Texans WR Nico Collins teams up with Boys & Girls Clubs of Houston to provide Thanksgiving meals

Houston Texans receiver Nico Collins partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Houston to provide meals.

Nico Collins has been an avid supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Houston.

According to senior director of development Shannon Woodruff, the former 2021 third-round receiver showed initiative as soon as he became a member of the Houston Texans.

“He reached out and said he wanted to provide meals to our families, and it felt like a perfect match for this holiday season,” Woodruff said.

For Collins, partnering The Chosen Foundation to help host a Thanksgiving impact event at the the Morefield Location brought him back to humble beginnings in Birmingham, Alabama.

“I have sat here before; I was in their shoes,” said Collins. “I know what it feels like to go through everyday uncertainty, not knowing what the next day is going to bring, not knowing how you are going to get your next meal. So just coming out here and doing this for them, you never know what they are going through. It is wonderful to be a part of, and it is wonderful to do. I am grateful for this, and I am going to continue to do it and give back to the city as much as I can.”

While Collins handed out meals to the underserved, the subject of the Texans’ two-game winning streak wasn’t overlooked. A calf injury nixed Collins for the first time this season, but the 24-year-old is anxious to return against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 11 Sunday.

“I am getting ready for this week and ready to be back out there with the fellas so we can keep this train rolling,” Collins told reporters. “We are getting ready for AZ this week and keeping our foot on the gas and continue to be great.”

The former Michigan product is having a career season with 631 yards receiving on 36 receptions and four touchdowns. Collins ranks in the top-20 in the NFL in yards after catch, averaging 17.5 yards.

By the numbers: Texas was outgained in total yards despite victory

Houston had more total yards, but Texas came away with what matters as we look at the final numbers in Saturday’s victory.

The Texas Longhorns survived a scare on Saturday and beat the Houston Cougars 31-24. Continue reading “By the numbers: Texas was outgained in total yards despite victory”

One of the NFL’s most exciting rookie receivers won’t play vs. Saints

One of the NFL’s most exciting rookie receivers won’t play vs. Saints. Tank Dell will not clear concussion protocol in time for Week 6’s game:

One of the NFL’s most exciting rookie receivers won’t play against the New Orleans Saints this week. Houston Texans standout Tank Dell has not been practicing and will not clear concussion protocol in time for Week 6’s game, per KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson.

Dell, picked at No. 70 overall in the third round this year out of the Houston Cougars program, ranks second in the league among first-year wideouts with 324 receiving yards through five games. His 19 receptions are tied for fourth-most. With Dell likely missing this game, the Texans will have to lean more heavily on veteran receivers Nico Collins (25 receptions for 467 yards) and Robert Woods (21 catches for 221 yards) to support young quarterback CJ Stroud.

Still, it’s a nice break for the Saints. They’re going to have multiple tries to take down several opposing teams missing their best players with Anthony Richardson down for the Indianapolis Colts with a shoulder injury and Justin Jefferson possibly out for the Minnesota Vikings with an injured hamstring. Dennis Allen’s team must make the most of these opportunities and improve on their 3-2 record.

Saints-Texans could be overshadowed by Astros-Rangers in Sunday’s ALCS Game 1

Sunday’s Saints-Texans game could be overshadowed by the Astros-Rangers playoff game 20 minutes uptown. Major League Baseball is fine-tuning its schedule for ALCS Game 1:

The NFL might be overshadowed this Sunday, at least in the Houston metro area. The New Orleans Saints will kick off with the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium at Noon CT — with MLB’s American League Championship Series between the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers set to begin about 20 minutes uptown at Minute Maid Park.

Now, we aren’t sure when that playoff game is going to start; the MLB is fine-tuning their playoff schedule as various series wrap up around the country. But what’s certain is that the Saints and Texans are looking like an undercard matchup before a heated tilt between two in-state rivals.

There’s a lot on the line: whoever wins this best-of-seven series will earn the AL pennant and advance to the World Series. On top of that, the Rangers own a two-game lead in the “Lone Star Series” history with the Astros, but Houston won 9 of their 13 games in the MLB regular season this year.

At any rate — expect this MLB playoff game to start with plenty of time to spare between the Saints-Texans final whistle. Houston is a strong sports town and they’ll want a packed house, not to mention plenty of time for viewers at home to tune in. We’ll keep an eye out for a confirmed start time and any scheduling conflicts.

Update: MLB announced that first pitch for Astros-Rangers is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. CT. There’s plenty of time between the two games, but plan on heavy traffic in downtown Houston if you’re making the trip.

Texans QB C.J. Stroud admits need to ‘chill’ on delicious Houston food

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud says the delicious cuisine in Houston has him getting off schedule.

C.J. Stroud is in the midst of a battle for the starting quarterback job. The little things add up.

One area where Stroud admits he is struggling to maintain discipline is with the cuisine the city of Houston has to offer.

The Houston Texans rookie told reporters after training camp practice Sunday at Houston Methodist Training Center that the friendliness of the city along with the food is challenging his restraint.

“I’ve gotten around in Houston a little bit,” Stroud said. “I’ve heard a lot of great things of course since I moved here, and the one thing that sticks out to me is the people. The people are very welcoming, very nice. The food is amazing. I’ve got to chill on some of the food because, you know, I’ve got to maintain my nutrition.”

Stroud says the city has provided a “welcoming experience” and seeks to reward Space City for their hospitality and belief.

