Instant Analysis: LSU men’s basketball ends non-conference play on a high note vs. Northwestern State

The Tigers’ offense came up big in a beatdown against the Demons.

Non-conference play didn’t exactly go according to plan for the Tigers, but they wrapped up their slate in a nice way against a struggling Northwestern State team on Friday night in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

It was a textbook offensive game from LSU in a 96-55 win. The Tigers shot 61% from the field for the game and had six players score in double figures.

True freshman guard [autotag]Mike Williams III[/autotag] was the star, scoring 20 points. [autotag]Will Baker[/autotag] wasn’t too far behind him, scoring 17 in the win, and it was another notable performance from [autotag]Jalen Cook[/autotag], who scored 13 points in his third appearance of the season.

Northwestern State, meanwhile, had a ton of issues on offense, shooting below 40% as a team while turning the ball over 20 times. Despite the rebounding margin being relatively even, the Demons struggled to defend the interior, giving up 50 points in the paint.

After taking care of business and moving to 8-5 on the year, LSU will now begin SEC play with a big-time matchup as it hits the road to take on Texas A&M on Jan. 6.

Kim Mulkey addresses ejection in LSU women’s basketball’s win over Northwestern State

“I’ve been tossed before,” Mulkey said. “It was time.”

In the fourth quarter of LSU’s 81-36 blowout win over Northwestern State on Sunday, coach [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] was ejected following a heated exchange with the officials.

Forward [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag] was called for a charge while driving to the basket, and Mulkey wasn’t pleased. After voicing her frustrations, she was hit with a pair of technical fouls and was ultimately tossed from the game.

Following the win, Mulkey addressed the ejection with reporters, but she didn’t seem too concerned about it.

“I’ve been tossed before,” she said, per On3. “It was time.”

LSU has won 11 games in a row since it lost its season opener to Colorado in Las Vegas, and it will take the court one more time before the holidays as it travels to Baltimore to take on Coppin State on Wednesday night.

Instant Analysis: LSU women’s basketball easily dispatches Northwestern State in 11th-straight win

The Tigers rolled against another in-state opponent on Sunday afternoon.

It wasn’t quite the 89-point win the Tigers turned in over McNeese on Tuesday night, but LSU rolled against an in-state opponent again on Sunday afternoon, taking down Northwestern State in an 81-36 home win.

Coach Kim Mulkey’s team got off to a hot start, leading 19-6 after the first quarter and 34-15 at halftime. It was an elite game defensively for LSU, which held the Demons below 30% shooting from the field for the game.

It also dominated on the boards, winning the rebounding battle 50-26.

The offense, however, did leave a bit to be desired. The Tigers shot just 32.4% in the first half, though that improved in the second half as they shot above 50%.

[autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] was the biggest offensive bright spot as she led the team with 25 points and registered a double-double with 14 rebounds. [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag] (16 points, 14 rebounds) also had a double-double.

With the win, the Tigers move to 11-1 on the season with two more games left before SEC play begins. Next up is a road contest against Coppin State on Wednesday night as Reese returns to her home town of Baltimore.

How to watch No. 7 LSU women’s basketball host Northwestern State on Sunday

The Tigers take on another in-state opponent after a 133-44 beatdown against McNeese earlier this week.

Fresh off the most lopsided win in program history as LSU’s women’s basketball team also set a school record for scoring in a 133-44 win over McNeese on Tuesday night, the Tigers will return to the court on Sunday for another matchup against an in-state opponent.

Northwestern State comes to the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, and LSU looks to extend its win streak to 11 games against a Demons team that sits at 4-5 on the year. It’s coming off a loss to Louisiana-Monroe, but it had previously won four in a row after starting the season 0-4.

Here’s everything you need to know to watch as LSU looks to move to 11-1 on the season.

LSU gets back in the win column with a run-rule victory over Northwestern State

LSU responded well after losing the No. 1 spot in the rankings this week.

For the first time this season, the LSU Tigers entered a game not ranked as the No. 1 team in the country. The Tigers played as if all the pressure was off as they beat Northwestern State 14-4 in a run-rule victory on Tuesday night.

