Texas Basketball: Preparation begins for a rematch with No. 3 Houston

The Longhorns face another tough test against the Houston Cougars.

It’s crunch time in college basketball. Teams on the bubble across the country are looking to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Texas is one of those teams.

The Texas Longhorns (16-8) face the Houston Cougars (21-3) on Saturday. With no game in between now and then, the Longhorns should have plenty of time to prepare. They’re going to need it.

The two teams faced earlier this season in the Moody Center in Austin. Texas battled back from an 11-point second half deficit to send the game to overtime, but the better team separated. Houston won the game on an 11-7 overtime period, 76-72.

Fast forward to Saturday where Texas will again face one of the top NCAA title contenders on the road. The venue ramps up the degree of difficulty for the Longhorns and head coach Rodney Terry.

Houston doesn’t often lose at home. The Cougars are 13-0 when playing at the Fertitta Center in Houston. Terry and company will be due significant credit if they can find a way to win.

The battle for Texas will come down to rebounding perhaps more than anything else. Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson reiterated the importance of rebounding following the Cougars’ win over the Longhorns stating that rebounding has been key to his teams’ success. It wasn’t coachspeak.

Houston won the rebounding battle in the last matchup, 47-36. In a game that went to overtime, a disparity that wide can change the outcome.

Texas is still an unfinished product. Even in Saturday’s 94-58 win over West Virginia, the Mountaineers brought in more rebounds than the Longhorns. It took Dylan Disu shooting 7-for-10 from the three point line to earn that margin of victory.

Despite room for growth, the Longhorns played well in spurts in recent losses to Houston and Iowa State. They will look to put it all together in a big game at 12 p.m. CT on CBS.

Texas comes up short in overtime vs. Houston, 76-72

The recurring theme of the Texas basketball season following a close Houston loss is “too little, too late.”

Texas gave a valiant effort against the Houston Cougars on Monday night. Like too many times in the young season, the Longhorns came up just short.

Houston built a sizable lead early on in the game. The Cougars led by as many as 12 points in the first half and held a 41-30 lead early in the second half before the Longhorns battled their way back into the game.

After falling behind by 11 points with over 18 minutes left in the second half, Texas stormed back building as much as a 54-48 lead. Houston answered back with a 9-0 run taking a lead of its own.

The Longhorns fought to the end taking the game to overtime. The Cougars outlasted them.

The recurring theme of the game for Texas was consistently falling just short of success. On too many defensive possessions, the Longhorns allowed offensive rebounds and second opportunities. On too many offensive possessions, the team settled for bad shots that missed.

In the grand scheme of the season, the Houston game isn’t going to be what prevents Texas from reaching its goals. Nevertheless, early losses to West Virginia and UCF made this game of added importance. The Longhorns simply couldn’t get it done.

Point guard and top scorer Max Abmas led Texas with 20 points on the game. Starting forward Dillon Mitchell added 16 points followed by fellow forward Dylan Disu’s 14-point game.

The Longhorns will next travel to Fort Worth to face No. 25 TCU. They fall to 14-7 on the season.

Texas’ offensive line had a very productive game against Houston

As we gather our thoughts after Texas’ 31-24 victory over Houston, it’s time we give the offensive line their flowers.

As we gather our thoughts after the Texas 31-24 victory over Houston, it’s time we give the offensive line their flowers.

The Longhorns have an elite offensive line, and on Saturday they further proved that theory. In 69 snaps, the five starters allowed just two sacks, one hurry, and four quarterback pressures.

Left tackle Kelvin Banks had the best day by far, not allowing any pressures, sacks, or hurries. Pro Football Focus gave Banks an 87.5 pass block grade, one of his best games this season so far.

Hayden Conner, DJ Campbell, and Jake Majors also had impressive games. The only lineman that didn’t have a decent game against Houston was right tackle Christian Jones. The senior tackle allowed one sack, one hurry, and two quarterback pressures. PFF gave Jones a 64.9 pass bock grade.

Though it might not seem like it after watching the game, the o-line had a very productive game and will need to continue their impressive play if quarterback Quinn Ewers is ruled out for multiple weeks.

Could we see Arch Manning on the field for Texas?

Should Ewers be sidelined for the next game vs BYU, could we see Arch Manning on the field?

The No. 8 Texas Longhorns escaped with a win over the Houston Cougars on Saturday, 31-24.

Though they won the battle, the war might be in question.

Quarterback Quinn Ewers scrambled on a broken play on 3rd down and injured his shoulder after taking a hard hit.

He was then taken to the medical tent followed by a visit to the locker room. Ewers was seen a bit later with his pads and helmet off and a brace, confirming his status for the rest of the game to be out.

In a press conference following the game, head coach Steve Sarkisian didn’t have an update for us, saying that we will know more tomorrow.

Sarkisian then said, “This team has a lot of confidence in Maalik and Arch”.

Although Maalik Murphy looked underwhelming, he was put into the game on short notice and wasn’t prepared. Murphy is a very intriguing prospect, standing at 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds.

He has a missile for an arm and uses his legs as he needs to, but right now he is a very raw player and might not have his talents tuned right in order to carry this Texas team should Ewers be sidelined for multiple weeks.

Could we see Arch Manning finally play in a game for the Texas Longhorns? If Ewers is ruled out for next week and Murphy can’t get the offense going, Sark may throw Manning in the game to see if he can give the Horns a boost.

Firstly, we need to hope that Ewers’ injury isn’t significant and he can get back on the right track.

Takeaways from Texas’ 31-24 win over Houston

Texas looked as good and as bad as it has this season all in one game.

Texas won on Saturday, but it doesn’t feel like it. Several terms come to mind about the performance from the Texas coaching staff. Few of them are positive.

The staff prepared Texas to start the game. Up 21-0, the team looked better than it had all season on both sides of the football. Then Texas let up. And I’m not convinced that blame falls on the players.

The Longhorns didn’t win on Saturday. They escaped. Considering the lead the team gave up, it was the most embarrassing performance of the season. It’s not even close.

This team is good enough to win every game. There’s no question about that. But Texas has to get out of its own way.

Let’s look at a few takeaways from Saturday’s puzzling performance.
