2022 Giants free agency: Contract details for new players

A breakdown of the contracts the New York Giants have handed out to free agents, as well as details of restructures and pay cuts.

The New York Giants and general manager Joe Schoen entered the new league year and free agency with very little money to spend. The idea was to clear upwards of $40 million in salary cap space while hunting for bargains on the open market.

Through a week and a half, the Giants have fared relatively well. They’ve been unable to trade either cornerback James Bradberry or running back Saquon Barkley, but they’ve found other ways to clear room.

New York has also added a number of new contracts, including multiple offensive linemen. But only one of them was a big-ish money signing.

Here’s a quick look at the basic contracts for all new signees, as well as some information on restructures and pay cuts.

Note: New details will be added as they become available.

Giants re-sign CB Jarren Williams, will not tender Jake Fromm

The New York Giants have tendered CB Jarren Williams but will not tender QB Jake Fromm, who becomes an unrestricted free agent.

The New York Giants continued to forge their 2022 roster with under-the-radar moves on Wednesday with the re-signing of defensive back Jarren Williams, who was an exclusive rights free agent this spring.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Williams, 24, was signed by the Giants back in August 2020 after being waived by the Arizona Cardinals, who signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Albany that spring.

Williams has spent most of his two seasons with the Giants on the practice squad. He was active for two games in 2020 and eight games last season. He has 19 total tackles in his short NFL career.

In other roster news, the Giants have chosen not to tender quarterback Jake Fromm.

The Giants don’t need to carry Fromm going forward. They are bringing in two other quarterbacks in Tyrod Taylor and Davis Webb and still have Brian Lewerke, who assigned to reserves/future deal in January.

Giants-Bears Week 17: Offense, defense and special teams snap counts

The New York Giants lost their Week 17 game against the Chicago Bears. Here are the snap counts on offense, defense and special teams.

The New York Giants had the doors blown off them in Week 17, falling to the Chicago Bears by a score of 29-3 at Soldier Field. It was a game that ended (for the Giants) after the very first play.

It was a new low for the Giants. And that’s saying something considering how poorly the 2021 regular season has gone. Unfortunately, they’ll have one more opportunity to outdo themselves in Week 18 against the Washington Football Team.

But before we look ahead, let’s look back. Here are the snap counts that contributed to the Giants’ latest humiliation.

Offensive snaps: 56
Defensive snaps: 66
Special teams snaps: 23

The Giants did a lot of rotating along the offensive line on Sunday — specifically at left guard where Wes Martin and Ben Bredeson platooned. They also frequently used a jumbo package with Derrick Kelly serving as an extra blocker.

Defensively, with Adoree’ Jackson back in action, Jarren Williams saw a significantly reduced role. Jaylon Smith also appears to be taking snaps away from other linebackers — he took 70% of all defensive snaps.

Logan Ryan, James Bradberry were highest-graded Giants in Week 16

Logan Ryan and James Bradberry were the highest-graded New York Giants in Week 16, and Devontae Booker graded out well, too.

The New York Giants were completely dismantled by the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 16. The final score of 34-10 does not properly explain just how poorly the Giants played across the board.

But, as usual, there were at least a few needles in the haystack; a few players who performed at a higher level than their teammates.

Safety Logan Ryan was one of those players, earning a team-high grade of 80.5 courtesy of Pro Football Focus. He was followed closely by cornerbacks James Bradberry (75.1) and Jarren Williams (74.4).

Other notable defensive grades include linebacker Lorenzo Carter (66.5), defensive lineman Leonard Williams (60.8) and linebacker Jaylon Smith (52.8).

The lowest-graded Giants on defense were defensive lineman Raymond Johnson III (26.7) and linebacker Benardrick McKinney (25.2).

On the other side of the football, running back Devontae Booker led the way with a grade of 70.4. Behind Booker were wide receiver Kadarius Toney (69.0), right guard Will Hernandez (66.3) and left tackle Andrew Thomas (66.0).

Other notable offensive grades include running back Saquon Barkley (58.8), tight end Evan Engram (58.2) and wide receiver Kenny Golladay (55.8).

The lowest-graded Giants on offense were quarterbacks Mike Glennon (40.0) and Jake Fromm (34.2).

Rookie linebacker Elerson Smith earned the team’s highest special teams grade (91.1).

Giants officially eliminated from playoffs with 34-10 loss to Eagles

What limited playoff hope remained entering Week 16 was quickly forgotten as the Eagles completely dismantled the New York Giants on Sunday.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbx61yex5whq8aq player_id=none image=https://giantswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The New York Giants entered Week 16 with personnel issues due to injury, illness and inconsistency. As a result, they decided to give quarterback Jake Fromm his first career start.

That lasted a little more than two quarters.

Fromm completed just six of his 17 passes for 25 yards and one interception before being benched in favor of Mike Glennon.

It was an unforgettable first start for Fromm, but that was par for the course on Sunday. The Giants and Eagles combined to play one of the most sloppy, ugly football games in recent memory.

Philly, however, got things together in the second half and were ultimately able to cruise to a 34-10 victory, officially ending the Giants’ remaining playoff hopes.

With the loss, the Giants fall to 4-11 on the season.

Lorenzo Carter, Andrew Thomas were highest-graded Giants in Week 15

Lorenzo Carter and Andrew Thomas earned the New York Giants’ highest grades in a Week 15 loss to the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium.

The New York Giants were embarrassed once again on Sunday, falling to the Dallas Cowboys, 21-6, and dropping their record to 4-10 on the season.