Northwestern State scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning, but after that, the rout was on. In the bottom of the second, LSU hit back-to-back-to-back homers. [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag], [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag], and [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] hit those homers to give LSU a 3-1 lead after two innings.

Northwestern State answered with a solo homer of their own in the top of the third to cut the lead to 3-2, but LSU would score 7 in the bottom of the inning due to a White single, Travinski hit by pitch, [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] two-RBI single, and a three-run bomb by [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] to make it 10-2.

LSU and Northwestern State traded blows in the bottom of the fifth and the top of the sixth before the Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-RBI double from White and an RBI double by Travinski to make it 14-3. In the top of the seventh, Northwestern State scored a run but that is all they could manage as the Tigers won 14-4 in seven innings.

With the win, LSU moves to 38-10 overall. The Tigers will host Mississippi State at Alex Box Stadium this weekend. The first pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT on Friday night.

How to watch as No. 2 LSU baseball hosts Northwestern State for Tuesday night action at The Box

The Tigers will look to bounce back from a series loss to Auburn on Tuesday night.

The Tigers return to Alex Box Stadium on Tuesday night licking their wounds after suffering their first series loss on the road against Auburn.

LSU (37-10) spent the entire year as the unanimous No. 1 seed, but coach Jay Johnson’s team has now dropped in the polls following a series defeat and losses in two of the last three midweek games. It will hope to replicate last week’s run-rule win over Southeastern Louisiana as it plays host to Northwestern State (25-20) on Tuesday night.

The Demons enter this one at just 10-8 in Southland Conference play, and they’re coming off a 2-1 series loss on the road against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

LSU will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday night at The Box. Here’s what you need to know to follow that one.

LSU exorcises Demons in final regular season home game

LSU got a big win in its final tune-up of the season before it travels to play Vanderbilt this weekend.

LSU was bound and determined to make sure the home fans went home happy in what could be the last baseball game at Alex Box Stadium this year. The Tigers did that with a 19-7 win over the Demons of Northwestern State.

In the top of the first inning, the Demons struck first when they scored a run off an LSU error to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, LSU rode into battle on a white horse and flipped the script as they scored three runs on two errors by Northwestern State to make it 3-1 Tigers headed to the second inning.

The Tigers added five more runs in the bottom of the second inning as [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] both hit an RBI single, [autotag]Tyler McManus[/autotag] hit a two-RBI single, and [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] had a sacrifice fly for an RBI to make it 8-1.

You would think that, at that point, the rout was on. You would be wrong. In the top of the third inning, Northwestern State came roaring back with a two-run homer followed by a three-run homer to cut the lead to 8-6 headed to the bottom of the inning.

Over the next three innings, the Tigers would scratch across four more runs as Morgan hit an RBI single, Jobert hit a solo homer, Crews walked with bases loaded, and [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] hit an RBI single to make it 12-6 Tigers headed to the sixth inning.

LSU wasn’t satisfied with just doubling the Demons’ score, they decided to blow the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth inning as LSU scored seven runs.

Morgan walked with bases loaded, Doughty was hit by a pitch with bases loaded, and then [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] stepped up to the plate and cleared the bases with a grand slam. Jobert then hit a homer for the seventh and final run of the inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, Northwestern State scored the game’s final run on an RBI single to make the final 19-7 LSU. With the win, LSU moves to 34-18 overall.

The Tigers will hit the road to Nashville for the final SEC series of the regular season against the Vanderbilt Commodores. Currently, LSU and Vandy are tied for the No. 5 seed in the SEC Tournament so seeding in Hoover, as well as in the NCAA Tournament, will be on the line.

Chazz Martinez snags Dick Howser Trophy National Pitcher of the Week

OU lefty Chazz Martinez racked up 14 strikeouts against Northwestern State to earn the Dick Howser Trophy National Pitcher of the Week.

Chazz Martinez had himself a big-league day inside a big-league ballpark at Globe Life Field against Northwestern State. Martinez struck out 14 Northwestern State batters in 7.0 shutout innings in the Sooners’ 5-1 Sunday series-clinching victory.

The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced Tuesday that the 6-foot-3, 210 pound lefty earned the Dick Howser Trophy National Pitcher of the Week for his performance.

