Florida football insider talks Georgia vs Florida

Florida Gator insider Tyler Nettuno discusses the upcoming Georgia vs Florida 2020 college football game and how UGA can beat Bama.

The World’s Largest Cocktail Party goes down this Saturday as the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs (4-1, 4-1) take on the No. 8 Florida Gators (3-1, 3-1) in Jacksonville, Florida.

The Dawgs have dominated the series as of late, winning the past three matchups.  The overall series also belongs to Georgia with a record of 52-43-2.

Florida will be without key defensive linemen Zachary Carter and Antwuan Powell for the first half of the game due to suspensions from their actions in the Florida-Missouri brawl that took place last week.  Georgia will likely be without defensive back Richard LeCounte, who was injured in a motorbiking accident last Saturday night.  LeCounte is expected to make a full recovery soon as he suffered bruised ribs, a concussion and a minor shoulder injury.

Tyler Nettuno from Gators Wire gave us some scoop on how the game might play out and how the Dawgs could leave Jacksonville on top of the SEC East.

“If the Bulldogs pull off their fourth-straight win in the series on Saturday, it will be because they controlled the tempo of the game.” said Nettuno on how the Dawgs can win.  “Georgia’s focus on ball control has thrown the Gators for a loop in the last three games in this series. Especially when you look back at last year’s game, UGA completely neutralized quarterback Kyle Trask and the UF offense with consistent pressure and strong third-down defense. The Gators have a pretty special offense this year, and it’s hard to imagine Georgia could win a shootout against this team. But if UGA controls the pace of the game and forces Florida into a low-scoring game, it has a pretty good chance of pulling out the win.”

And Nettuno isn’t kidding about that special Gators offense.  In one game less than Georgia, Kyle Trask has thrown for 1,341 yards, 18 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions. This, in comparison to Stetson Bennett’s 1,089 yards, 7 touchdowns and 5 interceptions, definitely gives Florida the edge in the passing game.

“I think that heading into the season, most Gators fans felt like 2020 was the year for the team to potentially pull ahead of Georgia in the SEC pecking order.” Nettuno said.  “After the defensive struggles at the beginning of the season, that confidence was tempered quite a bit. But even without three starters in the secondary against Missouri, the defense held the Tigers to just 248 yards. Given that performance, plus UGA’s sloppy win over Kentucky on Saturday, I think Florida fans are definitely much more confident than they were a few weeks ago. But they felt the same way last year and got burned, so I think the fanbase is generally approaching this game with much more uncertainty than it has in the past.”

Richard LeCounte being out for Georgia could be a problem come Saturday.  Florida features one of the toughest matchups in all of college football with junior tight end Kyle Pitts.

Pitts stands at 6-foot-6, 250 pounds and leads all Florida receivers with 355 yards and 7 touchdowns.  No LeCounte means Kirby Smart and the Georgia defense are going to have to get creative with how to contain the red-hot Pitts.

“An already struggling defense being shorthanded is bad news for Florida, but the Bulldogs will also be without a number of key players on defense, including safety of Richard LeCounte.” said Nettuno when asked about the matchup issues Pitts presents. “These absences will make it even more difficult for Georgia to contain UF’s targets in the passing game, such as 6-foot-6 tight end Kyle Pitts, who presents a matchup problem for essentially every defense in the country, as is.”

Nettuno also touched on the fact that the Florida offense has had a pretty big void from players on the COVID-19 list.  Florida had to reschedule two games due to positive tests being discovered on the team.

“We know that starting defensive lineman Zach Carter will miss the first half of the game for his role in the halftime brawl against Missouri last week. Beyond that, it’s a bit murky. Florida has been pretty quiet about who has tested positive for COVID-19, but 15 players were inactive against the Tigers, including starting cornerback Marco Wilson, starting safeties Donovan Stiner and Shawn Davis, as well as starting kicker Evan McPherson. It’s unclear how far along those players were into their mandatory 14-day quarantines, so for now we don’t know whether they will be available against Georgia. But it’s very likely that some of those 15 players won’t be cleared by the game.”

This game really could go either way.  Florida most definitely has an edge on the offensive side of the ball, more so the passing game, while Georgia has the edge defensively.  Nettuno gave his outlook of how the game will finish and who he thinks will win.

“If you had asked me two weeks ago, I probably would have told you the Bulldogs would win a game that played out very similarly to how the last two contests have. But Florida’s defense really looked like it took a major step forward against an improving Missouri offense, and Georgia’s offense hasn’t looked particularly threatening to this point. The Bulldogs still have a talent advantage, especially in the trenches, and Florida’s offensive line (which has been just solid) will be tested more than it has been to this point. But I doubt Georgia can pull this one off if they allow a big day from the Gators’ offense. A slow, physical affair benefits the Bulldogs, but if Florida can score 30+ points, I don’t think quarterback Stetson Bennett and the UGA offense are capable of matching it. I told myself I wouldn’t make this same mistake this year, but I think Dan Mullen has finally gotten Florida to a spot where it’s talented enough to beat Georgia. Florida takes it 35-27.”

