Notre Dame transfer Lorenzo Styles Jr. gets rid of black stripe

Lorenzo Styles Jr. is not only changing schools but positions as well. #GoBucks

Black stripe alert! Out of high school, Lorenzo Styles Jr. decided on Notre Dame to play his college ball instead of following in his father’s footsteps at Ohio State. A four-star prospect coming out of Pickerington Central, Styles was a highly touted wide receiver and defensive back.

After a two-year stay in South Bend where he put up respectable numbers as a wideout, Styles decided he wanted a fresh start both in surroundings and position. So he entered the transfer portal and decided to come home to Columbus and moved back to cornerback.

Styles was originally recruited by the Buckeyes in 2021 to be a corner. Ultimately, that’s where his path brings him, it just took longer to get there. Now Styles has lost his black stripe and is welcomed as the newest member of the Brotherhood.

Lorenzo’s younger brother, Sonny, also plays in Scarlet and Gray, coming to Ohio State in 2022 after reclassifying as the No. 2 safety in the land. The elder Styles may have trouble finding time on the field with a talented defensive back unit, but he has two years of eligibility remaining. He will add depth to a key position for the Buckeyes.

College Football Recruiting: Notre Dame Makes Top Six for Top Receiver

Notre Dame is in need of some good news on the recruiting front. Since this pandemic has taken over and recruiting visits have been halted, Notre Dame hasn’t been able to get a few of their biggest targets for 2021 on campus, leading to their team ranking continuing to fall (11th at last check by 247Sports).

Good news came Saturday though as four-star wideout Donte Thornton of Baltimore listed his top six teams and Notre Dame has a seat at the table.

It’s probably not what you’d guess the final six for a four-star talent from the east coast to look like. Virginia is near to home and Florida State isn’t terribly far off but Notre Dame is the third closest in proximity for Thornton, who lists three Pac 12 schools as well (Arizona State, Oregon, USC).

Notre Dame currently has ten commitments in the 2021 class, although that sounds likely to soon decrease. Lorenzo Styles, Jr., a four-star from Pickerington, Ohio is the lone wide receiver commitment as of now for Notre Dame.

Was Notre Dame a winner or loser during the spring transfer portal window?

How did you feel about the Irishā€™s spring portal work?

As we all know, there was plenty of movement for [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] football during the spring transfer portal window.

Now that player are no longer allowed to enter their names into the portal, 247Sports took a look back and named winners and losers of the spring transfers and it didnā€™t go all that well for the Irish.

Itā€™s hard to argue Robbie Weinsteinā€™s assessment, they losses were significant. Key contributors on offense quarterback [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag], running back [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag] and wide receiver [autotag]Lorenzo Styles Jr.[/autotag] all left for more playing time.

Linebacker [autotag]Prince Kollie[/autotag], a former 5-star, was the only defender to leave and even though he didnā€™t make much of an impact on the field, losing a talent like that isnā€™t easy to overcome.

For me the biggest loss was Buchner. It wasnā€™t about his productivity on the field, as I was often a critic of his play, it was about the depth. Weinstein also sees that issue as he noted ā€œbut if (Sam) Hartman gets hurt? That could be an issue.ā€

A big one, thereā€™s no experience behind transfer [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag] and it might be in head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag]ā€™s interest to go to the portal and get one. Even that move wouldnā€™t make them a winner, but it would give some much needed depth at quarterback.

Thoughts on Ohio Stateā€™s commitment of Lorenzo Styles Jr.

What did you think of the commitment of Styles Jr.? #GoBucks

Ohio State filled a need yesterday in the defensive backfield with a commitment from Lorenzo Styles Jr.

The former Notre Dame wide receiver and Buckeye legacy now joins his brother Sonny, as a member of the Ohio State secondary.

There is plenty to think about what has transpired here as the Buckeyes took a player who is in the midst of a positional transition.

As someone who knows the Irish well, I also help out over there, this move was one I was excited to see play out during Notre Dameā€™s spring game. Ultimately that didnā€™t happen and Styles Jr. entered the portal.

There are plenty of thoughts that I have had since he entered the portal and returned back ā€œhome,ā€ and here they are.

Notre Dame transfer Lorenzo Styles Jr. commits to Ohio State

Welcome home! #GoBucks

This weekend was all about the NFL draft, but in the midst of that bruhaha, the Ohio State football team received a couple of commitments, one of the traditional variety and another via the transfer portal.

On Saturday, OSU legacy player and former Notre Dame wide receiver Lorenzo Styles Jr. committed to the Buckeyes through the transfer portal. Styles has a significant family connection. He is the son of former Ohio State linebacker Lorenzo Styles and brother of current safety Sonny Styles. Both played their high school ball at Pickerington Central, just a buckeye’s throw from the banks of the Olentangy.