It was the most strikeouts for an OU pitcher since Levi Prater registered 15 strikeouts against Missouri State back in 2019. The San Pedro, Calif., native didn’t allow a runner past second base in the game and struck out six consecutive batters in the second and third innings. The last time a Sooner pitcher struck out six straight was when Jake Irvin did so against Oklahoma State in 2018.

Martinez was also named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week and one of Collegiate Baseball’s National Players of the Week for his work against the Demons.

“Chazz set the tone, and with the two-run homer it made it a little bit easier for him to go out and keep competing pitch to pitch. I thought he was really competitive today. It was really good to get some runs early for him, instead of just grinding it out. We’re going to keep playing offense and keep practicing at it, and it should come around,” Oklahoma head baseball coach Skip Johnson said after the Sunday win.

After two starts this season, Martinez is 1-0, has registered 19 strikeouts against just one walk, has only surrendered seven hits and one unearned run.

OU heads to the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic at Minute Maid Park in Houston with a 5-2 record. The Sooners open the event on Friday at 3 p.m. against LSU, play UCLA on Saturday at 11 a.m. and finish off the weekend versus Tennessee at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Oklahoma baseball’s Chazz Martinez earned player of the week honors after impressive outing

After fanning 14 Northwestern State Demons Sunday to clinch the series, Chazz Martinez earned player of the week honors.

The 2022 season has gotten off to a nice start for the 5-2 Oklahoma Sooners. They picked up wins over Auburn, Michigan, and Wichita State before a weekend series win over Northwestern State.

In the deciding game Sunday night, Chazz Martinez was the difference in the Sooners 5-1 win. He threw seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits, and one walk while striking out 14 for the first win of his Oklahoma career.

For his efforts, Martinez was named the Big 12 player of the week and Collegiate Baseball’s National player of the week.

According to SoonerSports.com, Martinez’s 14 strikeouts were the most since 2019. On the season, Martinez has thrown 11.2 innings and is allowing opposing batters to hit .171. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in through his first two appearances, first going 4.2 innings in Oklahoma’s win over Michigan.

The Oklahoma Sooners next travel to Houston for a weekend series against LSU, UCLA, and Tennessee in the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children College Classic. Oklahoma will return home March 8 to take on Dallas Baptist University in their home opener.

Where does Joe Lunardi project OU Men’s Basketball in his preseason Bracketology?

With the start of the season tonight, where does ESPN’s Joe Lunardi have the Sooners finishing in his preseason Bracketology projections?

A new era of Oklahoma Sooners basketball begins tonight at Lloyd Noble Arena as the Oklahoma Sooners get set to take on the Northwestern State Demons.

Porter Moser takes over for Lon Kruger, who helped the Sooners reach the NCAA Tournament seven times in his 10 seasons at the helm. In 2015-2016, Kruger helped lead the Buddy Hield Oklahoma Sooners to as high as No. 1 in the AP Top 25 and a Final Four appearance.

Moser is coming off an impressive season himself, taking the Loyola (Chicago) to a regular season and tournament conference championship and an elite eight run in the NCAA Tournament.

As the Sooners get set to tip-off, all of the changes have ESPN’s Joe Lunardi skeptical that Oklahoma can return to the NCAA Tournament in the 2021-2022 season. In Lunardi’s first Bracketology of the college basketball season, he has Oklahoma on the outside looking in as one of his first four out.

Of course, these are just the initial tournament projections. The Oklahoma Sooners have a talented team to open the season with a really good coach. Navigating a deep Big 12 conference will be challenging, but Oklahoma made noise last year.

Despite the losses of Austin Reaves (NBA) and Brady Manek (transfer portal), the Sooners restocked with experienced players who should be able to step right in and help lead this team back to the NCAA Tournament. Tanner and Jacob Groves, Jordan Goldwire, Marvin Johnson, and Ethan Chargois have played a lot of minutes in NCAA basketball. Add that group to Umoja Gibson and Elijah Harkless, who were big-time contributors for the Sooners last season, and this team has the makeup to make some noise in the Big 12 and the nation.

It’s an exciting time for Oklahoma Sooners basketball, and it all gets started tonight at 7 p.m. at Lloyd Noble Arena.
