TyTy Washington drops Bruno Caboclo in NBA G League; Twitter explodes

In an NBA G League matchup, fans reacted with astonishment after seeing #Rockets rookie TyTy Washington drop Bruno Caboclo to the floor with an impressive move.

Rockets rookie TyTy Washington, drafted at No. 29 in the 2022 first round out of Kentucky, is beginning his career as the starting point guard for Houston’s G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Vipers. And he’s already making quite an impression.

In Monday’s road game against the Capitanes, Washington dropped Mexico City big man Bruno Caboclo — formerly a member of the Rockets — to the ground with an epic move before drilling a 3-pointer. It reminded many on social media of the legendary crossover performed by James Harden on Clippers guard Wesley Johnson during the former’s 2017-18 MVP season with Houston.

Washington has quite a ways to go to reach those lofty heights, but he is off to a good start in the G League. In Monday’s game (box score), Washington scored 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting (58.8%) and 3-of-8 on 3-pointers (37.5%) while also recording 5 rebounds, 4 assists, no turnovers and leading his team to a road victory.

Here’s a look at Washington’s move against Caboclo, along with how fans reacted across Twitter and social media.

Vipers’ Eron Gordon, Trhae Mitchell face off vs. Rockets alum Bruno Caboclo in Capitanes’ Mexico City home opener

It was an unofficial Rio Grande Valley reunion as Houston’s G League squad traveled to Mexico City’s first-ever home opener south of the border.

The G League now plays games south of the Rio Grande with Mexico City’s Capitanes hosting the Houston Rockets‘ G League affiliate for their first home game since joining the G League. Last season the franchise played in the Dallas-Fort Worth area due to the pandemic.

The contest was something of a reunion for Rockets past and present. Former Houston forward Bruno Caboclo — now signed to Mexico City’s roster — facing Rio Grande Valley Vipers Eron Gordon and Trhae Mitchell.

The Rockets Wire caught up with all three to talk about their experience playing in Mexico, the unique qualities of playing in the high-altitude city, and their impressions about the historic event for our neighbors south of the border.

Traded to the Rockets from the Memphis Grizzlies in 2020, Caboclo found himself waived by Houston less than a year later, spending a season overseas playing for French club Limoges in the LNB Pro-A league and for the Brazilian National Team.

Celtics camp invitee Bruno Caboclo on Boston’s offseason, plans for 2022-23

The Brazilian big man revealed a certain former No. 3 pick was an unreported early participant in the Celtics’ training camp. as well

Many fans of the Boston Celtics were excited by the news of Brazilian forward Bruno Caboclo joining the team in the offseason on a training camp deal, hopeful the Osasco native might make the team as a potential depth option. Ultimately, the team would go in a different direction to solidify their roster for the 2022-23 NBA season, but it might not be the last time you hear Caboclo’s name connected to the Celtics.

Currently playing for the G League’s Mexico City Capitanes, the 6-foot-9 combo forward hopes to leverage a resurgent interest in big men in the league and his positional flexibility to find his way back to the NBA, whether with Boston or some other ball club.

Ahead of his season opener on Nov. 6 with the Capitanes, the Celtics Wire caught up with Caboclo to talk about his time in Boston, what brought him to Mexico, and more.

Six Boston Celtics alumni ink new deals with G League teams

No longer seen as the land of outcasts it once was but as more of a viable path into — or back into — the NBA, players are also much better compensated for their play.

A number of former Boston Celtics training camp invitees and other alumni officially found new homes for the season in the NBA’s G League on various different ball clubs within it, per HoopsHype’s Alberto De Roa.

No longer seen as the land of outcasts it once was but as more of a viable path into — or back into — the NBA, players are also much better compensated for their play at the G League level than they once were, adding to the attraction while putting themselves in the developmental pipelines of Association ball clubs in ways playing overseas in Europe, China, or Australia can’t match.

Let’s take a look at who went where.

Which camp invitees might actually make the Boston Celtics’ 2022-23 roster?

Bruno Caboclo, Noah Vonleh, Justin Jackson, Denzel Valentine, Jake Layman, and Brodric Thomas all might find themselves a part of the Celtics run at an NBA title this season with the right kind of effort in camp.

Which of the six unguaranteed contracts signed by as many prospective additions to the Boston Celtics roster for the 2022-23 regular season will be converted into a deal that will last longer than opening night? The Celtics brought on six players to compete in training camp for up to three regular roster slots (or perhaps a two way if one opens and they are eligible).

Bruno Caboclo, Noah Vonleh, Justin Jackson, Denzel Valentine, Jake Layman, and Brodric Thomas all might find themselves a part of the Celtics run at an NBA title this season with the right kind of effort in camp. Which of them has the best shot of actually making the team?

The host of the CLNS Media “Winning Plays” podcast Brian Robb recently debated this question with guest Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear the conclusions they came to.

Shams: Boston Celtics waive camp invitee forward Bruno Caboclo

It is currently unclear whether the news regarding Timelord’s surgery and looming recuperation is connected to the Celtics moving on from Caboclo.

