Notre Dame survives Navy comeback bid: Instant takeaways

Summarize Notre Dame’s latest win in one sentence.

Notre Dame moved to 7-3 with a victory over Navy on Saturday.  That sentence alone feels good to write but the details of this one were a bit of a head-scratcher for the Irish.  Notre Dame came out hotter than a firecracker, scoring touchdowns on five of their six first-half possessions.  There were however another 30 minutes of football that clearly didn’t go Notre Dame’s way.

However, it was a win.

We’ll discuss both sides of that and have all of your postgame reactions to Notre Dame’s most recent victory here.  Here are your instant takeaways from Notre Dame’s 35-32 victory over Navy in Baltimore.

Notre Dame-Navy predictions: Will Irish sink Midshipmen?

Should Notre Dame be on upset alert after coming off such an emotional high from last week?

Notre Dame is back in the nation’s top 25. The Irish checked in 20th in the College Football Playoff rankings and 25th in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll following their beat down of Clemson.

Up next for Notre Dame is the Naval Academy, a team they’ve played every year since 1927 aside from the COVID-adjusted season of 2020.

The Irish have dominated the series and enter Saturday as a significant favorite. Will Notre Dame move to 7-3? And if so, will it be close?

Here is what our staff at Fighting Irish Wire sees happening Saturday.

Notre Dame-Navy: Staff Predictions

Do you think Notre Dame good this year?

Notre Dame sits at 7-1 on the year which would normally be good enough to have them in the College Football Playoff conversation entering November but due to a variety of things the Irish just to make a run at a berth currently seems unlikely, let alone them to actually get in.

The season continues with the second to last home game of the year Saturday as 2-6 Navy comes to town.  As bad as 2-6 is the Midshipmen are fresh off a win at Tulsa and did play unbeaten Cincinnati within a touchdown in their last two games.

Is this one a drubbing the records suggest it could be or does Navy make things interesting Saturday afternoon?

Here is what our experts at Fighting Irish Wire see happening as the Notre Dame-Navy rivalry is renewed Saturday:

Notre Dame-Navy: The world the last time the two didn’t meet (before 2020)

What was the world like last time Notre Dame and Navy didn’t play (previous to 2020, anyway)

Notre Dame and Navy have been playing football against each other for a very long time.  The two met every year from 1927-2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic wound up ultimately costing the two their annual meeting last fall.

Previous to 2020, the last year Notre Dame and Navy didn’t play football against each other was all the way back in 1926.  Here are a variety of things that were going on in the world in 1926:

Notre Dame football news: Kyle Hamilton out vs. Navy

It’ll be at least another week until we see Kyle Hamilton return to the field

Notre Dame will again be without their best defender on Saturday as safety Kyle Hamilton is officially out for the rivalry contest.  Hamilton injured his knee in Notre Dame’s win over USC on October 23.

Brian Kelly made that news official during his weekly Monday press conference.

“He’ll be getting his second treatment on his knee today (Monday),” Kelly said, “He’s made really good progress and will be evaluated next week to see if he can return for the Virginia game.”

D. J. Brown and Isaiah Pryor are both listed on Notre Dame’s depth chart at Hamilton free safety position this week.

Navy finds Notre Dame’s ’20 replacement, yet extends Notre Dame series

Notre Dame and Navy won’t be playing for the first time in almost a century. So who did the Midshipmen replace the Irish with this year?

For the first time since 1926, Notre Dame and Navy won’t be meeting up in football this fall.  I discussed this and how it will just be weird and I won’t like the game not taking place this year, even if it is about as non-traditional as a rivalry can be.

The Naval Academy was probably aware how difficult it would be to pull off the necessary changes in order to pull off the game after the ACC’s requirement of only one non-conference game that had to be played in the ACC team’s home state.  That eliminated Notre Dame from being able to travel to Annapolis for the first time in the history of the series and sadly meant there wouldn’t be a Notre Dame/Navy match-up in 2020.

Notre Dame instead plays Western Michigan as their only non-ACC game and it didn’t take long for Navy to find a replacement in independent BYU, who will now travel to Annapolis on September 7.

Navy also announced an extension to the Notre Dame series that will run through 2032.

Assuming 2020 is the only year that Notre Dame and Navy are unable to play, they will have played in 105 of 106 seasons after the contract runs out in 2032.

Notre Dame/Navy: Dublin Game Moved to Annapolis

Notre Dame and Navy will meet for the first time ever on Navy’s campus this Labor Day weekend.

As has been expected for quite some time, Notre Dame’s season opener against Navy has been moved and rescheduled.  No longer will the teams open up in Dublin, Ireland, instead they’ll play at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Labor Day weekend in a national broadcast on either ABC or ESPN.

The moving of the game is because of the worldwide Coronavirus that will keep attendance at college football games down significantly this fall.

The Navy release also adds that both programs will work with event organizers to plan a return trip to Ireland in the future and that information about ticket refunds will be forthcoming.

This will be the 94th consecutive meeting between Notre Dame and Navy, the longest-continuous-sectional-rivalry in college football.  Never in the 93 times previous has Notre Dame ever played at Navy’s home stadium in Annapolis.

Notre Dame leads the all-time series against Navy 79-13-1 and has won eight of the last nine contests against the Midshipmen after dropping three of four in the series from 2007 to 2010.

Notre Dame/Navy: Prediction Time Already?!?

Notre Dame and Navy’s game for the end of August is very much up in the air. But until it’s cancelled we can still get our predictions in!

In a perfect world we’ll have college football go off without a hitch and games will be played in front of full crowds starting at the end of August.  Now is that likely or realistic?  Not so much but until we’re told otherwise we’re still left with the task of predicting how this college football season will go.

We’ve already gone over ESPN’s Football Power Index and how they see Notre Dame not only losing three games but more specifically, having very little chance against three different opponents in 2020.

Our friend Pete Fiutak over at College Football News started putting together some of his “fearless predictions”, pre-season style anyway and today offered his thoughts on Notre Dame vs. Navy in Dublin.

Nothing like putting a prediction out there for a game that seems less likely to be taking place by the day.  I would argue against one point he brings up though and that’s Navy having an advantage with fewer practices.  Maybe it’s just from watching their pre-season struggles in the Showtime series they were featured in a few years back but that offense doesn’t appear to hit the ground running often.

Ultimately Fiutak picks Notre Dame 34-16 in his prediction, which would be a Notre Dame cover by BetMGM’s posted line where the Irish are a 16.5 point favorite.

Odds via BetMGMAccess USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated April 28, 2020 at 3:15 p.m. ET.

Notre Dame will have spots to fill with six players getting drafted and another six signing free agent deals with NFL teams over the weekend and as is always the case with the Navy game, the Irish will still have superior talent and much bigger lines on both sides of the ball.

I’m with Fiutak on Notre Dame winning this game fairly easily and think it taking place early in the season is a better thing for the Irish than the Midshipmen.  I’ll also go along with him four months before the game is set to be played and say that Notre Dame will cover.  For fun I’ll say 41-16.

Now let’s just hope this thing somehow is played as scheduled.
