The New York Giants on Saturday announced the elevation of two practice squad players: return man Pharoh Cooper and cornerback Jarren Williams.

The Giants signed Cooper to the practice squad in November and elevated him in each of the previous four games. He has served as their return man, returning four kicks for 67 yards and six punts for 57 yards. He’s also hauled in three receptions for 27 yards, and rushed once for three yards.

Cooper will serve as a COVID-19 replacement for offensive lineman Wes Martin.

Williams, meanwhile, is a standard elevation.

After going undrafted out of Albany in 2020, Williams briefly signed with the Arizona Cardinals before joining the Giants last August. He has spent time on both the practice squad and active roster.

Williams was placed on injured reserve just prior to final cuts earlier this year and later waived with an injury settlement. He was re-signed to the practice squad in late September.

In one game this season, Williams recorded three tackles and surrendered just one reception on five targets.

Austin Johnson, Azeez Ojulari were highest-graded Giants in Week 13

New York Giants DT Austin Johnson and LB Azeez Ojulari earned the team’s highest PFF grades in a Week 13 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

The New York Giants hit a low point on Sunday during a 20-9 loss to the Miami Dolphins, and that’s saying something. But their offense managed just three field goals, failing to score a touchdown for the first time this season.

Their end-of-half struggles also continued, while an over-worked defense faded at times.

Understandably, their Pro Football Focus grades for Week 13 are not great. And on the offensive side of the ball, the team saw some of their lowest collective grades of 2021.

Leading the way on offense was left tackle Andrew Thomas, who earned an overall grade of 72.1. He was followed by running back Devontae Booker (70.9) and tight end Evan Engram (70.0).

Other notable offensive grades include wide receiver Kenny Golladay (66.0), guard Ben Bredeson (60.3) and running back Saquon Barkley (45.3).

The lowest-graded Giants on offense were quarterback Mike Glennon (40.9) and guard Matt Skura (40.8).

New York saw much better grades on defense, led by defensive tackle Austin Johnson (83.3). He was followed by rookie edge rusher Azeez Ojulari (82.5) and linebacker Benardrick McKinney (79.3).

Other notable defensive grades include linebacker Quincy Roche (75.8), safety Logan Ryan (65.6) and rookie cornerback Aaron Robinson (60.4).

The lowest-graded Giants on defense were cornerback James Bradberry (45.4) and defensive end Raymond Johnson (33.7).

Cornerback Jarren Williams led the special teams unit with a grade of 74.7.

Giants protect Pharoh Cooper and three others

The New York Giants have protected WR/KR Pharoh Cooper and three other practice squad players ahead of a Week 13 game against Miami.

The New York Giants have announced their practice squad protections ahead of a Week 13 game with the Miami Dolphins and wide receiver/return man Pharoh Cooper was once again among the four.

The Giants signed Cooper to the practice squad in November and elevated him in each of the previous three games. He has served as their return man, returning four kicks for 67 yards and three punts for 35 yards. He’s also hauled in one reception for six yards, and rushed once for three yards.

Cooper is a lock to be elevated again on Sunday afternoon and serve as the team’s starting returner.

In addition to Cooper, the Giants also protected defensive backs Steven Parker and Jarren Williams, and defensive lineman David Moa.

Does this look and sound familiar? It’s because the same four were protected in Week 12.

For Moa, this will be the 10th time this season he’s been protected by the Giants. Parker and Williams are each being protected for the fourth time this season.

With cornerback Danray Holmes (ribs) on injured reserve, expect Parker to be elevated once again on Sunday.

Giants protect Pharoh Cooper, three others

The New York Giants have protected return man Pharoh Cooper and three other members of their practice squad.

The New York Giants have announced their practice squad protections ahead of a Week 12 game with the Philadelphia Eagles and wide receiver/return man Pharoh Cooper was among the four.

The Giants signed Cooper to the practice squad earlier this month and elevated him in each of the previous two games. He served as their return man, returning three kicks for 45 yards and two punts for 26 yards.

Cooper is likely to be elevated again on Sunday afternoon and serve as the team’s starting returner.

In addition to Cooper, the Giants also protected defensive backs Steven Parker and Jarren Williams, and defensive lineman David Moa.

For Moa, this will be the ninth time this season he’s been protected by the Giants. Parker and Williams are each being protected for the third time this season.

With Logan Ryan still on the Reserve/COVID-19 list and Adoree’ Jackson a little banged up, Parker and Williams could be eyed as potential practice squad elevations in Week 12.

The New York Giants have announced their practice squad protections ahead of a Week 11 game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and wide receiver/return man Pharoh Cooper was among the four.

The Giants signed Cooper to the practice squad earlier this month and elevated him for a Week 9 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. He served as their return man, returning three kicks for 45 yards and two punts for 26 yards.

Cooper is likely to be elevated again on Monday night and serve as the team’s starting returner.

In addition to Cooper, the Giants also protected tight end Chris Myarick, linebacker Trent Harris and cornerback Jarren Williams.

Harris has been a protection and elevation over the previous two weeks (bye week excluded) and like Cooper, is an expected elevation in Week 11.

Williams is a second-time protection this season. With the Buccaneers thin at cornerback, the Giants are likely just using an abundance of caution.

Finally, Myarick has been protected for the fifth time this season.

Giants protect David Sills, three others

The New York Giants have protected WR David Sills, LB Trent Harris and two other practice squad players.

The New York Giants have announced their practice squad protections ahead of a Week 9 game with the Las Vegas Raiders and wide receiver David Sills was among the four.

Sills has bounced around a bit this year, joining the Giants’ 53-man roster at one point before being waived and then re-signed to the practice squad. He’ll likely be a Sunday elevation with Sterling Shepard expected to miss time and other receivers banged up.

