‘One Last Time’: Oklahoma, Texas take final ride through the Big 12 in 2023

As week one approaches, 2023 offers “One Last Time” for the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns to play their Big 12 foes.

The Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns are set to embark on their final journey through the Big 12. The flagship institutions will make their move to the SEC officially on July 1, 2024, taking on a new adventure.

Their journey coming over the next few months reminds me of a number from the world-wide sensation, “Hamilton.”

At the end of Washington’s tenure in the musical’s second act, the first president of the United States, played originally by Christopher Jackson, performs a song titled, “One Last Time.” The song acts as a goodbye letter, using Washington’s own words to help move the country along in its early stages.

And in a way, that’s where the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns are. Though they’ve had differing levels of success over the course of the Big 12’s existence, the two programs have acted as figureheads on the national stage for the last 25-plus years.

Oklahoma in particular, with its 14 Big 12 titles, and until TCU in 2022, its only playoff appearances. The branding that comes with the Longhorns and the Sooners helped keep the Big 12 afloat during the realignment a decade ago that saw Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, and Texas A&M disperse for greener pastures. Those schools have found limited success while the Big 12 survived and built a strong brand.

And as the last couple of years have shown, since Oklahoma and Texas were invited to the SEC, the Big 12 has enough cache to be a player on the national level.

In 2021, Oklahoma State was literally inches away from securing a College Football Playoff berth. Had they beaten Baylor, they would have had a great shot at taking the fourth spot in the playoff.

In 2022, Kansas State and TCU played for the Big 12 title. The Wildcats upset the Horned Frogs but it didn’t diminish TCU’s playoff odds.

The Big 12 and its departing Red River members are ready to move on. That’s what the early exit agreement set out to do. There are hard feelings toward Oklahoma and Texas. Brett Yormark’s comments last week to a Texas Tech gathering revealed how he feels about the split. We know the Big 12 schools of the last decade have hard feelings about it.

Well, the 2023 season provides one last time for everyone to take their shot at the conference powers.

The 2023 season also provides one last time for the Sooners and Longhorns to say goodbye to their Big 12 brethren before heading off to the SEC.

Every Notre Dame NFL draft pick since 2000

There have been 102 Notre Dame players drafted since 2000. How many more will hear their names called this week?

Notre Dame’s 21st century didn’t start the way anyone would have liked as the Bob Davie, Tyrone Willingham, and Charlie Weis eras all left something to be desired but the ship changed course under Brian Kelly who led the Irish back to the brink of the greatness that is expected for Notre Dame football.

Since 2000, more than 100 different Notre Dame football players have had their names called in the NFL draft.  Several others have signed as undrafted free agents but we’ll focus on those who were drafted for now.

Last year saw Kyle Hamilton and Kyren Williams have their names called.  This spring Michael Mayer and Isaiah Foskey will certainly hear theirs early, and others will join them in days two and three of the draft.

So who are the 102 who have had their names called since 2000?

Who wound up having the best careers and who didn’t have the career they or you were hoping?

You can almost certainly name plenty but there are some former Notre Dame greats you’ve likely forgotten about as well.  Here are the 102…and counting.

Watch: Kyle Hamilton forces and recovers fumble in NFL playoff debut

Hit Stick!!

It feels like a long time ago that we praised the Baltimore Ravens for not overthinking their 14th overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft and selecting Kyle Hamilton.  The former Notre Dame safety didn’t have a 40-yard dash time that some desired, and fell from being the top-five pick that some thought he might be.

Hamilton had a strong rookie season for the Ravens that came to a close Sunday night as the Bengals bested their division rival in an exciting, one score affair.  In it though, Kyle Hamilton delivered one of the hits and biggest plays of the night as he both forced and recovered a fumble.

Hamilton gets a lot of recognition for his coverage skills and ability to make plays on the ball, but his ability to step up and deliver a big blow can sometimes be overlooked.

Regardless of the Ravens loss, I’m guessing Hamilton’s hit-ability won’t be forgotten the first time the Bengals meet Baltimore next season.

The Bucks promoted Charles Lee to associate head coach and Hamilton fans all made the same joke

Hopefully the Bucks don’t schedule any games in Monmouth

At 37 years old, Charles Lee has made a rather rapid ascension up the NBA coaching ranks.

After playing four years at Bucknell from 2002-06 — then going pro overseas for four more years — Lee started as an assistant at his alma mater before joining Mike Budenholzer’s staff with the Atlanta Hawks in 2014.

When Budenholzer’s Atlanta tenure ended in 2018, Lee followed the coach to the Milwaukee Bucks, where they went on to win an NBA title in 2021. On Saturday, Lee took the next major step in his career as the Bucks reportedly promoted him to associate head coach as a few other teams consider hiring him to run their squad outright.

And all the Internet could do was make jokes from the musical Hamilton.

Marcus Freeman to attend NFL draft

Well, it is draft day.

Just where [autotag]Kyle Hamilton[/autotag] gets selected remains to be seen but the former Notre Dame star will become the latest former Fighting Irish player to have his name called in the NFL draft’s first round on Thursday. When that does, Hamilton’s defensive coordinator for one season will be there as Marcus Freeman will be in attendance as will safeties coach Chris O’Leary.