There’s a lot to dislike about the current direction of the franchise, but not everything is shrouded in negativity. Ironically, one of the most encouraging things about the 2021 Giants comes on the offensive side of the ball.

After a terrible rookie season, offensive tackle Andrew Thomas is playing lights out in his second year. And in Week 15, he led the Giants’ offense with an 83.7 overall grade from Pro Football Focus (min. 10 snaps).

Just behind Thomas were quarterback Jake Fromm (78.7), center Billy Price (74.1) and right tackle Nate Solder (68.4).

Other notable offensive grades include wide receiver Kenny Golladay (64.0), running back Devontae Booker (63.1) and running back Saquon Barkley (53.2).

The lowest-graded Giants on offense were right guard Will Hernandez (46.2) and quarterback Mike Glennon (41.0).

Defensively, the Giants were led by linebacker Lorenzo Carter, who arguably played the best game of his career. He recorded an overall grade of 90.8, which topped the team.

Checking in just behind Carter were cornerback Jarren Williams (82.0), defensive lineman Leonard Williams (76.6) and linebacker Jaylon Smith (73.7).

Other notable defensive grades include cornerback James Bradberry (65.8), linebacker Azeez Ojulari (60.2) and safety Logan Ryan (54.0).

The lowest-graded Giants on defense were linebackers Reggie Ragland (35.8) and Benardrick McKinney (29.9).

Ragland, however, recorded the team’s highest special teams grade (76.5).

The New York Giants made a series of roster moves on Saturday as they continue dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak while also preparing for the Dallas Cowboys.

Safety Xavier McKinney has been activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list after testing out of protocols. He is expected to start on Sunday.

The Giants also elevated three players from the practice squad as COVID-19 replacements: cornerback Jarren Williams, wide receiver Alex Bachman and recently signed linebacker Jaylon Smith.

Additionally, the Giants have re-signed Sam Beal to the practice squad.

Beal, who was a third-round supplemental draft pick in 2018, was waived in early November after his career failed to take off in East Rutherford. A return seemed highly unlikely, but COVID-19 and flu outbreaks clearly changed some plans.

Finally, defensive back Quincy Wilson has been waived off of injured reserve with an injury settlement.

Giants sign Woodrow Hamilton to practice squad, protect four

The New York Giants have made a few practice squad transactions and protected four ahead of a Week 15 game against the Dallas Cowboys.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbx61yex5whq8aq player_id=none image=https://giantswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The New York Giants announced on Tuesday that they have re-signed defensive tackle Woodrow Hamilton to their practice squad. He had previously been released back in late October.

The 28-year-old Hamilton, who signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted rookie out of Ole Miss in 2016, is now in his third stint with the Giants. After starting his career with the Pats, he landed with the New Orleans Saints (2017-2018) before having a brief cup of coffee with New York in 2018.

The 6-foot-3, 315-pound Hamilton also had stints with the Carolina Panthers (2019-2020) and Tennessee Titans (2021).

Hamilton won a title alongside current Giants head coach Joe Judge in 2017, each of whom were with the Patriots at the time.

Over his six-year NFL career, Hamilton has appeared in nine games (one start) and recorded six tackles (three solo) and one fumble recovery.

In order to clear space for Hamilton on the practice squad, the Giants terminated the contract of quarterback Clayton Thorson. He had been signed last week as emergency depth.

Finally, the Giants protected four practice squad players: wide receiver/return man Pharoh Cooper, defensive lineman David Moa and defensive backs Jarren Williams and Natrell Jamerson.

Giants place Kadarius Toney on Reserve/COVID-19 list

The New York Giants have placed rookie WR Kadarius Toney on the Reserve/COVID-19 list for the second time this season.

New York Giants rookie wide receiver Kadarius Toney has not played since November 22 and now there’s a chance he won’t play in Week 15, either.

The Giants have placed Toney on the Reserve/COVID-19 list for the second time this season. That means he will miss a minimum of 10 days if he’s unvaccinated. If he has been vaccinated, he will have to produce two negative tests at least 24 hours apart before he’s eligible to return.

Sports Illustrated reports that Toney’s test result came back while on the team plane. He was immediately isolated from his teammates and coaches while en route back to New Jersey from Los Angeles.

According to a source, the receiver, who returned with the rest of the team from Los Angeles on Monday, tested positive for the virus, the results of his test not being known until the team was en route back east.

Toney was immediately isolated from the rest of the team on the plane, the Giants taking the necessary precautions with the rest of their traveling party.

Toney, who is also nursing an oblique injury, has missed four games this season.

Meanwhile, offensive tackle Kyle Murphy was removed from the Reserve/COVID-19 list. However, he remains on injured reserve with an ankle issue.

Finally, return man Pharoh Cooper and cornerback Jarren Williams were each returned to the practice squad as a matter of procedure.

Giants fall to Chargers: Winners, losers and those in between

Here are the winners, losers and those in between from the New York Giants’ Week 14 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

The New York Giants convened in Arizona this week in hopes of resetting and then coming out strong against the Los Angeles Chargers.

That did not happen.

One week removed from what many considered their worst performance of the year, the Giants did everything they could to top it. They were blown out of the water from the opening whistle and any success they did have came as the result of desperation and cleanup.

If there were any questions remaining about jobs being on the line, they were answered in Week 14. Brace yourselves for yet another rebuild, Giants fans.

Here’s a look at the winners and losers (and those in between) from Sunday’s latest embarrassment.
