The Carolina Panthers officially announced a number of adjustments to their scouring department, including the big move for a big voice in the front office.

Cole Spencer, as first noted by Neil Stratton of InsideTheLeague.com on Friday morning, has been promoted to director of player personnel. Spencer, who was hired by the organization in May of 2021, had served as director of college scouting for the past two years.

Stepping up into that position will be Jared Kirksey. Formerly the assistant director of college scouting, Kirksey first joined the Panthers as an area scout in 2021.

In addition, the team has hired former safety Juston Burris as a scouting intern for the summer. Burris, a seven-year NFL veteran, played the last three seasons in Carolina.

The following adjustments were also announced:

  • West Cost scout Corey Fuller moved to Southwest
  • Southwest scout Eli Montague moved to Southeast
  • Scouting intern Caden McCloughan moved to West Coast scout
  • Scouting assistant Jordan Trgovac moved to Mid-Atlantic scout

List of Panthers 2023 free agents who remain unsigned

2023 Panthers free agents who remain unsigned

The Carolina Panthers re-signed two of their own free agents before closing out the month of May—offensive tackle Cameron Erving and guard Michael Jordan. But there remains a handful of the team’s players from the 2022 roster who are currently out on the open market.

Here are those seven free agents . . .

Panthers sign Juston Burris to active roster, Kenny Robinson Jr. to practice squad

After losing Jeremy Chinn, the Panthers brought back a pair of familiar names to help fill the glaring void.

The Carolina Panthers now have some terribly big shoes they need to fill on defense. And their first attempt at doing so will involve two familiar names.

Early Wednesday afternoon, safety Jeremy Chinn was placed on inured reserve with a hamstring issue—one that will keep him out for at least four weeks. In turn, the team has signed fellow safety Juston Burris up from the practice squad to the active roster.

Burris first joined the organization back in 2020, where he’d start alongside Chinn in 12 games. He then started in eight of his 10 outings the next season, amassing 76 tackles and two interceptions over those two campaigns in Carolina.

With free-agent signee Xavier Woods onboard this spring, Burris became a bit more expendable—and was released during the Panthers’ cutdown to their 53-man roster back on Aug. 30. The now seventh-year veteran was brought back as a member of the practice squad a day later.

To fill his spot on the practice squad, Carolina also signed Kenny Robinson Jr. The 2020 fifth-round pick was released from the group one month ago.

Every NFL team’s most surprising roster cut

Highlighting the most shocking roster cut for each NFL team.

With the preseason in the books, every NFL team has now trimmed their roster to the league–mandated 53 players. While these rosters will certainly undergo changes over the next couple of days, each team has their initial 53-man roster set.

But when going from 80 to 53 players, there are some tough calls NFL general managers have to make in the process. And there were certainly some shocking moves across the league during the final roster cuts, which should make for some interesting moves on the waiver wire.

We’ve rounded up our NFL Wires editors to highlight the most surprising roster cut from every NFL team.

Panthers S Juston Burris returns on a one-year deal

Juston Burris is now the third defensive back the Panthers have re-upped since Sunday.

Even though the Carolina Panthers have been pretty busy trekking around the country to watch this year’s incoming quarterback class, they haven’t been busy enough to take care of their own. And this week, specifically, has been all about taking care of the secondary.

On Thursday night, Juston Burris became the latest defensive back the Panthers have requested seconds on. As announced by the team themselves, the safety will return for 2022 on a one-year agreement.

Burris initially broke into the NFL as a fourth-round pick of the New York Jets in 2016. Following three seasons in “The Big Apple,” the NC State product bounced around between the Cleveland Browns and the then Oakland Raiders from 2018 to 2019.

He then joined Carolina in 2020, on a two-year, $8 million pact. The six-foot, 210-pounder has totaled 76 combined tackles and two interceptions over 23 games since.

Burris is now the third member of the Panthers secondary to re-up with the franchise in the past five days—joining cornerbacks Donte Jackson and Rashaan Melvin. Additionally, with Xavier Woods already signed on for a three-year, $15.7 million contract, Burris will likely serve as the next man up over the top behind Woods and Jeremy Chinn.

Panthers show out for ‘My Cause My Cleats’ in Week 14

Check out some of the Panthers’ 2021 causes through their special Week 14 kicks.

Continuing in the NFL’s annual tradition, the Carolina Panthers brought out their passions as part of 2022’s “My Cause My Cleats” for Week 14.

