Louisiana Tech’s Brevin Randle stomps head of UTEP’s Steven Hubbard

Louisiana Tech LB Brevin Randle with an awful stomp

This could be cause for suspension … a long one.

In Friday’s game between Louisiana Tech and UTEP — won by the Bulldogs, 24-10 — Tech linebacker Brevin Randle stomped on the head of UTEP offensive lineman after a play.

Update: Randle has been suspended indefinitely.

Per ElPasotimes.com:

It happened on a pileup as players were chasing a fumble from Miner quarterback Jake McNamara. Randle got up off the ground before Hubbard, partly because he pushed him down by his head as leverage, then kicked him in the head/neck area. Hubbard visibly writhed in pain after the play.

It was caught on camera, but an official on the spot was looking at the pile where the ball was and didn’t see the stomp. UTEP coach Dana Dimel may have, but his screams for justice went unanswered and Louisiana Tech came away with the ball. He also might have been asking for a targeting call, which likewise wasn’t called.

“The referee, who I really admire, came over at halftime and very gentlemanly said that he missed it,” Dimel said. “That’s part of the game. He (the official) was a class act, I really appreciated that.”

Packers star Aaron Jones, who played college ball at UTEP, was not happy.

Brings back bad memories of Albert Haynesworth and Andre Gurode.

Week 0 Scouting Notebook: A look at potential Chargers prospects in 2024 NFL draft

Here are a handful of prospects for Los Angeles Chargers fans to watch in Week 0.

We want to welcome back The Scouting Notebook.

The Scouting Notebook will feature prospects to keep an eye on when most of the college games occur. While some may think it’s too early to start talking about the 2024 NFL draft, there’s never a bad time to talk about the future of the Chargers.

That said, here are the players to watch for in Week 0.

WATCH: FOX broadcasters scoff at Saints-Eagles C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade

FOX broadcasters Joe Davis and Daryl Johnston scoffed at the preseason Saints-Eagles C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade during their Saturday night playoff game:

A couple of former New Orleans Saints players had themselves a game during the first half of the Philadelphia Eagles’ playoff game with the New York Giants on Saturday night. Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson helped create a Daniel Jones interception by rushing the passer into an ill-advised throw off of a blitz, and he later made a couple of clean open-field tackles to force some Giants punts. Gardner-Johnson’s defense pitched a first-half shutout against Jones’ Giants.

It was enough for the FOX Sports broadcasting duo to question how the Eagles got Gardner-Johnson in the first place, reflecting on a preseason trade with the New Orleans Saints late last summer. Contract negotiations broke down between Gardner-Johnson and the Saints and led to some friction, which prompted head coach Dennis Allen to trade him out of town.

“How did the Eagles pull off a trade for Gardner-Johnson? How did the Saints let this guy go?” asked play-by-play announcer Joe Davis. Color analyst Daryl Johnston responded with a befuddled “I have no idea.”

After halftime, FOX Sports sideline reporter Pam Oliver relayed a message  Gardner-Johnson delivered to his teammates in the tunnel before returning to the field, cautioning them to “Don’t let that goose egg fool you.” They quickly forced a New York three-and-out to open the second half.

Gardner-Johnson has had a career year with Philadelphia, tying for the NFL lead with 6 interceptions despite being limited to 12 games due to an abdominal injury. He’s set himself up well for a lucrative free agent contract after the Saints traded him away for a couple of late-round draft picks over the next two cycles.

But he wasn’t the only former Saints player enjoying his Saturday evening. Running back Boston Scott was drafted into the NFL by New Orleans back in 2018 as a sixth-round pick out Louisiana Tech, and he made the most of his two rushing attempts in the first half against New York. Scott’s first carry gained 10 yards, and his second run scored a touchdown from 3 yards out, extending the Eagles’ lead to 21-0. They went into halftime up 28-0. The 5-foot-6 Scott has become something of a Giants-slayer with 11 touchdowns scored in 9 games against Big Blue after the Eagles acquired him off of waivers as a rookie.

Sooners extend offer to Lousiana Tech transfer WR Tre Harris

With the departure of multiple receivers to the portal, Oklahoma sends out an offer to LA Tech receiver Tre Harris.

