Seahawks 53-man roster tracker: Leonard Williams in, Cody Thompson out

Here’s the updated 53-man roster by jersey number going into tomorrow’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

The Seahawks are serious about making a deep postseason run this year. Just hours after their home win over the Browns, Seattle pulled off a trade that should help them get there. The front office has sent a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-rounder to the Giants in exchange for Leonard Williams, one of the top interior pass rushers in the league.

To make room for Wiliams, the Seahawks have waived wide receiver Cody Thompson. Our roster tracker is now updated (Oct. 31).

Updated Seahawks edge depth chart after Frank Clark re-signs

How the return of Frank Clark and the injury to Uchenna Nwosu change Seattle’s depth chart at edge.

The Seahawks are reportedly re-signing defensive end Frank Clark, reuniting with their second-round pick from the 2015 NFL draft. Since Clark was traded to the Chiefs back in 2019 he’s enjoyed a lot of success, including winning two Super Bowls and rising to third all-time in playoff sacks. Now Clark will try to keep Seattle’s up-and-coming edge rotation from dropping off after a season-ending injury to starter Uchenna Nwosu.

Here’s what we believe the team’s depth chart now looks like with Nwosu likely about to go on injured reserve and Clark joining the 53-man roster.

  • Uchenna Nwosu
  • Boye Mafe
  • Darrell Taylor
  • Frank Clark
  • Derick Hall
  • Levi Bell (practice squad)

While adding Clark to the mix should keep things running relatively smooth, this group could still use another weapon. Landing one before the trade deadline next week should still be a priority.

Seahawks sign DE Frank Clark, bringing him back to Seattle

It’s the year of reunion for the Seattle Seahawks. During the offseason, they brought back linebacker Bobby Wagner and defensive lineman Jarran Reed. Now, another former Seahawk has found his way back home: defensive end Frank Clark.

After spending four seasons in Kansas City — where he played in three Super Bowls and won two rings — Clark was released by the Chiefs and signed with their AFC West division rivals, the Denver Broncos. However, Clark’s time in the Mile High City lasted all of five games, and he was released. Now, he’s coming back to where his career started.

The Emerald City is where Clark spent the first four years of his career after being selected in the second round of the 2015 NFL draft by the Seahawks. During his final year in Seattle, Clark recorded a career-best 13 sacks.

His first stint with the Seahawks came to a conclusion when the team traded him to the Chiefs for a first-round pick prior to the 2019 season; the deal came after Seattle had franchise-tagged him. Clark never had regular-season sack totals in Kansas City like he did in Seattle, as the best he had was eight in his first season. But where Clark made his hay was in the postseason. His 13.5 playoff sacks are No. 3 all time in NFL history.

Clark comes home to help a Seahawks pass rush that lost LB Uchenna Nwosu for the year. Seattle’s defensive front has gotten after opposing quarterbacks as of late, so Clark will have to be fighting for sacks.

One big question will be answered before Clark takes the field: Since his old No. 55 jersey is being worn by Dre’Mont Jones, what will Clark’s new number be?

3 EDGE targets for the Seahawks at the 2023 NFL trade deadline

Tthere are several high-quality edge defenders who could be on the trade block. Here are three worth targeting…

In the modern NFL you can never have too many options at a few key positions. Among them are wide receiver, cornerback and edge rushers. The Seattle Seahawks are as stacked as any team in football in the first two and they have a pretty decent rotation on the edge. However, that unit just suffered a significant blow as the No. 1 option, Uchenna Nwosu will require surgery on his pectoral injury, ending his 2023 season.

For now head coach Pete Carroll says the team is not pursuing adding another edge and they’ll roll with Boye Mafe, Darrell Taylor, Derick Hall and the rest. We think it would be unwise not to at least inquire about star edge rushers around the NFL who might be available at the trade deadline – now just six days away.

Good news – if Carroll is just playing possum or if he changes his mind, there are several high-quality edge defenders who could be on the trade block. Here are three worth targeting over the coming days…

Seahawks OLB Uchenna Nwosu promises to come back even better

Nwosu thanked Seattle fans for their support and pledged to come back even better.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll told reporters yesterday that outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu will require surgery for his strained pectoral. That means he will be out for the rest of the 2023 season.

Nobody is more disappointed than Nwosu. Last night on Twitter he thanked Seattle fans for their support and pledged to come back even better.

While Nwosu isn’t a big name on a defense that is as loaded as it’s been since the breakup of the Legion of Boom, this is nevertheless a pretty significant blow. Nwosu does a lot more than just get pressure on the quarterback and he’ll be missed in multiple ways. The worst will likely be in run defense, where Nwosu’s replacement has proven a liability.

