What is wrong with LSU baseball?

The 2024 season has not gotten off to the best start for the Tigers.

The 2024 season has not gotten off to the best start for the LSU baseball team. After three conference series, the Tigers are 20-9 overall and 2-7 in conference play and have lost all three series. The Tigers dropped series to Mississippi State and Florida 2-1 and then got swept by Arkansas last weekend.

So, what is going on with this team? For one, let’s rewind to the 2023 season. [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] and the LSU Tigers had the two best players in college baseball on their team, [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] and [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag]. The No. 1 and No. 2 overall draft picks in the 2023 MLB draft.

Along with that, the team had [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag], [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag], [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag], [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag], [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] and [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag]. That equates to two out of three starting pitchers, first and second base, shortstop, designated hitter, and two of the three outfield spots. One outfield spot ([autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag]), one starting pitcher ([autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag]), and two catchers ([autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] and [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag]) were all that remained from last year’s starting lineup.

Replacing six hitters in your starting lineup and two of your starting pitchers is not an easy task. Johnson had to hit the recruiting trail hard for high school kids and players in the transfer portal. He did a great job of rebuilding the team, but some players you just can’t replace. There is no replacement for those guys.

With that out of the way, let’s take a look at some stats so far. LSU is in the middle of the road for most hitting statistics in the conference. The Tigers are seventh in the conference in batting average, on-base percentage, and hits, eighth in slugging percentage, doubles, and triples. The biggest issue for LSU on the offensive side is that we are ranked 11th out of 14 in RBI and runs scored. LSU is not hitting the long ball as well either as the Tigers rank ninth in that stat.

Three more interesting offensive stats, LSU ranks first in the conference in double plays and caught stealing. First in those areas is not a good thing. That means you have hit the most double plays and been caught stealing the most. [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] leads the conference in double plays. He has hit into eight of them. That’s three more than the next closest player.

Now, let’s look at the Tigers’ performance on the mound. [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] is the silver lining of this pitching staff. Without him, you would not want to see any of these numbers. Holman has the second-lowest ERA (1.38), second-highest strikeouts (61), and fourth-lowest opponent batting average (.173). Why am I singling him out? Because if you take him out of the equation, LSU does not have another pitcher in the top 15 of the conference.

LSU has the MOST walks in the SEC (131) and the second most wild pitches in the SEC (28). [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] is tied for the most losses in the conference with four and three LSU pitchers are tied for sixth in the conference in wild pitches with four. ([autotag]Kade Anderson[/autotag], [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag] and Hurd)

LSU is sixth in the conference in fielding percentage but [autotag]Michael Braswell III[/autotag] is tied for first for the most errors in the conference with seven. Those numbers will not get the job done, especially in conference play.

LSU will play Southern at home on Monday before hosting Vanderbilt this weekend.

Nationals top prospect Dylan Crews wants Jayden Daniels with the Commanders

Dylan Crews hopes to see his fellow LSU alum in Washington soon.

Dylan Crews is an LSU legend. In 2023, Crews led the LSU baseball team to a College World Series championship by hitting .426 with 18 home runs and 70 RBI. Crews’ performance led him to become the No. 2 overall pick of the Washington Nationals in the 2023 Major League Baseball draft.

Crews was assigned the Class-A Fredericksburg Nationals, where he went three for three and was immediately promoted to the Double-AA Harrisburg Senators. Crews had a phenomenal spring, and it’s only a matter of time before he’s roaming the outfield every day at Nationals Park.

Jayden Daniels is another LSU legend. He spent the past two seasons as LSU’s starting quarterback and won the Heisman Trophy in 2023. Daniels is now projected to be a top-five pick in next month’s NFL draft.

The Washington Commanders hold the No. 2 overall pick and need a quarterback. Could Washington bring another LSU product to the nation’s capital with the second pick?

If Crews had his way, Daniels would be in Washington this fall, too.

“We’ve talked a couple times, and I really hope he does (come to DC),” Daniels told the “Grant and Danny” Show on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, via Lou DiPietro of Audacy.

