Observations from Clemson’s offense in 2024 spring game

Here are some observations on the offense from Clemson’s 2024 spring game.

Clemson’s 2024 spring game is officially in the books. The Orange team defeated the White team, 27-12, in Saturday’s game at Memorial Stadium.

The Tigers had plenty of highlights on both offense and defense. Let’s look at the offense.

Wesco shows off

Bryant Wesco looked every bit the part of a five-star recruit in Saturday’s spring game. Wesco, ranked the sixth-best receiver in the nation by 247Sports for the class of 2024, made three catches for 26 yards.

Wesco, playing for the Orange team, caught a short pass over the middle and picked up 15 yards for a first down on his first catch of the afternoon.

Two plays later, Wesco did one even better by hauling in an over-the-shoulder, 9-yard touchdown grab from quarterback Trent Pearman. Wesco made the catch in tight coverage on a fade route for the Orange team’s first score of the game and a 7-3 lead with 1:31 to play in the first quarter.

Quarterback play

Speaking of Pearman, he was his own storyline in Saturday’s spring game. The sophomore from nearby D.W. Daniel High School in Clemson finished the afternoon an impressive 10-for-13 with 113 yards and a touchdown through the air.

Pearman engineered the scoring drive that ended with Wesco’s touchdown catch by capping a five-play, 57-yard drive.

One of the most impressive plays of the day was when Pearman took off for a 49-yard touchdown run on a read-option play with 3:45 to play in the first half.

Later in the game, Pearman made a nice throw intended for receiver Jackson Crosby in the corner of the end zone. It took a terrific defensive play from cornerback Noah Dixon to break up the pass with 3:07 to play.

Cade Klubnik got off to a poor start but rebounded for a decent showing at Saturday’s game. Klubnik finished his day 13-of-26 for 158 yards.

He was intercepted by cornerback Tavoy Feagin in the first quarter when receiver Adam Randall ran the wrong route. Feagin returned the interception 45 yards to set up the game’s first score, a 29-yard Nolan Hauser field goal for the White team.

Klubnik was fortunate to only throw the one pick. He uncorked a pass into double coverage later in the first quarter, but a dropped interception bailed Klubnik out on the ill-advised throw.

There were some highlights for Klubnik, though. He converted on a 3rd-and-12 midway through the second quarter when he found Antonio Williams on a short route to his right. That led to an impressive 15-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that took 7:10 off the clock and put Klubnik’s team ahead 21-6 with 5:42 left in the first half.

On Klubnik’s next drive, tight end Olsen Patt-Henry dropped what would have been a first down for the Orange team.

Later on in the game, Randall hauled in a perfect 55-yard strike from Klubnik on the final play of the third quarter.

Christopher Vizzina, who started at quarterback for the White team, was a pedestrian 14-of-25 for 108 yards and two touchdowns. His biggest mistake early on came when Jamal Anderson intercepted an attempted screen pass and returned it 25 yards for a pick six.

Later in the first half, Vizzina was picked off again by Anderson, but the play was negated by an offsides penalty.

Vizzina’s second official interception came with time winding down in the third quarter. On that play, Vizzina made a throw to the wrong side of a wheel route that led to an interception from Jahiem Lawson at the Orange team’s 2-yard line.

It wasn’t just Wesco who stood out at receiver

Clemson had a few standout performances from its receivers in Saturday’s scrimmage. Josh Sapp had three catches for 60 yards. The sophomore from Greenville made a sensational play when he leapt well into the air to haul in a 39-yard pass from Vizzina over two defenders in the third quarter.

Randall had 85 receiving yards through the air on four catches, including his 55-yard grab to end the third quarter. Randall also made a terrific catch as part of the first-quarter scoring drive that ended with Wesco’s touchdown.

Williams, sidelined for much of last season due to injuries, made a nice return to the field in the spring game. He caught five of seven targets for 62 yards, including a 19-yard reception.

Garrett Riley on Clemson’s competition in the QB room

Riley discusses the current quarterback situation the Tigers are going through this spring.

The Clemson football team in 2024 has an incredibly high ceiling, but a lot of that will revolve around the level of play at quarterback.

Like the team, Clemson’s starting quarterback, Cade Klubnik, has a high ceiling. Throughout the history of the game, we’ve seen quarterbacks with a ton of potential fail to live up to it, and Clemson fans don’t want to see that with Klubnik.

Clemson offensive coordinator Garrett Riley is confident in the progress Klubnik has made, but he’s not the only quarterback on the roster improving. Redshirt freshman Christopher Vizzina has brought a lot of competition to that QB room.

“There’s competition there, and that’s what’s good. You get a guy (Vizzina) that’s going to put the ball in play, and I don’t care what team, if it’s ones, twos, threes, whoever and whatever group he’s in, he’s leading, and we’re driving the ball and scoring touchdowns. That’s naturally going to kind of create that competition, and that’s what we’re seeing right now,” Riley said.

