Summer League squad to get in some run at the 2022 Sin City exhibition series, and on Tuesday morning, the team announced their full roster for the Nevada friendlies we all love to put far too much stock into.

There were plenty of familiar faces assigned to it we expected to be on the summer league team, a stashed floor general making the trip back stateside for another go at making a roster spot in the NBA, and a few new names to learn more about in the coming days and weeks.

Let’s see who will be this year’s Vegas Summer Celtics.

Jordan Bone to play for Celtics in NBA Summer League

Jordan Bone to play for the Celtics in the NBA Summer League.

Former University of Tennessee basketball player Jordan Bone will play for Boston in the NBA Summer League.

Bone played professionally in Spain last season for Basket Zaragoza.

The NBA’s summer league will take place July 2-17 in three cities: San Francisco, California (July 2-3), Salt Lake City, Utah (July 5-7) and Las Vegas, Nevada (July 7-17).

Bone and the Celtics will only play in Las Vegas, Nevada. He played for the Vols from 2016-19.

Bone was a second round pick by New Orleans in the 2019 NBA draft (No. 57 overall). The former Vol played for Detroit (2019-20) and Orlando (2020-21).

Celtics 2022 Las Vegas Summer League signee Jordan Bone 2020-21 Orlando Magic highlights

Get to know the Sin City Celtics point guard with this highlights collection.

As will likely be the case for most if not all of the names signing on to join the roster of the Boston Celtics‘ 2022 Las Vegas Summer League squad, fans of the team are not especially likely to be familiar with the game of point guard Jordan Bone.

The former Volunteer floor general has shared the court with Celtics forward Grant Williams at Tennessee, but for those among us who were not fans of that particular team nor his previous stints at the NBA level with the Orlando Magic or Detroit Pistons, his game is something of a mystery.

The odds are stacked against Bone making the team, but he does have some experience in the league and his ties within the team can’t hurt.

While we wait for the annual Sin City exhibition series to kick off, check out the clip embedded above to see what Bone did in the league for the Magic in 2020-21.

Celtics sign guard Jordan Bone to play with team’s 2022 Las Vegas Summer League squad

Bone has played two seasons in the league as a two way player.

The full roster for the Boston Celtics 2022 Las Vegas Summer League squad is nearly assembled with word breaking that the team has signed 24-year-old point guard Jordan Bone to a camp deal to play with the team in the annual Sin City exhibition series according to Hoops Rumors’ JD Shaw.

The 6-foot-2 floor general played collegiately for the University of Tennessee alongside Celtics forward Grant Williams and was taken by the New Orleans Pelicans with the 57th overall pick of the 2022 NBA draft. Bone was dealt to the Detroit Pistons before he could play for the Pels, and inked two way deals with Detroit and the Orlando Magic in his first two seasons in the league.

So far, the Tennessee native has played in 24 contests at the NBA level, doing considerably better in 2020-21. Playing for Orlando, Bone averaged 4.0 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game, including his season-high 9-point, 3-board game against the Celtics on Jan. 15, 2022.

As is usually the case for such camp deals, the odds are against Bone making the regular roster. But if he can show an ability to gel with his summer league teammates, a path to a two way deal for him is not out of the question.