Darrell Taylor is the next man up in the edge rotation, and we got the full experience after Nwosu went down against the Cardinals. While Taylor finally made a difference as a pass rusher for the first time this season, his inability to consistently set the edge popped up again in a bad way. The only touchdown Arizona scored was on a 25-yard option run from quarterback Joshua Dobbs. Taylor bit hard on the mesh and opened a lane for Dobbs, who took it the rest of the way.

Carroll says that the team isn’t looking to add another edge. Hopefully this is just a smokescreen, because their need for more options at that spot is even more urgent now that Nwosu is out.

Seahawks injury updates: DK Metcalf, Abe Lucas, Uchenna Nwosu

After it was over, Seattle head coach Pete Carroll gave the media updates on several injured players.

The Seattle Seahawks defeated the Arizona Cardinals at home on Sunday by a score of 20-10. While it wasn’t even close to pretty a win is a win and this was an absolutely critical one in terms of playoff probability. Even better, the team came out of yesterday’s game relatively unscathed.

After it was over, Seattle head coach Pete Carroll gave the media updates on several key players. Here’s what he had to say about each.

Uchenna Nwosu: Devon Witherspoon ‘looking like a veteran out here’

Uchenna Nwosu: Devon Witherspoon ‘looking like a veteran out here’

It appears the Seattle Seahawks didn’t just make the correct pick at No. 5 overall in the 2023 NFL draft, they might have hit a home run. Despite some questioning for months if selecting Devon Witherspoon over defensive tackle Jalen Carter was the correct move, Witherspoon is showing his skills off in a remarkable way.

Monday Night Football against the Giants was such a suffocating performance from Witherspoon he might have locked up Defensive Rookie of the Year honors right then and there. However, it isn’t just fans and members of the media who are noticing, but his own teammates.

Seahawks pass rusher Uchenna Nwosu is among them, and took the time to elaborate on his young teammate. Nwosu spoke on the subject, and his comments are below, via John Boyle at Seahawks.com:

“Man, he’s looking good. Little ‘Spoon, man. He’s looking like a veteran out here; he’s doing his thing. The 97-yard pick-six, the two sacks, he just looks so comfortable out there. He knows what he’s doing, and I can’t wait to see him keep growing and growing.”

Seattle appears to have yet another star emerging in their secondary. While Carter would have made an immediate impact on their defensive line and surely would’ve been a great player, if Pete Carroll wanted a corner at No. 5 we should’ve known Witherspoon was special.

Witherspoon’s next opportunity for greatness won’t be easy, as he will have to defend against the Cincinnati Bengals’ trio of talented wide receivers next week.

Studs and Duds from Seattle’s 37-31 win vs. Detroit

It was a memorable Sunday for the Seahawks, who got their first win of the season

For the first time in 2023, the Seattle Seahawks are in the win column. They bounced back in a major way from their Week 1 trouncing with an explosive 37-31 overtime win on Sunday.

For a second straight season, the Seahawks leave Ford Field with another shootout win. Only this time, a far more dramatic finish.

Seattle avoided the dreaded 0-2 start and are back on track, at least for now. Here are the biggest Studs and Duds from their Week 2 showdown:

9 Seahawks highlights from their overtime win over the Lions

Here are nine of the team’s highlights from today’s game.

The Seattle Seahawks have somehow have escaped Ford Field with a desperately-needed overtime victory, 37-31. After blowing a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter against the Detroit Lions, Seattle marched down the field in the extra period and Tyler Lockett scored the walkoff touchdown.

Here are nine of the team’s highlights from today’s game.

Lions rule out starting left tackle Taylor Decker vs. Seahawks

Yesterday, Detroit downgraded left tackle Taylor Decker to out for today’s game.

The Seahawks will be playing today’s game against the Lions without both of their starting offensive tackles. Right tackle Abe Lucas was placed on injured reserve earlier this week and will undergo surgery on his knee. On Friday, left tackle Charles Cross was also ruled out with his turf toe issue. Pete Carroll has named Stone Forsythe and Jake Curhan as the starters in their place, but the team also signed two new OL this week just in case.

While that sounds bad, there is a silver lining here. The Lions are also going to be down at least one starter for their own offensive line. Yesterday, Detroit downgraded left tackle Taylor Decker to out for today’s game.

This is a significant blow, as Decker is one of the league’s best on the blindside. They could slide Penei Sewell over to start in his place this week, but then they’d be opening up a hole at right tackle. This should represent an opportunity for Uchenna Nwosu and the other edge rushers on the right side of Seattle’s defensive line to get some pressures against a backup.

As for the run game, the Lions tend to rush to their right side behind Sewell anyway. That will put Boye Mafe’s run defense to the test – but he showed a lot of promise in that department during the preseason.
