NBA Commissioner Adam Silver crashes Celtics broadcast to talk in-season tournament, expansion

Could Boston play a team based south of the border in the near-term future?

The last time the Boston Celtics played, broadcasters Mike Gorman and Brian Scalabrine got a surprise visit from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. In between talk of how that legendary pair might spice up their calls and early impressions of the league’s new in-season tournament, another topic came up that has been in the Association news cycle of late with the league’s NBA Mexico City Game having gone down the week prior.

That topic, NBA expansion, tends to pop up at the start of every season as the league lurches ever closer to adding new teams, and has been picking up speed recently due to one of the two major benchmarks Silver has outlined as needing completion before expansion (a new CBA) having been met as the other, a new media rights deal, remains in process.

And while the general consensus remains that Seattle and Las Vegas are top teams in the mix for new clubs, Canada and Mexico could be in the running as well, per Silver.

Michael Carter-Williams on playing with Rajon Rondo for Bulls

“He was a great veteran presence on our team,” said MCW. “He helped us win a lot of games there.”

The NBA’s 2013-14 Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams might have won that award with the Philadelphia 76ers, but when it comes to who the now-Mexico City Capitanes guard sees as the teams to beat in the East this season, two other ball clubs come to mind. “I like the (Milwaukee) Bucks, I like the (Boston) Celtics,” said Carter-Williams to the Celtics Wire after the Capitanes’ first open practice of the 2023-24 season. “I like those two coming out of the East, to battle to come out of the East.”

Playing in the Mexican Capital’s G League squad to work his way back to the Association, MCW might be partial to the Bucks given he cut his teeth in the league there, but might also like Boston after seeing his former Chicago Bulls teammate helping to coach the Celtics in training camp this fall.

“Rondo was good, I learned a lot from him,” said Carter-Williams. “Just as far as watching film with the knowledge of the game.”

“He was great,” emphasized the Capitanes guard. “He was a great leader. He was a great veteran presence on our team. He helped us win a lot of games there.”

Including a first-round playoff series Boston fans likely would rather forget, with the Celtics going down 0-2 to Rondo’s Bulls with the help of MCW, Jimmy Butler, and Dwyane Wade until Rondo was injured in Game 2.

Indeed he did.

Should the Celtics consider signing Kenneth Faried to their open roster spot?

The Manimal is planning an NBA comeback, and will ‘work his tail off’ to do it; does Boston make sense?

From the way the Boston Celtics have been playing over the first four games of the 2023-24 NBA season, it would be hard to identify an obvious area in need of improvement with the Celtics now the owners of the best record in the East and tied for the best in the league with the Dallas Mavericks at 4-0.

But Boston has another 78 games to play to finish the regular season and at least another 16 after that (and probably a lot more) if they want to win a title. So with their big man depth still a bit thin, adding a third frontcourt player able to not only absorb minutes to keep Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford healthy and spry for the postseason but also able to fill in for them in the playoffs if one or both is unavailable seems the last weak link in the roster left for the front office to address.

There has been no shortage of speculation about how the Celtics might address such an issue, with the latest popular candidate being former Celtics center Daniel Theis, currently languishing on the bench of the Indiana Pacers after a strong showing in the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

OKC Blue acquire Norvel Pelle from Mexico City Capitanes for Zeke Moore

The OKC Blue made a roster change on Friday for a 30-year-old center.

The OKC Blue announced on Friday they had acquired the rights of Norvel Pelle from the Mexico City Capitanes for the rights of Zeke Moore.

The Blue added the 30-year-old center to their roster. Pelle went undrafted in 2014 and has appeared in 40 career games spanning three seasons from 2019 to 2022 for the Philadelphia 76ers, Brooklyn Nets, Sacramento Kings, New York Knicks and Utah Jazz.

In those 40 games, he’s averaged 2.1 points and 2.4 rebounds in 8.4 minutes.

Meanwhile, the Capitanes added the 25-year-old guard to their roster. Moore went undrafted in 2020 and appeared in three G League games for the Blue last season, where he averaged 7.3 points and 1.3 rebounds in 14 minutes.

The Blue’s 2023-24 G League season kicks off on Nov. 10. The full schedule can be viewed here.

Boston Celtics acquire G League returning player rights to point guard DJ Steward

Presumably done so the Celtics can keep Steward in their developmental pipeline should the parent club elect to go in another direction or keep that third two way slot open, the Chicago native caught the attention of many during the NBA’s 2023 Las Vegas Summer League.

Earlier this summer, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported the Boston Celtics had signed former Duke point guard DJ Steward to a camp deal. He is expected to compete for the Celtics’ third and final two-way roster spot.

Now, per a press release circulated by the involved teams, Steward’s returning player rights have been transferred to the Celtics as part of a three-team G League trade involving the Mexico City Capitanes, the Stockton Kings and the Maine Celtics.

The move was presumably done so the Celtics can keep Steward in their developmental pipeline should the parent club elect to go in another direction or keep that third two-way slot open. The Chicago native caught the attention of many during the NBA’s 2023 Las Vegas Summer League with his impressive playmaking skills.

The 6-foot-1 floor general has played 58 games over two seasons with Stockton, averaging 13.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.2 assists and just under a steal per game while shooting 36.8% from deep.

Would Kasier Gates or Kenneth Faried make sense as Boston Celtics signings?

If Boston turns to the G League for end-of-bench options, these two stand out.

What potential hidden gems could the Boston Celtics sign in free agency? Are there players who might have played in the G League last season and could provide valuable contributions to the team on one of the club’s two open roster spots?

Forward Kaiser Gates is known for his 3-point shooting in the G League and has history with the Celtics organization as a previous training camp invitee. Big man Kenneth Faried started a comeback attempt in Mexico City’s Capitanes at the G League level and could be a solid option for the Celtics to consider.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast dived into potential G League options for Boston’s open roster spots.

Check out the clip embedded above to hear their thoughts on what the Celtics should do with them.
