Georgia DL Jalen Carter draws Quinnen Williams comparison

See why Georgia defensive lineman Jalen Carter is drawing comparisons to a recent top-three draft pick

Last year’s dominant Georgia defense sent five players into the first round of the 2022 NFL draft after winning the national title, but the best of that unit might not have been eligible.

Jalen Carter, the consensus top defensive line prospect in the 2023 NFL draft class, was a disruptive force for the Bulldogs throughout last season, and has the potential to be a top-three pick next April.

NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah recently broke down Carter’s game, and found plenty of similarities between him and another recent top-three pick, New York Jets star Quinnen Williams:

These two have a similar frame/build and they both possess an explosive first step. I would give Williams a slight edge in the power department, but I believe Carter is more nimble and a smoother athlete. Like Williams during his time at Alabama, Carter finds a way to stand out on a college defense overflowing with NFL talent. Williams, who was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2019 draft, is an ascending force for the New York Jets, with 13 sacks and 73 pressures (by Pro Football Focus’ count) over the past two seasons. I believe Carter has the same upside.

After losing other big names on the unit like Travon Walker, Jordan Davis and Nakobe Dean, the spotlight should be trained on Carter this season in what should be his final campaign at the college level.

If he lives up to the hype, he should be one of the first non-quarterbacks off the board in next year’s draft.

Georgia, HC Kirby Smart agree to massive 10-year contract extension

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has a new contract extension that will keep him in Athens for another decade

Being an SEC head football coach is good work, if you can get it.

Especially if you’re Kirby Smart, who just led the Georgia Bulldogs to their first national title in 40 years.

Smart has agreed to a new 10-year contract extension to remain in Athens, one that will pay him north of $112 million, according to ESPN’s Chris Low.

In six seasons leading the Bulldogs, Smart has a record of 66-15. In addition to last year’s national title, Smart has one SEC title under his belt, as well as four SEC East crowns. He’s been named SEC Coach of the Year twice, after winning four national titles as Nick Saban’s defensive coordinator at Alabama.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart comments on chance to face ‘longtime friend’ Dan Lanning

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart had some complimentary words for his friend and Oregon coach Dan Lanning during SEC Media Days.

As the Georgia Bulldogs defense was absolutely dominating every team it faced in 2021, it was a foregone conclusion their defensive coordinator Dan Lanning was going to have many options in the offseason as to which head coaching job he wanted.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart knew his DC and buddy was out the door, but he probably didn’t figure on having to face Lanning so soon.

Lanning accepted the head coaching job at Oregon and almost immediately, everyone looked at the 2022 schedule and saw the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game get a lot more significant.

It’s one of the biggest Week 1 games in the sport, but according to Smart, he’s appreciative of Lanning’s role with the 2021 national champions, but come Sept. 3, it’s all business. He discussed this during SEC Media Days.

I get to go against a longtime friend and a guy that meant so much to our prgram in Dan Lanning, but we open against Oregon right here in Atlanta. We’re excited for that opportunity; we get to chance to represent the SEC right off the jump.

No doubt that same excitement is being felt across the country in Oregon. Lanning will get to prove to everyone “right off the jump” that the Ducks made the right decision in hiring a guy who led the best defense in all of college football.

Even if Georgia gets the better of Oregon in Atlanta, Lanning’s Ducks will make it a difficult 60 minutes for the Bulldogs and make them like they just through a very tough SEC game.

And who knows? Maybe Oregon will go down to the state capital of Georgia and shock the South with a victory.

Watch: Jordan Davis’ emotional return to his high school

Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jordan Davis made an emotional return to Mallard Creek High School

Three-star Mallard Creek High School defensive tackle recruit Jordan Davis committed to the Georgia Bulldogs on Nov. 16, 2017. Davis’ commitment did not have much fanfare.

Fast forward to 2022. Jordan Davis just helped the Georgia Bulldogs win a national championship. Davis played an instrumental part in Georgia’s elite defense last season.

The story doesn’t end there. Davis broke the internet at the NFL combine with his 40-yard dash time. 6-foot-6, 340-pound men should simply not be able to move that fast. Davis’ combine performance helped him solidify his spot as a first round pick.

In the 2022 NFL draft, the Philadelphia Eagles selected Davis with the No. 13 pick. The Eagles picked two Georgia Bulldogs in Jordan Davis and linebacker Nakobe Dean.

Recently, Jordan Davis came back to Mallard Creek. Davis is legend there thanks to his success and incredible personality. Gabe McDonald documented Davis’ return to Mallard Creek:

It is awesome to see the smiles on everyone’s faces at Mallard Creek. Jordan Davis came from a pretty humble place and is giving back to the kids at Mallard Creek. Davis provided some advice and wise words to students at his alma mater.

Jordan Davis has had a special year. It began with Georgia defeating Clemson in Charlotte. Davis even helped Georgia recruit another defensive tackle from North Carolina before his rookie season with the Eagles.

Oklahoma continues deep dive into the state of Alabama with offer to 2024 4-star EDGE Sterling Dixon

Oklahoma’s efforts to recruit SEC territory continue as the Sooners offered four-star EDGE, Sterling Dixon, out of Mobile, Alabama.

Oklahoma’s foray into the state of Alabama to find talented football players has been one of the more notable changes in the recruiting philosophy with this new coaching staff under [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag]. Oklahoma was never this active or prevalent in the state of Alabama under [autotag]Lincoln Riley[/autotag], but the Sooners are clearly prioritizing the state.

The latest native of Alabama to receive an offer to play at Oklahoma is 2024 EDGE prospect, Sterling Dixon. Dixon, a four-star prospect out of Mobile Christian School, stands 6-foot-3 and has received quite a bit of attention from SEC schools like Auburn and Arkansas. Auburn already has a crystal ball prediction in favor of landing Dixon, however, it’s early in the 2024 cycle, and things could still change.

Dixon’s calling card is his first step quickness and his lateral agility, which allows him to get on top of offensive linemen while they are still off balance. This allows him to beat them to the edge or push outside then cross their face inside with speed to get into the backfield. It’s clear he needs more weight on him to play in college, but Dixon looks like a nice upside player with more refinement to his technique.

Oregon Ducks season opener against Georgia is sold out

The highly anticipated matchup between the Oregon Ducks and Georgia Bulldogs in Atlanta is already sold out according to game officials.

No surprise here, but the highly anticipated matchup between the Oregon Ducks and the reigning national champion Georgia Bulldogs is officially sold out, according to game officials on Wednesday.

The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game has always been a tough ticket, but the matchup between two powerhouse programs – and of course the side plot of Dan Lanning taking over as Oregon’s head coach after serving as Georgia’s defensive coordinator last year – has made this game one of the must-see contests of the college football season.

“This has already proven to be one of the toughest tickets we’ve ever seen for the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game,” Peach Bowl CEO and president Gary Stokan said in a statement. “You have the defending National Champions squaring off with arguably the most successful Pac-12 team in the CFP era. With two passionate fan bases and the best neutral-site matchup on opening weekend, it’s no surprise we’ve seen such a strong demand for tickets.”

While neutral site is a bit of a misnomer in this situation – since the game is being played in Atlanta – it is still a great opportunity for the Ducks to show off their new look on a national stage, while they attempt to take down college football’s best team from last season.

The game is kicking off at 12:30 PM PT on Saturday, September 3.

Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns 2023 recruiting classes compared to future SEC opponents

With the move to the SEC right around the corner, the Sooners’ 2023 recruiting class could be pivotal for their first few years in their new conference.

Sitting atop the Big 12 conference team recruiting rankings midway through July, the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners aren’t simply recruiting for the Big 12. With the impending move to the SEC a year or two away, the Sooners and Longhorns are preparing for their foray into the toughest conference in the country.

Oklahoma and Texas are contractually bound to the Big 12 through the 2024 season because of their current media rights agreement. However, there’s the possibility that the two departing schools and the Big 12 could come to an agreement on a buy-out that’s mutually beneficial.

So if the first year in the SEC becomes 2023 or 2024, the 2022 and 2023 recruiting classes will be pivotal to the Oklahoma Sooners’ move to their new conference.

In 2022, the Sooners finished No. 8 in the country in team recruiting rankings and the Texas Longhorns were No. 5. Including OU and Texas with SEC teams, the Sooners were No. 5 and the Longhorns No. 4. The two Big 12 schools have been great recruiters for some time, but the move to the SEC will help solidify their place on the national recruiting scene and more than likely give it a bump as kids look to play against the best competition in the country.

Playing in the SEC is significant on the recruiting trail. In the 2022 cycle, all 14 teams in the conference finished inside the top 32. Even the lowly Vanderbilt Commodores had a top 32 recruiting class, which would have finished fourth in Big 12 recruiting for 2022.

For 2023, the Sooners have made significant progress in the last few weeks to strengthen their recruiting class. They’re the No. 10 team in the country after a July that’s earned them seven commitments. Given that the move to the SEC is right around the corner let’s take a look at how Oklahoma and Texas stack up against their future SEC foes using 247Sports composite team recruiting rankings.

Nation’s No. 2 linebacker, Troy Bowles, picks Georgia over Ohio State and Oklahoma

As expected, Ohio State missed out on one of the country’s top linebackers for the 2023 class on Saturday. #GoBucks

This didn’t come as much of a surprise, but many were still holding out hope that Ohio State could swoop in at the last minute and get a somewhat unexpected 2023 prospect.

The nation’s No. 2 rated linebacker, Troy Bowles, out of Tampa, Florida, had Ohio State in his final three but looked like a heavy Georgia lean for quite a while. In the end, there wasn’t a shocker, with the son of Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles picking Georgia on Saturday.

According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Bowles was ranked as the No. 44 prospect in the recruiting cycle. He plays his high school ball for Jesuit High School.

While it would have been nice to land one of the country’s best linebacking prospects, Ohio State has a young and deep crop of linebackers already on the roster, so the loss wasn’t too great.

Onward and upward, as they say, and on to tracking other top recruits to finish off the 2023 class.