In addition to Sills, the Giants also protected linebacker Trent Harris, defensive back Jarren Williams and cornerback Ka’dar Hollman.

Harris was both a protection and an elevation a week ago. He is an elevation candidate in Week 9 as well. Meanwhile, Williams and Hollman are both first-time protections this season.

This is the first week all year that defensive lineman David Moa has not been protected.

Giants’ Jarren Williams, Clayton Thorson revert to IR

After going unclaimed on waivers, New York Giants DB Jarren Williams (quad) and QB Clayton Thorson (concussion) revert to injured reserve.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbx61yex5whq8aq player_id=none image=https://giantswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

In separate transactions, the New York Giants waived/injured both cornerback Jarren Williams (quad) and quarterback Clayton Thorson (concussion) this week.

Unsurprisingly, each player cleared through waivers and reverted back to the Giants’ injured reserve list.

[lawrence-related id=672974,672972,672970]

Both Williams and Thorson are eligible for injury settlements but could, potentially, remain on IR for the duration of the season.

The 24-year-old Williams signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted rookie out of Albany last April before landing with the Giants four months later. He spent most of the 2020 season on the team’s practice squad but was elevated to the active roster for a couple games in December.

In two career games, Williams has taken 17 special teams snaps and recorded two tackles.

Thorson, 26, was originally a fifth-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2019 NFL draft. He was released as a part of final cuts that season and then promptly signed to the Dallas Cowboys practice squad, where he’d remain until September of 2020.

After being waived by the Cowboys, he was signed to the Giants’ practice squad and eventually promoted to the active roster for two games in December. He did not make an appearance in either game.

Giants release Alfred Morris and Chris Milton

The New York Giants have terminated the contracts of RB Alfred Morris and DB Chris Milton, and placed CB Jarren Williams on injured reserve.

The New York Giants reached the NFL’s 85-man roster limit on Tuesday following their latest series of transactions.

Running back Alfred Morris, who was re-signed back on August 2, and defensive back Chris Milton have had their contracts terminated.

[listicle id=672860]

Morris, 32, was a sixth-round pick of the Washington Football Team in the 2012 NFL draft. He remained with the team for four seasons before spending two years with the Dallas Cowboys, one year with the San Francisco 49ers and splitting time between the Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals in 2019.

In September of 2020, the Giants signed Morris to their practice squad before promoting him to the active roster in November.

In 2020 with the Giants, Morris appeared in nine games, rushing for 238 yards and one touchdown while adding 19 yards and one touchdown on three receptions.

Milton, 28, originally signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted rookie out of Georgia in 2016. After three years with the Colts, he was claimed off of waivers by the Tennessee Titans in 2019. In March of this year, he signed with the Giants.

Over his five-year NFL career, Milton has appeared in 55 games (one start), recording 36 tackles, two fumble recoveries and two passes defensed.

Finally, the Giants placed cornerback Jarren Williams on injured reserve with a quad injury. He will miss the season.

Giants vs. Cardinals: Statistics, numbers and broken records

The New York Giants fell to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 14 and here’s a look at some of the statistics, numbers and broken records.

One week removed from an impressive upset of the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field, the New York Giants laid an egg against the Arizona Cardinals at home and cost themselves the NFC East lead.

It was an ugly performance from the jump, and no one — not a single coach or player — should escape the crosshairs. It was one of New York’s worst performances of the season and ushers in some genuine concern about the team.

Here’s a look at all the noteworthy stats to come from the Week 14 loss:

  • The 19-point margin of defeat was the second-worst for the Giants this season (36-9, San Francisco in Week 4).
  • The Giants’ seven points were their lowest offensive output since December 16, 2018 (17-0, Tennessee Titans).
  • The Giants’ 159 yards of total offense was their lowest output since September 22, 2013 (150 yards vs. Carolina Panthers).
  • New York managed just 81 net yards passing, their lowest total since October 28, 2007 (49 vs. Miami Dolphins).
  • The Giants surrendered eight sacks against the Cardinals, their highest total since October 20, 2018 (Arizona, 8).
  • The Giants’ 10 first downs were their fewest since October 10, 2019 (10 vs. New England Patriots).
  • Dion Lewis’ fumble on second-quarter kickoff return was New York’s first special teams turnover of the season.
  • The Giants have not scored any first-half points in back-to-back games for the first time since 2016.
  • Daniel Jones had just 11 completions in Week 14, the lowest total of his NFL career.
  • Jones did not attempt a rush for the first time in his career.
  • Cardinals linebacker Haason Reddick recorded five sacks on Sunday, the most by any Giants opponent in franchise history.
  • Rookie safety Xavier McKinney made his first career start.
  • Rookie defensive back Jarren Williams made his NFL debut.

See it: Giants players wearing Ring of Honor jerseys in practice

Several New York Giants players took to the field in Ring of Honor jerseys on Wednesday, honoring those that came before them.

The New York Giants returned from their bye on Monday and held their first full team practice on Wednesday, which came with a pretty interesting and unique twist.

In something we can not recall ever seeing before, several Giants players were allowed to practice wearing the jerseys of those who had been enshrined in the Ring of Honor.

Quarterback Colt McCoy donned the No. 16 jersey belonging to Frank Gifford, while cornerback Jarren Williams wore Mel Hein’s No. 7 and rookie linebacker Carter Coughlin wore Lawrence Taylor’s forever infamous No. 56.

Only a specific group of players — “Practice Players of Week 10” — were eligible to wear these unique jerseys and it’s safe to say they all made solid choices.

This is just another clever way head coach Joe Judge educates his players on the history of the New York Giants and incorporates that history into everyday life in East Rutherford.
