Georgia basketball season ends with disappointing loss to LSU

The UGA basketball season is over following the Bulldogs’ 72-67 SEC tournament loss to the LSU Tigers

The Georgia Bulldogs basketball season is officially over following the Dawgs’ SEC tournament loss to the LSU Tigers. LSU (14-18) entered the contest with only two conference wins. Georgia (16-16) finishes the season with six SEC wins.

Georgia fell behind LSU, 42-30, in the first half. The Bulldogs attempted a comeback in the second half, but came up short in the 72-67 defeat.

LSU dominated Georgia on the offensive glass, where the Tigers outrebounded Georgia 18-8. Georgia forced just five LSU turnovers and allowed the Tigers to stay in a decent offensive rhythm.

Terry Roberts scored 12 points and hauled in six rebounds for Georgia. Braelen Bridges added 13 points and four rebounds. Justin Hill accumulated 13 points and three rebounds in the Bulldogs’ final game of the season.

LSU forward KJ Williams scored a game-high 18 points in the Tigers’ SEC tournament victory. Next, LSU will play Vanderbilt in the SEC tournament on March 9.

Overall, Georgia improved from last season, when the Bulldogs finished the year only 6-26 and won just a single SEC game. Head coach Mike White’s first season at the helm was an improvement, but Georgia needs to continue added pieces to the roster if it wants to make an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

The Bulldogs hoped to stick around the SEC tournament a few more nights.

Georgia basketball picks up another SEC win over LSU

The Georgia Bulldogs beat the LSU Tigers thanks to a clutch shot from guard Justin Hill. Georgia is now 13-2 at home.

The Georgia Bulldogs knocked off the LSU Tigers thanks to a clutch shot from guard Justin Hill. Georgia’s 65-63 win over LSU moves the Dawgs to 16-10. Georgia is 6-7 in conference play.

LSU drops to 12-14. The Tigers have only one SEC win this season.

First year head coach Mike White and Georgia have now won as many SEC games (six) as the total number of games Georgia won last season (six). The Bulldogs struggled a bit offensively against LSU.

However, Georgia held LSU to only 38.5% shooting. Georgia went just 15 of 26 from the free throw line and did not play its best game.

Center Braelen Bridges was Georgia’s leading scorer with 13 points. LSU’s KJ Williams paced the Tigers with 18 points.

Overall, Georgia is now 13-2 at home. However, the Bulldogs have to find a way to win on the road if they want to make some noise in the SEC. Georgia is 1-7 on the road.

Next, Georgia plays at No. 1 Alabama on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 6:00 p.m. ET.

We take a look back at Georgia’s top ten games of the decade. The Bulldogs football team played in some classic games in the 2010s

Picking the ten best Georgia games of the decade is no easy task. The Bulldogs had many triumphs and their fair share of heart-breakers this decade. Georgia fans know the ups and downs of college football perhaps better than any other fan base.

The Bulldogs went 99-36 over this decade. The decade is split between the Mark Richt and Kirby Smart era. Smart went 43-12, while Richt went 56-24. The 2010s started with UGA’s first losing season since 1996: the ugly 6-7 2010 season. It’s been much better since then. Now, the team enters every season with college football playoff expectations.

I will only say it once: these are the best Georgia games of the decade, NOT the best Georgia wins. Unfortunately, Georgia has been on the losing side of some of these incredible games. They’ve won some barn-burners as well. Here we go:

10. September 28th, 2013: Georgia 44, LSU 41

The ninth-ranked Bulldogs knocked off the sixth-ranked LSU Tigers in Athens. The shoot out featured: Todd Gurley, Keith Marshall, Aaron Murray, Chris Conley, Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, and Jeremy Hill.

Aaron Murray led Georgia on a clutch drive with the Dawgs trailing and completed a touchdown to Justin Scott-Wesley with under two-minutes to play. Georgia’s defense stepped up and shut down LSU on their final drive of the game, including a clutch Leonard Floyd sack.

9. September 10th, 2011: South Carolina 45, Georgia 42

Jadeveon Clowney and the 12th-ranked Gamecocks knocked off the unranked Bulldogs 45-42 in Athens. The game featured a back and forth final quarter, where the teams combined to score 39 total points. South Carolina got the last laugh when Clowney strip sacked Aaron Murray to score a late touchdown.

