Two more Ohio State football players won’t be returning for 2023 season

A former captain and former transfer will be moving on to the next phase of life.

The Ohio State football team will be without two more of its members when the 2023 season officially begins. Not because of the transfer portal or NFL declarations, but because it’s time to move on.

It was announced that both Tyler Friday and Palaie Gaoteote will not return for a sixth year of eligibility at the national signing day media conference on Wednesday. Both had injury-plagued careers during their time in Columbus.

Friday was voted a captain this past season after missing all of 2021 with a torn ACL. He was hoping to contribute this season as a backup, but that never materialized. He recorded three tackles in limited playing time.

Gaoteote transferred to Ohio State from USC after being a five-star prospect coming out of high school. The Bishop Gorman graduate could never quite get his footing. He had to wait on the NCAA’s ruling whether he was eligible to play with the Buckeyes. Then he couldn’t shake the injury bug. He played sparingly in two seasons with OSU.

Ohio State has 89 players on its roster, four more than the 85-man scholarship max. Expect a few more moves coming to get that number where it needs to be.

ESPN names this 2023 Ohio State verbal as their key commit

Who do you believe is the most important commit in the ‘23 class for Ohio State? #GoBucks

With the early signing period just around the corner and the fact that many players opt to end their recruiting at this time, it is time to look at who will be linchpins for every class. ESPN’s Tom VanHaaren looked at the top 25 classes and selected one recruit from each as their key verbal (subscription may be required).

For Ohio State, it was defense end [autotag]Jason Moore[/autotag], ESPN’s 53rd overall ranked player. VanHaaren views Moore as “a player who has room to refine his game, can be important in the pass rush.” He also mentions the possibility of adding [autotag]Keon Keeley[/autotag] (don’t expect it) and [autotag]Damon Wilson[/autotag] to the defensive line haul. He fails to mention [autotag]Matayo Uiagalelei[/autotag], who I believe is much more likely to join the class than Keeley.

VanHaaren is correct about depth at the position, as the Buckeyes have three seniors ([autotag]Zach Harrison[/autotag], [autotag]Javontae Jean-Baptiste[/autotag], and [autotag]Tyler Friday[/autotag]) as the position. [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] will have to find some younger players to step up next year to play opposite [autotag]J.T. Tuimoloau[/autotag].

The improvements on the defense do warrant a defender to be selected, but in my eyes it’s a member of the secondary that needs to be highlighted. The defensive back commits of [autotag]Calvin Simpson-Hunt[/autotag], [autotag]Malik Hartford[/autotag], [autotag]Kayin Lee[/autotag], [autotag]Jayden Bonsu[/autotag], [autotag]Cedrick Hawkins[/autotag] or [autotag]Jermaine Matthews[/autotag] would be on the list, but they are ranked lower than Moore.

Ohio State football names six captains for 2022

Here are your six Ohio State football captains for the 2022 season, announced by OSU on Saturday. #GoBucks

The Ohio State football team continues to make its journey through fall camp on the way to the start of the 2022 season.

On Saturday, as part of that journey, the team named six captains. The players named can forever be a part of a very short and exclusive list for the program. More than just being leaders on the field this fall, they’ll be looked at as an integral part of one of the most respected and tradition-rich programs in the history of the sport.

They’ll be noted as a captain on team reunions and functions from here on out, and be able to take part in the captain’s breakfast that’s held every homecoming.

Here are the six Ohio State football captains, as chosen by a players’ vote, complete with a bio provided by the OSU football program.

Ohio State assistant Larry Johnson, defensive line update preseason camp

Several Ohio State defensive lineman and assistant coach Larry Johnson met with the media on a Zoom call Thursday to discuss preseason prep.

It was another day of media availability for the Ohio State football team as they continue to prep for the fall season that will be upon us in just over two weeks.
