Multiple Sooners targets figure into 247Sports’ latest five-star update

Several Oklahoma Sooners targets saw some movement or earned their fifth star as 247Sports integrated On3’s recruiting rankings.

With the bulk of summer still ahead of us, tomorrow’s stars have plenty of time and leeway to improve and move up in the recruiting world’s rankings. In the case of the Oklahoma Sooners, multiple targets they have honed in on for their 2023 class saw some reshuffling as they became five stars for the first time or moved up and down amongst the other five stars around them.

247Sports took the opportunity to update their five stars in the new-and-improved 247Sports Composite rankings that now include rankings from On3 recruiting in addition to those from 247Sports, Rivals and ESPN.

David Hicks is the first notable Sooner target to pop up and he comes in at number five. The massive and insanely talented defensive lineman is a certified five-star across every major service and he is a high priority for Todd Bates and the Oklahoma staff. A&M looks like an early leader but Oklahoma is right on their heels and this fall’s results could very well be the leader.

Another Texas high school star, Anthony Hill also is a 247 Sports composite five-star in the latest update as well. The No. 16 ranked Hill just finished a weekend in Norman for his official visit. The Sooners are once again fighting the Aggies for another defender but are very much still in the race at this present time.

Behind Hill at No. 21 sits another highly-rated defender in Peter Woods out of Alabama. Todd Bates has been at the forefront of this recruitment since taking over at Oklahoma and is building on his relationship with Woods that he started while still working for the Clemson Tigers. Woods is already planning officials to Clemson and the Sooners would be wise to see if they can land one as well. Woods’ calling card is his versatility as he can play inside and out.

No.22 goes to running back Richard Young who the Sooners also hosted for an official visit this weekend. Young is the first Sooners offensive target to make this list and while his recruitment favors UGA and Alabama, an official visit plus his relationship with running backs coach DeMarco Murray still gives the Sooners a puncher’s chance.

The last major Sooners target of note is the last five-star in the new rankings. Samson Okunlola, a tackle out of Massachusetts comes in at No. 33. The massive six-foot-five, 305-pounder, with a seven-foot wingspan has the Sooners in his top 9. Bill Bedenbaugh’s reputation precedes him and while the Sooners offered a little late they have a shot to make up some ground and possibly sneak into the top five.

While it’s entirely possible the Sooners don’t end up with all of these prospects, there’s a real chance that at least one or two are very serious possibilities for Oklahoma. There’s a long time between now and signing day but it’s encouraging to see the Sooners still in the mix for quite a few five-star prospects considering the turnover that unfolded last winter. Oklahoma still being in the mix is a testament to the new coaching staff and their recruiting prowess.

Watch: Georgia coach Kirby Smart describes what makes Dan Lanning a great coach

After spending time with him in Georgia, Kirby Smart obviously has a lot of respect for Oregon coach Dan Lanning.

Oregon Duck fans are familiar with the story of how new head coach Dan Lanning started in the business. After driving thousands of miles for an opportunity as a graduate assistant, Lanning worked his way into the coaching industry and climbed the ladder through hard work and determination.

Lanning is as high on that ladder as he has been, being named the head coach of the Ducks in December 2021. However, in January, he reached a height many coaches will never see: winning a national championship.

As the defensive coordinator of the Georgia Bulldogs, Lanning coached arguably one of the best defenses in college football history, proving his worth as a leader of men. This past week, at the SEC spring meetings, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart was asked about Lanning, and what has made him such a young success story. Here is what he had to say:

“I like to think in our profession that if you work really hard, you’re smart, you catch on with the right people, that you can be successful,” Smart said. “Dan has paved his own way. He’s done more for the people he worked for than the people who worked for him. He’s really an incredible worker, enthusiastic, and buys in. He’s got a great family story.”

That’s high praise coming from the coach of the national champions, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise for any Oregon fan who has watched Lanning work the past several months.

While it is still incredibly early in his tenure, and he has not yet coached a college game as a head coach, there is a hope Lanning will have Oregon take that next step to become a title contender. If so, his legacy in Eugene will live on forever.

Looking at Georgia baseball’s NCAA Tournament path

The Georgia Bulldogs baseball team put together a solid 35-21 season and are the No. 2 seed of the Chapel Hill Regional.

The Georgia Bulldogs baseball team put together a solid 35-21 season and are the No. 2 seed of the Chapel Hill Regional. UNC, the No. 10 national seed, hosts the regional.

Georgia baseball coach Scott Stricklin helped the Bulldogs go 15-15 in SEC play. The SEC is one of the toughest conferences in baseball. Georgia enters the NCAA Tournament on a bit of a cold streak. The Diamond Dawgs lost six of 10 games to end the season.

What information do Georgia baseball fans need to know about the regional?

In the new-look SEC how could the conference align its ‘permanent rivals?’

With discussions of a 3-6 model for the SEC, what could the permanent rivals look like for the future of the conference?

With the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns set to make the move for the SEC potentially as early as the 2023 season, SEC leadership has been in discussions about how to put together the conference schedule.

With 16 teams, there have been considerations of going to divisions or pods, but it seems the system that’s gotten the most traction is one where the teams in the conference play three or four permanent rivals and then five or six games against the remainder of the SEC on a rotating basis.

Another part of the discussion is how many conference games to play. If the SEC plays nine conference games, that potentially eliminates a nonconference game. Last season, each member of the SEC played four nonconference games. They played seven SEC games to give them 11 total regular season games in 2021.

To stay at 11 games and play nine SEC games, the conference would have to cut two of their nonconference games. Not much of an issue for the top of the conference who are going to make bowl games, but the middle of the conference might want that extra non-conference

Nick Saban recently spoke on the idea of scheduling and he favors dropping a non-conference game.

He brings up a valid question. Will other conferences play more games inside the conference as the SEC will? At the same time, the SEC’s been notorious for scheduling FCS schools as part of their nonconference schedule.

If the SEC ends up settling on three permanent opponents and nine total games in the conference, there are a lot of interesting possibilities that could come together as the permanent opponents for each of the 16 members of the new-look SEC.

There isn’t a perfect model and it’ll be a struggle to keep every annual matchup together but after several attempts and discussions with analysts who cover teams in the SEC, this could be how the future of the SEC looks in regards to permanent opponents.

I’m sure there are fans out there that won’t love the permanent opponents that were listed for their team, but this is the undertaking that Greg Sankey and the SEC are working through. After countless hours of discussion and brainstorming, this is a pretty good look at what the permanent opponents in the SEC could look like.

I fully anticipate being roasted a bit for this, but it was fun working through the process.