Was this the peak version of South Carolina? They were quite stacked back then, when they had Clowney, Melvin Ingram, Alshon Jeffery, and Marcus Lattimore. I’d say they were better without Stephen Garcia at the helm. Connor Shaw was much more consistent than Garcia and didn’t turn the football over as much.

Georgia Bulldog fans experienced yet another tough ending to the season. Most fans didn’t see LSU blowing out the Dawgs. In comparison, many Bulldog fans would’ve rather seen a heart-breaker. Georgia has a ways to go on the offensive side of the football.

Fortunately, for Georgia fans, the Bulldogs have a loaded class of 2020 coming in. Kirby Smart has stocked the team with incredible talent going forward. Georgia needs better off-season management heading into 2020.

A comedy of errors: Georgia football botched ample opportunities

Georgia’s inability to take advantage of the situations makes it clear that the Dawgs were never a true playoff contender.

The plays were there. The execution wasn’t.

Missing their two leading receivers, Georgia’s offense went deep several times on their opening drive.

Tyler Simmons, Demetris Robertson and Matt Landers failed to haul in well-thrown balls from Jake Fromm on the Bulldogs’ opening drive.

After being forced to punt, the Dawgs’ defense batted down a pass that Joe Burrow caught himself. LSU proceeded to march downfield and secure a lead it would never relinquish.

By the time George Pickens resumed play following his one half suspension, Jake Fromm had tweaked his ankle and the Silver Britches had lost third-leading receiver Dominick Blaylock. Later, linebacker Walter Grant left the game with a concussion following a targeting penalty that resulted in the ejection of Louisiana State defender Tory Carter.

Typically automatic senior placekicker Rodrigo Blankenship missed two of his three field goal attempts, but will enter his final bowl game wearing red and black maintaining the highest field goal percentage in Georgia history.

While we lament that the opportunities were there, Georgia’s inability to take advantage of the situations makes it clear that the Dawgs were never a true playoff contender.

Now, Georgia will await a bowl game selection tomorrow. Bulldog fans weren’t happy about the defeat. They reacted to the game via Twitter:

In the second quarter in today’s SEC Championship game, three-year starting quarterback Jake Fromm suffered an ankle injury following an awkward landing on a sack.

Backup quarterback Stetson Bennett has stepped in but Fromm’s injury appears to be minor and will not keep him out of the game.

Fromm since returned but looks rattled entering the second half.

Georgia football alumni are hyped up for SEC Championship

Former Georgia lettermen take to social media to hype up the SEC Championship game.

Some of our favorite Dawgs have experienced the joy of victory and the agony of defeat against LSU in the SEC Championship Game.

Georgia and Louisiana State have met three times in competing for the conference title. The Tigers have bested the Bulldogs 2-1 in such scenarios, claiming the conference championship in 2003 and 2011. Georgia won the 2005 matchup behind D.J. Shockley’s electrifying performance.

They seem confident that the Dawgs can even the series.

BIG 12 Championship Game: What it means for Georgia

What the Oklahoma vs Baylor BIG 12 Championship Game means to Georgia football ahead of its UGA vs LSU game.

Currently, Oklahoma and Baylor are in a fight for the BIG 12 championship.

The Sooners and Bears, No. 6 and No. 7, respectively, are both playing for a shot at making the College Football Playoff.

In order for either of them to get in, they’ll need Georgia to lose to LSU today.

But if Baylor wins, the Bears may need more than just a Georgia loss. They may need Georgia to lose by at least one touchdown.

If Georgia loses to LSU today by, let’s say three points, then the Dawgs could have a very real argument for remaining at the No. 4 spot in the College Football Playoff rankings and sneaking in.

Now if Oklahoma wins today, Georgia needs to flat-out win. A close loss would not cut it.

However, it’s a different story when it comes to Baylor.

It’s unlikely, but does the committee want Baylor in? I personally don’t think they do.

Georgia has three top-15 wins to date, and if Baylor wins today it’ll have one top-25 win.

I don’t think anybody truly believe Baylor could hang with LSU, Clemson or Ohio State. And if Georgia manages to lose to LSU in a fight to the finish, there would be no doubt that Georgia would be the better option for the playoff.

But maybe I’m a little biased.