Saturday’s matchup is scheduled to kickoff in Jacksonville at 3:30 P.M. ET on CBS.

Why Georgia Will Win

The Florida defense rose up against Missouri last week, but the secondary has still been a bit questionable, giving up over 200 yards in all four games with just one interception.

Georgia might not be Alabama bombing away, but it’s possible for Stetson Bennett to have a decent enough game to go along with a strong performance from the SEC’s best defense.

Bennett was hardly perfect against Alabama and Kentucky, but he threw over 200 yards in each of the first four games with seven scores, and he’s got the weapons to push the ball deep on a group that allowed 7.7 yards per pass.

Bennett’s job is to keep the chains moving without making big mistakes. Georgia is fantastic at dominating the time of possession battle, and it has to keep Kyle Trask and that Gator offense off the field.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Florida Will Win

The offense has been tremendously consistent.

The running game has worked when needed, but it’s the passing game that’s been dominant. It’s not time to call Kyle Trask the next version of Joe Burrow, but …

Trask has thrown for over 400 fewer yards over Burrow’s 2019 four-game pace, but he has thrown for one more touchdown pass – 18 to 17 – and the same number of interceptions with three. He’s not quite bombing away deep like Burrow did over the first four games, but the 9.6 yards per pass are excellent.

The Georgia secondary is outstanding, but it’ll be without star Richard LeCounte – who’s recovering after a frightening traffic accident – and it had major problems with the Alabama passing game a few weeks ago.

Florida has the offense that can crank out yards and points in chunks. Georgia doesn’t.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Florida might be just rocky enough defensively to have issues with a Georgia offense that will keep up the pace, but Bennett hasn’t been strong enough over the last few weeks.

He’ll put up yards, but he’ll also throw two key picks. Trask and the Gator offense will be steady for a full four quarters.

Georgia-Florida week: Former UGA WR ejected for punching former Gator

Georgia-Florida week: Former Georgia football WR Javon Wims has been ejected from the Saints-Bears game after punching a former Florida DB.

I simply couldn’t picture a more fitting start to Georgia-Florida week than this.

A scrum broke out between former Georgia wide receiver Javon Wims and former Florida defensive back CJ Gardner-Johnson in the Saints vs Bears game on Sunday afternoon.

Gardner-Johnson was shown putting his finger inside the face mask of Chicago’s wide receiver Anthony Miller which then incited Wims to retaliate.

After the finger poke, Wims gave Gardner-Johnson a subtle tap from behind him and then rung his bell with two very powerful punches before being separated.

WATCH:

Wims was immediately ejected from the game and will likely be fined and possibly suspended.

It was an undisciplined move on Wims’ part but man nothing gets you going like a little Georgia-Florida brawl.  Saturday’s matchup between the No. 8 Gators and No. 5 Bulldogs should be one for the books.

Athlon Sports releases 2020 CFB rankings: Projects Florida ahead of Georgia

Athlon Sports released its 2020 college football top-25 and projected the Florida Gators to finish above the Georgia Bulldogs.

Athlon Sports recently released its list of the top-25 college football teams going into the 2020 football season, saying the list specifically represents where they think these teams will finish the season.

From Athlon:

This is not a preseason ranking of teams going into the season. Instead, this ranking takes into account where we project teams to finish after the national championship in January

The SEC is represented six times. Alabama is at No. 2 behind projected national champion Clemson. LSU is at No. 8, Texas A&M No. 11 and Auburn at No. 13.

Most notably, Georgia, the three-time SEC East defending champion, is ranked at No. 7, behind Florida at No. 6.

Athlon Sports stated its reason for putting the Gators ahead of the Bulldogs, even though Florida hasn’t won in Jacksonville in three years, is because of the SEC crossover games and staff continuity.

“Georgia has an edge in overall roster talent,” Athlon Sports wrote. “But the Gators have a small advantage in crossover play (at home versus LSU compared to at Alabama for the Bulldogs) and coach Dan Mullen’s team has more continuity in staff and scheme.”

I suppose Athlon Sports has a point, a Joe Burrow-less LSU at home won’t be as tough as Alabama in Tuscaloosa. However, the SEC East runs through Jacksonville and Georgia has held the keys for the last three years.

And as far as continuity goes, the Bulldogs came into the 2019 season with a new offensive coordinator and still took care of business in Jacksonville.

Georgia and Florida meet this year on Halloween from TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Florida.

Here is Athlon Sports’ projected top-10 teams in college football for 2020:

Athlon Sports’ 2020 Projected top-10

#1 Clemson

#2 Alabama

#3 Ohio State

#4 Oklahoma

#5 Penn State

#6 Florida

#7 Georgia

#8 LSU

#9 Notre Dame

#10 Oregon

FootballScoop predicts Georgia will be featured in two College GameDay matchups

Georgia football is projected to be featured in two College GameDay matchups this 2020 college football season.

I know, you’d rather be reading about which early-enrollees are turning heads at Georgia workouts. I’d rather be writing about that. Unfortunately, that’s not the world we are living in right now.

Instead, we are in a constant state of speculation, which can actually provide some entertaining stories like the one Zach Barnett of FootballScoop posted this week.

