Former MSU football QB Anthony Russo getting pro football opportunity

Anthony Russo is getting an opportunity to play in the XFL in 2023:

Anthony Russo transferred to Michigan State from Temple ahead of the 2021 season. While many expected Russo to lead the Spartans into 2021, he unfortunately lost the camp battle to Payton Thorne.

Albeit a backup in 2021, Russo was a great presence around the team and fanbase throughout Michigan State’s 2021 season, and is still widely supported by the Michigan State fanbase.

Now, the Spartan fans will have a chance to cheer for Russo at the professional level.

Russo was featured on the San Antonio Brahmas roster for the 2023 season in the XFL.

Michigan State football QB Anthony Russo wins Tropical Bowl MVP

Anthony Russo went off in the Tropical Bowl

Anthony Russo transferred to Michigan State from Temple prior to the 2021 football season. Russo was the presumable favorite to win the starting job, but ultimately lost the battle in training camp to Payton Thorne. Russo didn’t take the backup role lightly and made sure to provide a strong veteran presence in the QB room for the offense.

Following the conclusion of the season, Russo was invited to participate in the Tropical Bowl, an exposure all-star game event for collegiate seniors to showcase their skills in front of NFL, CFL, XFL and USFL professional scouts in hopes to continue playing at the next level.

At the conclusion of the showcase week, Russo was given the honor as the game’s overall MVP.

Michigan State football: QB situation still not settled

Michigan State’s QB battle is neck and neck

It is no secret that Michigan State has a huge quarterback competition going on as fall camp is in full swing. Graduate transfer Anthony Russo and redshirt sophomore Payton Thorne are squaring off to be the Spartans starting QB.

MSU held their first in house scrimmage this past Saturday, where reports said that both quarterbacks played well.

It seems to be a neck and neck race for the starting gig, and both guys are making a case to win the job.

Offensive coordinator Jay Johnson talked about how close of a race it has been, and how the staff hasn’t ruled out using two quarterbacks to start the season.

In a perfect world, someone will set themselves apart by the time the Northwestern opener rolls around.

To play in the senior bowl you need to be selected by the senior bowl committee, which usually means having a good senior season.

In a preseason watchlist, five members of the Spartans team were recognized. QB Anthony Russo and offensive lineman AJ Arcuri, Matt Allen, Blake Bueter, and Kevin Jarvis were all named to the list.