While the portal casualties for Oklahoma have risen into the double digits, it opens the door for Oklahoma to upgrade the talent that will don the Crimson and Cream.

After submitting offers to Ra Ra Thomas and Dante Cephas, the Sooners are targeting another wide receiver. This time, it’s Louisiana Tech’s Tre Harris.

At 6-foot-2, Harris had 65 receptions for 935 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2022. He was a first-team All-Conference USA selection in 2022 after earning honorable mention honors in 2021.

He ranks fourth nationally in scrimmage plays over 40 yards (6), and fifth in plays over 30 yards (9). Simply put, Harris is one of the best receivers in the portal, regardless of his former school. He’s a big play waiting to happen and would be a nice addition should the Sooners land him.

The Sooners have lost three wide receivers to the portal: Theo Wease, Brian Darby, and Trevon West. Wease is the only notable contributor from the bunch and based on Harris’ stats, he could very easily fill that void.

Harris has also received offers from Mississippi State and West Virginia.

Here are a few of his catches below.

There’s no timetable for a decision yet but expect things to move along fairly quickly as transfers typically would prefer to get to their newest destination as fast as possible in time for winter workouts and the new semester that starts in January.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

UAB vs Louisiana Tech What’s Going To Happen

UAB has had a rough season with a disastrous second half run going 1-5, but all can be fine with one more win and bowl eligibility.

It’ll get it against a Louisiana Tech team that’s not able to come up with enough consistency on defense and is struggling to get the O going.

The Bulldogs do okay when they take the ball away a bunch of times – they’re 3-1 when coming up with three turnovers or more – but UAB has only given it up multiple times once in the last seven games.

Here’s the concern, though – UAB isn’t at home.

It’s 5-1 at home and 0-5 on the road – and it’s not like it played a slew of killers other than LSU. Louisiana Tech is 0-7 on the road but 3-1 at home. The passing game will click to make this fun, but DeWayne McBride and the ground game will control this throughout.

Louisiana Tech vs UTSA Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The offense will be more than happy to make this a shootout with the Roadrunners.

The offense might not be consistent, but it’s good for 300 yards through the air against anyone who wants to party.

The Sonny Cumbie offense is cranking up well over 400 yards on a regular basis, the defense is forcing takeaways by the bunches with three or more in three of the last five games, and …

10 Best Picks Against The Spread

Why UTSA Will Win

UTSA does shootouts better.

The offense will give it away a few times, but not enough to matter. The balance will be the difference to overcome the mistakes.

Louisiana Tech can run a little bit, but it can’t get to 200 yards like UTSA can.

The Bulldog run defense is a disaster allowing 279 yards or more four times – losing all four games – and UTSA is more than happy to get everything working on the ground to go along with all Frank Harris and the passing attack can do.

What’s Going To Happen

You know those tough defensive struggles with both teams holding up in a tense-filled battle that comes down to one or two big offensive plays? Yeah, that’s not going to be this.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show as these two rumble up and down the field. UTSA will come up with a few stops, but Louisiana Tech will struggle to do anything to slow down the machine on the other side.

Louisiana Tech vs FIU Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The passing game is making things interesting.

The Bulldogs might not be winning a bunch lately, but they were able to push Rice in a shootout loss thanks to five touchdown passes, and they lost to North Texas after cranking out well over 400 yards through the air.

FIU might be having a little more success overall, but it’s struggling in the secondary allowing 580 passing yards combined over the last two weeks to UTSA and Charlotte.

FIU might be 3-4, but it’s still one of the worst teams in the country on third downs – on both sides of the ball – there are too many misfires when the offense has scoring chances, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why FIU Will Win

Can we give Mike MacIntyre a little bit of Coach of the Year recognition?

FIU is a total gut job of a team coming into the season, but it has three wins, it’s more competitive, and it starts with an offense that’s able to find enough of a passing attack to matter.

That, and the defense is taking the ball away with seven turnovers forced over the last two weeks. However, in this the job will for FIU to …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Run, run, run.

That hasn’t been easy for the Panthers who have yet to hit 165 yards on the ground, but they get to go against the nation’s worst run defense. Everyone runs, keeps running, and doesn’t stop running. The yards on the ground will be there, but …

Competition. FIU beat Bryant, New Mexico State, and a Charlotte defense that gives up 500 yards bruising its teeth in the morning.

