LSU overcomes slow start to breeze past New Orleans in midweek blowout

After four scoreless innings, the Tigers erupted to capture a 16-0 win in the final game before conference play.

It has been said that anything done three or more times becomes a pattern. If that is true, the LSU Tigers have a habit of getting to the bottom of the sixth or seventh inning and deciding they are ready to end the game.

The Tigers used a seven-run bottom of the sixth inning to blast New Orleans 16-0 in the last game before conference play starts this weekend.

[autotag]Chase Shores[/autotag] got the start on the mound but only pitched 2.1 innings before [autotag]Garrett Edwards[/autotag] came in for him in the third inning. Neither of them gave up a run and they gave up a combined 2 hits on 7 strikeouts and one walk.

Neither team scored a run until the bottom of the fifth inning when [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] hit a three-run bomb to left field to score [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] to make the game 3-0 after five innings.

That was the shot in the arm that the LSU offense needed. In the bottom of the sixth inning, [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag], [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag], and [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] scored on a throwing error, Kling scored on a [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] flyout, Crews scored on a White single, and [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit a two-run homer to make it 10-0 after six innings.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] hit a two-RBI double to left, [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] walked to bring home a run, [autotag]Jack Merrifield[/autotag] walked, and [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] hit a two-RBI double to make it 16-0.

[autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag], [autotag]Blake Money[/autotag], and [autotag]Christian Little[/autotag] got some work out of the bullpen in the final three innings. They finished off the scoreless night as the Tigers won 16-0.

SEC play starts this weekend as the Tigers travel to Texas A&M for their first series. The first pitch for that series is scheduled for Friday night at 6 p.m. CT.

LSU baseball delivers offensive onslaught in run rule win over Central Connecticut

LSU had a nice Saturday cruise in Baton Rouge as it run-ruled Central Connecticut 26-4 in seven innings.

[autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] got the start on the mound for LSU and other than giving up a solo homer in the first inning, he had a pretty good day. His final line was 5.2 innings pitched, three hits, one run, and six strikeouts.

In the bottom of the first, LSU made sure that the Central Connecticut lead didn’t last long. [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] hit an RBI double to left field to score [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] to tie the game. That was followed by [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag]’s first homer as a member of LSU as he hit a two-run shot to right field to make it 3-1 after the first inning.

In the bottom of the second, [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit a three-run shot to left field and Morgan scored on a sacrifice bunt by [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] to extend the lead to 7-1. The onslaught continued in the third inning as Dugas hit an RBI single and then scored on a wild pitch. Tommy Tanks then hit his second homer of the game as he hit a three-run bomb to right to make it 12-1 after three innings.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] hit an RBI triple down the left field line to score [autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag] and Morgan hit an RBI single to right to score Kling and make it 14-1. In the bottom of the fifth, [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] hit a two-run homer to right field, Neal scored on a wild pitch, and [autotag]Josh Stevenson[/autotag] and [autotag]Jack Merrifield[/autotag] scored on a two-RBI double by [autotag]Ethan Frey[/autotag] to make it 19-1 LSU.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] hit an RBI single to score [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag], [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] got an RBI on a sacrifice fly, Stevenson hit an RBI single, Merrifield got an RBI on a sacrifice fly, Frey hit an RBI single to left and then scored on a wild pitch, and Beloso hit an RBI single to right field to make it 26-1 as we headed to the seventh inning.

[autotag]Bryce Collins[/autotag] stayed on the mound to try to get the final three outs, but the inning didn’t go as planned as the Blue Devils scored three more runs on him. Eventually, the Tigers won big over Central Connecticut. The Tigers will play Central Connecticut State tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT in the third game of the weekend.

LSU exorcises Demons in final regular season home game

LSU got a big win in its final tune-up of the season before it travels to play Vanderbilt this weekend.

LSU was bound and determined to make sure the home fans went home happy in what could be the last baseball game at Alex Box Stadium this year. The Tigers did that with a 19-7 win over the Demons of Northwestern State.

In the top of the first inning, the Demons struck first when they scored a run off an LSU error to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, LSU rode into battle on a white horse and flipped the script as they scored three runs on two errors by Northwestern State to make it 3-1 Tigers headed to the second inning.

The Tigers added five more runs in the bottom of the second inning as [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] both hit an RBI single, [autotag]Tyler McManus[/autotag] hit a two-RBI single, and [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] had a sacrifice fly for an RBI to make it 8-1.

You would think that, at that point, the rout was on. You would be wrong. In the top of the third inning, Northwestern State came roaring back with a two-run homer followed by a three-run homer to cut the lead to 8-6 headed to the bottom of the inning.

Over the next three innings, the Tigers would scratch across four more runs as Morgan hit an RBI single, Jobert hit a solo homer, Crews walked with bases loaded, and [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] hit an RBI single to make it 12-6 Tigers headed to the sixth inning.

LSU wasn’t satisfied with just doubling the Demons’ score, they decided to blow the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth inning as LSU scored seven runs.

Morgan walked with bases loaded, Doughty was hit by a pitch with bases loaded, and then [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] stepped up to the plate and cleared the bases with a grand slam. Jobert then hit a homer for the seventh and final run of the inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, Northwestern State scored the game’s final run on an RBI single to make the final 19-7 LSU. With the win, LSU moves to 34-18 overall.

The Tigers will hit the road to Nashville for the final SEC series of the regular season against the Vanderbilt Commodores. Currently, LSU and Vandy are tied for the No. 5 seed in the SEC Tournament so seeding in Hoover, as well as in the NCAA Tournament, will be on the line.

LSU bats lead rally in Game 1 win over Mississippi State

LSU started its road series on a high note.

LSU entered Friday’s Game 1 against Mississippi State looking to get back on the right track in SEC play after dropping the series to Auburn last week.

Usually, [autotag]Blake Money[/autotag] gets the start on Friday nights, but things have changed, as it was a “Mike Night.” [autotag]Ma’Khail Hilliard[/autotag] got the start on the mound, and, just like he has been the past couple of weeks, he had another incredible start.

His performance and some timely offense led the Tigers to a 5-2 win over the Bulldogs to get a head start in the series.

Hilliard pitched six full innings only allowing two runs with five strikeouts. In the top of the fourth inning, LSU struck first as [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] scored on a [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs took the lead as they scored on a two-RBI single to take their first lead of the game 2-1. Going into the top of the ninth inning, LSU only had three hits and left seven runners on base, but all they needed was one run to tie the game and two to take the lead.

Tre Morgan, facing a 1-1 count with runners on second and third laced a fastball up the middle to score Stevenson and Travinski as the Tigers took a 3-2 lead.

LSU baseball gets back in the win column against Grambling

The Tigers had an offensive explosion in a Tuesday night win.

After another 2-2 week and a series loss to Auburn, LSU needed a bounce-back heading into a midweek contest against Grambling on Tuesday night. It got back in the win column as the Tigers won 16-3 in a game that was called early after seven innings with a run rule.

However, things did not start out well for LSU in this one, and it looked like it could be heading for a tough game. Grambling scored two runs on Grant Taylor in the top of the first to take an early lead. But in the bottom of the first, LSU tied the game with a two-run home run by [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag].

In the bottom of the second, LSU scored four more runs as [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] hit a solo homer, [autotag]Collier Cranford[/autotag] scored on a fielding error, and [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] hit a two-RBI double to score [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] and Berry and increase the lead to 6-2.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the LSU offense erupted as it scored a whopping nine runs. It started out with a [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] RBI single, followed by a Travinski two-run homer, a two-run [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] missile, a [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] RBI single, a Thompson RBI single, and a two-RBI Cranford single to make it 15-2.

In the top of the fifth, Grambling scored an unearned run after an LSU error to make it 15-3. In the bottom of the sixth, [autotag]Josh Stevenson[/autotag] scored on a passed ball to make it 16-3.

With the win, LSU moves to 20-9 on the year and their next game will be in Starkville, Mississippi, as they take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs Friday at 7 pm.

LSU evens the series with Auburn with a big win in Game 2

LSU dominated on Friday night to set up a decisive Game 3 at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday.

LSU came into Friday night’s Game 2 looking to rebound after Thursday’s tough one-run loss to Auburn. A big offensive performance allowed the right Tigers to even up the series heading into Sunday’s rubber match.

If [autotag]Ma’Khail Hilliard[/autotag] keeps pitching like he has been lately, “Mike Day” will become a Baton Rouge holiday. The fifth-year senior came out and absolutely shoved Friday as he pitched 5.1 innings giving up four hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts.

That is a very welcome sight for all Tiger fans and especially coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag]. Offensively, things started just as they did last night with a home run in the bottom of the first inning, this time by [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag].

