Dolphins waive three UDFAs after rookie minicamp sessions

Well, that was quick.

After selecting four players in the 2023 NFL draft and signing 21 undrafted free agents, the Miami Dolphins began their rookie minicamp on Friday, which included all of those first-year players and others who received invites.

However, after just two days, the Dolphins have waived three members of their undrafted class – offensive linemen Jarrett Horst, Alex Jensen and DJ Scaife Jr.

Horst started in 34 of his 35 college games for Michigan State and Arkansas State. Jensen started 38 games at left tackle for South Dakota, earning second-team All-Missouri Valley honors twice. Scaife, who spent his collegiate career playing at Hard Rock Stadium, saw starts at guard and tackle, earning second-team All-ACC honors once.

It’s unclear what Miami’s coaching staff saw in just two practices to warrant moving on, but they acted swiftly, and now have four roster spots until they reach their 90-man limit.

With the current status of the offensive line, the Dolphins should probably still look to invest in the trenches somehow. Perhaps one of the various try-out players can earn a contract after the completion of rookie minicamp.

Michigan State football OT Jarrett Horst signs with the Miami Dolphins as an UDFA

Michigan State OT Jarrett Horst signs with the Miami Dolphins as an UDFA

There is no question that former Michigan State football offensive tackle Jarrett Horst is extremely talented. Now, the former Arkansas State tackle who transferred to the Spartans will get the chance to show what he can at the next level, as he will be heading to the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent with hopes to make their final roster.

This comes a few months after Horst was taken No. 1 overall in the USFL draft. As mentioned, Horst is extremely talented, although some issues with penalties and mental mistakes probably held him back a little. If he can improve in that area, he could have a nice NFL career ahead of him.

Michigan State football LT Jarrett Horst back for 2022 season

LT Jarrett Horst will be back in 2022 for Michigan State

Another huge return has been announced for Michigan State as left tackle Jarrett Horst is set to return for the 2022 season. Horst joins Jayden Reed, Xavier Henderson and Ronald Williams in announcing their returns to the program for 2022.

Horst, a transfer from Arkansas State, had a very strong start to the 2021 season, solidifying the left side of the line of scrimmage for MSU. Following the Michigan game, Horst was not seen in uniform until the Peach Bowl, many speculating mental health reasons. Seeing Horst gearing up to get ready for the 2022 season is amazing to see for Spartan fans for a multitude of reasons, both on and off the field.

Horst will be able to bring a strong veteran presence to an offensive line that is losing a lot of experience.

As Horst prepares for his first season in the Big Ten, he has been named to the Outland Trophy watch list. The Outland Trophy is given out to the nation’s best lineman, both offensive or defensive.

Which Spartans are most likely to be drafted next year

After 80 years of having a player drafted into the NFL, the 2021 draft saw no Spartans selected for the first time since 1940.

The streak ended. After 80 years of having a player drafted into the NFL, the 2021 draft saw no Spartans selected for the first time since 1940. Shakur Brown had the best chance to get drafted, but ultimately ended up going undrafted.

Now this upcoming football season can set the precedent for starting a new draft streak. Let’s take a look at the players with the best chances to get drafted next season:

Report: Michigan State Football beat out Oklahoma for transfer Jarrett Horst

Arkansas State OL transfer Jarrett Horst was a highly sought after target within the transfer portal. MSU beat out Oklahoma for his talents.

Mel Tucker and his staff came into East Lansing being known as ace recruiters. It was going to be a new approach to the Spartan football program. After a solid 2021 recruiting cycle, Tucker and staff took to the transfer portal to help transform the roster into what they seem fit.

The staff acquired some big names through the portal, and many could be key contributors in the years ahead. Arkansas State offensive line transfer Jarrett Horst is someone who is on the list of huge additions to the Spartan program.

According to a report from Matt Wenzel and Mlive the Spartans beat out Oklahoma, twice, to earn the commitment of Horst. Fighting with the Sooners to the finish line, but Michigan State came out on top.

Beating out one of the nation’s best-recruiting programs is something for Spartan fans to hang their hats on and could be a very telling sign of the future for Mel Tucker and Michigan State.

It is also reported Michigan State has nine spots left for summer enrollees so be sure to look out for more transfers or late signing day recruits.

MSU Football Transfer Tracker: Every incoming and outgoing transfer

So far 12 Spartans have entered the NCAA transfer portal. The Spartans have also gotten three players from the transfer portal so far.

Mel Tucker promised to overhaul the MSU roster through multiple channels, and we have seen that in spades this month as the transfers are starting to pile up for Michigan State football.

The portal has been both an avenue for MSU to find new players and for some of their players who are no longer a fit under Tucker’s new vision to find new homes. At this time, 13 Spartans have entered the NCAA transfer portal to seek new schools. Conversely, the Spartans have also received three players, all likely starters, from the transfer portal.

Let’s review who is leaving and coming to Michigan State:

Michigan State Football head coach Mel Tucker promised that the team would be aggressive in their roster overhaul and utilize the transfer portal to rebuild the team quickly, and that has been evident this week.

Mel Tucker already landed Auburn running back Harold Joiner and Temple quarterback Anthony Russo, and now they have found a new starting offensive tackle in former Arkansas State lineman Jarrett Horst.

Make no mistake, this is a huge pickup for the Spartans. The 6’6″, 305-pound Horst had multiple suitors competing with MSU to land the talented tackle, and Tucker was able to out-recruit schools like Texas, Oklahoma, Baylor and more to land him.

Here are some highlights of MSU’s new tackle:
