Eagles to sign QB Will Grier to a 1-year deal

The Philadelphia Eagles are signing quarterback Will Grier to a one-year deal

The Eagles are adding another quarterback to the roster, as Adam Schefter reports the team is signing veteran Will Grier.

Grier, who will turn 29 next month, has not seen the field for regular-season action since 2019 in Carolina.

Grier spent two seasons in Dallas working with new Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier.

The Cowboys claimed Grier off waivers in September 2021, but he was not active for any games. In 2022, Grier was signed back to the Dallas practice squad after being waived in August and then signed to the active roster in October. Last year he had brief stints on the rosters of the Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots and Los Angeles Chargers.

A solid player at West Virginia, Grier entered the NFL as a third-round pick (No. 100 overall) by the Carolina Panthers in the 2019 NFL draft. He was the fifth quarterback selected in that draft.

Where do the Eagles rank in spending at each position after first wave of free agency?

We’re looking at where the Philadelphia Eagles rank in positional spending at each position after the first wave of NFL free agency

The Eagles have retooled their roster on both sides of the football after inking DE Bryce Huff, RB Saquon Barkley, OLB Zach Baun, OL Matt Hennessy, WR DeVante Parker, S/CB C.J. Gardner-Johnson, LB Devin White, LB Oren Burks, DT PJ Mustipher, WR Parris Campbell, and CB Tyler Hall to deals during the first wave.

Philadelphia then traded for quarterback Kenny Pickett while extending Landon Dickerson and Jake Elliott.

Philadelphia currently has about  $33,657,986 in cap space per Over The Cap, and they’re spending about $100+ million plus on both sides of the football.  The offensive line and edge rusher positions carry the most significant cap space.

Overall positional spending has changed tremendously since Jalen Hurts signed a massive five-year, $255 million contract extension last spring.

This makes him among the four highest-paid players on average in NFL history.

The Eagles will again be a Super Bowl favorite in the NFC and have one of the most talented rosters despite being 17th in average positional spending.

Thanks to Over The Cap, here’s where Philadelphia sits in positional spending on both sides of the ball ahead of the season opener.

Jalen Hurts pays for funeral of high school student killed by gunshot

Jalen Hurts will pay for the funeral expenses of Javon Coles, a North Shore High School football player who died after being shot.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts honored his native Houston home and a cross-town high school opponent in a touching gesture during a tragic situation.

Hurts will pay for the funeral expenses of Jarvon Coles, an 18-year-old football player at North Shore who died after being shot at a party on the night of March 9. Coles’ funeral will be held this coming Saturday.

NFL reporter Ian Rapoport quote-tweeted a post by KHOU 11 News Houston on social media platform X as he broke the news that Hurts would cover the expenses.

Coles was a two-time first-team all-district linebacker, had a 4.1 GPA, and was accepted into 15 colleges, his grandfather Braxton Coles told KHOU 11.

He also said Jarvon was planning to play football at Lamar University.

Hurts attended Channelview High School, a neighboring Houston school. The two have been called rivals in reporting by Rapoport and others, and while North Shore’s dominance has made it a one-sided rivalry, there was certainly more competition when Hurts was at the helm. In 2014, he threw for three touchdowns in a 49-48 win, Channelview’s only victory against the team since at least 2004, as far back as MaxPreps’ records go.

Hurts put the rivalry aside to honor a high school player whose time was cut short.

The Eagles’ infamous Tush Push is officially a legal play for the 2024 season, per NFL

Are you glad to see the Tush Push returning this season?

While the Philadelphia Eagles won’t have center Jason Kelce this upcoming season, they will have the Tush Push at their disposal.

The controversial quarterback sneak play will officially be back for next season for any team that wants to use it, as NFL executive Troy Vincent told reporters on Thursday (via ESPN’s Adam Schefter).

Schefter added that Vincent noted how well the Eagles run the play, which may or may not be the case without Kelce on the offensive line to help out quarterback Jalen Hurts on the formation.

With the Tush Push officially legal for 2024, NFL defenses will now have the rest of the offseason to figure out how to finally stop it.

WATCH: New Commanders TE Zach Ertz’s highlights

Zach Ertz comes to Washington with 709 career receptions and 46 touchdowns.

New Commanders tight end Zach Ertz comes to Washington with plenty of experience. A second-round pick in 2013, Ertz enters his 12th NFL season in 2024.

Washington fans know Ertz all too well. Having spent the first 8.5 seasons of his career with the Eagles, Ertz regularly caused matchup problems for the Commanders. Ertz has played 17 career games against Washington and has 93 receptions for 888 yards and three touchdowns. Ertz has three games against Washington in which he has caught 10 or more passes.

For his career, Ertz has 709 receptions for 7,434 yards and 46 touchdowns. After the Eagles traded him to the Arizona Cardinals in 2021, many believed his best days were behind him. But then Arizona head coach Kliff Kingsbury reignited Ertz’s career. Ertz was so effective under Kingsbury that he earned a two-year extension that offseason.

Now, Kingsbury is Washington’s offensive coordinator and, with a need at tight end, reunited with Ertz.

The Commanders are expected to select a quarterback at No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL draft. Ertz will be the perfect safety valve for a young quarterback. During his career, he has helped other young passers, such as Carson Wentz, Jalen Hurts and Kyler Murray.

Courtesy of the Commanders’ social media, let’s look at some of Ertz’s career highlights finding the end zone.

Ex-Steelers QB Kenny Pickett sounds like a quitter

The Steelers moved on from Kenny Pickett after he requested a trade.

Things didn’t work out between the Pittsburgh Steelers and new Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback Kenny Pickett. Pickett was the local hero and the Steelers first-round pick but after just two tumultuous seasons, Pickett is out and the Steelers have completely rebuilt their depth chart with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.

Pickett spoke to the media as a member of the Eagles this week and talked about how things ended with the Steelers and that fateful game last season where he reportedly refused to dress for the game as the team’s third quarterback.

“I just thought it was time,” Pickett said. “It felt like it was time from the things that transpired, and I wanted a chance to go somewhere else and continue to grow my career.”

Pickett reportedly asked for a trade shortly after he was informed that the team was signing Wilson as a free agent. He did this, presumably because he didn’t feel like he’d have a chance to compete for the starting job. Now he finds himself in Philadelphia where Jalen Hurts is one of the best quarterbacks in the league and he’s relegated to backup once again.

“I handled it the way I should’ve handled it,” Pickett went on. The more that comes out about this situation, the more it sounds like Pickett quit on his team last season and felt entitled to his job back after it. I’m glad the Steelers didn’t feel that same way and he is clearly a guy who couldn’t handle the idea of an earned demotion.