Competition is a great thing, as iron sharpens iron. There’s no doubt that Klubnik is QB1 heading into the season, but there’s also no doubt that feeling comfortable with the guy behind your starter is massive.

Christopher Vizzina on not starting, lessons learned with the Tigers

Spring practice is in full swing, with quarterback Christopher Vizzina meeting with the media.

Clemson landed a huge quarterback recruit in their 2023 class with four-star Christopher Vizzina.

The redshirt freshman ranked as the No. 6 quarterback and No. 77 overall player in the 2023 class, according to 247Sports, one of the top recruits in the country. Landing Vizzina solidified the Tigers’ future at the position, giving them another highly touted recruit under center to build around.
Vizzina recently met with the media and shared some insights about his freshman season.

“Last year honestly was the first time in my life I wasn’t playing,” Vizzina said. “There was a lot of lessons that came from that, but that was also kind of like a rubber band, pulling me back so when the opportunity comes, I can let it go. It’s going to be good so I’m excited about everything. It’s been a good couple of practices to be able to show what I’ve had and what I’ve learned for the past couple months.”

While Vizzina still sits behind starting quarterback Cade Klubnik, that doesn’t mean the young quarterback isn’t hard at work honing his craft. This young gunslinger wants to prove something to head coach Dabo Swinney and the rest of the Tigers.

“To go out there and get an actual rep of it and coach Swinney seeing it, everyone sees it, it’s kind of like ‘hey I’m here, this is what I’ve been waiting on,” Vizzina said.

Vizzina is an exciting player for the Tigers, and he will work to continue to improve his game until his time comes.

Dabo Swinney shares an update on what he’s seen from Christopher Vizzina

Dabo Swinney shared on update on what he’s seen from Christopher Vizzina.

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson coaching staff landed a huge quarterback prospect in the 2023 class in Christopher Vizzina, though we haven’t gotten many updates about the young quarterback throughout the 2023 season.

When asked about the quarterback position and if Vizzina is pushing Klubnik, Swinney said that he hopes he is.

“I hope so. That is a perfect example of what you get out of bowl prep,” Swinney said.

“I am going to tell you what, it has been fun. We have done a couple of scrimmages, and hopefully, we will have one more. Seeing CV and Trent (Pearman), those guys are good players. CV has been awesome.”

We didn’t get to see a lot of Vizzina in 2023, as the redshirt quarterback took just nine snaps over two games this season. Without throwing a pass, knowing what you have in a guy is tough.

“I was really anxious to see him because he has not had a lot,” Swinney said. “He has done some scout team, but most of the stuff has been mental work. We got him what we could, so I was anxious to see where he was based on what I saw in August.”

“It has been a fun week or so watching him. You get reminded pretty quick on why he was such a high-level recruit. He is big. He is strong. He can run. He is accurate with the football. He is a very good player.”

Hopefully, Vizzina will get more opportunities and push starting quarterback Cade Klubnik toward improvement.

Dabo Swinney on if Clemson plans to dip into the transfer portal to add a QB

Dabo Swinney is comfortable with where his team is at quarterback right now.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney held a press conference Tuesday and was asked about the Tigers’ current quarterback situation and if they plan on looking to add a quarterback from the transfer portal.

With the departure of backup quarterback Hunter Helms, the Tigers could be seen as thin at the position. Regardless, Swinney is comfortable with where this team is at the position and doesn’t plan on addressing it in the portal.

“No, we talk about that at every position, but we like the guys we have, and we like who’s coming,” Swinney said. “So, we feel pretty good about the direction that we have there.”

“If Paul wasn’t here and we didn’t feel like we feel about Trent Pearman, then we would probably have to go find somebody else,” Swinney said.

The Tigers will return Paul Tyson in a student coach role, but he will also remain their fourth-string quarterback. Tyson gives them comfort at the position with four guys. Swinney will prepare him if No.3 quarterback Trent Pearman can’t go.

“We really, really like Trent Pearman. He’s got some moxie and savvy,” Swinney said. “And those of you that have watched him play, this kid was a two-time Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of South Carolina. This ain’t no slouch, now. This kid can play. He needed to get a little bigger, he needed to get a little stronger, but he’s got savvy, he’s got instincts, he’s got moxie. I mean, he is a really, really, really, really good third-team quarterback.

“So, that’s what we got, and then we got Paul, who’s a sixth-year guy who’s got a wealth of experience who could go win the game for us in the Gator Bowl if we need him to. We got him. So, that’s where we are.”

The name people are most likely excited about is Christopher Vizzina, who will take over as the Tigers’ No.2 QB. Vizzina redshirted this season as he prepares for a bigger role down the line.

“We’re excited about CV,” Swinney said of Vizzina, the former blue-chip recruit from Alabama. “We’re kind of executing the plan that we put in place. This was a highly recruited guy that could have gone to a lot of places, and he chose to come (to Clemson). He was only 17, so that was kind of what we recruited him, to redshirt.”

