Notre Dame has lost ground on ‘23 Maryland star defensive end

Not what the Irish wanted to see…

The Irish and Ohio State Buckeyes have been battling each other for the 2023 number one overall class spot. In the recent weeks, the two teams have gone back-and-forth with each respective commitment.

Not only are they both battling each other for the number one distinction, they are also engaging in a head-to-head recruiting battle for Maryland defensive end [autotag]Jason Moore[/autotag]. Once thought to be a Notre Dame lean, multiple 247Sports crystal ball predictions have been logged in favor of the Buckeyes today.

Irish Insider Tom Loy, Ohio State insider Bill Kurelic and two of 247Sports national analysts, Steve Wiltfong and Brian Dohn all believe that Ohio State currently has the leg up on Moore’s recruitment. Those are the only current projections as to where they believe Moore will and, but each of the holds a good amount of weight within the industry.

Moore officially visited South Bend starting on June 10th and did the same with a visit to Columbus two weeks later. The Irish currently have [autotag]Keon Keeley[/autotag], [autotag]Brenan Vernon[/autotag], [autotag]Boubacar Traore[/autotag], and [autotag]Devan Houstan[/autotag] committed on the defensive line for the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Penn State hosting major official visit this week

Penn State has a major official visit scheduled for this week

Penn State is preparing for a major official visit this week, and James Franklin and his staff may have to leave a grand impression if they hope to secure a verbal commitment down the line. [autotag]Jason Moore[/autotag], the top-rated player overall in the state of Maryland, is scheduled to make an official visit to Penn State on Thursday, June 3. It will be the first official visit planned for the month of June, which will be a busy one for the highly sought-after defensive lineman.

Moore is considered a heavy lean for Notre Dame, with the Fighting Irish a lopsided favorite for Moore according to recruiting predictions. But Penn State has been in the mix for Moore from the start of the recruiting process, and Moore has already made a couple of unofficial visits to the campus. But considering Penn State is the first school on the official visit tour in June for Moore with stops at Notre Dame, Michigan, and Ohio State to follow, the Nittany Lions appear to be at a disadvantage overall.

Moore is a talented two-sport athlete with success in both football and basketball. Moore would be a phenomenal addition to the Penn State defensive line if they are fortunate enough to secure the commitment. Penn State has had a good track record with developing defensive linemen, which will surely be one of the top sales pitches from Franklin and his staff when hosting Moore for an official visit. Whether or not that is enough to win the recruiting battle remains to be seen.

Here is a look at Moore as he enters a big month in his recruiting process.

Four-star defensive lineman puts Ohio State in top five

Top-50 lineman likes what he sees at Ohio State.

Ohio State received some good news in being named as a finalist for defensive lineman, Jason Moore. Moore is a four-star recruit and a top 50 player according to 247Sports composite rankings. He is also ranked as the fifth-best D-lineman in the current recruiting cycle.

The Hyattsville, Maryland native included Ohio State on his list along with his home state Maryland Terrapins, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Penn State. With good size and room to add more, recruiting analyst Brian Dohn says Moore should be a multi-year starter at the collegiate level and has potential to be a first-round pick in the NFL draft.

Moore currently has couple crystal ball predictions in favor of the Fighting Irish to earn his commitment. However, don’t count out Larry Johnson. Moore was quoted as saying:

“I have a very good relationship with coach Larry Johnson. He’s one of the best to ever do it and I can really see myself being developed by him. I also have a good relationship with Cam Spence (former Maryland DL who joined the OSU staff as a grad assistant) and love the environment out there.”

It also doesn’t hurt matter that Moore attends the same high school, DeMatha Catholic, that produced Chase Young. We’ll keep you posted as things develop with Moore’s recruitment.

Notre Dame’s most recent commit already putting on recruiting hat

He’s looking for the “missing piece”

At first glance with four defensive line commits, it would leave you to believe that the Irish are finished recruiting the position in the current cycle. That might not be the case, as newest Notre Dame 2023 commit Devan Houstan is actively recruiting another east coast player to join him, Brenan Vernon, Keon Keeley, and Boubacar Traore.

The apple of Houstan’s eye is DeMatha Catholic lineman Jason Moore. The six-foot-six-inch and 255-pound Maryland native boasts an impressive offer list which includes Ohio State, LSU, Alabama, USC, Oklahoma and others. Moore clearly one of the best players at his position in the country and the Irish would love to add him to the current committed class.

Houstan calls Moore “the missing piece” to what would be an absolute monster haul along the line. The age old adage that games are won in the trenches still applies and adding Moore would give Marcus Freeman another weapon to rush quarterbacks.

Multiple Notre Dame 2023 commits putting their recruiting hats on

Love to see it

Recruiting isn’t an exact science, each player typically is looking for something different in their recruitment. Facilities, location, weather, the pipeline to the NFL are just a few examples of what a recruit wants at the next level.

Another one is the connection with your future teammates and two Irish commits, New Jersey cornerback Adon Shuler and instate linebacker Drayk Bowen are trying to lure in some big time recruits. Today on Twitter, both Shuler and Bowen each tagged a different high level recruit to join them in South Bend.