 

In the bottom of the fifth, [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] added to the lead with an RBI double that scored [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag].

That was followed by an RBI single from Crews to plate Doughty and make it 3-0 LSU after five full innings.

Auburn finally got on the board in the top of the seventh as they scored two runs to cut the lead to 3-2. LSU gained some breathing room again in the bottom of the seventh thanks to [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag], [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag], Crews, [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] and [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] to make it 8-2 LSU.

In the bottom of the eighth, Travinski scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-2 as heading into the final inning. [autotag]Trent Vietmeier[/autotag] came in to pitch the top of the ninth and he was able to retire Auburn without allowing a run.

Saturday’s decisive Game 3 is scheduled for tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT.

LSU baseball falls at home in Game 1 against Auburn

The Tigers’ comeback effort fell short as they sit in a 0-1 hole against Auburn.

LSU entered Thursday night’s series opener against the Auburn Tigers riding a three-game winning streak after it beat the Florida Gators twice in Gainesville and then shellacked UL-Monroe 15-4 on Tuesday.

It seemed that the Tigers were starting to figure things out under first-year coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag], but that progress was interrupted against Auburn as they fell 6-5 despite a late comeback bid.

[autotag]Blake Money[/autotag] got the start on the mound for Game 1 of the weekend series against AU, and LSU started things off right with a [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] homer in the bottom of the first to take the early lead in a battle between SEC West foes.

Things remained quiet until [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] continued his hot streak with his own solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 2-0 LSU.

However, it all fell apart in the top of the fifth.

With bases loaded and two outs, Auburn got a two-RBI single on a ball that bounced over Tre Morgan’s head at first. That tied the game 2-2. The next batter hit a three-run home run, and in the blink of an eye, it was 5-2 Auburn.

It scored again on an error by Doughty to make it 6-2 for the wrong Tigers heading to the bottom of the inning. In the bottom of the eighth inning, LSU was able to cut into the Auburn lead as [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] blasted a two-run shot to right field to make it 6-4.

In the bottom of the ninth, LSU scored a run on a sacrifice fly by [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] to cut the lead to 6-5 with Morgan standing on second base as the tying run, but [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag] struck out for out No. 2.

In stepped [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] with a chance to tie or win the game, and he flew out to right field.

LSU will play Game 2 against Auburn tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT at Alex Box Stadium.

LSU baseball dominates Louisiana-Monroe, extends winning streak to 3

It’s Brayden Jobert’s world, and we’re all just living in it.

“YOU CAN PUCKER UP AND KISS THAT BABY GOODBYE! HE’S HOTTER THAN A FIRE ANT ON A FEVER BLISTER! Jobert, swinging it like Excalibur right now,” play-by-play commentator Lyn Rollins proclaimed during Tuesday night’s game against Louisiana-Monroe.

It is truly Brayden Jobert’s world; we are all just living in it. Facing the Warhawks at Alex Box Stadium, the Tigers picked up right where they left off on Sunday.

[autotag]Tyrann Mathieu[/autotag] was back in the bayou to make the first pitch, and that was the start of a great night for LSU as it pushed its winning streak to three games with a dominant 15-4 win heading into a weekend series against the Auburn Tigers.

In the top of the first inning, ULM hit a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead, but that was the last sliver of hope it would get in this game. In the bottom of the inning, the scoring spree started for the Tigers. First, [autotag]Josh Berry[/autotag] tied the game up on an RBI single.

LSU blows out Florida again, wins first SEC series of the year

The Tigers’ bats came alive once again in the rubber match against the Gators.

Today was the rubber match between the Tigers and the Florida Gators. UF won Friday while LSU won Saturday. The Gators were looking for their second SEC series win in a row and LSU was looking for their first conference series win.

[autotag]Samuel Dutton[/autotag] got his first collegiate start, and he was magnificent. He pitched 3.2 innings allowing zero runs on one hit, three walks, and a strikeout. In what has been a very chippy series for both teams, LSU has been able to capitalize on their emotions in an 11-2, series-clinching win.

In the top of the fourth inning, LSU got the scoring started with a two-run [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] bomb to make it 2-0.

[autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] followed that with a massive two-run homer of his own to make it 4-0.

With the win, LSU moves to 17-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The Tigers play again Tuesday night against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks before starting a series against Auburn at home on Friday.
