Cory Bonini’s 2021 NFL mock draft 3.0

Cory Bonini’s updated NFL mock draft is now available!

Here’s my third 2021 NFL mock draft. I tend not to project trades, but there was one deal that makes too much sense for both parties.

We are publishing more mock drafts than ever before this year, so be sure to check back with our 2021 NFL Draft Central page to keep track of all of our offerings.

2021 NFL Mock Draft notables

  • I project a trade between the Chicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons, sending a package of draft picks from the Windy City, including Chicago’s No. 18 pick to the Falcons for No. 4. Reports say there had been separation between the new head coach and general manager in Atlanta as to what should be done with the pick, until they came to a recent agreement. Atlanta is in a tough spot at No. 4 in terms of balancing current needs with available players that aren’t a reach. I can see this team staying put and drafting a cornerback, wide receiver or quarterback. The relationship between general managers Ryan Pace and Atlanta’s Terry Fontenot could help facilitate this trade.

[lawrence-related id=457182]

  • Several situations that appear to be obvious directions for teams to turn don’t necessarily compute for me. I’m not saying New Orleans, New England and/or Washington won’t add a quarterback in Round 1, but I’m not seeing the scenarios playing out favorably.

How Washington EDGE Joe Tryon transformed his frame

Washington edge defender Joe Tryon has been focused on improving his diet, and the results have been impressive

We all know that when you’re in college, you eat what you can afford. That means plenty of fast food, and it’s no different for Washington edge defender prospect Joe Tryon.

But now that he’s preparing to be one of the first pass rushers selected in the 2021 NFL draft, Tryon has been focusing on improving what he puts into his body. In the process, he’s transformed his tackling machine on the outside, as well.

Watch the video above to see Tryon talk about his predraft training process (via Pro Football Focus).

2021 NFL Draft: Daniel Jeremiah mocks Joe Tryon to Bills

Buffalo Bills select Washington DE Joe Tryon in Daniel Jeremiah’s mock draft.

Daniel Jeremiah, regarded as one of the top NFL Draft analysts around, sees the Buffalo Bills addressing the edge at the upcoming 2021 event.

Earlier this week, Jeremiah released his third mock draft of the offseason and Joe Tryon is the selection. Not exactly a widely-known product, there’s a reason for that.

Like in the NFL in 2020, college players had the option to opt out of playing due to COVID-19. Tryon, a Washington product, was one of those.

Because of that, could the Bills land a sleeper at No. 30 overall?

First, here’s Jeremiah’s breakdown:

I could see Buffalo addressing the linebacker position, but finding another edge rusher to complement Jerry Hughes is a bigger priority.

The linebacker position is a questionable thought considering the Bills have long locked up Matt Milano and the team runs a nickel-based defense. That means there’s two linebackers on the field most teams in Sean McDermott’s scheme, and we also have Tremaine Edmunds in Buffalo.

We’re not entirely sure where a third would fit, unless it was a versatile box-safety or nickel defender type.

But in the end, edge is a much more realistic pick. Not only Hughes, but Mario Addison isn’t getting any younger, either. If Buffalo drafts a defensive end to add to their rotation, a player such as Tryon could be groomed to be long-term answer at the position along with AJ Epenesa.

According to The Draft Network, Tryon is a player that is a versatile guy that can play in a 3-4 defense or 4-3 one like the Bills run.

Browns check out defensive prospects at Washington’s pro day

Browns check out defensive prospects including DT Levi Onwuzurike at Washington’s pro day

The Cleveland Browns were among the NFL teams in attendance for the Washington Huskies pro day workout on Tuesday. There are a couple of defensive prospects from Washington who make a lot of sense for the Browns to target in the 2021 NFL draft, too.

If the team is looking to bolster the defensive line, Levi Onwuzurike makes sense. Onwuzurike is one of the better interior pass rushing prospects in the class. He opted out in 2020 after an impressive junior season where he was the top-graded pass rusher amongst all college DTs by Pro Football Focus. Onwuzurike’s projections are all over the draft map, from the late first round through the end of the third. He showed enough athleticism during his Washington career and at the Senior Bowl in January to play further outside too, a la Sheldon Richardson.

Cornerback Elijah Molden is generally projected on Day 2 as one of the best slot CB prospects. Like new Browns corner Troy Hill, Molden looks ideally built to play inside but has shown he can handle the physicality of playing outside against bigger receivers. Another Huskies CB, Keith Taylor, also merits some Browns interest later in the draft.

Joe Tryon is also worthy of a look as a pass-rushing EDGE option on Day 2. He had eight sacks as a twitchy, stand-up pass rusher in 2019 before opting out of the 2020 campaign.

Morning mock draft: Bills take pass rusher that opted out

Buffalo Bills select Washington DE Joe Tryon in MMQB’s Albert Breer’s mock draft.

In a twist, could the ongoing pandemic help the Bills get a sleeper prospect? That’s a bit of the scenario recently laid out by one NFL insider.

MMQB’s Albert Breer produced his first mock of the 2021 NFL Draft season and in it, Joe Tryon is the pick for the Bills at No. 30 overall in Round 1. Tryon isn’t a guy anyone heard much about in 2020.

That’s because he opted out due to the pandemic, and Breer references that Buffalo might land a sneaky good pick because of that. Here’s the selection’s breakdown:

No. 30 – DE Joe Tyron, Washington

Tryon could wind up being an outstanding value pick. He was a highly productive true sophomore in 2019 that opted out of the 2020 season. And the Bills really could use another edge rusher to give their defensive front some more juice.

While an interesting pick because of his opt out, The Draft Network adds another level of intrigue on Tryon. The outlet pegged him as a guy suited better for a 3-4 defensive front as a linebacker. Buffalo plays with four down linemen on defense in Sean McDermott’s scheme.

However, there is some news that McDermott would like from TDN. Part of their breakdown:

He has true schematic versatility in that he can be an outside LB in an odd front scheme or can gain weight and be a 4-3 defensive end.

That’s exactly where the Bills would put Tryon in their scheme. It’s also truly their biggest need left this offseason for Buffalo

Tryon should be a name to keep in mind as the upcoming draft inches closer because the Bills have admitted to trying to sign JJ Watt, and more recently, a report said Buffalo wanted to sign pass rusher Jarron Reed as well. Both free agents opted to sign elsewhere, so the upcoming draft might be the last chance for the Bills to add to their pass rush before 2021.
