Roxbury native AJ Reeves excited for shot with Maine Celtics

The 6-foot-6 wing signed a deal with Boston’s G League affiliate this summer.

AJ Reeves did not make the Boston Celtics regular-season roster for the 2022-23 NBA season after playing with the team’s Las Vegas Summer League squad.

Instead, Reeves signed an Exhibit-10 deal to join the Maine Celtics, Boston’s Portland-based G League affiliate. For the Roxbury native, the name on the front of the jersey is what gives him a lift on the court, according to the Providence College alumnus in a recent article by Boston.com’s Khari Thompson.

“It’s really surreal,” offered the Swampscott High School graduate of being signed to the hometown NBA team — even if only their developmental affiliate.

“Any time I have the chance to put the word Celtics across my chest, I feel like I have the whole city behind me whether it’s in Maine or in Boston. Everybody wants to see the local guy win,” he explained.

Report: After Samanic, Valentine, Reeves and Kissoonnlal Maine Celtics offers, Boston plans to add another player to G League affiliate

Having also signed several players to Exhibit-10 deals, the Celtics reportedly also plan to add another player to Maine’s roster.

The Boston Celtics have been making moves to finalize their regular-season roster ahead of the opener on Oct. 18 against the Philadelphia 76ers. Per reporting from the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, they have also been lining up players for their G League affiliate, the Maine Celtics, for the 2022-23 campaign.

Per Himmelsbach, both Luka Samanic and Denzel Valentine are set to join the team’s Portland-based G League affiliate with a $50,000 bonus awaiting them if they spend at least 60 days with the Maine Celtics. Recently waived wing Brodric Thomas will not join the Maine Celtics; Boston does not hold his draft rights.

Having also added both Roxbury native AJ Reeves and big man Reggie Kissoonlal to Maine’s roster, the Celtics reportedly also plan to add another player via the Exhibit-10 contract that creates the $50,000 bonus for sticking with the team.

Celtics cut AJ Reeves, sign Reggie Kissoonlal; latter headed to Maine Celtics

Kissoonlal is a recent shift to play as a big man at 6-foot-11; in his time at the college level, he played in the backcourt

The Boston Celtics have been getting their proverbial ducks in a row regarding both their roster with the parent club in Boston as well as that of the Maine Celtics according to recent reports. Per Celtics Blog’s Keith Smith, the team has officially waived Roxbury native AJ Reeves, with the undrafted wing likely headed to the Maine Celtics as an affiliate player, though no concrete reporting has yet confirmed that.

In a similar vein, the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn relates that the Celtics have also signed former Northwestern State wing Reggie Kissoonlal with the intent to send him to the team’s Portland (Maine) based G League affiliate.

Kissoonlal is a recent shift to play as a big man at 6-foot-11; in his time at the college level, he played in the backcourt, averaging 3.3 points and 1.4 rebounds per game at Northwestern State in Florida.

He has since shifted to be a combo big overseas, retaining guard skills with size in his time playing for Danish club Randers Cimbria, where he put up 20 points, 8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, a steal, and 2.8 blocks per game.

Boston Celtics to reportedly waive camp invitee Luka Samanic

The Croatian forward will reportedly play for the Maine Celtics this season.

With the news the Boston Celtics had signed former Providence College player AJ Reeves to a training camp deal came bad news for another player. The team needed to cut someone to make space on the maxed-out 20-man camp roster so Reeves could join.

That unlucky soul was forward Luka Samanic, who is expected to join the (Portland) Maine Celtics for the 2022-23 G League season, per The Athletic’s Jared Weiss. The Croatian forward struggled in his limited minutes playing for Boston, averaging just a point and 2.5 rebounds per game in preseason action with the Celtics in two appearances with the team.

The 6-foot-10 Zagreb native might yet latch on in the NBA with enough experience under his belt to get the game to slow down, given he averaged an impressive 26 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal with the Westchester Knicks last season.

