Three takeaways from Texas’ Red River Rivalry loss to Oklahoma

It will be another year of the Sooners wearing the Golden Hat. Here are three takeaways from Texas’ Red River Shootout loss to Oklahoma:

Four the fourth time in four years, Tom Herman has dropped a game to Lincoln Riley and the Oklahoma Sooners. Doing it in a more stressful way than usual, it took four overtimes for the Longhorns to lose in Dallas.

Now, Texas will be two games behind in the Big 12 championship race while Oklahoma also had the tiebreaker. Herman’s goal since Day One has been to win the school’s first conference championship since 2009. He will now have an extreme uphill battle to do so.

The Sooners dominated most of the game until giving up 14 points with five minutes left. From there it was the Sam Ehlinger show, at least getting Texas into a position to win the game.

It will be another year of Oklahoma wearing the Golden Hat, despite fielding one of its worst teams of the century. The Longhorns will have serious soul searching to do before getting back onto the field against Baylor in two weeks.

Here are three takeaways from Texas’ Red River Shootout loss to Oklahoma:

Locked on Longhorns Podcast: ‘Sam Ehlinger’s last Red River Rivalry?’

The Locked on Longhorns Podcast breaks down Sam Ehlinger as he heads into what could be his final Texas-Oklahoma weekend matchup.

[jwplayer AntuLo7G]

The Locked on Longhorns Podcast kicks off the show with a discussion on Sam Ehlinger. Will this in fact be his last Texas-OU weekend matchup? Head coach Tom Herman jokingly stated “who said?” That was in response to a question about Ehlinger going into the final Red River Shootout game at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday. With the NCAA’s rule on college eligibility this year, seniors such as Ehlinger would have the opportunity to come back.

On Sunday’s practice the captain spoke about being disciplined and taking accountability to his team. Ehlinger obviously wants to win so what will it take for the Longhorns to get back on track on Saturday? Baker Mayfield decided to fire a shot regarding the rivalry, will there be any Longhorns who will chime in?

In the second segment the discusses switches to which Longhorns need to step up on Saturday. On offense it feels like it needs to be running backs and the wide receivers. Jake Smith returned to lead the team in receptions but if felt like it left some on the table. On the defensive side of the ball it falls on the pass rush and the linebackers. Texas is missing way too many tackles and it starts with the front seven defenders. Who are the dark horses who step up on Saturday?

With the Sooners on tap on Saturday, who will be the key matchups to watch? Oklahoma has a talented receiver in Charleston Rambo, which cornerback will need a big game to slow him down. Plus can Keondre Coburn win inside against Creed Humphrey? Plus Patrick and Cami lay out just how Texas wins this game against the rivals north of the river.

Texas wide out Jordan Whittington is expected to play against Oklahoma

The Longhorns are expecting to get some more help back on the offensive side of the ball. Wide receiver Jordan Whittington returns Saturday.

Last week the Texas Longhorns got a boost to the offense when they welcomed back slot receiver Jake Smith. He led the team in receptions and even scored a touchdown in the loss to Texas Christian. The offense has been the best unit on the team through three games but were shorthanded. Smith looks to have an even better game against the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Rivalry game on Saturday.

The other slot receiver and running back hybrid in Jordan Whittington is now expected to make his return against Oklahoma. Whittington injured himself in the opener against the UTEP Miners. With Smith and Whittington both down the team had to rely on walk on Kai Money and transfer Brendan Schooler. With Whittington back, the team gains another weapon for the offensive attack against the Sooners.

In his media session on Wednesday, offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich was asked about Whittington’s availability for the game. “We plan on him going and to what degree,” Yurcich continued “that will be determined.”

Given the injury concerns on with the running backs, Whittington could be used in that capacity as well. Bijan Robinson didn’t see the field except for one kickoff return against TCU and Roschon Johnson dinged up his shoulder. That left Keaontay Ingram as the lone healthy running back late in their last game. With Bijan back at practice and a healthier Roschon, the Longhorns can mix in Jordan a bit as well.

Against the Oklahoma Sooners the team needs all hands on deck for this one. It is hard to call a game in week four a “must win” but they really need this game. For confidence of the team and confidence in their head coach Tom Herman. The Longhorns can’t afford a second-straight conference loss when they are already behind three other teams in conference standings.

Texas Christian vs Texas: Halftime recap

The Texas Christian Horned Frogs took the lead heading into the half. The Longhorns couldn’t get anything going offensively.

The second quarter started off as rocky as the first quarter began with penalties. The Frogs driving as the first quarter ended. More penalties ensued. Linebacker Juwan Mitchell was ejected for targeting and TCU quarterback Max Duggan ran it in from five yards out to retake the lead 14-7.

On a third and 10 on the first drive for the Longhorns, Sam Ehlinger looked the way of Jake Smith for a long conversion to keep the drive going. On the next play Ehlinger finds Brennan Eagles running free down the middle of the field for 45-yards touchdown.

After TCU was able to get into Texas territory, the hold on third and 10 to force the punt with under 10 minutes to play in the second. The Longhorns would punt the ball right back to TCU. On third and long Ehlinger went deep to Eagles but it falls incomplete.

On the next drive the Horned Frogs were able to drive deep into Longhorns territory. After getting into the redzone, the defense tightened up on the Frogs to force a Griffin Kell field goal to retake the lead, 17-14 with under two minutes left to go.