Louisiana Tech might be having a rougher run, but it also dealt with Clemson, Missouri, a good South Alabama team on the road and a dangerous North Texas squad.

FIU will run well, but the Bulldogs will be better though the air.

Rice vs Louisiana Tech Game Preview

Why Rice Will Win

Just when it seemed like it was time to get fired up about the Owls, the couldn’t get by Houston or Florida Atlantic on the road. Even so, they’re still playing well defensively and should keep this close.

They have to win on the lines and they have to start running right away. Louisiana Tech doesn’t do anything to get behind the line, and it’s getting slaughtered against the run.

North Texas cranked up 475 yards in last week’s win. Rice won’t do that, but it’ll keep hammering away.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Rice is having a massive problem with turnovers. It gave it away three times against Florida Atlantic, five times in games against Louisiana and Houston, and times in the opener against against USC.

Louisiana Tech might be awful defensively, but it might come up with just enough big plays to avoid the break after bending.

It might be just this simple. Louisiana Tech’s offense can score and Rice’s can’t, at least when it comes to explosion.

Rice hasn’t faced too many offenses that can throw well, and …

What’s Going To Happen

The Bulldogs will bomb away to overcome a 200-yard rushing day from the Owls.

Rice will do what it can to control the game not the ground, but it’s going to have a problem keeping up.

It might be just this simple, though. Louisiana Tech is 2-0 at home and 0-4 on the road. Rice is 3-0 at home and 0-3 on the road.

Louisiana Tech vs North Texas Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The Bulldogs desperately needed a win to get the season going, and it came through with a 41-31 shootout against a decent UTEP defense.

The offense was fine, but the four takeaways played the biggest role. North Texas is having a turnover problem with 12 on the year and seven over the last three games.

The Mean Green offense is struggling on third downs, it’s forcing too many throws leading to picks, and the run defense can be plowed on. However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why North Texas Will Win

Louisiana Tech doesn’t run well enough to matter.

It had one big explosion in the win over Stephen F Austin, but that’s been it. It’ll try running on the soft Mean Green defensive front, but it needs to throw to win.

The passing yards will be there, but getting into a shootout with North Texas is a problem. The Mean Green ran on Florida Atlantic for 300 yards, threw for close to 700 yards in the previous two games, and they’ll find a way to get everything going.

As long as the running game works – and it should be able to on the Bulldog front – they’ll control this.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Both offenses will have some fun.

Louisiana Tech will wing it around for close to 300 yards, but North Texas will be a bit more balanced. When it runs well, it does better – it doesn’t want to make this about who can be more effective through the air.

Both teams will turn the ball over a few times, but at home the North Texas offense will be more effective and consistent.

UTEP vs Louisiana Tech Game Preview

Why UTEP Will Win

The defense is getting the job done.

The Miners turned things around fast winning four of their last five with the running game getting rolling in the wins, the passing game suddenly becoming accurate, and the defense holding up with a brilliant day against Boise State, a great day against the run against Charlotte, and with eight takeaways in the three wins.

Louisiana Tech doesn’t do the ground game – outside of ripping up Stephen F. Austin – and it’s having a nightmare of a time with turnovers.

The Bulldogs have given it up 12 times in the three wins, they’re not stopping the run, and the passing attack that’s supposed to rock isn’t completing enough passes. But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Louisiana Tech is finally back home.

Missouri, Clemson, and South Alabama – don’t sneer, the Jaguars are strong. Those are the road dates, and now the Bulldogs finally get another chance to work in comfortable surroundings.

The passing game isn’t bad, but it has to start hitting passes on a consistent basis. There can’t be the forced throws that plagued the team on the road, UTEP only has three picks in six games, and the Miner offense has its turnover problems, too.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Miner defense is terrific, but Louisiana Tech gets a team its own size at home – it’s going to play like it.

It’ll give up enough turnovers to make this rough, but the UTEP offense won’t do enough to take advantage of the mistakes. There won’t be anything pretty about this game, but the Bulldogs will take the W no matter what.
