USFL set for its first College Football Draft

Are you ready for a draft of college football players in February? The USFL thinks everyone is and is conducting one.

The USFL doesn’t want to be upstaged by the XFL’s third debut.

Another fledgling football league is conducting its first college draft on Tuesday and the Michigan Panthers, who finished 1-8 in 2022, will have the first pick.

They earned that by beating Pittsburgh Mailers, who also finished 1-8.

To be eligible, players must have been out of high school for at least three years and have waived or exhausted their remaining college eligibility. One exception to this rule is that all Junior College players can request USFL draft eligibility once they are two years out of high school and have not enrolled in a four-year college.

“We are building the USFL for long-term success and our first-ever College Draft demonstrates our clear focus on building winning teams for Season 2, Season 3, and beyond,” said Daryl Johnston, Executive Vice President of Football Operations. “The USFL will continue to search for and evaluate the best players to join our league. We are excited to see who the next KaVontae Turpin will be to turn an opportunity with the USFL into a springboard for success in the NFL.”

How is each Big Ten team represented in the new USFL?

How is each Big Ten team represented in the new USFL? #GoBucks #USFL

The United States Football League has resurrected and completed its inaugural draft on Tuesday and Wednesday. Only time will tell how much success the USFL will have this time around, but I for one am extremely excited to see so many young men get another opportunity to chase their dreams.

Despite the draft’s funky positional format, I had a blast watching and seeing some memorable names come across my phone (the draft was not televised). We have talked at length about the former Ohio State Buckeyes joining the league, but I wanted to break down each player from each Big Ten team that was drafted as well.

17 players chosen in USFL Draft who spent time with Dolphins

How many names do you recognize?

The USFL Draft took place earlier this week, and the rosters of the six teams are now set. This version of the league, which comes over 35 years after the original USFL ceased operations, is hoping to become one that actually sticks around unlike the AAF and XFL in recent years that have come and gone.

Throughout their 35-round draft, USFL teams chose from a pool of players that was unreleased to the public prior to the event. After it was all said and done, 17 players who spent at least some time with the Dolphins found themselves on a team.

Birmingham Stallions

LB Terrill Hanks – 2019 undrafted free agent signed by Miami, who spent all of his rookie year on the practice squad. Signed to a futures deal but was waived in April 2020.

Growing up in Pelham, Ala., Dabo Swinney became a fan of the Birmingham Stallions, a franchise in the United States Football League that competed in all three USFL seasons from 1983-85.

Now that a new version of the USFL is back and so are the Birmingham Stallions, that’s who Swinney will be rooting for after the 2022 USFL season kicks off April 16.

Clemson’s head coach showed his support for the Stallions earlier this week, welcoming former Florida International quarterback Alex McGough to the team when he was selected by the Stallions with the sixth overall pick in the first round of the inaugural USFL Draft on Tuesday night in Birmingham.

“Man, I am so excited about the Birmingham Stallions,” Swinney said in a video from the USFL’s official Twitter account. “Growing up south of Birmingham, no pro sports, the Birmingham Stallions became my pro team. So, I’m really, really excited to see them come back to Birmingham, and it’s such an honor and a privilege to be able to announce the first-round draft pick and the quarterback for the Birmingham Stallions, Alex McGough. Alex, welcome to the team, and go Stallions!”

13 players who spent time with Cardinals selected in USFL draft

The eight-team USFL selected 13 former Cardinals players in their 35-round draft. Two former Cardinals draft picks were selected.

The USFL completed the second day of their two-day, 35-round player draft on Wednesday. The eight-team league hopes to capture the football-hungry audience with its season scheduled from April to July.

It gives players who have not been able to make it in the NFL a chance to play professionally and perhaps show enough to warrant another shot on an NFL roster.

On the first day and first 12 rounds of their draft, eight former Arizona Cardinals players, most of whom spent very little time with the team, were drafted by USFL teams.

Over the two days and 35 rounds, a total of 13 players who spent time with the Cardinals were selected.