After getting the ball back, Ehlinger throws an interception on what looked to be a miscommunication between he and Joshua Moore. TCU got the ball deep in Texas territory. After an unsportsmanlike penalty by the Horned Frogs, they were able to get into the redzone once again. Again TCU settles for a field goal attempt from Kell to make it 20-14.

The Longhorns played conservative after getting the ball back to go into halftime 20-14. The Horned Frogs will receive the second half kickoff.

Stats:

Ehlinger: 5/16 132 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT

Roschon Johnson: 3 carries, 18 yards

Jake Smith: 2 reception, 23 yards 1 TD

Eagles: 1 recption, 45 yard 1 TD

Texas Christian vs Texas: First quarter recap

The first quarter between the TCU Horned Frogs and Texas Longhorns went an entire hour. Lots of sloppy play that ends with a 7-7 tie.

The game started out with the Texas Longhorns receiving the opening kickoff. It took three times due to penalties to get the kick off to the Longhorns on offense. One negated a Bijan Robinson return that would have put Texas at the Horned Frogs one-yard line. Quarterback goes 0-3 on the first drive to force a punt to TCU.

After the Frogs drove inside Texas territory, the Longhorns were able to get a stop to force a TCU punt. The other big story early on in the quarter were the penalties early on. Delay of game on fourth down caused TCU to punt when they originally lined up to go for it. The Longhorns once again had a big play wiped out by a penalty and forced to punt back to the Frogs.

The Longhorns defense allowed TCU to go down the field and punch it in for the early 7-0 lead. Darwin Barlow punched it in for the Frogs.

During the first quarter defensive back Tyler Owens went down with a hamstring injury and was announced that he wouldn’t be back for this game. Through the first 10 minutes of the game Ehlinger hadn’t completed a single pass on three attempts. On his first completion, Jake Smith was called for pass interference to wipe it out. On third and 25, he finds Jared Wiley for 52 yards and a first down.

After their initial first down of the game, Ehlinger threw it down the sideline to Eagles but the ball was ripped out at the last second. The play was reviewed and upheld. The Longhorns were able to get the training rolling in the right direction. They cap off the drive with a touchdown pass from Ehlinger to Jake Smith.

Quarter ends with a 7-7 tie.

Stats

Sam Ehlinger 3/10 69 yards, 1 TD

Roschon Johnson 1 carry, 9 yards

Jared Wiley 1 reception, 52 yards

Jake Smith, 1 reception, 5 yards, 1 TD

Penalties- 7 for 40 yards

Sam Ehlinger’s passing tendencies through two weeks

After two weeks of games for the Texas Longhorns, we examine how Sam Ehlinger has looked throwing the ball. What are his tendencies?

[jwplayer Yj9YM8R4-er0jUifI]

Texas senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger is attempting to chase that elusive invite to New York by season’s end. While Ehlinger has put up some good seasons from a statistical standpoint for a Heisman bid, the thing that has held him back is the performance on the field. However, for the first time Ehlinger and the Longhorns are 2-0 under head coach Tom Herman. So can they do enough to get Sam to the ceremony?

Well the next step is retribution in Austin, Texas. In their last matchup at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, the Longhorns came out on top 31-16. Ehlinger threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns in the win. He also added one on the ground as Ehlinger has shown the propensity to do. It was the 2019 game that helped derail their season.

Looking at 2020, we dive into the numbers to see how Ehlinger has performed through two games. Where has Sam been able to find success through the air?

Texas Longhorn Football: Breaking down the depth chart for TCU

Texas has released its depth chart before hosting TCU. Jordan Whittington remains the only player out as Jake Smith is expected to return.

Texas has released its depth chart before hosting TCU on Saturday. Jordan Whittington remains the only player out as Jake Smith is expected to return this week.

The Quarterbacks

Sam Ehlinger Sr Casey Thompson So Hudson Card Fr Ja’Quinden Jackson Fr

For the third consecutive game, the quarterback depth chart will remain the same. Sam Ehlinger clearly leads the way with Casey Thompson remaining as the backup. Both true freshman Hudson Card and Ja’Quinden Jackson will continue to fight for reps in practice. If Ehlinger cannot play for whatever reason, Tom Herman will put Thompson in for relief.

The Running Backs

Keaontay Ingram Jr Roschon Johnson So Bijan Robinson Fr

Keaontay Ingram had an impressive day against Texas Tech, averaging 7.4 yards per carry. He will continue to get most of the running back reps with Roschon Johnson closely behind. Bijan Robinson took a scary fall on Saturday and is dealing with a strained back. The freshman should be in practice on Tuesday or Wednesday and will play on Saturday against TCU.

The Wide Receivers

X WR Brennan Eagles Sr Tarik Black Jr
H WR Jake Smith So Kai Money So <or> Brenden Schooler Sr
Z WR Joshua Moore Rs-So Al’Vonte Woodard So

One surprising change from the wide receivers comes from the X-receiver position. Tarik Black earned a start on Saturday after an impressive performance against UTEP. Then, Black only played 29 snaps compared to Brennan Eagles’ 50. This week, Eagles is listed atop the depth chart and will get the start. Even though he was listed on the depth chart last week, Jake Smith did not play. Herman said Smith is expected to play against the Horned Frogs.

Next, we look at the tight ends and offensive line.