Let’s take a look at some of the players’ special kicks and the causes they represented during the team’s Sunday contest against the Atlanta Falcons.

Panthers LB Shaq Thompson back at practice to start Week 8

The Panthers saw some key defenders back at practice on Wednesday, including LB Shaq Thompson.

Losers of four straight and currently the bottom-feeders of the NFC South, the Carolina Panthers are sinking fast. But they may be getting at least one lifesaver thrown their way soon.

The team started its week ahead of their upcoming matchup against the Atlanta Falcons with linebacker Shaq Thompson on the practice field. Although limited, his participation is a soothing sign for the Panthers considering their recent string of injuries.

Thompson has missed the past three games due to a plantar fascia issue. Having the leader of the defense back in time for a key divisional contest is, of course, a huge deal for this struggling squad.

Here’s Wednesday’s injury report in its entirety:

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game Status
CB C.J. Henderson Shoulder Limited
LB Shaq Thompson Foot Limited
WR Terrace Marshall Jr. Concussion DNP
FB Giovanni Ricci Concussion Limited
T Cameron Erving Neck Full
T Daviyon Nixon Knee Limited

In three more encouraging steps for the defense, Carolina saw cornerback Stephon Gilmore and safeties Myles Hartsfield and Juston Burris back as well.

Burris was officially designated to return following a three-week stint on the injured reserve with a groin. Gilmore and Hartsfield have already been designated for their returns after wrapping up their stays off the active roster.

Panthers snap count standouts: CB C.J. Henderson eases in

We learned a little bit on Sunday about how the Panthers will move forward without some key players.

Revisiting the Carolina Panthers’ 36-28 loss may not be fun for some, if not most, of you. But, like head coach Matt Rhule and quarterback Sam Darnold stressed after the game, you learn and move on.

So let’s learn a little something from how Sunday’s snaps were distributed in the Week 4 defeat.

Panthers injury update: S Juston Burris placed on IR

The Panthers have now placed another starting DB on the injured reserve, with S Juston Burris joining CB Jaycee Horn on Tuesday.

The third domino from the Carolina Panthers’ costly Week 3 victory has now taken its fall.

As announced by the team, strong safety Juston Burris has been placed on the injured reserve. He will now miss at least three weeks while healing from a groin injury sustained in the 24-9 win over the Houston Texans.

Burris is now the second starting defensive back to be placed on the shelf in as many days. Rookie cornerback Jaycee Horn was officially sent to his stint yesterday, as he’ll miss an extended period of time following surgery on his broken right foot.

In a corresponding move, center Sam Tecklenburg has been signed up from the practice squad. He’ll, presumably, provide some depth behind Matt Paradis and for a line already missing its starting left guard in Pat Elflein.

Taking over Tecklenburg’s spot on the practice squad will be cornerback Madre Harper. Harper, who was signed on Tuesday, played nine games for the New York Giants in his rookie campaign of 2020.

Panthers injury updates: RB Christian McCaffrey not expected to go on IR

The Panthers, fortunately, do not expect to be without star RB Christian McCaffrey for too long.

Not only did the Carolina Panthers take in a fresh breath of air with Monday’s trade for cornerback C.J. Henderson, but they also took one out with the current (and encouraging) status of their superstar running back.

When speaking to reporters today (although mainly about Henderson), head coach Matt Rhule gave fans another reason to feel pretty, pretty good. He soundly stated that the team does not envision having to place Christian McCaffrey on the injured reserve list moving forward.

“Christian won’t go on IR,” he said. “I would expect that we put Jaycee [Horn] at some point this week. Scott [Fitterer] will handle that. Jaycee will obviously have surgery and be out for a while. And Christian, we don’t see in that light.”

Although the bit on Horn is a bummer, news of his surgery and long-term absence was to be expected. The rookie cornerback broke multiple bones in his right foot during the Panthers’ 24-9 win over the Houston Texans in Week 3.

McCaffrey, on the other hand, won’t be out too long with his strained hamstring.

Rhule also provided an update on safety Juston Burris, who also had to exit the victory early this past Thursday night. He believes Burris will be back in “a couple of weeks” while he heals up from a groin injury.

As some insurance for these secondary losses, in addition to taking in Henderson, the team has signed cornerback Rashaan Melvin, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, off the practice squad and onto the active roster. Melvin has played in each of the last two games for a total of 62 defensive snaps against the Houston and the New Orleans Saints.
