Former Patriots running back Rex Burkhead announced his retirement from football

Former New England Patriots running back Rex Burkhead hung up the cleats on Monday evening, ending a 10-year career in the NFL. He made an announcement on X.

He spent the first four seasons of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals, before finishing off his run with stints at both the Patriots and Houston Texans. All told, he recorded 253 carries for 1,026 yards and 11 touchdowns with the Patriots.

Perhaps his most famous touchdown during his time in New England was the push to the pylon against the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2018 AFC Championship Game. The touchdown itself was the running back’s second of the postseason to that point. He would finish with three during the playoffs that year.

“I’d like to all my friends, fans and other family who have cheered me on throughout my career,” Burkhead posted. “From the days as a Plano Wildcat, Husker, Bengal, Patriot and Texans you all have encouraged me every single day and I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart.”

Burkhead was a great fit for a Patriots offense that heavily utilized pass-catching running backs with Tom Brady under center. His time in New England will certainly be remembered, and his contributions will never be forgotten.

34 days till Patriots season opener: Every player to wear No. 34 for New England

Here’s a list of every Patriots player to wear the No. 34 jersey number

The New England Patriots are officially 34 days away from their 2023 season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. So we’re continuing our countdown series by listing every Patriots player that has ever worn a No. 34 jersey.

It’s hard not to think of some of the standout running backs, particularly in the Bill Belichick coaching era, when it comes to Patriots players and the No. 34.

Rex Burkhead was the one that powered his way into the end zone in the 2018 AFC Championship Game to deliver the dagger to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime. Shane Vereen had a team-high 11 receptions for the Patriots to help knock off the Seattle Seahawks at Super Bowl XLIX.

And Sammy Morris plowed for 727 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in 13 games to contribute to an 11-win season without Tom Brady at quarterback in 2008.

Let’s take a look at every Patriots player throughout franchise history that has worn the No. 34 (via Pro Football Reference).

Rex Burkhead recovers Davis Mills fumble for Texans touchdown

A Davis Mills fumble turned into a Rex Burkhead touchdown for the Texans

Rex Burkhead got an unexpected Christmas gift from Houston Texans quarterback Davis Mills on Saturday.

The veteran running back gladly took it as he fell on the fumble by Mills in the end zone for a Texans touchdown.

The Titans’ troubles were continuing on a chilly day in Nashville.

WATCH: QB Davis Mills fumbles for Texans’ first touchdown against the Titans

Davis Mills fumbled at the 1-yard line to help the Houston Texans score their first touchdown against the Tennessee Titans.

The Houston Texans have found uncommon ways to move the football and score points.

The past two games the Texans have deployed a two quarterback system with quarterback Jeff Driskel getting snaps in the same drives as starter Davis Mills. Nevertheless the ball moves and Houston scores points.

The Texans may have added a new one to their arsenl.

On third-and-goal from the Titans’ 6-yard line with 2:40 to go in the first quarter, Mills scrambled to his right and fumbled at the 1-yard line. Running back Rex Burkhead had the presence of mind to fall on the football for Houston’s first touchdown to tie the game 7-7.

Texans QB Davis Mills confident in run game if RB Dameon Pierce misses time

Houston Texans quarterback Davis Mills still has confidence in the run game if Dameon Pierce has to miss time with an ankle injury.

The Houston Texans will more than likely be without rookie Dameon Pierce when they take on the Kansas City Chiefs.

The fourth-round running back injured his ankle in the fourth quarter of the 27-23 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 14. Pierce left AT&T Stadium in Arlington in a walking boot.

“It’s going to be tough not having him this week, but we have a lot of guys who are talented and ready to step up in that room and make plays,” quarterback Davis Mills told reporters Dec. 14. “It’s kind of that next man up mentality. We’re ready for anyone to go up and start taking those touches.”

The Texans made a move to their running back corps by waiving Eno Benjamin and signing Gerrid Doaks to the practice squad. However, it will more than likely be Rex Burkhead and Dare Ogunbowale who carry the load for Houston.

Mills says that working with the Texans’ running backs in practice every day is what engenders confidence in him they can get the job done.

Said Mills: “Being with them every day gives confidence. We know exactly what they’re capable of. We know they’re going to go out there and do the right thing. Both of those guys are very talented, and they’re able to win their one-on-ones.”

The Texans could also move the ball on the ground in a unique way with backup quarterback Jeff Driskel. The 6-4, 235-pound signal caller rushed seven times for 36 yards in the Week 14 loss, but his run-pass option plays sparked the offense.

Texans vs. Browns inactives: RB Rex Burkhead down

The Houston Texans declared running back Rex Burkhead as one of their inactives against the Cleveland Browns.

The Houston Texans declared their inactives for their Week 13 encounter with the Cleveland Browns Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at NRG Stadium.

Houston designated running back Rex Burkhead (concussion), defensive lineman Thomas Booker, tackle Austin Deculus, and tight end O.J. Howard inactive.

The Texans already ruled out cornerback Derek Stingley (hamstring) and receiver Brandin Cooks (calf) on Friday.

Houston also elevated defensive back Cobi Francis from the practice squad on Saturday.

The Browns declared quarterback Kellen Mond, receiver Michael Woods, cornerback Thomas Graham, defensive end Isaiah Thomas, and defensive tackle Tommy Togiai inactive.

Tight end David Njoku (knee) was already ruled out on Friday.

Browns vs. Texans: David Njoku ruled out, Houston without Derek Stingley

Both teams in this matchup between Browns vs. Texans will be a relatively healthy one for both sides

As the Cleveland Browns get set to head to Houston to take on the Texans, only one player was given an injury designation as tight end David Njoku will miss this matchup. Houston will be missing two as well, so the Browns vs. Texans will be a relatively healthy showing for both sides.

The Texans will be without first round pick Derek Stingley and wide receiver Brandin Cooks as the Browns come to town. Houston running back Rex Burkhead is also questionable in this game with a concussion despite practicing in full today.

Can the Browns win two in a row as they get set to take on the Texans? They have the health to do it as quarterback Deshaun Watson gets set for his first career start in the brown and orange.