“That’d be pretty cool. Amazing talent. For a dual-threat guy that can run the ball and sling it like he does, I think it would be a perfect fit for here.”

Could two of LSU’s top stars be reuniting in Washington soon? The 2024 NFL draft is less than one month away, and the current odds favor Daniels following Crews to D.C.

WATCH: ‘Crews missiles’ are flying during MLB spring training

Dylan Crews may not be donning the Purple and Gold anymore but he’s still hitting Crews Missiles.

[autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] may not be donning the Purple and Gold anymore but he’s still hitting Crews Missiles. Crews was the No. 2 pick in the 2024 MLB draft by the Washington Nationals and has been chosen to participate in spring training with the Major League squad.

This does not mean that Crews will make the major league team in his first season, though. Crews is the new kid on the block for the Nationals and the future of their franchise. The organization will use that angle to sell tickets for spring training games but also to get Crews some playing time with the big league guys.

It’s likely that Crews would start the season at the Nationals Double-A affiliate, the Harrisburg Senators. If he plays well, he may even start out at the Triple-A affiliate, the Rochester Red Wings. No matter where Crews lands, he will be headed for the majors soon.

WATCH: Dylan Crews throws first pitch as LSU baseball 2024 season opener

The No. 2 pick in the draft made his return to Alex Box Stadium on Friday night.

[autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag], who was selected by the Washington Nationals with the second overall pick in the 2023 MLB draft, may no longer be a part of the Tigers baseball program.

But he’ll always be a part of the LSU family, and he made his return to Alex Box Stadium to christen the 2024 season by throwing out the first pitch on Friday night ahead of an 11-8 win over VMI.

Crews was a three-year starter in the outfield for the Tigers, winning the Golden Spikes Award as the top player in the nation last season as he and top draft pick [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] led the Tigers to a national title, which was their first since 2009.

Crews appeared in 35 minor league games with the Nationals at the end of last season. He was called up from the rookie leagues after just one game, and he made 14 Single-A appearances and 20 Double-A appearances.

He was invited to spring training with Washington as a non-roster invite.

LSU favored to repeat as national champions according to D1Baseball poll

Ninety-nine out of the 251 voters (39.4%) said that LSU would go back-to-back as national champions.

[autotag]D1Baseball[/autotag] asked every college baseball program in the country which team they think will win the 2024 national championship. Of all the colleges questioned, 251 of them responded.

Here is what they had to say.

99 out of the 251 voters (39.4%) said that LSU would go back-to-back as national champions. Three teams other than LSU made the list. Florida, Wake Forest and Arkansas are the three other teams that received votes.

20% of the votes were for Wake Forest, 15% of the votes were for Florida and 0.06% of the votes were for Arkansas. Three out of the four teams are all from the SEC. LSU played Florida in the College World Series final last year and they beat Wake Forest to get the chance to play Florida.

LSU lost the best two players in college baseball last season ([autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] and [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag]) but the Tigers have reloaded via the transfer portal and amazing recruiting classes. It’s shaping up to be another great season in Baton Rouge.

College Sports Wire ranks LSU’s Tommy White as one of the top players in the SEC in 2024

Tommy White returns for his second year in Baton Rouge, and it could be a big one.

The LSU baseball team lost a lot of key pieces from last year’s national title squad, but not all of them.

One of the biggest impact players from that team is back for another season in third baseman [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag]. The preseason All-American should be in for another huge year in his second season in Baton Rouge after coming in as a transfer from NC State.

College Sports Wire’s Matt Melton recently ranked the top 10 players in the SEC for the 2024 campaign, and White ranked second behind only Florida two-way player Jac Caglianone.

Here’s what Melton said about White entering his junior season.

“Tommy Tanks” is back for his second season in Baton Rouge after helping lead the Tigers to their first national championship since 2009 as a First-Team All-SEC selection, among other honors. A 2024 preseason SEC Player of the Year candidate, White slashed .374/.432/.725 with 24 HR and 105 RBI, which tied for the NCAA lead, across 66 games as a sophomore after transferring to LSU from NC State.

With [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] moving on, LSU will need White to have another big year at the plate again for a team that enters as a universal preseason top-five squad despite all it lost.

