Chargers safety Alohi Gilman set for expanded role in season finale

Audition time for the Chargers’ sixth-round pick.

The Chargers and Chiefs have nothing to play for in the season finale this Sunday, which makes this a great opportunity for players that haven’t seen the field that much to finally get some reps.

Among the crop that could get an expanded role this weekend is rookie safety Alohi Gilman.

Rayshawn Jenkins is likely going to be out and today, defensive coordinator Gus Bradley implied that his backup, Jahleel Addae, is not going to play in Week 17. Therefore, Gilman, as well as Jaylen Watkins, will get a good chunk of playing time.

Gilman, the sixth-round pick, has primarily been used on special teams this season. Last weekend against the Broncos when Jenkins left, he was on the field in dime packages, playing a total of 22 snaps.

This weekend, the former Notre Dame product will likely log snaps at both strong safety and dime linebacker.

Gilman was a player that always flashed in college and when he was down in Mobile, AL for the Senior Bowl. At his best in the underneath areas, he showed an understanding of pursuit angles and great instincts against the run and in zone coverage.

Given the inconsistent production from the safety position, this will be the perfect opportunity for Gilman to prove that he’s worth receiving more playing time next season. His combination of physicality and all-out effort could carve out a role.

Chargers don’t make any waiver claims after roster cuts

The Los Angeles Chargers appear to be confident with their players after making roster cuts.

After NFL roster cuts, the Chargers elected to not claim any available players off waivers.

Los Angeles is looking pretty with their 53-man roster after cutdown day. However, the team could afford to add one more safety after the loss of Derwin James, who was placed on the injured reserve.

General manager Tom Telesco reiterated that they chose not to make any claims, signifying their confidence in the safeties that they have on the roster right now.

This isn’t to say the safety group of Rayshawn Jenkins, Nasir Adderley, Desmond King and Alohi Gilman isn’t reliable. But for the sake of depth, the Bolts could have added one with experience.

The most notable free agent safeties are Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Tony Jefferson, among others. But for a team that covets scheme familiarity, I thought Jaylen Watkins and Jahleel Addae, who are both free agents, would’ve garnered attention.

Other positions that could afford to have depth added are at wide receiver and left tackle.

We will monitor to see if Los Angeles makes any roster moves ahead of the season opener against the Bengals.

Texans sign former Chargers DB Jaylen Watkins

The Houston Texans have signed former LA Chargers defensive back Jaylen Watkins on a two-year deal.

The Houston Texans have made their fourth defensive back addition of the free agency window by signing former LA Chargers defensive back Jaylen Watkins according to James Palmer.

The 28-year-old former fourth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles joins Bill O’Brien’s side on a two-year $3 million deal after making 14 appearances in 2019. Watkins notched up 23 solo tackles while allowing 24 receptions on 26 targets last season per Pro Football Focus.

A versatile player with experience at both cornerback and safety, he fits O’Brien’s demands to a tee. The Texans coach demands versatility from his players and Watkins will give the side depth in the secondary, something which has at times eluded them the last few years.

Expect to see a lot of Watkins in Brad Seely’s special teams unit and potentially as a backup cornerback behind second-year CB Lonnie Johnson. He will be battling for the spot along with fellow recent signings Phillip Gaines and Vernon Hargraves.

List of Chargers 2020 unrestricted free agents

Updated look at the 16 players scheduled to become unrestricted free agents for the Chargers.

The Los Angeles Chargers still have five games remaining in the regular season. However, sitting at 4-7, their playoff chances are nearly diminished, which means that in a little over a month the front office will have some decisions to make.

With a few notable players on the roster that are set to become unrestricted free agents, general manager Tom Telesco and company will have to start thinking about who is worthy of returning for another stint with L.A. when they move into their new stadium with the Rams in 2020.

With that, here’s an updated look at the 16 players scheduled to become unrestricted free agents at the beginning of the 2020 league year.

Chargers should activate Adrian Phillips ahead of matchup vs. Chiefs

The Los Angeles Chargers would be wise to activate safety Adrian Phillips prior to the matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.

There’s a possibility that the Chargers could see a difference-maker to their defense return to the active roster prior to the Monday night bout against the Chiefs.

Safety Adrian Phillips, who was placed on the injured reserve on Sept. 16 with a broken forearm, was designated for return from the IR on Thursday, which means the team will have 21 days to activate him.

Coach Anthony Lynn had some words that suggests Phillips could be available for the AFC West battle tomorrow.

“He’s looking good in practice. We started him out on the scout team, and his change of direction looked really good. We worked him in on some regular reps (with the defense). Now we got to make a decision and see if he can go on Monday.”

“There’s always a chance,” when asked if he will be activated. “He hasn’t played football in a long time, so you don’t want to throw someone out there before they’re ready. But I liked the way he ran around on the field,” Lynn said, per The Athletic’s Daniel Popper.

In practice this past week, Phillips played on the scout team but then earned reps with the first-team defense because he was moving around so well.

Adding Phillips back into the mix would be huge, as the Chargers face a Chiefs offense that ranks No. 6 in the league in explosive passing plays. Meanwhile, Los Angeles has struggled all year to slow opposing passing games, allowing 7.3 yards per throw.

The Chargers will have until 5:00 p.m. PT to decide whether or not Phillips will be active for tomorrow’s matchup.

If the Bolts elect to give Phillips an extended period to recover since the bye week occurs next weekend, they will have to decide between Roderic Teamer and Jaylen Watkins at the strong safety position on Monday.