Report: Boston Celtics to sign Roxbury’s AJ Reeves to camp deal

The Boston Celtics are leaning into the local talent pool for their training camp ahead of the 2022-23 NBA season.

The Boston Celtics are leaning into the local talent pool for their training camp ahead of the 2022-23 NBA season, reportedly extending an Exhibit-10 contract to Roxbury’s own AJ Reeves according to SNY’s Adam Zagoria. A 6-foot-6 shooting guard out of Providence College who went unselected in the 2022 NBA draft, Reeves has struggled with his shot at the college level despite being assessed as a four-star recruiting going into college.

His 3-point shot (35.4%), oddly, was a better bet than his overall efficiency from the field (36.1%) in his senior season with the Friars, and the former Gatorade Massachusetts player of the year has proven to be a solid defender with size.

Reeves will only have one exhibition game with the Celtics against the Toronto Raptors in Montreal on Friday and the practices left before Boston’s season opener to convince the team to sign him.

It is much more likely the Brimmer and May graduate ends up playing with the Maine Celtics in Portland this season instead. With the Celtics having waived forward Luka Samanic earlier in the day, Boston will be at a full 20 players for their camp roster as a result.

He previously played for Boston in this year’s Las Vegas Summer League, where he put up 4.5 points and 1.5 boards per game in just over 10 minutes per game.

Roxbury’s AJ Reeves excited beyond words to play for hometown Boston Celtics in Las Vegas Summer League

‘The emotion just flooded me’ said the Providence product when he learned Boston had a spot for him.

Roxbury native AJ Reeves did not stray too far from home when he went to college, playing for the nearby Providence College Friars at the NCAA level before going unselected in the 2022 NBA draft. The 6-foot-6 guard might be staying even closer to home if he makes the leap to the NBA via a Las Vegas Summer League opportunity extended to him after a solid pre-draft workout with his hometown Boston Celtics.

After working out with Boston before the draft in an experience he described to the Boston Globe’s Trevor Hass as “almost surreal,” Reeves learned the Celtics wanted him on their Sin City squad this summer.

“The emotion just flooded me,” said the Providence product on hearing the news. “I’m still excited right now. I can’t even speak.”

The 2017-18 Gatorade Player of the Year in Massachusetts has an uphill battle to make Boston’s roster even as a two way player, but his size and skill set may make the difference with a solid performance in Nevada next week.

Get to know the local talent a little better with the rest of Hass’ short interview.

FULL 2022 Boston Celtics Las Vegas Summer League roster announced

On Tuesday, the Celtics announced their full Las Vegas Summer League roster.

As has been the annual tradition (save of course for the height of the pandemic), the Boston Celtics are assembling a Las Vegas Summer League squad to get in some run at the 2022 Sin City exhibition series, and on Tuesday morning, the team announced their full roster for the Nevada friendlies we all love to put far too much stock into.

There were plenty of familiar faces assigned to it we expected to be on the summer league team, a stashed floor general making the trip back stateside for another go at making a roster spot in the NBA, and a few new names to learn more about in the coming days and weeks.

Let’s see who will be this year’s Vegas Summer Celtics.

Celtics reportedly signing undrafted Providence guard AJ Reeves to Las Vegas Summer League roster

Reeves is a native of Roxbury.

The Boston Celtics are signing Roxbury, Massachusetts native AJ Reeves to play with their Las Vegas Summer League squad this month, according to Hoops Rumor’s JD Shaw. The undrafted Providence point guard will play for the Celticsi Sin City team with a thinner than anticipated backcourt rotation after stashed Israeli floor general Yam Madar elected to sit out summer league to focus on European opportunities in the short term and third-year wing Aaron Nesmith was dealt to the Indiana Pacers.

Reeves is a capable guard with some size who put up 9.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game last season with the Friars while shooting 37.3% from beyond the arc.

His efficiency overall is still a bit of a concern at a career 37.8% with the Friars (a large part of why he likely went undrafted).

But, Reeves will have a chance to make the case for Boston or some other team using a two way deal on him while helping to shore up the Celtics’ summer league depth next week.