Said Stroud: “I’m very blessed and want to turn the city around and want to build a lot of positive things.”

The No. 2 overall pick shared which foods were the most appealing.

“I love soul food, so, I’ve got to chill on the fried foods,” said Stroud. “I’ve had a couple good spots. I love oxtail, so I’ve got to chill on the oxtail. But I haven’t had too much.”

Texans fans would allow Stroud to have oxtail for life if it resulted in a Super Bowl.

ChatGPT ranks top 10 quarterbacks in Notre Dame history

Do you agree with these rankings?

No position in sports is more important than the quarterback. Notre Dame is lucky that it will have a good one this season in [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag]. WATCH: Chiefs rookie RB Deneric Prince’s offseason training continues

#Chiefs RB Deneric Prince continued his training down in Texas during the 4th of July holiday.

Before you know it quarterbacks and rookies will flock to Missouri Western State University for Kansas City Chiefs training camp.

While some players are out enjoying the Fourth of July holiday and their final days off ahead of the 2023 NFL season, Chiefs rookie RB Deneric Prince remains hard at work, training in near his hometown in the Houston, Texas area.

Prince was previously working alongside fellow rookie, Keondre Coburn, at former Chiefs RB Derrick Blaylock’s training center, Armed Sports Performance. He also worked with Harold “Coach T” Taylor of Taylormade 360 Elite Training, who shared some new clips on social media of Prince running some drills on Tuesday.

You can see the rookie working on his footwork, inside and outside handoffs and his pass-catching, the latter being extremely important in Andy Reid’s offense. That’s an area of Prince’s game that shined during OTAs and mandatory minicamp. It’s also one of the reasons he could see the field early in Kansas City.

Remember, Prince only caught 17 passes for 162 yards and one touchdown in college. Texas A&M and Tulsa didn’t utilize him in the passing game, but that won’t stop the Chiefs from unlocking that area of his game.

Earning the trust of Patrick Mahomes as a receiver during the course of training camp and the preseason will also be a big deal for Prince. Isiah Pacheco only caught 19 passes last season (combined regular and postseason). Clyde Edwards-Helaire caught 36 passes as a rookie back in 2020.

WATCH: Chiefs rookie Deneric Prince training with private RB coach in Houston

#Chiefs RB Deneric Prince continues to get offseason work in, this time with private RB coach Harold “Coach T” Taylor in Houston, Texas.

Kansas City Chiefs rookie RB Deneric Prince appears to be making the absolute most of his downtime this offseason.

While players are still away from the team ahead of training camp, Prince has been hard at work training on his own time. He recently stopped in to work with teammate Keondre Coburn and former Chiefs RB Derrick Blaylock at Armed Sports Performance. Now, he’s getting some work in with a private RB coach in the Houston, Texas area.

Harold “Coach T” Taylor at Taylormade 360 Elite Training, shared some clips of Prince working with him on social media this Friday. Prince appears to be going through some footwork, agility and avoidance drills. Taylor even had him working on his spin move a bit.

Prince certainly looks ready to come in and make his mark during training camp and the preseason. He saw with Isiah Pacheco last season that the Chiefs will play the best players regardless of draft status. Making some noise over the course of the next two months could be key to landing a spot on the 53-man roster.

Catching up with the Boston Celtics’ 2023 NBA draft workouts Part IV

Let’s dive into who the Celtics might be targeting at No. 35.

Even with the offseason here in earnest, the Boston Celtics have plenty on their plate regarding their future as they continue to work out prospects projected to go in the second round of the ’23 NBA draft.

With the Celtics likely to need cheap depth in the future, look for prospects who are either polished enough to get some real minutes in their rookie campaign or who might be okay with a season or two stashed abroad while the team makes decisions about how it will use the new two way player slot added to rosters in the latest collective bargaining agreement recently adopted by the league.

Adding to our previous reporting of the team’s known workouts comes a new wave of prospects Boston has been working out — let’s dive into who the Celtics might be targeting at No. 35.

Report: Tramon Mark previously worked out for Thunder in pre-draft visit

Tramon Mark recently withdrew his name from the draft and will return for his senior college season at Arkansas.

The 2023 NBA draft is less than a month away, which means pre-draft visits with prospects will increase exponentially for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Thunder own three draft picks — No. 12, No. 37 and No. 50. Considering their recent history, odds are the Thunder will make at least one draft trade.

With three selections though, the Thunder have had their fair share of pre-draft visits with prospects. A recently reported workout included Arkansas guard Tramon Mark, per Rookie Wire.

Mark had a pre-draft visit with the Thunder, but that no longer really matters. He recently withdrew his name from the draft, which means he’ll no longer be an option for OKC.

Despite not getting invited to the draft combine, Mark did his due diligence as a draft-eligible player to see what his market was prior to making a decision by the May 31 deadline, the date players with college eligibility left could return to school.

The 21-year-old returned to school because his draft stock was likely nonexistent, and he was heading toward undrafted free agency. Instead, he’ll spend one more college season in hopes of increasing his stock for next year, ala Gonzaga forward Drew Timme last year.

Mark spent his first three college seasons at Houston. In 37 games last season, he averaged 10.1 points on 39% shooting, 4.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists. He also shot 32.8% from 3 on 3.2 attempts.

Mark will spend his senior season at Arkansas, where he transferred to in early April.

The 2023 NBA draft is scheduled for Thursday, June 22. A full list of prospects who’ve met with the Thunder can be read here.