We run down each player below.

Two former Longhorns selected in the USFL draft

The professional football dream lives on for two former Longhorns.

Two former Longhorns have a prime opportunity to play football at the professional level after Tuesday’s USFL draft.

What is the USFL you ask? It’s known as the United States Football League, which is a revamped version of the 1985 league that gives athletes a chance to continue their playing career while also having a goal of making them more well rounded individuals.

Players and even the staff members will be compensated for partaking in football obviously, but also have a chance to obtain a college degree through Strategic Education’s Capella University and Strayer University. The season itself is just 10 games with two additional playoff weeks.

Former Longhorns Brennan Eagles and Davante Davis were selected in the draft. This draft is a tad different than the NFL, as there a total of 35 rounds, but in each round the eight teams have to chose a specified position. For example, the first round consisted of only quarterbacks being taken.

Starting with Eagles, who decided to forgo his senior year at Texas to declare for the 2020 NFL draft, was selected by the Philadelphia Stars in the 15th round. Eagles went undrafted by the NFL, and had a brief stint with the Cowboys prior to being cut. As a Longhorn he racked up 61 catches for over 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Davis was taken in the ninth round by the Tampa Bay Bandits. He, similar to Eagles, went undrafted and was signed as a free agent by the Seattle Seahawks. He was placed on injured reserved and eventually waived by Seattle.

This league gives both Eagles and Davis a chance to show out, and maybe get back on the radar of an NFL team.

13 players chosen in USFL Draft who spent time with Raiders

13 former Raiders chosen in USFL Draft

The USFL Draft is now complete. The new version of this old league is hoping to succeed where so many others — including it’s former version — have failed. And today they set out to fill the rosters of their eight-team league with a 35-round draft.

Among those selected in this draft were ten players who once spent time with the Raiders, either on the active roster, practice squad, or on the offseason roster.

Birmingham Stallions

OL Cameron Hunt – 2019 undrafted free agent with Raiders. Waived/injured prior to the season.

P Colby Wadman – 2018 signed as a free agent with Raiders. Cut two months later. Played 2018-19 with the Broncos.

Houston Gamblers

LB Azeem Victor – 2018 6th round draft choice by Raiders. Didn’t make the roster out of camp.

Michigan Panthers

WR Jeff Badet – Signed with Raiders practice squad November 2021.

New Jersey Generals

CB De’Vante Bausby – Spent part of 2021 camp with Raiders.

S Shalom Luani – 2017 7th round pick by Raiders. The man Reggie McKenzie called a “Football Playing Jessie”. Spent one season with the Raiders before being traded to the Seahawks. Played one season there and another with the Chargers.

New Orleans Breakers

QB Kyle Sloter – 2021 reserve/future signing by Raiders. Spent the 2021 season on the Raiders practice squad. Was signed by the Vikings on December 29.

DT Shakir Soto – Late 2018 season practice squad addition by Raiders. Re-signed to reserve/future contract. Waived in final 2019 roster cuts.

Philadelphia Stars

LB Te’Von Coney – 2019 undrafted free agent signing by Raiders. Waived in final roster cuts. Signed to practice squad late in the season. Re-signed to reserve/future deal in January, cut in May. Spent part of 2021 camp with the Raiders.

Pittsburgh Maulers

OL Vadal Alexander – 2016 7th round pick by Raiders. Spent two seasons with the Raiders, appearing in 24 games with nine starts. Suspended four games for PED violation in 2018, placed on reserve/failed to report list.

RB Garrett Groshek – 2021 undrafted free agent signing by Raiders. Waived in final roster cuts.

Tampa Bay Bandits

RB BJ Emmons – Signed just prior to 2021 training camp. Waived in final roster cuts. Signed to the practice squad and was released five days later.

S Obi Melifonwu – 2017 round two pick by Raiders. Played five games for the Raiders as a rookie. Placed on IR prior to the 2018 season then released with an injury settlement. Later signed with the Patriots. Played two games in New England.