Clemson is in a fine position at quarterback right now, and they have their guy in starting quarterback Cade Klubnik.

Ranking Clemson FB players based on On3’s NIL evaluation

Eighteen Tigers have NIL evaluations in the six figures.

While Clemson hasn’t made the most noise in the name, image and likeness world, the school’s athletes have still taken advantage of the opportunity.

Clemson football players have been in the headlines recently because of their deals. Sophomore quarterback Cade Klubnik signed a deal with Beats by Dre in August. Last month, running back Will Shipley partnered with Chipotle and had the downtown Clemson Chipotle location briefly named “Shipotle.”

Last updated on Wednesday, On3’s NIL evaluation algorithm uses a player’s national licensing and sponsorship market, as well as roster value, to calculate an estimated money amount for that player. Some of the college football players with the top evaluations include Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, Texas’ Arch Manning and USC’s Caleb Williams.

That said, here are the top Clemson football players with the highest NIL evaluations based on On3’s algorithm:

Swinney gives injury update on Clemson’s backup QB

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney gave an injury update on the Tigers’ injured backup quarterback.

Following the Tigers’ first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney spoke to the media and gave an injury update on backup quarterback Hunter Helms.

Swinney said that there is no firm timetable on the return of Helms, but his sprained right foot is not a long-term concern, and everything is “intact.”

“We’ll get Hunter back sooner rather than later,” Swinney said.

Helms was spotted in a walking boot at Thursday’s practice but was dressed in pads.

Swinney added that fifth-year Paul Tyson is the backup quarterback until Helms returns. True freshman Christopher Vizzina is currently serving as the third-string quarterback. Still, the plan to redshirt Vizzina remains the same unless something happens to starting quarterback Cade Klubnik, Swinney said.

Originally a walk-on, Helms has played in five games over three seasons with the Tigers. Over those five games, he has completed 14 of 25 pass attempts for 135 yards and two touchdowns. He did not appear in any games in 2022.

Hunter Helms was wearing a boot on his right foot, according to multiple media members in attendance on Thursday. Helms was limited but was still wearing pads, according to The State’s Chapel Fowler.

Helms has been second on the depth chart behind Cade Klubnik this fall camp.

Originally a walk-on, Helms has played in five games over three seasons with the Tigers. Over those five games, he has completed 14 of 25 pass attempts for 135 yards and two touchdowns. He did not appear in any games in 2022.

Taking second-team snaps instead of Helms on Thursday was Paul Tyson, who transferred to Clemson from Arizona State this offseason. True freshman Christopher Vizzina took third-team reps.

Vizzina gives his thoughts on potentially redshirting in 2023

Clemson freshman quarterback Christopher Vizzina spoke to the media for the first time on Saturday.

Clemson quarterback Christopher Vizzina spoke to the media on Saturday for the first time since joining the Tigers’ roster this spring.

Speaking at a Dear Old Clemson NIL event, Vizzina gave his thoughts on the Tigers’ plan for him to redshirt his freshman season.

“That was a possibility coming into this, but it doesn’t discourage me at all,” Vizzina said. “I want to learn. I want to be ready for when my chance comes; I want to be prepared for it.”

Coming out of high school, Vizzina was the No. 6 quarterback prospect in the class of 2023, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

As a mid-year enrollee, the former four-star recruit struggled in Clemson’s spring game in April, throwing two interceptions and completing three of nine pass attempts for nine yards.

“I got here, new offense and everything. I hit the learning curve a little bit early on, but I felt like I finally got adjusted to it, maybe after three practices, and I started rolling from there,” Vizzina said. “I’m glad I came early. I don’t know what I would’ve done if I came in the summer. Just trying to be ready to play and everything like that, I feel like coming in the spring was definitely the right decision.”

Head coach Dabo Swinney said earlier this week that the plan is to redshirt Vizzina, making Hunter Helms the presumed backup quarterback behind Cade Klubnik.

“We hope that (Vizzina) can be our ’23 signee and our ’24 signee, if you will, and it really kind of sets us up with a good situation with Cade being a junior and him being a redshirt freshman, which tells you how we feel about CV. I think we got a great player right there,” Swinney said.

Jersey numbers for every true freshman on Clemson’s roster

Clemson’s football team has a lot of new faces on its roster, so make sure you know who makes what play by learning their jersey numbers.

Clemson will kick off its 2023 season in under two months, and for roughly a quarter of the team’s roster, it will be their first collegiate football game.

The Tigers’ 2023 recruiting class, which consists of 26 commits, was ranked No. 11 in the nation, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

Highlighted by five-star defensive tackle Peter Woods, four-star defensive lineman T.J. Parker and four-star quarterback Christopher Vizzina, among others, Clemson’s freshmen class has players with high potential.

But, with so many new faces joining the team, it can be difficult to know who’s who in the first few games of the season.

To help fans keep track of those new faces, here are the jersey numbers for every Clemson true freshman on the roster, including walk-ons:
