LSU baseball dominates Louisiana-Monroe, extends winning streak to 3

It’s Brayden Jobert’s world, and we’re all just living in it.

“YOU CAN PUCKER UP AND KISS THAT BABY GOODBYE! HE’S HOTTER THAN A FIRE ANT ON A FEVER BLISTER! Jobert, swinging it like Excalibur right now,” play-by-play commentator Lyn Rollins proclaimed during Tuesday night’s game against Louisiana-Monroe.

It is truly Brayden Jobert’s world; we are all just living in it. Facing the Warhawks at Alex Box Stadium, the Tigers picked up right where they left off on Sunday.

[autotag]Tyrann Mathieu[/autotag] was back in the bayou to make the first pitch, and that was the start of a great night for LSU as it pushed its winning streak to three games with a dominant 15-4 win heading into a weekend series against the Auburn Tigers.

In the top of the first inning, ULM hit a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead, but that was the last sliver of hope it would get in this game. In the bottom of the inning, the scoring spree started for the Tigers. First, [autotag]Josh Berry[/autotag] tied the game up on an RBI single.

Second, Jobert hit a three-RBI double to make it 4-1.

Third, [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit an RBI double, and last, [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] hit an RBI single to make the score 6-1 LSU after one inning. The Tigers would get on the board again in the bottom of the third when Dugas hit a solo home run to left field to make it 7-1.

In the top of the fourth, [autotag]Cale Lansville[/autotag] came in to pitch and he surrendered three Warhawk runs to make it 7-4 after four innings. LSU scored again in the bottom of the sixth when Jobert hit a solo homer to make it 8-4.

That was followed by a [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] sacrifice fly to make it 9-4 after six innings. In the bottom of the seventh, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] scored on a past ball and Jobert hit yet another home run. This time, it was a three-run shot to make it 13-4 LSU after seven innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, [autotag]Drew Bianco[/autotag] was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score another run, and [autotag]Jack Merrifield[/autotag] hit a sacrifice fly to make it 15-4 headed to the top of the ninth. [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] came in to finish the game on the mound in the ninth and worked a quick 1-2-3 inning.

With the win, LSU moves to 18-7 on the year and 3-3 in conference play. It will play the Auburn Tigers at home starting this Thursday, with the first pitch of Game 1 scheduled for 6 p.m. CT at The Box.

LSU collapses in 9th inning again, drops revenge game vs. Louisiana Tech

The Tigers couldn’t avenge a loss to the Bulldogs in an extra-innings duel.

I wrote an article earlier this week discussing how the LSU starting pitchers had an awful 10.88 ERA last weekend against Texas A&M. Coach Jay Johnson said he was going to reevaluate the whole pitching staff to try and solve the issue.

As far as Thursday night’s rematch against Louisiana Tech, who won in Ruston earlier in the season, goes, the problem was still a huge issue in a 7-6 extra-innings loss in Baton Rouge.

Will Helmers got the start on the mound for LSU and he only pitched one inning while giving up five hits, four runs, two walks and two strikeouts. That equals an ERA of 36.00 for tonight.

Trent Vietmeier came in to replace him, but at that point, the Tigers were down 3-0 with the bases loaded. The Bulldogs scored another run on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 after one inning. After that, everyone settled down until the bottom of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Tre Morgan hit a two-RBI double that scored Tyler McManus and Gavin Dugas to cut the lead in half.

That was followed up by Dylan Crews hitting an RBI triple to score Morgan and cut the lead to 4-3.

Jacob Berry then reached on a throwing error and got an RBI as Crews scored to tie the game at 4-4.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Morgan came up clutch again as he hit an RBI single to score Dugas and give LSU their first lead of the ballgame. In the bottom of the eighth, Dugas hit an RBI single to score Jordan Thompson and make it 6-4 LSU as we headed to the treacherous final inning.

Paul Gervase stayed on the mound for the ninth inning and the first batter he faced reached base on a throwing error. Eric Reyzelman was called out of the bullpen to pitch after that sequence. He proceeded to walk the first batter he faced.

So, Louisiana Tech had runners on first and second with no one out in the top of the ninth. A wild pitch moved both runners to second and third base with no outs still. Reyzelman walked the current batter and bases were loaded for the bulldogs.

He walked the next batter to score a run and make it 6-5 Tigers. He was then replaced by Devin Fontenot who got a double play against the first batter, but a run scored in the process to tie the game at 6-6. He then struck out the next batter.

LSU was retired 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth and it was time for free baseball in Baton Rouge. In the top of the 12th inning, Ty Floyd walked home a run with the bases loaded to give Tech a 7-6 lead. In the bottom of the twelfth, LSU had runners on second and third with two outs and Jobert struck out to end the game.

LSU baseball’s game against Louisiana Tech rescheduled

The Tigers’ Tuesday night game against Louisiana Tech has been moved to Wednesday night

Due to the threat of inclement weather, Tuesday night’s baseball game against Louisiana Tech that was originally scheduled for tonight has been postponed and rescheduled for Wednesday night with the first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. CT.

LSU is looking to avenge an earlier 11-6 loss to the Bulldogs in Ruston, Louisiana. The Tigers are coming off of a 2-2 week where they dropped a conference series to the Texas A&M Aggies at home. The team will play the Bulldogs tomorrow before traveling to Gainsville, Florida, for a weekend series against the Gators starting on Friday.

The Gators will come into the series ranked No. 8 in the nation after winning their first conference series in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, last weekend. LSU will enter Wednesday night’s game with a record of 15-5 and ranked as the No. 18 team in the nation.

The pitching matchup, as well as the lineup, is TBD as coach Jay Johnson has stated that, after last weekend, he is going to re-evaluate every aspect of the team.

How to watch LSU baseball’s midweek rematch against Louisiana Tech

Here’s how you can follow the Tigers’ midweek revenge game against the Bulldogs.

It will be a revenge game for the Tigers in their midweek bout on Tuesday night.

Coming off a 1-2 performance in an SEC opening series loss to Texas A&M this past weekend, LSU will look for a win against Louisiana Tech at Alex Box Stadium before hitting the road to face Florida in its next conference series.

The Bulldogs got the better of coach Jay Johnson’s squad in the first matchup between the two teams in Ruston on Feb. 23, handing the Tigers their first loss of the season in an 11-6 affair. Tech now sits at 14-5 and had its seven-game winning streak snapped in its last outing against Texas-San Antonio on Sunday.

LSU desperately needs to avoid another loss, and it will look to flip the script on the Bulldogs with home-field advantage at The Box. Here’s how you can catch the action on Tuesday.

UPDATE: Tuesday night’s game was postponed due to potential severe weather. It has been postponed for Wednesday night.

LSU baseball survive the Green Wave

The Tigers pushed their winning streak to five in a close one against Tulane on Tuesday night.

It was another beautiful night at Alex Box Stadium as LSU came into Tuesday’s game against the Tulane Green Wave after a 4-0 showing last week.

That success continues in this one, though the 7-5 final score was a bit closer than the Tigers would have liked.

Will Helmers got the start on the mound, and the Green Wave got to him early as they chased him from the mound after only 1.2 innings. Helmers was charged with three hits, two runs, and two strikeouts.

Tulane scored on a double and a single to make it 2-0 Green Wave headed to the bottom of the second inning. LSU’s bats remained quiet until the bottom of the third inning. The Tigers found themselves on the good end of a fielding error that led to Gavin Dugas scoring on what should’ve been a routine groundout to first base.

Dylan Crews then followed that up with a sacrifice fly for an RBI to tie the game at 2-2 after three full innings.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the ‘Italian Stallion’ Giovanni DiGiacomo continued his hot streak at the plate with an RBI single to score Cade Doughty.

Tre Morgan followed the DiGiacomo hit with a two-RBI single to score Gio and Jordan Thompson and make it 5-2 Tigers after four full innings.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Morgan struck again as he hit a sacrifice fly to score Thompson to extend the lead to 6-2 LSU after six innings. With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, an error came back to bite the Tigers as Dugas dropped a fly ball, and two runs scored to cut the LSU lead to 6-4 after seven innings.

In the top of the eighth inning, Devin Fontenot came into the game and gave up a run on a wild pitch to make it 6-5 Tigers. After another wild pitch, the Green Wave had a man on third with only one out. Baumgardt hit a ball to Gio in right field, and he made a great catch and gunned the runner down at home to keep the LSU lead at one as we headed to the bottom of the eighth.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Josh Pearson came in as a pinch hitter and proceeded to rope an RBI double down the first-base line to score Bianco from first and give LSU a little bit of breathing room as we headed to the ninth inning. Devin Fontenot then calmed the tides in the top of the ninth to secure the 7-5 LSU win.

With the win, LSU increases its win streak to five games in a row. The Tigers will start conference play against Texas A&M this Friday night with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT. LSU was led at the plate by Morgan, Gio, and Thompson who all went 2 for 4 today. Eric Reyzelman (1-0) was credited for the win and Fontenot (1) was credited with the save.

LSU baseball gets back to its winning ways against McNeese State

The Tigers snapped their two-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over McNeese State on Wednesday night.

Coming off of a 1-2 week at the Shriners College Classic, head coach Jay Johnson and the LSU Tigers were in need of a pick-me-up game to get them back in the groove.

They got just that on Wednesday night when they played the McNeese State Cowboys at The Box. Will Helmers got the start on the mound for LSU and pitched three innings only allowing one hit, zero runs, two walks, and three strikeouts in a 6-3 Tigers win.

In the bottom of the second inning, Gavin Dugas got the party started for LSU as he hit a two-run homer to right field that scored Jordan Thompson to make it 2-0 Tigers.