Where On3 ranks defending champion LSU in preseason SEC baseball power rankings

The Tigers will look to defend their national title in an SEC that’s loaded once again in 2024.

We’re now less than a week away from the start of the 2024 college baseball season.

It will be the third season at LSU under coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag], who captured his first national title last season. Now, the Tigers look to defend that championship after retooling this offseason.

They’ve lost a lot, including top two MLB draft picks [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] and [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag], but they’ve also added elite transfer and recruiting classes to supplement those losses.

LSU enters the year as a preseason top-five team, but it sits just third in On3’s preseason SEC power rankings from Jonathan Wagner, behind Arkansas and Florida.

2023 record: 54-17 (19-10)
2023 finish: National Champions
Preseason Top 25 ranking (D1Baseball): No. 4
Opening weekend: vs. VMI (Friday, Sunday), vs. Central Arkansas (Saturday, Monday)

Even after winning the College World Series last season, LSU doesn’t find itself in the top spot in our preseason SEC baseball power rankings. It’s just nearly impossible to replace Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews, the first and second overall picks in the MLB Draft, in the same offseason. Regardless, though, the Tigers have a very impressive roster. The lineup should be among the nation’s best, while the rotation has some questions. Adding Luke Holman, a transfer from Alabama, to the mix helps, but a big jump will be needed from Thatcher Hurd. Gage Jump, a UCLA transfer that missed all of last season, could be a big addition as well.

LSU will begin what should be another successful season on Friday night against VMI at Alex Box Stadium.

D1Baseball names Tommy White best 3B in the country

Tommy White was named as the best third baseman in the NCAA.

[autotag]D1Baseball[/autotag] recently released their list of the top 50 Third Basemen in college baseball and a current Tiger sits at the top of the list.

[autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] aka Tommy Tanks was named as the best third baseman in the NCAA. It would be hard to argue that there is another player better than him at the hot corner. White burst onto the scene as a Freshman at NC State where he broke the Wolfpack’s record for homers in a single season.

He was mainly a designated hitter for NC State but then he transferred to LSU where [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] placed him at the hot corner. The rest was history. White finished last season with a .374 batting average, .432 on-base percentage, 12 doubles, 24 homers, and 105 RBI.

White was the cleanup hitter who hit behind the best position player in college baseball last year, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag]. If LSU wants to go back-to-back, the Tigers will need White to have another great campaign.

LSU baseball picked to finish second in SEC West by media

The Tigers are a preseason top-five team once again, but the path through the SEC is never easy.

LSU is just over a week away from beginning its national title defense, and while coach Jay Johnson’s team lost a pair of studs in [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] and [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag], as well as several other key contributors, it has retooled this offseason.

The Tigers enter the year as a preseason unanimous top-five team as they return stars like [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] and [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] and added one of the top transfer portal classes in the nation to go with an elite recruiting class.

However, the path won’t be easy. The SEC is loaded again, as always, and the media picked the Tigers to finish second in the West division this season behind another team the media is quite high on.

Here are the full preseason SEC media standings. Note: First-place votes are indicated by parentheses.

Paul Skenes heading to Pirates spring training as a non-roster invite

Paul Skenes will get to work with the big-league club after pitching just 6.2 innings in the minors at the end of last season.

[autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] won’t be the only member of LSU’s 2023 national title team who will get the chance to participate in spring training with the big-league club.

On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced that No. 1 draft pick pitcher [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] would also be getting an invite to spring training as a non-roster invite.

After a dominant season as a transfer at LSU, Skenes was taken as the top pick in the draft and only saw slight minor league work toward the end of the season. He was moved up from the rookie leagues to Single-A after one inning pitched, and after tossing three innings in two games, he got the bump up to Double-A.

The Pirates wanted to manage his workload, and he only pitched 2.2 innings. He struggled more at the Double-A level, allowing four earned runs and an ERA above 13.

Still, this move seemingly indicates some hope that Skenes will make his major league debut by the end of the 2024 season, and like Crews, he will hope to make a strong impression in spring ball.
