Chargers trim roster to 85 players

The Los Angeles Chargers waived five players.

The Chargers have trimmed their roster down to 85 players to meet the mandatory cut deadline, which was set for 1 pm PT on Tuesday.

To get it to 85, Los Angeles waived wide receiver Maurice Ffrench, quarterback Brandon Peters, safety Skyler Thomas, and defensive lineman Forrest Merrill and offensive lineman Isaac Weaver with injury designations.

This is the first of three roster cuts L.A. is required to make.

Here’s a look at the rest of the mandatory cut dates:

The Clemson Insider recently spoke with an ACC legacy recruit, who is already drawing interest from Clemson.

The Tigers stopped by Mandarin High School (Jacksonville, Fla.) during the evaluation period to check in on Jaime French, who is already one of the top receivers in the class of 2025.

“Really just the director of recruiting has been sending me updates about the camp dates and stuff like that,” Ffrench said when asked what he’s been hearing from Clemson. “They stopped by the school, watching my spring practice and me running routes. You know they can’t really say too much because I’m a freshman.”

Ffrench is unsure which Clemson assistant coach stopped by his high school, but it’s reasonable to assume that it was either Tyler Grisham or CJ Spiller, both of whom were on the recruiting trail in the Sunshine State recently.

In any event, Ffrench said that it certainly proves that Clemson is interested in him as a receiver prospect going forward. He also indicated that he’s looking forward to having a chance to participate in the Dabo Swinney Camp in the coming weeks.

“It means a lot,” Ffrench said regarding interest from Clemson this early in his recruitment. “It’s a blessing.”

Jaime is getting his camp schedule together now, so right now the only camp date he has locked in is the University of Alabama on June 8. However, he reiterated just how much he does want to camp at Clemson this summer.

Even though he’s just a freshman, Ffrench has already picked up offers from schools like Coastal Carolina, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami, Michigan, Mississippi State, Pitt, USF and West Virginia.

He already had offers from the University of Miami and Georgia before he even took a snap at the high school level.

While he’s only just begun the recruitment process, Ffrench is not going through it blindly. He’s fortunate that his older brother, Maurice, who played at Pitt from 2016-20, is someone that he can look up to and lean on for advice.

Especially when considering that Maurice is in a place where Jaime wants to be — the NFL.

After a career year, in which he recorded 96 receptions for 850 yards with four touchdowns, Maurice went undrafted in the 2020 NFL draft and later signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. He spent time on Kansas City’s practice squad but was later let go. Currently, he’s a part of the Los Angeles Chargers organization.

“Me and him’s relationship plays a big part in my future and my recruitment,” Jaime said. “Like I said, he’s my brother, of course, he’s gonna play a big part in my recruitment. To have somebody to look up to is a blessing.”

What’s the best piece of advice that Maurice has given him about the recruitment process?

“Have fun,” Jaime recalled. “Go on all your visits. Have a great time. You only go through high school once, make sure you have a great time and enjoy yourself.”

Jaime also considers it a blessing that he was able to get some Varsity film this past season and show college coaches around the country what he’s made of.

“I’m 6-1, I can go get the ball when needed,” he said when asked to describe himself as a player. “I’m a big-time playmaker. I can make plays when needed, especially down the field. Anything you need me to do, I can do for you. I got good ball-hawking skills.”

Chargers sign 11 players to future contracts

The Chargers signed 11 players to reserve/future contracts. All 11 spent all or part of the season on the practice squad.

With the 2021 season over, the Chargers have signed 11 players to future contracts.

Los Angeles signed Michael Bandy, Andre Brown, Cole Christiansen, Ben DeLuca, Emeke Egbule, Maurice Ffrench, Ryan Hunter, Hunter Kampmoyer, Forrest Merrill, Jason Moore, Foster Sarell to future deals.

All 11 players spent time on either the team’s practice squad or active roster in 2021.

The players will be added to the 90-man active roster when the 2022 offseason officially begins.

Chargers make roster moves ahead of Week 9 matchup vs. Eagles

The Chargers are very thin in the secondary.

The Los Angeles Chargers made a few roster moves ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Wide receiver Maurice Ffrench and cornerback Kiondre Thomas were elevated from the practice squad to the active roster.

The moves come after Michael Davis and Asante Samuel Jr. were ruled out, and Alohi Gilman is doubtful.

Furthermore, CB Tevaughn Campbell was added to the injury report with a groin and is now questionable.

If Campbell can’t play, Ryan Smith and Kemon Hall will be the starting outside corners while Chris Harris Jr. starts in the slot.

Ffrench, an undrafted free agent out of Pittsburgh, never appeared in a regular season game with the Chiefs.

Ffrench finished his collegiate career with 156 catches for 1,637 yards and 14 touchdowns in 45 games, while tallying over 600 yards and two touchdowns between punt and kick returns.

Thomas spent three seasons at Minnesota before transferring to Kansas State for his senior campaign, totaling 100 tackles, 11 passes defensed, two tackles for loss and an interception.

Thomas was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Browns.

Former Chiefs WR Maurice Ffrench signed to Chargers practice squad

The #Chiefs terminated the contract of WR Maurice Ffrench on Tuesday and now he’s joining the #Chargers’ practice squad.

The Kansas City Chiefs released WR Maurice Ffrench from the practice squad on Tuesday and it didn’t take him very long to find a new home.

Ffrench originally signed with Kansas City as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Pittsburgh following the 2020 NFL draft. He amassed over 1,600 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns for the Panthers over four seasons, he was also utilized in the running game and as a return specialist.

The Chiefs worked to develop Ffrench on the practice squad in 2020. He re-signed with the team on a reserve/future contract and spent the entire 2021 offseason working toward making the 53-man roster. The bevy of receiver competition the Chiefs brought in gave him little-to-no chance at success.

After his release from the Chiefs’ practice squad, an AFC West rival pick him up. The Los Angeles Chargers announced that they signed Ffrench for their practice squad, sending another receiver to the practice squad injured list in a corresponding move.

Ffrench replaces former Virginia WR Joe Reed, who also doubled as a return specialist. It’s pretty clear that Ffrench’s appeal for Los Angeles is his special teams ability. He notched over 600 yards in punt and kick return yardage, while also scoring two touchdowns with the University of Pittsburgh.

Hopefully, the Chargers don’t make the Chiefs regret their decision to let Ffrench go. Kansas City has yet to reveal a corresponding move following Ffrench’s release.

Chargers sign WR Maurice Ffrench to practice squad

The Chargers added a special teams standout to the practice squad.

The Chargers signed wide receiver Maurice Ffrench to the practice squad on Wednesday.

Ffrench takes the spot left by WR Joe Reed, who was placed on the injured list.

After going undrafted out of the University of Pittsburgh in 2020, Ffrench signed a rookie contract with the Chiefs and was added to their practice squad.

Following the season, Ffrench signed a reserve/future contract. After the preseason, he was added to the practice squad but ended up being released.

Ffrench never appeared in a regular season game.

Ffrench finished his collegiate career with 156 catches for 1,637 yards and 14 touchdowns in 45 games, while tallying over 600 yards and two touchdowns between punt and kick returns.

He reunites with wide receivers coach Chris Beatty, who held the same position at Pittsburgh during the 2019 season.

The team may look to elevate him to the active roster and give him a shot as a return specialist.
