Ohio State safety announces decision to enter transfer portal

Another one to the portal #GoBucks

Ohio State has seen another player enter the transfer portal. This time it will be safety Jayden Bonsu. Bonsu is a former 3-star recruit hailing from the state of New Jersey. Bonsu came to Columbus in 2023 rated as the No. 39 safety in the class according to 247Sports.

Jim Knowles had high hopes for Bonsu, but he would redshirt his freshman year and due to injuries stayed with the second unit in the spring. Freshman Jaylen McClain passed him on the depth chart for playing time this fall.

Bonsu could see the writing on the wall with a deep group coming back at the Safety position including Caleb Downs, Malik Hartford, McClain, Keenan Nelson Jr, and LeRoy Roker. The Buckeyes also have Faheem Delane the No. 3 rated safety in 247Sports composite rankings along with four-star recruit DeShawn Stewart.

Bonsu becomes the seventh Buckeye to enter the transfer portal joining Devin Brown, Kojo Antwi, Gabe Powers, Jayden Ballard, Miles Walker, and Air Noland.

4-Star Safety

Thoughts on Ohio State’s disappointing early signing period results

It might have seemed like this was a bad day, but it wasn’t all bad #GoBucks

We all know how yesterday went, in the short term the Buckeyes looked very much like one of the losers of the day. Not only did they not get a verbal from either of the two 5-star prospects they were finalists for, [autotag]Matayo Uiagalelei [/autotag] or [autotag]Damon Wilson[/autotag], they lost [autotag]Kayin Lee[/autotag] as he flipped to [autotag]Auburn[/autotag].

To make matters worse, defensive back commit [autotag]Jayden Bonsu[/autotag] is still in the air, having tweeted he signed but no indication with who, [autotag]Miami (FL)[/autotag] being the other potential choice. Oh and transfer tackle [autotag]Ajani Cornelius[/autotag] chose Oregon over the Buckeyes as well.

It might have seemed like the sky was falling, but that’s not all that we can take away from the start to the early signing period. Find out what I thought about this disappointment and direction of [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] Football.

(Edit: as of 8:32 a.m. it has been reported by multiple outlets that Bonsu has officially signed with Ohio State)

ESPN names this 2023 Ohio State verbal as their key commit

Who do you believe is the most important commit in the ‘23 class for Ohio State? #GoBucks

With the early signing period just around the corner and the fact that many players opt to end their recruiting at this time, it is time to look at who will be linchpins for every class. ESPN’s Tom VanHaaren looked at the top 25 classes and selected one recruit from each as their key verbal (subscription may be required).

For Ohio State, it was defense end [autotag]Jason Moore[/autotag], ESPN’s 53rd overall ranked player. VanHaaren views Moore as “a player who has room to refine his game, can be important in the pass rush.” He also mentions the possibility of adding [autotag]Keon Keeley[/autotag] (don’t expect it) and [autotag]Damon Wilson[/autotag] to the defensive line haul. He fails to mention [autotag]Matayo Uiagalelei[/autotag], who I believe is much more likely to join the class than Keeley.

VanHaaren is correct about depth at the position, as the Buckeyes have three seniors ([autotag]Zach Harrison[/autotag], [autotag]Javontae Jean-Baptiste[/autotag], and [autotag]Tyler Friday[/autotag]) as the position. [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] will have to find some younger players to step up next year to play opposite [autotag]J.T. Tuimoloau[/autotag].

The improvements on the defense do warrant a defender to be selected, but in my eyes it’s a member of the secondary that needs to be highlighted. The defensive back commits of [autotag]Calvin Simpson-Hunt[/autotag], [autotag]Malik Hartford[/autotag], [autotag]Kayin Lee[/autotag], [autotag]Jayden Bonsu[/autotag], [autotag]Cedrick Hawkins[/autotag] or [autotag]Jermaine Matthews[/autotag] would be on the list, but they are ranked lower than Moore.

Four-star 2023 safety Jayden Bonsu commits to Ohio State

We had a BOOM! on Sunday for the Ohio State football program. #GoBucks

The Ohio State football program is starting to get some momentum back in recruiting, and the latest comes from 4-star 2023 safety, Jayden Bonsu.