Shuler went on the other side of the ball, tagging Michigan quarterback Dante Moore, a 5-Star recruit, to join the Irish class.

Bowen, stayed with a potential fellow defender, Maryland end Jason Moore.

With the Irish off to an extremely impressive start to their 2023 class, adding these two stars to the group is not out of the question.

Chargers sign 11 players to future contracts

The Chargers signed 11 players to reserve/future contracts. All 11 spent all or part of the season on the practice squad.

With the 2021 season over, the Chargers have signed 11 players to future contracts.

Los Angeles signed Michael Bandy, Andre Brown, Cole Christiansen, Ben DeLuca, Emeke Egbule, Maurice Ffrench, Ryan Hunter, Hunter Kampmoyer, Forrest Merrill, Jason Moore, Foster Sarell to future deals.

All 11 players spent time on either the team’s practice squad or active roster in 2021.

The players will be added to the 90-man active roster when the 2022 offseason officially begins.

Twitter reacts to Chargers’ dreadful loss to Texans

What the general population thought of the Chargers’ Week 16 loss to the Texans.

With the playoffs on the line, the Chargers blew an opportunity against a Texans team that sat near the bottom of the league and had 16 players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list – falling by the score of 41-29.

Here’s what the general population had to say about Los Angeles’ loss to Houston in Week 16:

Everything we know about Chargers’ 41-29 loss to Texans

Highlighting everything notable from the Los Angeles Chargers’ loss to the Houston Texans.

The Chargers fell to the Texans by the score of 41-29.

To recap Week 16, here is everything we know:

It was over when…

Davis Mills found Nico Collins to put the Texans up, 34-23, with 3:23 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Notable numbers of the game

The Texans were 9-of-13 on third-down attempts.

The Chargers turned the ball over three times.

The Texans won the time of possession battle, 34:52 to 25:08.

The Chargers allowed 437 yards.

Quick takes

– Justin Herbert was efficient for the most part, finishing the game with a 77% completion percentage. However, he made some questionable decisions with his passes that were picked off.

– Filling in for Austin Ekeler, who was out with COVID-19, Justin Jackson had a great showing. Aside from the costly fumble in the fourth quarter, Jackson was effective both on the ground and in the passing game, totaling 162 yards from scrimmage and two rushing touchdowns.

– A good chunk of Herbert’s production came in the short areas from Jackson. But he spread the wealth throughout the afternoon. Jason Moore, Josh Palmer, Jared Cook, and Keenan Allen had at least three catches. Moore led the pack with 56 yards, while Palmer had five receptions for 43 yards and a score.

– For the most part, the Corey Linsley-less offensive line held its own. Herbert was sacked just once. The group was dinged for penalties on two occasions (holding by Scott Quessenberry and a false start by Rashawn Slater). The Chargers finished 4.2 yards per carry.

– The depth of defense has been tested this season, but it was exploited against a Texans offense led by a rookie quarterback who was without his top skill player in Brandin Cooks and three starters along the offensive line.

– Without Justin Jones and Joe Gaziano, two of the better defenders up front, the Chargers were gashed for 189 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

– Kenneth Murray, who got the start in place of Joey Bosa and Chris Rumph II, struggled. He showed he lacks the strength at the point of attack to hold his ground, the inability to disengage when blockers get their hands on him, and a lack of a plan when rushing the passer.

– Missed tackles are also to blame for the team’s run defense woes.

– Davis Mills put together a solid performance, but the lack of pass rush and talent in the secondary was evident. Without Michael Davis, they were forced to lean on Davontae Harris, who allowed the 41-yard touchdown right before the half. The team was also down Derwin James.

– Asante Samuel Jr. and Alohi Gilman returned, but some rust was seen in their games, which is to be expected after missing the last four and five games, respectively.

What’s next?

The Chargers return home to take on the Broncos on Jan. 2 at 1:05 pm PT.

Chargers promote 8 players from practice squad

The Chargers added some much-needed reinforcements.

The Chargers announced on Saturday that they’ve elevated eight players from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Texans.

Those players are:

WR Michael Bandy

RB Darius Bradwell

DL Andrew Brown

S Ben DeLuca

EDGE Emeke Egbule

WR Maurice Ffrench

DL Forrest Merrill

WR Jason Moore

Los Angeles has 13 players on the COVID-19 list, and all of them will not play in Week 16, so the team needs all the reinforcements they could get.

Michael Bandy, Jason Moore and Maurice Ffrench will fill out the wide receiver room, with Mike Williams and Jalen Guyton out.

Austin Ekeler is out, so Darius Bradwell will fill the void in the backfield.

Justin Jones and Joe Gaziano will not play, which led to the decision of promoting Andrew Brown and Forrest Merrill.

Derwin James is questionable with a hamstring injury and Mark Webb is still out, so Ben DeLuca will fill out the safety room.

Joey Bosa and Chris Rumph II are not, which led to the elevation of Emeke Egbule.