It will be a busy couple of days for Freeman, who will attend the draft in Vegas on Thursday night and then return to throw out the first pitch at Notre Dame’s home baseball game Friday against Boston College. All the while, you can bet he’s in touch with recruits and his staff.

Yes, the draft in this regards is about Kyle Hamilton but Marcus Freeman is no fool, either.  He is being there to support the former Notre Dame star even if he wasn’t his head coach but it’s yet another chance to sell Notre Dame as you can bet when you see him on TV tonight that Freeman will be sporting an “ND” pin.

Notre Dame will also likely see the likes of Kyren Williams, Kevin Austin, Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa, Jack Coan get selected in middle to later rounds while Isaiah Pryor, Drew White and Kurt Hinish could sneak into the final round.  Cain Madden and Jonathan Doerer will likely be signed as undrafted free agents.

Hamilton also coached Cincinnati cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner who is projected to possibly go in the top-five.

NFL draft: Kyle Hamilton goes second overall?

Who do you think ultimately drafts Kyle Hamilton?

The highest a safety has ever been taken in the NFL draft’s modern era was second overall as UCLA’s Eric Turner had that honor when the Cleveland Browns called his name in 1991.  Could Turner’s place in history be challenged by Notre Dame’s Kyle Hamilton this spring though?

According to a recent mock draft on CBS Sports done by Chris Trapasso he could.  Trapasso released his latest mock draft on Thursday morning and calls for Kyle Hamilton to be drafted by the Lions second overall.

“Hamilton has the size and tools to go this high, and the Lions need a true defensive playmaker” Trapasso says.

As was much of the conversation with Quenton Nelson ahead of the 2018 NFL draft, if you take a player at Hamilton’s position that high then because of positional value, he better turn out to be a Hall of Famer.  In Nelson’s case early returns are that he’s on that trajectory.

Hamilton is the best safety prospect in years.  As much as I don’t wish a career with the Detroit Lions on anyone (not that my hometown Chicago Bears are any better), my feelings wouldn’t be hurt if they chose him over Aidan Hutchinson of Michigan, even if I’m guessing we won’t hear Hamilton’s name called until at least the third pick to Houston.

Notre Dame football news: Kyle Hamilton out vs. Navy

It’ll be at least another week until we see Kyle Hamilton return to the field

Notre Dame will again be without their best defender on Saturday as safety Kyle Hamilton is officially out for the rivalry contest.  Hamilton injured his knee in Notre Dame’s win over USC on October 23.

Brian Kelly made that news official during his weekly Monday press conference.

“He’ll be getting his second treatment on his knee today (Monday),” Kelly said, “He’s made really good progress and will be evaluated next week to see if he can return for the Virginia game.”

D. J. Brown and Isaiah Pryor are both listed on Notre Dame’s depth chart at Hamilton free safety position this week.

Notre Dame to be without All-American vs. North Carolina

Do you think he plays again this year?

Notre Dame star safety Kyle Hamilton, who left last Saturday’s game against USC in the first half, will not play this weekend as the Irish host North Carolina.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly shared the news during his weekly Monday press conference.  Kelly added that he doesn’t feel Hamilton’s injury will be a long-term issue.  However, Kelly didn’t want to get into specifics with Hamilton’s injury.

“There is some confidence here that we’re going to have him back,” Kelly said, “We’ll make sure we give everybody a chance to weigh in on this matter.”

Obviously when you’re talking about a potential top-five or top-10 pick in the next NFL draft you’re looking at a lot more than a college junior simply playing to get his team into a better bowl game.

Kelly did point out that he has faith in Houston Griffith and D. J. Brown playing together while adding that Isaiah Pryor’s experience at safety could help Notre Dame in this situation.

Breaking: Kyle Hamilton leaves game for Notre Dame

Let’s hope this isn’t as serious as it appeared to be…

During USC’s second possession of Saturday night’s game at Notre Dame, star Fighting Irish safety Kyle Hamilton, a projected top five NFL draft pick next spring, left the game with what looked like a leg injury.

As of posting at 8:30 p.m. ET, Hamilton has remained on Notre Dame’s sideline but is yet to return to the game.  We will keep you posted on any developments to this potential huge story regarding the Notre Dame star as more becomes available.

Watch: High school team wins after trailing 24-7 with 1:05 to play

What’s the most insane comeback you’ve ever watched in any sport?

Notre Dame fans may be familiar with Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas as the traditional Nevada football powerhouse has produced former Irish players Ronnie Stanley, Alize Mack, and Nico Fertitta.

Bishop Gorman was featured on ESPN Friday night as they took on Hamilton of Arizona in a matchup between a pair of programs rated in the USA TODAY’s national high school top-25.  Bishop Gorman had things seemingly on cruise control as they led 24-7 with just 1:05 to play.

It took a late field goal, the fortune of recovering multiple onside kicks, and timely offense, but Hamilton pulled the miracle comeback as they came back to win in regulation, 25-24.  See the insane comeback below:

Clearly one of the craziest comebacks you’ll see in any sport, ever.