The 6-foot, 1-inch, 210-pounder out of Hillside, New Jersey, announced his commitment to the Buckeyes on Sunday after he was a heavy Miami lean for a while. That sentiment seemed to change over the last few weeks, however, and in the end, Bonsu chose an OSU program that has churned out a ton of talent in the defensive backfield over the years.

According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Bonsu is ranked as the No. 22 safety and 259th overall prospect in the 2023 cycle. Here’s the moment that he chose Ohio State. He chose OSU over Miami, Alabama, Penn State, and Michigan State. In reality, though, it was really between OSU and Miami.

The commitment gives the Buckeyes 20 total for the 2023 class and keeps it firmly in the top five in the nation. There are still a few spots left to add to the haul, one that should once again finish as another very good one.

4-star Jayden Bonsu has featured Michigan State in his top 3 ahead of a commitment decision coming Sunday

Four-star safety Jayden Bonsu plans to make his collegiate decision on Sunday (Aug. 14). Michigan State was among Bonsu’s top three schools, making the cut alongside Ohio State and Miami.

Bonsu is a native of Hillside, New Jersey, where he plays for St. Peters Prep. He ranks as the No. 259 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class.

Ohio State appears to be the leaders in this recruitment, but Mel Tucker will try to make one last push before a decision is made on Sunday.

Crystal ball predictions pointing to Ohio State for Jayden Bonsu

Crystal ball predictions are starting to roll in for Bonsu to the Buckeyes. #GoBucks

We told you earlier in the week that four-star safety Jayden Bonsu would announce his commitment on August 14. Rumor’s regarding Bonsu’s recruitment have been all over the place. First Ohio State seemed to be the team to beat, then things started swinging in favor of Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes.

However, in a recent wave of change, The Buckeyes have had several crystal ball predictions come in that feel confident Bonsu will pick the scarlet and gray. Four recruiting experts from 247Sports have given their nod in favor of tOSU. The updated On3 recruiting predictions have also given the Bucks a 63.7% chance of landing the coveted safety.

On3 has Bonsu rated highest among recruiting services at the No. 13 safety in the country. Ohio State already has Malik Hartford and Cedrick Hawkins committed in this class, but Bonsu could be a special talent that new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles would put at his “bandit” position where his athleticism could excel.

We should know what his decision will be and if the experts know what they’re talking about in just a little over a week.

Ohio State target safety Jayden Bonsu resets commitment date

Ohio State target Jayden Bonsu reschedules commitment day to August 14. #GoBucks

Ohio State as well as the rest of the college football world waited to hear what school Jayden Bonsu would commit to on July 20. That date came and went and no word was given. Then the four-star safety announced that he will be committing on August 14, closer to his original date of August 20.

Some may say the young man is unsure, but let’s be fair… this is a pretty big decision. Bonsu, who is a New Jersey native, will pick between Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan State, Miami, and Penn State. The Hurricanes have all the crystal ball predictions, but there is talk that Bonsu may be leaning toward the Buckeyes.

While Ohio State already has two commitments at the safety position so far in Malik Hartford and Cedrick Hawkins, they are still looking to add another. Some question why the need and the answer lies with Jim Knowles’ defensive scheme. It is very safety driven and word is that Bonsu would fit perfectly at the Bandit position in Knowles’ defense.

We hope to find out for sure where the talented safety plans to play on August 14. The defensive staff could certainly use a win in the recruiting wars.

Ohio State target safety Jayden Bonsu moves commitment date up

Ohio State target Jayden Bonsu moves his commitment date up to July. #GoBucks

Originally, Jayden Bonsu was planning to announce his commitment on August 20, but it seems he’s ready to get the ball rolling a little sooner. Bonsu announced via his personal Twitter page that he’ll be moving his commitment date up to July 20.

Bonsu is the No. 22 ranked safety in the 2023 class according to 247Sports composite rankings and a top-300 player overall. The New Jersey native will be choosing between Ohio State, Alabama, Miami (FL), Michigan State, and Penn State.

The Buckeyes seem to be the leader in the clubhouse after June official visits, but the Hurricanes are picking up some steam in Bonsu’s recruiting. So much so, that the ‘Canes picked up a couple crystal ball picks to land the four-star safety.

Ohio State has two commits at the safety position so far in Malik Hartford and Cedrick Hawkins. The Buckeyes hope to add two more at the position with Caleb Downs, the nation’s No. 1 ranked safety still very much in play for OSU.