In the top of the fourth inning, Grant Taylor came in to pitch for the Tigers and gave up two hits, two strikeouts, and an earned run on a wild pitch. It was 2-1 LSU until the bottom of the seventh inning when the No. 1 prospect in college baseball, Jacob Berry, stepped up to the plate and sent a Berry Blast to right field to extend the lead to 3-1 and give the Tigers some breathing room.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Dylan Crews hit into a fielder’s choice with bases loaded to score Drew Bianco and extend the lead to 4-1. Berry followed that with a double to right field that scored Crews and Tyler McManus to make the lead 6-1 Tigers heading into the top of the ninth.

Paul Gervase remained on the mound for the third inning in a row to try and close out the game, but after getting one out, two straight walks chased him from the game as he was replaced by Trent Vietmeier.

Vietmeier came in with one out and runners on first and second and proceeded to get the first guy out on a popup but then gave up a two-RBI single to cut the lead to 6-3. Both runs were charged to Gervase.

But Vietmeier fielded a ground ball to get the final out of the game as the Tigers ended a two-game losing streak. Will Hellmers (2-0) got the win on the mound for LSU and the Tigers were led at the plate by Gavin Dugas who finished the night 3-3 with two RBI and a homer.

With the win, LSU improves to 10-3 on the year. This weekend, the Tigers will play a three-game series against Bethune-Cookman with the first game being Friday at 6:30 p.m. CST in Baton Rouge. Blake Money will be the starting pitcher for Game 1.

LSU baseball’s game against McNeese State postponed

The Tigers’ Tuesday night game against the Cowboys has been delayed to Wednesday due to inclement weather in the area.

LSU needs some positives from its baseball team after a 1-2 weekend at the Shriners College Classic in Houston, where the Tigers fell in back-to-back games to the No. 1 Texas Longhorns and the Baylor Bears following a thrilling walk-off win over Oklahoma on Friday. However, it looks like the Tigers are going to have to wait to avenge their two-game losing streak.

Tuesday night’s scheduled game against the McNeese State Cowboys has been postponed as a result of a significant rain forecast in the Baton Rouge area.

The game will now instead be played on Wednesday night at Alex Box Stadium. The time is still set for 6:30 p.m. CST.

Hopefully, the rain will stay away on Wednesday and the Tigers can get back to their winning ways against the Cowboys. See you at The Box.

Tigers start the week off with a win over New Orleans

LSU baseball took down the Privateers 11-3 on Wednesday night to win its fifth-straight game.

This is a huge week for LSU baseball as the Tigers prepare for the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic this weekend. Before going toe-to-toe with Oklahoma, No. 1 Texas, and Baylor, LSU got to warm up with New Orleans at Alex Box Stadium this evening, in which it earned an 11-3 win.

Garrett Edwards got the start on the mound for LSU, and in the first inning, the Privateers scored a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 headed to the bottom of the first. In that frame, LSU came out swinging and let its starting pitcher know that it had his back.

Tre Morgan reached base on an error, Dylan Crews was hit by a pitch, and Cade Doughty hit an RBI double to score Morgan. A passed ball then scored Crews, and Doughty scored on a Jordan Thompson double play. At the end of the first, LSU led 3-1.

In the top of the second inning, Edwards was pulled from the game after only pitching one inning giving up three hits, two walks, and two earned runs. Grant Taylor came in to pitch for the Tigers and got three quick outs. In the bottom of the second, Gavin Dugas and Alex Milazzo walked leading to a Morgan RBI double followed by a Crews RBI single, and a Doughty RBI groundout scored Morgan to make the score 6-2 LSU.

In the top of the fourth inning, Riley Cooper came in to pitch. Taylor’s final line was two innings pitched, zero hits, zero runs, two walks, and two strikeouts. In the bottom of the fifth, Jacob Berry hit a blast to right field to make it 7-1 Tigers thru five innings.

In the top of the sixth, Bryce Collins came in to pitch for the Tigers. The final line on Cooper was 2.1 innings with zero hits, zero runs, and one strikeout. In the bottom of the seventh, LSU added on to their lead with a Doughty dinger, a Thompson RBI double, a McManus sacrifice fly, and a Morgan RBI single to make it 11-2 Tigers. In the top of the eighth inning, Paul Gervase came in to pitch for the Tigers.

The final line on Collins was 1.2 innings pitched with zero hits, zero runs, and one strikeout. New Orleans scored a run on a fielding error to make it 11-3. In the top of the ninth, Eric Reyzelman came in to finish the game and pitched one inning allowing zero hits, zero runs, and two strikeouts.

Grant Taylor (1-0) got the win and the Tigers were led at the plate by Morgan and Crews who both went 2 for 4.

LSU will begin the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic this Friday afternoon against Oklahoma from Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m CST.