[lawrence-related id=22425]

He wrote a story predicting where ESPN’s College GameDay show will visit during each week of the 2020 college football season.

In his predictions, he had Georgia being involved in two College GameDay matchups.

The first one is a sure-thing…Georgia at Alabama on September 19 in Tuscaloosa.

From FootballScoop:

Speaking of sure things, Georgia at Alabama is perhaps the surest thing of the entire season. A rematch of the 2017 national championship and 2018 SEC title game, this game comes three days shy of the THIRTEEN YEAR anniversary of Georgia’s last trip to Tuscaloosa.

The other one is on Halloween, where Barnett predicts College GameDay will visit Jacksonville for the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. Not a bad prediction, as both teams will likely be in the top-ten playing for a spot in the SEC Championship Game.

Florida has finished second to Georgia in the SEC East in each of Dan Mullen’s first two seasons and, with a returning quarterback in Gainesville and a new offense coming in Athens, there’s a belief that the Gators can climb the hump this year. Florida vs. Georgia will be the ultimate trick or treat for Mullen.

Athens, Georgia was also mentioned as a possible destination on October 6. The Bulldogs will be hosting Auburn in The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, but there’s also plenty of other top-tier matchups taking place that weekend.

October 6 matchups include: Texas-Oklahoma, Clemson-Florida State, LSU-Florida, Auburn-Georgia, Minnesota-Wisconsin, Iowa-Ohio State, Rutgers-Purdue.

Oklahoma vs Texas gets GameDay that weekend in his predictions.

Ranking Georgia football’s rivalries

The University of Georgia Bulldogs have a lot rivals, here Han Vance looks at the biggest.

Georgia Bulldogs football has more than its fair share of rivals, with ancient series played against regional opposition, plus divisional and conference foes aplenty and regular meetings in the postseason. While there is some fluidity in the relevance of each rivalry’s significance based on how both programs are performing at the time, and the ebbs and flows of the meetings, some things never change.

  1. Florida: As long as the Gators and Bulldogs are the second and first place teams in the SEC East division, playing annually at an neutral site game near the states’ border, Florida and Georgia will be the hugest of rivals. Throw in the animus of Steve Spurrier after Vince Dooley’s dominance of Florida, as the plot thickened. Plenty of drama has unfolded over the years, from Larry Munson’s famous “Run Lindsay” call to Mark Richt’s whole team dancing on the field. Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow calling timeout and running up the score the next year, back to that “mean man” Steve Spurrier scoring “half a hundred” in Sanford Stadium while the old Gator Bowl was being transformed into an NFL stadium. Florida being by far the most populated state in the Southeast and the site of what was once called the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party gives the Gators an advantage; Georgia being the site where the SEC championship games are played and containing the South’s biggest market in Metro Atlanta is advantage UGA. Georgia has won three straight. Florida does have two straight Top 10 finishes.
  2. Tech: Although Georgia has had no lasting problems with their only in-state rival in the last two decades, the Yellow Jackets location in Atlanta ensures that the rivalry stays near the top. They call it “Clean, Old-fashioned Hate” but the bad blood mostly flows from North Avenue east, instead of the other direction, these days. Kirby Smart has won three straight over Tech since a late game collapse Between the Hedges his first year back at UGA.
  3. Auburn: Georgia has won 12-of-15 in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, first played in Piedmont Park of Atlanta. In the Kirby Smart era, UGA had underperformed on the road at the SEC West in three straight blowout losses, until the 2019 team changed that with a big win on the plains, behind the best defense in the whole country. Some project the teams to play twice in 2020.
  4. Alabama: Bama and Georgia were on the biggest collision course in the whole country a couple seasons ago, coming off an Alabama overtime win in Atlanta that nobody can forget. They met again for the SEC championship game in the same building that same calendar year, with a similar outcome. Alabama has won five straight over Georgia. Georgia has won on their last two trips to visit Alabama. Which trend continues on in 2020?
  5. Tennessee: Georgia and Tennessee have each won 13 SEC titles, tied for second in league history behind Alabama. The coaches at Tennessee having coached at Georgia only adds to the intrigue in a series UGA leads 24-23-2. The series has been moved back on the schedule, with Auburn being moved forward toward the middle, out of their traditional spot as UGA’s last SEC game.
  6. South Carolina: The Chickens brought some passion back to the rivalry by beating the Dawgs in Athens in 2019. South Carolina regards Georgia as their second biggest rival, after Clemson.
  7. Clemson: Clemson is the nearest geographic rival to UGA, a few miles closer than Georgia Tech is to UGA. At this point, it is a rivalry of jealousy, in that Clemson has done what Georgia wants to do. The athletic departments have ensured that the longtime rivals will meet again in the future, but it could be sooner if Georgia can get back to the CFP. Clemson is there annually.
  8. LSU: Georgia was blown out in Baton Rouge in 2018 and again in Atlanta in 2019, at the hands of the purple and gold. Georgia has faced LSU four times in-state for the SEC championship, winning just once. Another meeting may come. In September of 2013, USA TODAY called it “The no hate rivalry.” No love, though.