The Boston Celtics have reportedly waived big man Bruno Caboclo per The Athletic’s Shams Charania. The seven-year veteran had been brought in on a fully nonguaranteed training camp deal to compete for one of several open roster spots to help the Celtics with a lack of frontcourt depth.

That thin frontcourt has been compounded significantly in the last several weeks with the loss of veteran swingman Danilo Gallinari for the regular season to a torn ACL, and a clean-up surgery for big man Robert Williams III that will likely have him out into the start of the 2022-23 season.

Caboclo had been showing an intriguing 3-point shot while playing overseas for Limoges CSP of the French Pro A league, shooting 44.8% from deep 3.5 attempts per game.

It is currently unclear whether the news regarding Timelord’s surgery and looming recuperation is connected to the Celtics moving on from Caboclo.

But, with the importance of finding some depth able to play big minutes for Boston increasing, the team may have set their sights on another option.

All six players at the Boston Celtics training camp on non-guaranteed deals

Expected to be an intense competition due to the fact that the prospects are competing for a real role with the team, Boston has between one and three roster spots they could be invited to fill.

The Boston Celtics appear to have their 2022 training camp roster set, with a total of six players having been invited to join the players the Celtics already have on their roster as regular or two way players.

The team has a need to help fill minutes for its wing, forward, and center roles this season with a dearth of proven players in the frontcourt compounded by an injury to veteran swingman Danilo Gallinari that is likely to keep him out all of this coming season. Expected to be an intense competition due to the fact that the prospects are competing for a real role with the team, Boston has between one and three roster spots they could be invited to fill.

Let’s take a look at the prospects who will take part in the Celtics’ training camp this season on non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 contracts.

Big man Bruno Caboclo’s deal with the Boston Celtics fully unguaranteed, $2.46 million

Caboclo has developed a 3-point shot abroad, shooting a sizzling 44.8% from beyond the arc in his last stop with Limoges CSP of the French LNB Pro-A league.

Per HoopsHype’s Alberto De Roa, recently signed Boston Celtics big man Bruno Caboclo’s deal with the Celtics is a fully unguaranteed contract for one season at $2.46 million. The signing is likely contingent on how Caboclo’s play in training camp impresses the front office alongside several other potential Boston big man candidates vying to fill the role of third center for the Celtics.

Caboclo has developed a 3-point shot abroad, shooting a sizzling 44.8% from beyond the arc in his last stop with Limoges CSP of the French LNB Pro-A league. He has struggled in larger roles at the NBA level in the past, but the former first-round draft pick played the role of third big well while on the Memphis Grizzlies in 2018-19, logging 8.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and a block per game over 23.5 minutes per game.

Something akin to those numbers and the flexibility to stay ready for larger roles on occasion when Al Horford or Robert Williams III takes a night off is what Boston is likely looking for from Caboclo, should he prove up to the challenge.

Report: Boston Celtics sign big man Bruno Caboclo

The journeyman big developed a 3-pointer overseas that might have upped his stock in Boston’s eyes.

The Boston Celtics have reportedly signed unrestricted free agent center Bruno Caboclo per new reporting from Celtics Blog’s Keith Smith. The Brazilian big man is a versatile big able to play down to the 3 but has mostly played the 4 and 5 in recent years. He last played for the São Paulo FC of the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) based in the Brazilian city of the same name after his last stop in the NBA, the Houston Rockets, and between those stops had a stint with Limoges CSP in the French Pro-A league.

With 7 seasons of experience, Caboclo stands at 6-foot-9 heading into the 2022-23 season just shy of his 27th birthday. The Osasco native has struggled to put it together at the NBA level despite having been taken in the first round of the 2014 NBA draft (20th overall), his sole season of significant run coming with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2018-19 that saw him log 8.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and a block per game over 23.5 minutes of floor time per contest.

The Celtics are clearly hopeful Caboclo can produce something like that with a 3-pointer resembling the one he developed with Limoges, which saw him hitting 3.5 per game at a sizzling 44.8% success rate.

At present, no details have yet been revealed about the signing.

Celtics to reportedly use training camp to fill remaining roster spots

Big men Noah Vonleh and Bruno Caboclo will be among that cadre, as will veteran forward Justin Jackson and last season’s two-way wing Brodric Thomas.

With 12 open roster spots for the 2022-23 NBA season, the Boston Celtics reportedly plan to have prospective players compete to for at least some of those spots. Per reporting from The Athletic’s Jay King, big men Noah Vonleh and Bruno Caboclo, who were recently signed to camp deals, will be among that group, as will veteran forward Justin Jackson and last season’s two-way wing Brodric Thomas.

King also noted 2021-22 two-way wing Matt Ryan “now sounds less likely to return to Boston” despite having recovered from the ankle injury he sustained in the 2022 NBA 2K23 Las Vegas Summer League play for the Celtics.

Interestingly, The Athletic reporter also related “the Celtics are said to prefer younger players who have room to grow and will be more likely to embrace a limited role” over signing any of several still free agent veteran big men. King cited the recently signed two-way big man, Mfiondu Kabengele, as one such player.