Styles was a four-star wide receiver when he committed to the Fighting Irish in the 2021 class, but he was also a blue-chip defensive back. He spent the last two seasons catching passes in South Bend, notching 54 passes for 648 yards and two touchdowns. He’ll join the Buckeyes presumably as a cornerback.

Styles will have two years of eligibility left. It’ll be interesting to see how all of the suddenly talented bodies in the back end of the defense sort themselves out over the next year or so.

Ohio State legacy football player and Notre Dame transfer to take visit to Columbus

Would you like to see this legacy Buckeye make his way to Columbus? #GoBucks

In the brave new world of college football, the transfer portal appears to be a very big part of the game and is here to stay. So, get used to a slew of players moving from program to program even across the bluest of the blue bloods.

Such is the case with Notre Dame linebacker, Lorenzo Styles Jr. He was a five-star defensive back and four-star receiver when he committed to the Fighting Irish for the 2021 class. However, he is in the transfer portal and looking for a new home after modest success as a wide receiver in his first two years in South Bend.

If you recognize that name, maybe you remember his father, Lorenzo Styles, who was a first team All-Big Ten performer at linebacker while at Ohio State from 1992 to 1994. His other son, Sonny, is a budding young star at safety for the Buckeyes.

According to Clay Hall of the ABC affiliate in Columbus, Styles Jr. is expected to visit Ohio State as one of the schools he is entertaining transferring to.

It’s unknown if Styles would be a good fit in Columbus. The Buckeyes are over the scholarship limit, seem set at wide receiver and look much improved in the secondary. However, if defense is where Styles can fit in, it would be hard to pass up and you’d have to think the OSU coaches would try to get creative to see what they can do.

We’ll stay on top of any further developments as they occur.

Former Notre Dame football starter has entered the transfer portal

A surprising move for the former starter

This news is a bit surprising, but shouldnā€™t be if youā€™ve been following what has happened during [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag]ā€™s spring practices.

Wide receiver, I mean cornerback, [autotag]Lorenzo Styles Jr.[/autotag] has entered the transfer portal ahead of playing in the Blue and Gold game.

The timing of this decision is odd, as Styles Jr. was in the midst of making the transition from receiver to corner this spring. Personally, I was excited to see how this move would work out, but now we wonā€™t get that chance.

If I had to guess, Styles Jr. wants to continue to play wide receiver at this level, but it doesnā€™t make much sense after two seasons of up-and-down play. Ā He caught 54 balls for 684 yards and two scores, while adding in 4 rushes for 86 yards.

We wish Styles Jr. the best as he looks to find his new football home.

The day after: Lasting thoughts on Notre Dameā€™s epic comeback over South Carolina

What still sticks out in your mind Irish fans?

How nice was it to wake up knowing that the Irish were winners of theĀ [autotag]TaxSlayer Gator Bowl[/autotag]? Really nice, right?

As we all continue to watch the remaining bowl games, we can now look back on what happened yesterday and what could happen in the future withĀ [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and theĀ [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] program. Itā€™s going to be a very interesting off-season in South Bend, one which could very well give us an idea of what to expect going forward.

There were plenty of those thoughts that popped into my head since yesterday and here they are on plenty of Irish topics.

Tale of the Tape: Leading Receivers – Lorenzo Styles vs. Antwane Wells

Are the Irish in trouble with this area for the Gator Bowl?

Understanding why [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag] isn’t on this chart but still seeing it has to be a bitter pill for Notre Dame fans to swallow. With the best tight end in Irish history preparing for the NFL draft, the title of most productive Irish receiver falls to [autotag]Lorenzo Styles Jr.[/autotag] While Irish fans would have liked to see more than one touchdown for the player with that distinction going into the Gator Bowl, this is how it’s going to be. Still, maybe Styles will turn a bunch of heads.

South Carolina has retained its leading receiver for the season in Antwane Wells Jr. If all goes well for him in this game, he will reach 1,000 receiving yards for the season. That could be easy since the Gamecocks have NFL-bound quarterback Spencer Rattler available for this game.

All of this could lead to a rough contest for the Irish, but maybe it only looks rough on paper. Maybe they’ll be the program with the offensive showcase instead.

Five keys for Notre Dame to defeat South Carolina

What the Irish need to do to get a Gator Bowl win

The wait between the regular season finale and bowl games is always difficult, but forĀ [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag], game week is finally here. Their opponent,Ā [autotag]South Carolina[/autotag] makes it two USCā€™s in-a-row and there are certainly similarities between them.

[autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] will coach his second bowl game and will look to find a way into the win column after last yearā€™s difficult loss toĀ [autotag]Oklahoma State[/autotag] in theĀ [autotag]PlayStation Fiesta Bowl[/autotag].

This venue is different, theĀ [autotag]TaxSlayer Gator Bowl[/autotag] but the objective is the same, get a bowl win and momentum going into the 2023 season. For the Irish to do that, there are keys to their success and here are five of them.
